@oooforum

Are you using a third-party build? This has definitely not been fixed in the
Oracle build, version 3.3 still has the same unusable icons as 3.2.1.

Here is how to provide - constructive - feedback to the project:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/ODF_icons_i-team;

HOW do you provide feedback via that page? I have read the whole page, and there
is no feedback form anywhere on it!

And just FYI (and subject to change), here are the latest design suggestions:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/ODF_Icon_Redesign;

Neither of the two suggestions there do anything to address the lack of colour
coding, they are not colour coded either!

Obviuously I can see that the developers have failed to fix this issue, the fact
that OOo 3.3 has been released despite this issue still being outstanding shows
this pretty clearly.

Where do you suggest I need to raise this issue in order for it to be heard?

This is supposed to be the official channel for raising issues to be heard by
the developers. If this is not the official channel for raising issues then what
is? I will gladly raise this issue through the channel that will get it heard if
you tell me where that channel is.

@landydoc

As it stands LO uses the Oracle icons in the startup screen if the Classic
icon style is selected, and the previous OOo icons with any other icon style.
The icons in the New Document menu and the file icons in the file picker are
(depending on the icon style) either the dreaded Oracle icons or theme-related
icons which are also not clearly colour-coded.

Hopefully before LO becomes final all these icons will have been replaced by new
colour-coded ones, but as it stands this issue IS NOT solved in LO.

Where on earth have you imagined anyone has ever suggested using thugs with
guns to try to force the OOo developers to change their software?

Certainly no on has on this page, indeed searching the whole page for the words
thugs and guns only returns ONE occurrence of each word on the entire page,
and they are both in your post YOUR post!

@tanstaafl

What gave you the ridiculous idea that all laws are enforced at gunpoint?
That is completely untrue.

If you know a single incident where any software development company anywhere in
the world has been forced to obey any disability discrimination legislation at
gunpoint then please provide a link to the report of that incident from a
reputable news agency. Until you can provide such a link I will assume that no
such incident has ever occurred, and your belief that all laws are enforced at
gunpoint is complete fantasy.

None of which has got anything to do with the issue at hand, which is the damage
that has been done to OOo's usability by the lack of colour-coded icons.

@tanstaafl

of course I am entirely serious. It may be true in some third-world, corrupt
country that laws are enforced at gunpoint, but it is certainly not true in the
civilised world

I have never heard of a single incident anywhewre in the world where a software
company has been forced to obey disability discrimination laws at gunpoint. Can
you provide a link to a news report of such an incident?

Also, no one has ever suggested using thugs with guns to try to force
the OOo developers to change their software.

So to summarise, neither your claim that someone here suggested using thugs with
guns to try to force the OOo developers to change their software, nor the claim
that all laws are enforced at gunpoint have any basis is reality.

Just to set the record straight, I am not living in a fantasy world.

Not can we please get back to the issue at hand, stop falsely accusing users of
advocating behavior they have never advocated, stop making ludicrous claims
about law enforcement, and stop falsely accusing anyone able to see how untrue
your claims are of living in a fantasy world.

Sorry to drag this irrelevant discussion on for one more post, but I find being
falsely accused of living in a fantasy world to be a hurtful attack on my
character, and I feel it ids my right to defend myself from it and set the
record straight.

How does one go about getting an issue added to this?

I've counted four separate requests to add issue 112141 Reintroduce color codes
for mime type icons, but although the original poster has continued to add
issues to this thread, they do not appear to be reading any of the requests
placed here.

Is there some other place we need to go to get this very important issue added?
If so then please advise us what we need to do.

What does target 3.x mean? What precise number is x?

Can someone please change this target to the precise version number of whatever
release is scheduled next (either 3.2.3 or 3.3, whichever happens first).

Also, can someone please advise how to add this issue to the 3.3 stopper list?
There have been numerous requests added as comments to that issue, but although

I have modified the 3.2.1 Linux mimetype and application icons to have easily
distinguishable colours.

On Mandriva extracting this tar.gz file to /usr/share/icons/gnome,
/use/share/icons/hicolor and /use/share/icons/locolor seems to have replaced all
the monochrome OOo icons on the system. The procedure should be the same of
similar for most Linux systems but I can't definitely confirm this.

Note that I have no graphic design experience. These icons may not be
professional quality, but I think they look OK and they are a lot more easily
distinguishable than Oracle's icons.

Just realised I saved the wrong png file for the 48x48 non-ODF text document
icon. Uploading corrected version.

I'm working on a way to correct the icons used within OOo (toolbar icons,
startup screen, OOo file picker) next. Only working on Linux for the time being
but might try to sort this out on Windows soon, unless anyone else volunteers to
convert my work.

There's nothing to say the colours have to be identical to the colours of the MS
icons, then only requirement is that the dominant icon colour is different for
each file type.

If there is a legal issue with copying the colours from MS icons then don't copy
their exact colours, use a (possibly only very slightly) different set of
colours.

I have not seen any mention of any legal issues anyway. The official
documentation only refers to changing the icons in line with the new brand, it
does not mention the need for colour codes. This suggests that they simply
rushed the re-branding and never thought about usability.

@tommy27:

I am not convinced we need an options of non colour-coded icons. I can see no
logical reason for anyone choosing icons that do not work in preference to ones
that do.

The important issue here is that the default icon set needs to be colour-coded.

@tommy27:

Where did I ever say the old icons should be default?

If the developers want to make new properly coloured icons in line with their
branding then they can do.

The important thing is that colour coded icons (whether the old icons or a new
set in line with the new branding) need to be default. There does not need to be
an option to make the product more difficult to use, since no one would have any
reason to use that option.

Colour coded icons need to be default.

1. The default setup is the first impression users and reviewers get. First
impressions are very important in selling any product.

2. A product that works properly straight away is much better a product that
requires the user to do work to get it to work properly.

There is no need for an option to make your own life more difficult, since there
is no reason anyone would ever need to use that option.

If anything 99464 DEPENDS ON THIS ISSUE, but certainly not the other way round.

What exactly does depends on mean on this site? I always assumed that the site
was in English, and in English This issue deopends on Issue 99468 means that
it requires Issue 99468 to be solved before this one can be.

That is not the case. One duplicate can perfectly well be resolved on its own
without any requirement for all other duplicates to be resolved. It would,
however, make sense to say that resolving all duplicates requires this one to be
resolved. Hence the dependency between these two issues as it stands is the
wrong way round.

While there may be other issues (no one ever said this was the one and only
issue ever to affect OOo), the point remains that THIS ISSUE is the duplicate
insert formula commands. Any other design change is a SEPARATE ISSUE, and
should be reported and processed as such.

The obvious solution is to change the command for inserting an OOo Math object
to Insert Math Object. Indeed this is what the command was called in previous
versions.

@es:
What is your interest in making a perfectly trivial issue sound so much more
complicated that it really is? To state in simple terms:

The problem:
Two different commands are both named insert formula.

The solution:
Change the name of one or both commands.

That is all there is to it. Making this one simple change IS a solution to this
problem, and IS a one-liner! Any other change is a separate issue, and should be
dealt with as such.

Is a patch really necessary to change the displayed name of a single command?
What would a patch for such a trivial change contain anyway?

All that is required is for someone who knows where the displayed names of these
commands are stored in the source files to change one of them.

What patch does anyone need to change one line of text? How would any patch help
them do this anyway?

A first step in filing any request has to be to state what is being requested.
This issue does not do this. Nowhere does this issue state what specific changes
are being requested.

This issue can never be resolved. Without having the slightest idea what you are
asking for, no one can possibly act on your request.

@lalf

I have read all the attachments, an nowhere in any of these attachments is any
indication of what you are proposing OOo should do!

All I can deduce is that you think OOo should have context sensitive toolbars,
which it already does.

As this request doesn't even state anywhere what it is a request for, it is
completely meaningless!

As of version 2 (and to a lesser degree before that), OOo already has context
sensitive toolbars.

This is a request for a feature that the product already has, and as such is
invalid.

I've just installed 2.0.169 (also under Mandriva 2006 with KDE 3.4), and in this
build KDE integration is not so much partially broked as completely non
existant, and the Gnome integration is a little flawed as well.

This build doesn't recognise ANY KDE widgets or colours, and displays everything
with the MSO2003-like widegts in a dull grey coulor.

Under Gnome the toolbar grippies don't display properly (if at all). (I don't
use Gnome, so I don't actually know if this happens under Gnome, but it
certainly does if I force OOo to use GTK widgets under KDE)

In this build KDE integration never works, and deleting the profile has no
effect on this.

Compare OOo 2.0.169 (left) with OOo 2.0.2 (right) in the attatched screenshot.

First of all I don't really know where to file this request, so please
move/reasign it if it's in the wrong place.

Currently the Mozilla plugin only supports opening native OOo or OpenDocument
files inside Mozilla. It would be much more useful if the plugin could allow
files in any format that OOo can open to be opened inside Mozilla.

When a toolbar is undocked by dragging it off the toolbar area with the mouse,
it should then appear as an undocked palette under the mouse cursor when the
mouse button is released. In OOo 1.9.112 however, it appears in a different
place to the cursor.

Where undocked toolbars appear seems to differ depending on the desktop
environment, but is wrong in all Linux environments I have tested except Gnome
(KDE, IceWM, WindowMaker). It seems to be correct in the Windows version of OOo.

I think it's called the toolbar selector - the block at the right had side of
the toolbar that gives the toolbar context menu when you click on it.

Anyway, in the Mozilla plugin, clicking on it doesn't do anything.

For me there was no problem with GTK themes in OOo, and the VCL theme really
does look ugly. There should at least be an option to use GTK themes, even if it
is not compulsary.

When the toolbars were redesigned for OOo2, all the buttons on the toolbars that
were short click for default action, long click for choice of actions were
replaced by buttons with a separate arrow button for the options.

When this was done, the Up one level button on the standard Open/Save dialog
boxes was not similarly ajusted, so is now inconsistent with the rest of the
interface.

This button should be redesigned to give it the same behavoir as all the other
similar buttons. Hope this makes sense.

drichard:

This should really be a separate issue. While allowing changes to the number of
displayed items may provide a work-around to the problem depending on how it is
implemented, it woul not be a real soultion. Indeed, if the configuration option
oinly changes the number of items displayed, and does not change the number
storred in memory, it would not provide a solution at all. What is needed is a
simple option to remove all storred file paths from memory.

As for changing this issue title - the issue described by drichard is not the
same issue, so should be handled as a separate issue.

Can we please have the native look back under KDE before OOo final? The built in
look is horrible, and forcing people to use it is a HUGE step backwards. Since
OOo looks so ugly now, I'll be forced to look for another office suite if it
doesn't get any better.

I am experimenting with Oo1.9.87 on Mandrake 10.1 Community. I am viewing a
document via the OOo Mozilla plugin, and I undock the toolbar.

Initially the toolbar floats above the Mozilla window, as it should, but then if
I click anywhere on the Mozila window or its border, Mozilla comes in front of
the toolbar. This appears to be a new problem in 1.9.87, which I can't remember
experiencing in previous versions.

Since forcing the toolbar into a permanently locked state would result in a loss
of useful functionality, it is not the best solution to this problem (the lack
of any way to restore the toolbar). It would be far better to approach the root
of the problem.

I would suggest a far better solution would be to add a view toolbar item to
the context menu.

Just to add that I have done a bit more testimg, and found that this problem is
only present under KDE and GNOME (of the environments I have tried it under).
There does not seem to be a problem under Windows, IceWM or TWM.

Hope this helps identify the problem.

The general UI of OOo 2.0 is dedicated to look like the other applications
(according to the system defaultsWindows Theme / Window manager settings)

What Window manager are the toolbar gradients and shaded activated buttons meant
to fit in with? I have certainly never seen one with these native features, and
I have used most common Window Managers!

Everything is displayed correctly if the Mozilla window is small, but as soon as
I either maximise Mozilla, or enlarge the window over a certain size, the right
edge of the OOo plugin area is covered by a flat grey area, including the
vertical scrollbar.I have tested this for Writer and Calc documents.

For Writer, the horizontal scrollbar is also missing if the window is enlarged.

I have checked this in the latest release (m74), and it certainly IS
reproducible, just as I described, and not solved at all!

PS - Will you PLEASE stop saying that an issue is resolved in 1.9mX, when:

*  1.9mX doesn't even exist yet
* When 1.9mX finally is released, the issue hasn't changes one bit since it was
reported.

Dishonestly caliming that an issue is resolved does nothing to actually resolve
the issue, and causes much frustartion to anyone with an interest in that issue!

What version is this fixed in? I have checked the latest developer release
(m71s1), and it certainly isn't fixed there.

Is this another case of saying fixed in {some build that hasn't even been
released yet}, when it turns out not to be fixed when that version is released?
This issue does seem to have been through this process quite a few times!
