[lingucomponent-issues] [Issue 76093] hyph_en_GB and hyph_en_US contain the same files

The observation that these two are the same is correct. It is quite possible,
and perhaps even likely, that we may want them to diverge in the future and I
can see pros and cons to using the same file for en_US and en_GB (and en_ZA,
en_AU etc.) - on the one hand having a common file conserves a small amount of
space, but it does lead to loss of generality.

The only reason they are still the same is that we have not yet focussed our
attention on the hyphenation dictionary, however given how extensively we've
updated the en_GB dictionary since 2002 it looks as though this task is long
overdue. I'd like to look at the problem in a little more detail and report
back.

We have updated the en_GB dictionary correcting a number of errors in the
currently shipping version. These include the removal of a number of non-words
that were still present in it, correction of a few misspellings and addition of
a number of new words.

Updates to both the .dic and .aff files have been done. The updated files will
be attached to this issue.

Please can the new dictionary be made available for download as soon as possible
and incorporated into the code line for inclusion with the next release.

Thanks
David Bartlett
(en_GB dictionary maintainer)

Alex,

With a bit of luck en-GB builds should now be available on the mirrors (for
2.0.2). Could you please update the download page appropriately?

Thanks

We have now completed the QA tests for the Linux version and all tests passed
with the exception of saving files in the SW 3.0, SW 4.0 and SW 5.0 formats. For
these tests OOo crashed. This problem has been present in all Linux versions
that we've tested (including en-US) to date so I don't know whether it is a
known bug.

The version tested was 2.0.2 m5 (RC4 I believe) using the en-US build and the
en-GB language pack since a binary build for en-GB does not exist at this stage.
It was tested on both Fedora Core 1 and Gentoo systems. Testing of the Windows
version under Windows 2000 is under way at present and should be complete today.

Can we now have a binary build for en-GB please? How is distribution to the
mirrors arranged? It would be really good to have this done at the same time as
2.0.2 is released since we have completed the translation work and been through
the full suite of QA tests?

Thanks
David.

Page looks fine apart from the title.

2.0 rc1 was put through the QA process and we advised the releases and l10n

work is under way at the moment, the only trouble is we don't actually know
which particular build we should be QA'ing - could someone please advise?

Thanks

Sorry for the last entry - hit go too soon.

The language packs for en_GB are available from:

So far I think only Pavel has built full installation sets for en_GB, though I
may be wrong.

Stefan,

Thank you for you positive and constructive response - it is greatly
appreciated. I am happy to go with what you suggest and am willing to help out
where possible.

If you prefer to handle en-GB like the other languages: German, Dutch etc., that
will be fine.

I'd really appreciate it if skoorb is prepared to help maintain the web page for
en-GB so that my focus is not drawn away from the localisation task too much.

Release 2.0.2 will be fully QA'd. We are familiar with the process having run
through the it for the milestone build at the 2.0beta stage.

Please just instruct me what I need to do next; If we could have it up and live
by the time 2.0.2 hits the servers we'll be happy.
Thanks a lot
David.

Sorry, what is an NLC?

Actually British English is neither orphaned nor unmaintained. In fact it is
actively being maintained and we have current milestone builds available and
up-to-date with all GUI, help, extras and other bits translated.

I personally put the 2.0 beta en-GB build through the QA process and we can
repeat that for any subsequent releases.

Some time ago I took a poll of the contributors and reviewers to see whether we
wanted a separate set of national language web pages - the answer was It's not
necessary given that the main web site is in English.

So, what is the problem? Are you telling me that we *have* to register a
national language project before you will consider it? If so fine we'll do it,
but we felt it unecessary for the reasons above.

So given that en-GB *is* fully up-to-date and actively maintained what's the
problem?

David.

Wow there hold on!

Are you saying that you folk are not prepared to add en-GB to the list of
languanges for downloading?

Steady on, we have a localisation team that has gone to the trouble of
localising the product and you are not willing to provide a download link?

How do other languages get added to the download page?

If all you need is someone to maintain a page of HTML I'm sure we could find
someone within the localisation team - but remember we are a localisation team
not a web maintenance team.

Please don't close this as WONTFIX

If I go to www.openoffice.org there is nice big green button download
OpenOffice.org. If I click this button I am taken to a generic download page on
which I can select which language and OS I want to download. Selecting a
language (or English and platform) takes me to a second generic download page.
This second page is identical for all languages I tried. At the bottom of this
page is a button that says download.

If I click this button and I've selected English the download starts
immediately. If I have selected a different language then I am taken to the
localisation page.

Surely the correct thing is that if I've selected en-GB or en-US (or other
flavours of English in the future) when I click download, the relevant version
should immediately start downloading exactly as for en-US. I see no need for
another page in between! I see no need to treat en-US and en-GB any differently.

Surely this is not a problem?

Obviously the en-GB version needs to be on the mirrors. We have advised the
releases team of its availability (months ago). I'm only involved in
localisation so I don't understand the details of how releases move through the
system into distribution. All I know is that we announced its availability along
with OOo 2.0 beta and it is still not yet available through the web site.

As skoorb mentioned en-GB is chosen by people out of preference. This is
particularly important as OOo moves into trials in UK schools, and it is also
important to some international organisations trialling alternatives to MSOffice
(they use British English as standard).

The British English version of OOo 2.0 is not listed on the web site for
download. When I go to the download page I am offered numerous different
languages, but not en-GB. Please add it to the list of localised versions for
download.

The en-GB version can be obtained from here:
http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/2.0.0rc2/
or here:
ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/

The en-GB build has been through a full qa process (not every milestone but the
2.0.2 cadidate will be put through again).

Please add the en-GB language to the web site. It was one of the first available
and yet it is still not accessible through the web site. The availability was
announced to l10n and releases mail lists in time for relevant release
milestones.

Thanks

Any idea when this will be implemented? - it is a long time since the issue was
raised and the dictionary version listed on the web site is still hopelessly out
of date.

With OOo beta 2 being more widely used I'm receiving an increasing number of
queries about the dictionary, most of which are solved by this update.

A new dictionary conforming to the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) style guide
has been created. This style is in use particularly by organisations such as:
 International Red Cross
 - http://www.ifrc.org/publicat/commsguide/html/Extras/Style%20appendix.pdf
 International Telecommunication Union
 - http://www.itu.int/sg-conf/general/styleguide.doc
 World Trade Organization
 - http://members.wto.org/txt/english/bible.htm

A language tag exists for the style:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/lang-tags/en-GB-oed

It is based on British English but using internationally preferred spellings
where alternatives exist.

A dictionary package en_GB-oed.zip comprising:
en_GB-oed.dic
en_GB-oed.aff
README_en_GB-oed.txt
is being submitted for inclusion as an optional English dictionary for OOo.

Thanks
David
en_GB dictionary maintainer.

[l10n-issues] [Issue 49543] Extras for en-GB localised version of OOo 2.0

Interesting question. The source I currently have checked out of CVS seems to
have both accor_en-US.dat and accor_en-GB.dat in the en-US directory of
autotext. I have no idea why this is. The en-GB version in the en-US folder is
*not correct* and I don't know why it is there.

I would assume that the en-GB file could be removed from the en-US language
directory and the en-US file could be removed from the en-GB language directory?
Or is there another reason for having both?

David.

Pavel, Ivo,

OK, there seem to be a few things going on here, let me try and separate them so
that I know how to deal with them.

Firstly, please accept my apologies if the format in which I submitted these
updates does not work for you. In the absence of any guidance it seemed the
sensible thing to me. After all when I build a new version I just merge the tree
I generated into the new sources I've pulled from CVS and then build it. :-)
It's worked for me. But the important thing is I need to submit these updates in
the right format for you to work with, so let me unpick the questions.

It seems that the main thing is that you do not want the whole bundle of en_GB
updates (outside of the GUI and help) submitted as a single issue. No problem I
can split the updates into different sections and file these as different
issues. This is just a simple admin/logistics task.

Regarding real extras:
- I'll remove wizard/memo (obviously hangover from past), at least it's not
something missing. ;-)
- I'll prune wizard/web out from my directory structure, there is nothing in it
anyway.
- starmath includes 01 in the name, but I thought we'd completely done away with
country dialling codes? If so and it is in the en-GB folder why does this
matter? Should I rename it starmath44.sms? Pending any further guidance this
is what I'll do.
- naming palettes. I had never realised I should rename the palettes files,
sorry. I saw no reason to use different names (from a user point of view) and
would have thought that being in a separate en_GB directory did the trick. My
build was not broken by this. I'm happy to rename them if that is what is
needed.

I think these are all the questions raised. They are completely trivial to deal
with and can be fixed in minutes, it'll be done today.

David.

Pavel,

Modification to the real extras as per earlier note done. The new file is
available for download from the same location. It contains ONLY the en-GB files
and changes within extras - I'll file the changes to default images,
accelerators etc separately.

Changes as follows:

1. Removed wizard/web

2. Removed wiards/memo

3. Renamed starmath01.sms as starmath44.sms

4. Renamed palettes files as follows:
   arrowhd.soe arrowhead.soe
   classic.sog standard.sog
   hatching.soh hatch.soe
   modern.sog contemporary.sog
   palette.soc colours.soc
   styles.sod drawstyles.sod

I hope this is what you intended. Please contact me if not.
David.

Ivo, Pavel,

These are updates to the accelerators for the en-GB version of OOo2. As per the
discussion thread in issue 49543 these changes have been split out from it and
filed separately here. I'll attach the updates since they are small files.

Thanks
David.

Pavel,

Some are the same as the en-US ones and some are different. As a philosophy we
tried to keep the accelerators the same as for en-US except where a change to
accommodate different terminology or keyboard layout (the GB keyboard is
different from US one) is required. Consequently only some en-GB accelerator
files differ, and even these differ only a little.

This leads us to the dilemma: Do we create a complete set even though some are
different? Do we leave out the ones that are the same? Can we omit individual
files, or only complete en-GB directories?

It seems to me that the correct solution is to create a complete package of
en-GB ones even though some are the same as en-US. Sure it increases the size of
the source by a few kilobytes, but that is hardly significant. Importantly it
avoids the dubious situation of falling back to an en-US version sometimes and
sometimes not. This can leave us exposed to changes in the build process etc. So
that is what we did - created a complete en-GB set.

It seemed to me to be the correct solution. shrug
David.

Richard, I agree with what you did with dictionary.lst, thanks.

The word count was generated by the munch tool, and it is correct. I wonder if
dnaber was viewing it with an editor that was using a character set other than
ISO 8859-1? The file is written in ISO-8859-1 and viewing it in a editor using
US ASCII gives the wrong count.

David.

A complete package of all the extras for en-GB localisation is now available
from here:

with SRC680_m104.

The file helpimg.ilst has had the following lines added to it:

We have updated the en_GB dictionary correcting a number of errors in the
currently shipping version. These include the removal of a number of non-words
and Americamisms that were still present in it, correction of a few misspellings
and addition of a number of significant words that were previously omitted.

Updates to both the .dic and .aff files have been done. The updated package can
be retrieved here:
http://en-gb.pyxidium.co.uk:32080/OOo/resources/en_GB.zip

The dictionary is suitable for use with both OOo 1.1.x and 2.0 although the
dictionary.lst file included uses the 2.0 style thesaurus definition for en_US.

Please could the new dictionary be incorporated into new releases of the 2.0beta
timeline asap.

Thanks

Ivo,

A complete translation of the UI strings for en-GB is available. The GSI for the
latest milestone (m93 as of writing) can be obtained here:
http://en-gb.pyxidium.co.uk:32080/OOo/resources/GSI_en-GB.sdf.gz

It has been verified and checked in a test builds under windows and linux, and
also contains all the help content string translations too.

The GSI will be kept up-to-date as new milestones become available.

We look forward to en-GB being released at the earliest possible opportunity.

Thanks
David.

The choice of dictionary is bound to a particular language and country code. For
example en and GB. One can define multiple dictionaries for en and GB
but they are all checked for spelling and it is not possible to select which one
should be used. It would be extremely useful to do so.

For example, in the UK there are two distinctly different house styles: one
based on the OED house style and the other based on colloquial English usage.
Sometimes one needs to use one and sometimes the other. We have created two
different en-GB dictionaries conforming to the two house styles, but there is no
way to select which one should be used without manually editing the
dictionary.lst file and restarting OOo.

It is understood that the same issue arises with other languages too, such as
German.

This is a request to decouple the choice of dictionary to use from the choice of
language and country: e.g. en and GB, thereby allowing multiple dictionaries
for one language/country, and to provide the user with the capability to select
which dictionary should be used without having to restart OOo. Thus if one
selected en and GB, one would have a further choice whether to use the
English (UK) or English (OED) dictionary. (Assuming both are installed.)

An alternative solution would be to define additional language variants, such
as, for English, the language English (OED) and allocate it a different
designator such as en and OED (rather than using en and GB). en-OED
would be non-country-specific flavour of English. Whilst less ideal than the
request above this solution may fit better with the current architecture of the
application.

en-GB build of 680_m85 completed successfully. It will now be rolled forward
into the upcoming 2.0 release. OOo 1.1.x will not support en-GB. Any bug reports
for en-GB should be filed against the beta test versions of 2.0, the first of
which should be available shortly.

Hello Jerome,

Thanks for your offer to help with en-GB localisation (Britsh English), any
additional help will always be most welcome.

Firstly a quick progress update for you. The OOo 1.1.x series will never be
localised for en-GB. This is due to some fundamental problems with the way the
language was implemented in it and used for development but not release
purposes. However, en-GB is firmly on the release timeline for OOo 2.0, and an
en-GB version will be released as one of the first supported languages. :-)

So far we have completed translation of all the GUI strings and the help for OOo
2.0 milestone m73. The next step is to migrate these forward to the latest
milestone and do a test/evaluation/QA build for testing. I'm hopeful this will
be done by the end of this week, although there is a minor build issue that
needs to be resolved.

Any help with the testing/QA and feedback on the test build will be greatly
appreciated.

David.
