iha,
I'm sorry - that _really_ wasn't meant as bashing at all. I just
fundamentally believe that many _core_ features that users need are missing and
I have to ask myself why that might be.
I'm aware that SUN has _many_ developers working on OO but yet the core
features are missing. This can only mean they are working on things that the
"users" don't value as much. In product development, it is imperative that the
design team do market studies and test group studies to find out what is
important to the customers. I'm just suggesting that this might be missing - it
was _not_ intended as a bash but more of a recommendation that SUN do some
serious shadowing of their users to see how they use a spreadsheet.

1) Speed is still an issues
2) Humans can interpret information through graphics quickly. This is the
reason Calc _needs_ a good graphics package.
3) Data is just data. Scientists, engineers, managers, and most others want to
learn from that data which means applying statistics and trendlines to that
data. This is a core feature, no exceptions.

I hope to graduate in about 6-8 weeks. Let me know if you are serious about
your willingness to work with me on this. I can help with the curve fitting
theories but probably not the actual implementation of the code. I've offered
my help before on trendlines and it wasn't taken. I'm more of a
engineer/mathematician than a programmer although I do quite a bit of
programming for my research - I don't know how the OO is put together. If the
theory is missing or unknown, then that is where I can help. Again, I'm tied up
for about 6-8 weeks but can point a programmer in the right direction for
learning about curve fitting to minimize error...

People interested in this "defect" or "feature" should put a vote... or 2 so
that the developers realize how fundamental this is to spreadsheets.

I'm now convinced that Sun should send their programmers off for a week to work
with users so that they can see for themselves how spreadsheets are used.
Hopefully, this will motivate them to work on things that are fundamentally
missing.

Hi gang,
I realize that trendline plotting and display is currently being worked on and
I'm hoping that one of the developers notes my comments.

In its current form, plotting a trendline using the "power" option (versus
logarithm, linear, etc) isn't terribly useful. In general the user should be
able to decide the order of the polynomial being used (e.g. 2nd order, 3rd, 4th,
5th, etc). Having Calc/Chart _only_ using a 2nd order polynomial is pretty
useless. Generally speaking, a best-fit analysis is performed on the order of
polynomial chosen to be used and then the curve is plotted and the equation
revealed.

In MANY cases that I've encountered, a higher order polynomial is required.

The logic for determining the 2nd order polynomial equation that best fits
should be able to be ported to an nth-order polynomial so the work shouldn't be
too difficult.

I'd recommend a greyed-out user input field on the GUI used when determining the
type of curve fit - if polynomial is chosen, then the greyed-out box becomes
active and the user can input the order of polynomial chosen and then OO goes
off and does its thing. This is similar to how Excel works and, in general,
other curve-fitting packages.

I wouldn't call this an enhancement as the current form isn't really useful
until it can do higher order polynomials.

TIA,
enmane

Nothing is "wrong" with it other than the massive amounts of hard drive space
consumed. I prefer to keep my system light as a system administrator that makes
images of the HD for use later, I'd prefer not to waste bandwidth on information
that is no longer in use.

How about an "option" such as a check box that allows the user to choose remove
the old files? You know, a warning such as "if you check this box you will not
be able to revert to the previous pre-patched version without reinstalling the
entire application" and let the user decide.

I realize HD space may not be an issue for some but it is for me and I'd imagine
others so why not a simple option to allow us to remove the old stuff. Yes, I'm
one of those users that also strips the XP update backups ;-)

Not to be a pest but is this _really_ fixed this time. Has the source of the
problem been truly identified. I'm sorry to remain skeptical but this has been
fixed about 3 times already. I'd like to know whether or not I need to remain
on the lookout for data corruption of my files or not. It's important to me.

no need to. I just grabbed the document from
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=77372

and did the following...
1) rename to .zip
2) enter .zip file and edit contents.xml & remove all offending _5f except 1
before and 1 after as recommended in other bug reports. I also did this and
removed ALL offending _5f entries but the results were the same.
3) save and add to the .zip archive
4) rename to .odt
5) open with OO 2.3
6) scroll down to the various tables and right click to update the entries
7) save file and exit
8) rename .zip
9) open up zip file and examine contents.xml
10) Note with blissfulness that there are additional _5f entries.
11) repeat 1-10 and watch the entries grow!

This issue is NOT fixed. It's still ongoing with a research document of mine
and I've stripped away all offending _5f entries except for two and after 2
saves, I'm at 4 of them.

Seriously guys, what's going on? This is a HUGE bug, reported numerous times,
with the end result that documents won't load eventually. Lots of visibility
with the worst end result possible - you'd think it would receive the attention
it deserves and a fix that actually works.

I've reopened this issue under 82443

I realize that this has been 'fixed' in previous versions but maybe 3-times is a
charm. I'm using 2.3 and went into some malformed contents.xml documents and
stripped out the _5f entries and then updated the document in 2.3 and saved it.
Upon inspection of the newly updated contents.xml file, the _5f entries were
again there.

this bug has been reported in issues 63269 and 46683 as fixed but apparently it
isn't UNLESS, for some reason, it requires a clean slate creation of a document.
Unfortunately, IMHO, it isn't fixed as there are going to be countless
documents out there with the _5f garbage in them. A true 'fix' would repair the
offending lines of code and then repair the offending 'contents.xml' files.

Anyhow, this is still ongoing with my documents. This is a research document
that I can't share but this has been reported for YEARS now so it shouldn't be
that hard to find a document where this is an issue. Grab one of the documents
from the previous bug reports to verify yourself.

I'm not sure where to post this but since most of the OO devs are SUN employees
which also work on SO, then I hope this message gets over there. I tried
finding a forum at Sun for SO but I couldn't find one.

In short, SO installs patches like a pig that craves magnetic bits. I've
installed every patch since 8 came out and the last was patch 8. I decided to
check the HD after it was done and it was consuming 1GB of HD space. This was
ridiculous so I decided to poke my nose around to see what was going on and I
found the following,

1) SO keeps old versions of files around. Why, oh why, this is just as bad as
MS keeping patches around.
2) Even though the initial install specified that I wanted the EN-US language
installed, every patch installed after the initial install continues to install
every single language. Why, oh why?

Cleaning results...
Before - 1GB
After - 330MB

I recommend the following,
1) have the install script remove files that have been renamed - no point in
keeping them around.
2) have the install script figure out which language is installed and ONLY
install the language that the user has installed.

Looking forward to 2.4...actually, 3.0 but we'll have to wait. Keep up the good
work especially on the speed front.

I would like to request the ability to add sub-equations to the main equation
numbering scheme.

Current method: (assuming chapter 3)
sum of the forces in x-direction = 0 (3.1)
F1x + F2x = 0 (3.2)

sum of the forces in y-direction = 0 (3.3)
F1y + F2y = 0 (3.4)

In our technical journals, this type of formatting is frowned upon whereas the
recommended way of doing this would be

sum of the forces in x-direction = 0 (3.1a)
F1x + F2x = 0 (3.1b)

sum of the forces in y-direction = 0 (3.2a)
F1y + F2y = 0 (3.2b)

In this manner, the reader knows that equations 3.2b is the child of equation
3.2a and not an entirely new equation.

Any feedback would be great...

Could you add 79486 to this one also as I think they are related? There is an
example document in that issue also that has temperamental behavior - this
results in loss productivity of the user and great frustrations.
OD,
I'm not sure I follow. If I create a new document with a clean slate then are
you saying there is "hard" numbering assigned to the Heading styles? If so,
then that isn't right. The "hard" numbering should only be applied if the user
goes to tools->outline numbering and _then_ decides to have hard numbering
applied to those styles.

I've created documents with only 2 types of styles - heading and default - and
OO still seems to screw up the numbering sequence. I use the Heading styles as
described in the OO help for creating paragraph sequences and it still gets
confused.

I realize that sometimes that this is a user problem but I have to tell you that
I'm very methodical and thorough when trying to demonstrate a problem/bug and
this behavior is extremely odd/counterintuitive/disruptive. I also don't follow
your explanation of the discussion as to what is occurring. It's not so much
the terminology but there are details that you know that are not included in the
discussion such as,
-what is "hard" numbering?
-what is "soft" numbering?
-how are styles automatically linked to outline styles?
-which styles have numbering rule sets automatically applied?
-which styles have outline styles automatically applied?
These details are what create confusion and it would be good to define any terms
used before discussing them. Your effort is to be applauded - thank you.
The end result is that there is an inconsistent behavior that I can attribute to
OO solely.
I've spent hours/days (and several paper revisions) trying to figure out how
OO functions and each time changing my thought process only to realize that OO
is inconsistent and that no matter what I do, I can't get the behavior that is
expected or desired.
The problem may just lie in the fact that we're creating documents with pages
upon pages and several layers of numbering and maybe these haven't been tested
well enough - it's possible.

Regina, I owe you a pint for figuring out what the problem is BUT there is one
issue which is that I never created a list. All that I ever did was using
Heading1 or Heading 2 so why is OO getting confused with a list and a heading?
In other words, I am forced to set them all to default and then all to heading
but they were created in the reverse order (i.e. default, then heading) but now
there is a "list" which I never created.
Anyhow, you figured out how I can salvage my papers easily enough but I'm sure
that there is a bug in OO somewhere due to this having to be an issue in the
first place.
Thanks again for figuring it out and for a thorough explanation.

I'm sorry but it isn't working. I don't _want_ to shut off the numbering. OO
is losing the proper numbering sequence. Please reopen that paper and note that
the numbering sequence is
Chapt 1 (Heading 1)
1.1 (Heading 2)
1.2 (Heading 2)
1.3 (Heading 2)
1.4 (Heading 2)
1.5 (Heading 2)
1.1 (Heading 2) - this is where it starts acting weird - If it's a heading 2
then it should be 1.6 NOT 1.1. Shutting off the "restart numbering" doesn't fix
the problem either.
1.2 (Heading 2) - this should also now be 1.7 if everything is working correctly
1.6 (Heading 2) somehow refers to the 1.5 entry and doesn't add to the 1.2
previous entry.
1.3 (Heading 2) which is after 1.6 should at least be 1.7 but it isn't.
Ideally, it would have been 1.9.

changing these things to Heading 3 just highlights the problems also.
It is _not_ fixed as far as I'm concerned. There must be a communication
problem or you aren't using it the way that I am. I am _not_ using it
incorrectly, according to the documentation. Please read up on the usage of the
outline mode in the documentation if you aren't accustomed to writing papers
with chapters and subchapters.

Is it possible to look at the comments made for issue 77372 and the attachments
added after May 19th as that issue has all the information and I'd hate to have
to recreate everything considering that it's all there already.
I created a step-by-step approach to recreate the problem on that issue with
an examination of the XML problems also and put those up there. In other words,
I put a lot of effort into reporting that bug and thought that they were the
same bug; after being informed that they aren't, I'm not sure I _can_ create all
that documentation again as I'm pretty busy with my schedule right now.
Please examine the files that were posted with the 77372 issue and if that
isn't enough _then_ I'll do what I can provided my schedule allows.

See Issue 77372 where I note that OO will make mistakes with the numbering
sequence when using Outline mode. That issue started due to a custom definition
of outlines but when I created a new paper without the custom definition (just
using Tools->outline) it would forget its place in the chapter/subchapter. I
started noticing this and posted it there. The original issue was fixed but not
the issue with outline and I was told to create a new bug report for the outline
problem.
Please see the posts starting after

I know that this started off as a problem with custom styles but during the
investigation we discovered that it also occurs with numbering without custom
styles. It would occur by simply using the outline mode (preferred method).
  Was this fixed also?

Sorry to see that it took so long. I was hoping it was something relatively
easy. Thanks for all the hard work!

I'm back again.
Two things have happened...

For some reason the page numbering got screwy even within the same style sheet.
 It went, 1, 2 (page break w/same style sheet) 1, 2, 3

Even more odd was the fact that deleting and recreating the table of contents
reset the file name to something more manageable than 5f_5f_5f_ .. which
grew exponentially BUT after a period of saving the dreaded 5f_5f_5f_
.. returned. It looks like it can't be avoided.

Good luck. I can't tell if my effort is wasted or not seeing as I haven't heard
anything back - sorry to say that I won't be donating to OO anymore. It is, by
far, the only FOSS project where I've put so much effort into only to be
seemingly ignored. I'll keep posting bugs but the lack of feedback will make me
donate my cash to projects where progress is made in areas where the consumer
cares (i.e. speed, stability, footprint size, fundamental things work w/o
question, etc). I'm always shocked that the integrated 5.2 environment is _so_
much faster than what we have now - after 7-8 yrs and being told that the reason
of tearing it apart was to make it faster and more lightweight. I don't know if
it the coding or the language choice but things are considerably slower.

What is VERY peculiar is that it completely redefined the heading and subheading
styles for Chapter 2 also.

Originally Chapter 2 was of style P15 and the first subheading of style P13

After the deleting of the chapter 1 subheadings Chapter 2 was of style P14 and
the subheadings of style P15

What's going on??

Anyhow, let me know if this is enough information otherwise I could continue to
investigate, LOL.

Great news - more info for you guys

Take a look at the document that is most recently attached. Go to the page with
the Chapter 1 - Introduction.

>From the bottom, going up do the following
1) Delete the 1.4 entry and note any changes on the next page (i.e. Beginning of
chapter 2)
2) Delete the 1.3 entry and note any changes on the next page (i.e. Beginning of
chapter 2)
3) Delete the 1.2 entry and note any changes on the next page (i.e. Beginning of
chapter 2)
4) Delete the 1.1 entry and note any changes on the next page (i.e. Beginning of
chapter 2)

Not until the last deletion does chapter 2 revert to chapter 1 leaving _two_
chapter 1s.

They were all created together using the same technique but OO gets screwy when
the user decides to go back and change/modify the entries.

It is still possible to work around this by copying and pasting the Chapter 2
formatting to chapter 1 but they should have been the same to begin with and
were created together so the P12 style for Introduction and the P15 style for
Background and Literature Review should not have occurred which means something
is going wrong with the Automatic Style Creation.

then there is another style created for Chapter 3 which is P16. Somehow 3
different styles were created for the same heading type. I'm sure this also
occurred with the sub-heading types which means there are entirely too many
styles and no wonder why it can't keep track of which style to use or how to
keep the numbering straight.

Let me know what you guys find out as soon as possible as this is quickly
turning into a nightmare for me.

solution to table problem - delete table, recreate new table. It would be nice
to know,
a) why this started to begin with.
b) why the name continually grows.

Who knows? I've found a way around it for now. Not perfect but there are ways
to fix what is broken and it wouldn't be possible without the open standard.

Ok, left to figure out is why the heading numberings do what they're doing.

On another note, any grumblings around the OO community of developers about
rewriting portions of OO to improve speed and responsiveness? That would be
great not to mention that SUN should be interested in doing so since more and
more apps are going to hand-held devices indicating a smaller footprint
requirement. Just a thought.

What is recommended to tame the table style name (i.e. 5f) problem? The table
name is growing at an exponential rate 1->2->4->16 instances of 5f on either
side?

Is there a recommended name? If so, could you _show_ me in detail what a proper
name would be that wouldn't wreak havoc on the document.

TIA

ok, I've attached a document that shows the problems. Please look in section 3
by 3.4 and 3.5. You'll see the counting starts at 1 again. I've also edited
the contents.xml file to reduce the string length to a single 5f of the
offending table style; upon saving the document I encountered 2 more for a
total of 3 5fs so something is broken here.

I've found a temporary work-around that works.
Typical usage until yesterday...
I would type some text, highlight it, and call use the pulldown style to call
it Heading 2 which would cause the text to change to a Heading_2 style with the
proper numbering. Unknown to me, it was creating a P12 style and using that
style (I'm guessing).

Current Usage
When I repeat the same as above it will now use the style Heading_20_2
(probably the default style). I don't know why the behavior has changed from
selecting a P12 style to the default Heading_20_2 style but this explains why
the numbering gets reset. If you highlight the 3.4 you'll see the style come
up as Heading 2 and if you highlight the 1.1 you'll see the style come up as
Heading 2.

Work-around
Select the text used for 3.4 (Revisiting the Original ECVT Concept) and paste
it down below and the proper numbering sequence will continue. Now just change
the text.

I think I've done all that I can to isolate the problem. I just don't know why
it worked for about 6 days as described above and now will no longer continue
the numbering when selecting Heading_2 from the pull-down list. The user
doesn't get the option to select the P12 version of the style (what Word does -
and annoys the $#%^ out of me).

for background info,
I originally went into Tools-> outline numbering and changed the formatting to
reflect what the university wanted. Everything worked great for a week.

I'm going to see what happens if I remove the Heading_20_2 reference from the
head of the contents.xml file with the hopes that the next time I create a
Heading_2 entry it will select P12.

Thank you for your replies,

My points are these,
1)Why create a whole new style at all. Why not just reference the default file
within styles.xml and only add at the text position required which could
override all of the default settings except . Currently there is a new
style created. I understand how following the older HTML way might actually
enlarge the file size NOT creating a new style every time and adding
 at every instance.

It just seems that there are font styles created that aren't used. Is there a
mechanism within OO that regularly goes through contents.xml and cleans it up
for orphaned settings?
I'm sure the OO team has their reasons for doing it the way they do. I'd just
like to be privy to those reasons - shine some light on me, would you? Surely
there was a study which showed the merits of doing it either way which was the
reason behind the change.

2. I don't know _what_ is creating the problem but there is something that is
_clearly_ causing this problem within OO and even does so for small files that
are newly created. It might not be automatic style creations but it might be
also. I won't know until I dig more and I won't have time to do as such for a
while because of my research.

3. Unfortunately, I can't share the extent of the document with you guys as it
_is_ sensitive in nature being research material with funding and NDA issues.
When I get a minute this week I'll do what I can to minimize the sensitivity of
the document without removing the offending XML issues in hopes that we can
catch whatever is causing this problem.

4. I don't know what created the super-long 5f style name but I can assure you
that it wasn't by editing the XML file. I assure you that I wouldn't choose to
create an OO document by editing the XML files, as to me, that's a painfully
long way to do so.

this will make you smile... somehow, this style name was automagically chosen

Ok, I have to rant here. I found that the P's were the automatically created
styles for when I underlined or made bold the existing default style. Somehow,
OO has decided to rename almost all of my headings into a automatically-created
style -> NOTE: I did NOT do this.

Anyhow, onto my rant...
All of a sudden, it screwed up the order of my sections & subsections - it
just decided to start at 1.1 in between 3.4 and 3.5 - ugghhh. It all has to do
with the "automatically creating styles" that MS does and it sucks. If I am
using the "default" style and want to make it bold instead of regular it goes
and creates a whole new style called something like "P_X" which is the same
thing that word does. If you then decide to bold and underline another style is
created. If you decide to just underline, another new style. Change the font
size, another style for each separate font size and God-forbid you decide to
bolt, underline, or italicize any of them - you can see how this creates a mess.
In this day and age, with computer programs doing so much, you'd think it
would be easy to create a program that just says "hey, I'm a bold version of the
default" and only carry the "bold" style in combination with a pointer to the
"default" style to reduce all of the extra space required by keeping multiple
copies for every little change.
I thought the whole point of CSS and XML was the ability to cross-reference
styles. It makes no sense (and admittedly, there might be a very good reason
for doing it this way) but WHY WHY WHY create an automatically created style for
every little change. If the only difference to a default style is a bold,
underline, italicize, or font size - does a whole new style really need to be
created? Why not just carry along the changes
Honestly, this is one reason that I STOPPED using MS WORD 2003, it got to be
_ridiculous_ with the number of styles that one had to keep track of. The only
difference, as I see it with OO, is that OO hides it in the content.xml file so
the user can't see it.
Ok, problem identified. Solution still a mystery. Who do we talk to about
fixing the problem as it stands and who do we talk to about making a more
permanent change (if it is desired) so that new styles aren't created unless a
significant change is made. Surely, this is a waste of space and also
problematic - as I've proven ;-)

In other words, I know from CSS that I can create a style sheet and leave
everything alone using the default settings but if I want to make a change for a
particular new paragraph then I just _reference_ the default style and make
whatever minor change at that paragraph and then end the change afterwards so
that the next paragraph goes back to the original style.

anyhow, I'm exhausted and not looking forward to the hours it will take to fix
things.

I've attached a file. Things have been working pretty well for a week and now
they've gotten screwy again. Take a look at page 12 or 13 and you can see how
the numberings have gotten out of order and I don't know why.
If anyone can help me out ASAP then that would be great as I have to deliver
this paper TOMORROW - go figure. It's been one of those weekends...

Even if I have to go and hack on the zipped XML files - I'm fine with that too.

YAY! I'm not crazy ;-) -> Well, that's still to be determined ;-)

Ok, it looks like you found it.
1) Do you still want an example document
2) Is there any way that I can get access to a fixed version of OO in advance so
that I can stop screwing with my document?
3) Should I just edit the underlying XML documents to correctly fix this problem
- if possible?
4) Any idea on when 2.3 will be available?
5) Any idea when Staroffice will incorporate this patch as I typically use that
and the problem exists there as well.

Sorry for all the questions and I realize you are doing your best but now that
the problem has been identified I'm hoping that I can get back to typing my
thesis instead of bug hunting ;-).

yes, that would be useful if I understood the language ;-)
Why couldn't it be in english, spanish, or italian ;-)

I've just done more testing and ANY changes to the order or entries of
subsections thoroughly confuses Writer. In other words, things are fine if I
knew in advance how many subsections I needed and then just created the Heading1
and Heading 2 entries and then went back to fill them in but if I create them as
I need them, and God forbid I go back and change one, then things get all messed
up.

Much help is needed and I'm struggling for a reason to stick with OO and not go
back to Word.

any news on this as I'm currently writing my thesis and Writer decides to
"forget" what level I'm on. I could be doing a bunch of level 2 subsections in
chapter 2 and then out of nowhere it'll revert back to chapter 1.

For example,
chapter 1
1.1
1.2

chapter 2
2.1
2.2
1.1
1.2

How the heck is this possible? How the heck am I the first to report it? ;-)

Hi guys,
More bad news. I'm trying to write my dissertation using this OO and I'm
finding that even using the Tools->Outline Numbering method isn't foolproof.
Sometimes it just "forgets" how to properly format Level 2. I end up having to
go through hoops to make it remember.

If it is a level 2 then the numbering sequence should be consecutive when under
the same Level 1 and if the level 1 changes then the level 2 should reflect
those changes. For example,

Chapter 1 - Level 1 (entry #1)
1.1 - level 2 (entry #1)
1.2 - level 2 (entry #2)
Chapter 2 - Level 1 (entry #2)
2.1 - Level 2 (entry #3 or entry 2-1, however OO "sees" it)
2.2 - Level 2 (entry #4 or entry 2-2, however OO "sees" it)

But I just recently ran into a problem where OO did the following

Chapter 1
1.1
1.1
Chapter 2
1.1
1.1

I've bumped this up in priority as both ways of doing this can easily reveal the
flaws and this is a critical component to any word processor.

[sw-issues] [Issue 77320] header or footer NOT in ma rgins as in MS Word

I'm not sure it's so much that I want to change the current behavior as much as
I believe that the current behavior isn't as it was originally intended. I
can't see why the current implementation would be used considering how most of
us writing think of margins and headers/footers. They are to be contained
_within_ the margin. The current implementation doesn't work that way at all
and is confusing.

I'm also reluctant to post this as a documentation issue as I'm not sure that
this is a documentation issue as opposed to an implementation issue.

Sun needs to decide which is the preferred way to do things first - I'm
optimistic that they'll agree with the way that most other word processors do
things - and _then_ decide whether or not to call this a bug or enhancement and
_then_ decide how to re/write the documentation.

I've confirmed your method. The only difference is that your method can be
rectified by hitting the tab to make 1st level a 2nd level again whereas mine
becomes a nightmare to deal with.

Thanks for looking into this and confirming the behavior. These days, I wonder
if I'm nuts or the only one reporting bugs ;-) Surely, I'm not the first to
encounter this behavior so why am I the only one reporting it.

I do believe that this should be bumped up in priority though.

I realize that this isn't the recommended way of doing things but I strongly
believe that if "I" could do it this way and it is confusing for me then it will
be for a wide variety of people. I've spent hours trying figure out a way to
get chapters and sub-chapters to work properly and I'm afraid some of my
frustration was apparent on the post. I'm sorry for that.

I'll try to be clear about what I did and how to replicate the procedure...

If the user begins a new document and then opens the "styles and formatting"
window where they then click on the "list styles" icon and then modify the List
1 entry.
Modifying List 1 entry,
1) click on the outline tab
2) click 2nd row, third column
3) click options tab
4) click on "1" under level - and add "chapter" in the "before" box and a ". "
in the "after" box
5) click on "2" under level - add a ". " in the "after" box
6) click on "3" under level - add a ". " in the "after" box
- at this point, the preview looks just the way that I want it...
7) click "ok" and exit

Now modify the paragraph styles so that they refer to the proper outline style
1) Click on the "paragraph styles" icon in the "styles and formatting" window
2) Modify the Heading 1 entry by clicking on the "numbering" tab and choosing
the just-modified "List 1"
3) Repeat the previous step for Heading 2 and Heading 3.

Now, everything works as it should as the paragraph styles are referencing the
proper List 1 style and using those settings as it's number style. Add several
different lines of text with carriage returns and change the paragraph style to
Heading 1, then Heading 2, then Heading 3 and you'll see that everything works
as it is supposed to.

It should look like,
Chapter 1.
1. 1. asdfasfasdfasdfa
1. 1. 1 adasfasdfasfasfd
Chapter 2.
2. 1. asdaasdasdfasfas
2. 1. 2 asdfasdfasfasfsdaf

_this_ is where the fun begins...

Go back to the "styles and formatting" menu and edit the "Heading 2" paragraph
style and click on the numbering tab again. Change the style to any other style
and click ok. Now go back and change it to List 1 again.

add a line of text and change it to a Heading 2 paragraph style, then hit return
for the next line of text...

You should find the following...
Chapter 1
Chapter 2 adsasdfasfas
2. 1. 1 asdasdfasfdas

Yes, I realize that Tools->Outline Numbering is a better tool for accomplishing
this but this is a nasty inconsistency that should be squashed.

So long as things are entered in the exact order that I outlined previously then
things work fine but if any changes to the order are made or the configuration
then things get messy quickly. Changing a style midstream screws up the
formatting. Once it's screwed up in the document, it is a mess and the user
needs to start fresh. This is a mess, IMHO.

On a related note and maybe better suited for another bug report is that changes
to Tools-> Outline Numbering then cancels any user-configured changes. If I
make changes to List 1 and then use Outline Numbering then decide that I want to
use List 1 again, all of my settings are gone.

There is some serious work that needs to go on in this area as it is very flaky
and I'm pretty tired of tripping across bugs that are so easily discovered.
Let's hope that the world doesn't adopt OO (as the press is claiming) because it
isn't ready, IMHO, and doing so would be a net negative for FOSS.

In short, including a numbering style doesn't work reliably and a slight breeze
knocks it over. Any changes to the document, formatting, or the styles causes
it to get confused.

The header or footer is _not_ in the margins as is discussed in the OO help.
I believe that this used to work properly a while back but I'll have to fire up
5.2 to verify. Anyhow, the help is incorrect and I'd prefer to have it
rectified as opposed to changing the help information. It's preferable to be
able to install the header or footer _within_ the margins as opposed to have a
footer and then have to calculate what the required margin needs to be to work
with other pages that don't have a header or footer.

This is how MS Word works and IMHO is the way that it should function.
Imagine a document that wants 1" top margins for all pages so that the text
begins at 1" and then the author wants to put a header on some of the pages.
This requires the author to create separate page styles for pages that have or
don't have the headers.
- if there is a header then the margin would be about 0.6" and then the header
would take up the remaining 0.4" requiring the author to figure this stuff out.
The text would then follow the header. If the author wants the header higher
up on the page then the margin needs to be less and the space taken up by the
header needs to increase - this requires too much time to fuss around with
details.
- if there is no header then the margins are set to 1" and the text follows.

Preferably, the implementation would be as follows,
1)the author chooses the margin
2)the author chooses a (-)dimension to move the header _within_ the margin or an
offset from the page edge.

I've spent about 2 hrs researching this problem and it isn't in the various
documentation manuals, the forums, the help (which is incorrect), and it isn't
even in the differences between MSO and OO information.

I'm a little shocked that this package has been out for so long and this hasn't
been more thoroughly documented.

mrv,
many of us are not coders and can't help in this fashion. I understand your
frustration but understand mine - I've offered to help a coder with the math
involved in regression analysis and haven't been taken up on my offer and that
says something about the "team."

To the rest of you,
Download a copy of the currently-being-developed Chart 2 and try it out. I've
already created 3 bug reports on it. If you don't voice your opinions now then
it will most likely be another 6 yrs before you get your feature included. In
summary, do the following:
1) VOTE - use your points to vote for the issues that are important to you
2) Stop beating this dead horse-they are working on Chart 2 so focus your
energies on fixing Chart 2
3) If you aren't happy with the current implementations and want to try your
luck on something being developed then work with Chart 2 which "should" have
some of the features your looking for and vote for the features that are
missing!

Turn your frustrations into positive actions. Play the game properly!

shouldn't there be a way in Writer to switch it from a frame object to a drawing
object? It shouldn't require the opening of another application.

I do this all the time. I bring in a photo and then use circles and text to
highlight the object but when I move things around they don't move together so I
have to go to Draw to make it work properly. Surely, I can't be the only one
that would want to group these objects together without having to use Draw.

Can't we put a switching feature in Picture properties window under the Type
tab?

I'm leaving this as a Writer problem because I believe that Writer should be a
program that one can use to accomplish what they need to without having to open
another package like Draw.

Hi gang,
When I insert a jpg or a gif and then also create circles over the image to
highlight areas I cannot then group the gif or jpg with the circles. Selecting
the area will group the circles but not the inserted jpg or gif BUT if I cut and
paste the image into Draw and then cut and paste it back into writer it then
works.

Anyone know what is up with this? Why does it work when I cut-and-paste from
Draw but not when inserted?

This might also apply to Impress but I haven't tested it. This method never
fails for me.

Regina, it behaves similarly in the new Chart package also. Actually, that's
the package that I've been testing - I figured I'd help if I could.

I haven't tried it through the legends but don't believe that is the way it
should be intended to work. A user should be able to right-click on the
highlighted line and get the relevant properties menu.

Anyhow, could you bump this over to the Chart fellows as I can't seem to figure
out how - sorry, about that.

Ok, I just tried it out and it does NOT work properly.

Sure, I can tab through and get the line highlighted but then right-clicking and
trying to get the object properties pulls up the regression line formatting
issues.

In other words, the interface/interaction is NOT consistent.

If there is no regression line then right-clicking on the highlighted data line
pulls up the data object properties.

If there is a regression line then right-clicking on the highlighted data line
pulls up the regression object properties which forces the user to highlight the
data line using the tab key and then going up to the menu bars to be able to
change the data object properties.

In short, there are 2 ways to alter data object properties - going to the menu
bar or right-clicking (if no regression line) but when a regression line is
present then the user can ONLY go to the menu bar to change the underlying data
object properties and they MUST use the tab key to get there.

Honestly, this SUCKS as a user interface and if this is going to be left as-is
then don't shoot the messenger when people complain about inconsistent user
interfaces. I've presented the information - do with it what you will but
changing it to anything other than an Open-Defect is shorting the users.

please change this to as an important feature request then because I'd wager
that most people would not expect this behavior as it isn't intuitive in the
least. Most people want to click on the object and not use the tab key to
scroll through 20 objects (most of my plots have at LEAST 5 lines on them with 5
regression curves) just to get to the one that they want.

how about using a key combination with the mouse like a ctrl-left-click to go
through the z-axis to get to the items you want or right-clicking to go through
z-axis items.

The tab method is sorely lacking. Just because there is "a" solution doesn't
mean it is a good one or one that will even be used.

I know that chart is actively being worked on for the 2.3 release and this
feature would be greatly appreciated.

After a trendline is created over the data which is then obscuring the original
line in a line graph it becomes impossible to change the properties of the line
data.

One cannot shut off the trendline either because the creation and selection of
the trendline are part of the line data information.

In short, if a trendline covers a data line and the user either wants to change
the data line properties or shut off the trendline, it becomes very difficult -
I couldn't figure it out.

Is there something I'm missing?

gang, as much as I'm frustrated with the developers taking so long (6-7 yrs on
the weakest point of Calc) here's what we can do,
1) Use the point system and give this problem points so that your voices are
heard by the metrics they use.
2) Try out http://graphics.openoffice.org/chart/chart.html - the coming new
charting utility which "promises" to help solve "some" of our problems.
Download it and install it and report the bugs BEFORE they get into 2.3
otherwise we'll all be back here again.

They ARE making progress even though it might take longer than we'd like.

gang, as much as I'm frustrated with the developers taking so long (6-7 yrs on
the weakest point of Calc) here's what we can do,
1) Use the point system and give this problem points so that your voices are
heard by the metrics they use.

It's more fundamental than that and has always been the problem when CS people
lose touch with what the clients are looking for.

I've made myself available on numerous occassions as a numerical methods person
(not a coder) and I haven't heard a single thing from a single coder asking for
any input. At this point, I don't care anymore.

I'm beginning to wonder that WHEN these features do appear whether or not
they'll actually be worth using based on a technical standpoint. If the coders
aren't working with people that know how to do numerical methods then what are
the odds that it'll even come out correctly - this is a SERIOUS problem with MS
Excel and very few scientists use the results from Excel in technical journals
because of it's deficiencies. A simple google search will show this.

sorry if I've made you upset but there is no reason that my post on

Tue Feb 10 11:00:30 -0700 2004

should be in the same Issue 366. That post was about regression analysis and
curve fitting and not error bars. The fact that they were lumped together
implies that they are the same thing when they are, in fact, not.

Please see that post again and re-read it as I DID offer to help. I am not a
great coder although I have coded in C, C++, Fortran, Pascal, and Basic but it
has been a while. I do know regression analysis and statistics. You let me
know what it is that you guys are lacking and if I can contribute then I will.

I agree 100% with Daniel - I've STOPPED promoting this package because it really
doesn't compare w/MS Office at all. Sure it has a few features that are really
great and even better than MS Office but as a whole, it is still a decade
behind. Now that 2007 is coming out, it'll fall even further behind.

I still believe that the original implementation was vastly superior - 1 desktop
that handles everything - and Sun made a mistake in wasting all those resources
in splitting up the packages and beautification when it could have gone to added
real features that were lacking. This clearly shows why Sun, as a company,
hasn't done well in decades. Having 2 people working on this is ridiculous.

to clarify your post on
"So may be I am allowed to rant, too. Why do you guys think when you get a
software for FREE and do NOTHING for it apart from ranting, that we should
listen to you. We will implement this feature, when we finished chart2 and have
the time for it. Period."

--> Well, I know that I feel that my time is very valuable and I want to
promote OO but when I waste considerable time on features that don't exist then
it costs me money, if time=money. The money that is spent isn't only the money
that is laid down for a package. I feel lied to when the promotions come out
talking about how great OO is and I waste my time to download it and promote it
only to find out little significant (to me) progress has been made. The fact
remains that people value their time and wasting it upsets me. My reputation is
on the line when I promote this package only to find out that there are still
missing features. I want to help and promote it but I won't do that anymore
because of the history of development and lack of features. So YEAH, I feel
justified in bitching about it because OO has cost me considerable time,
resources, and has affected my reputation with regards to this package. Not all
things are measured in greenbacks that have been pulled from one's wallet and
one could argue that the really important things aren't measured with greenbacks
at all.

BM, your efforts and the other person are greatly appreciated. My issue isn't
with you but the fact that Sun isn't allocating their resources effectively on
the issues that are critical.

Sun should take this example into consideration,
Buy MS OFfice for $100 (very easy to find price)- all features included and
provided
Person pays nothing for OO - cost $0 but spends at least 5 hours over the course
of 4 yrs finding ways to do things such as,
* creating good looking templates that already exist in MSO
* doing proper plotting
* productivity losses due to speed differences
* exporting filtering issues
* getting multimedia to play correctly in OOImpress (windows AND linux)
* figuring out how to get things done in OO vs MSO
At a cost of $20/hr (cheap, if you ask me) then the person would be better off
with MSO because they would have saved time and NOT been frustrated. Now,
consider that a 5 hr loss over 4 yrs is very conservative, I know that I've
wasted that in a few months on OOImpress. Consider that $20/hr is pretty cheap
her in the US and you'll see that OO has a very tough battle ahead of it. If
there is any wonder why people aren't using it, just point the Sun executives to
this example.
I would be better off using MSOffice both for reasons of frustration and lost
time/money. Based on this example, the only ones that would use OO are those
that just cannot afford to lay out MSO or those that want to promote it at the
expense of wasting their time (for whatever reason such as dislike of MSO and
wanting to see a true competitor); well, I know I fall into the latter camp
along with many of the posters here and we are walking away one after another
because eventually we realize that the shine on OO has lost its luster.
So unless Sun makes some changes real quickly then the ones that are using it
but can afford it are going to walk away if they haven't already. It just isn't
worth our time. Heck, I know that I'd even offer $$ if the package was anywhere
near MSO but it isn't and I'm not about to give money to a

Earth to OOCalc developers!

Please pick up a statistics book and look into the difference between regression
analysis and error bars - they are NOT THE SAME!

This has gone on long enough - 5 yrs and there still isn't someone at OO that
knows what the heck we're talking about. Please pick up a book and read up on
what it is we're looking for or to make life easier then go find a scientist
that uses MS Excel and just ask them to show you what it is we're talking about.

And I thought MS was slow...

I spend quite a bit of time going back and forth between the several different
versions that I have installed to confirm/deny issues that used to work but no
longer do.

Do you miss Marco too? :D

I'm glad to hear that there is a plan to improve the speeds but I do have 1
question. If StarDivision's code was also bloatware then why did it run SO much
faster than todays code? Granted, it might have been bloated (from a coder's
perspective) but it was good enough (from a user's perspective) and today's code
just isn't good enough from either perspective.

I'm not pissed at Sun but I wish that they left the product alone - as it ran
FAST - and just added features before tearing it all apart.
Just to be clear, the complaints aren't meant to be directed at the coders as I
know that you do what you are told but more so toward the philosophy and
direction which is clearly management's responsibility.

I'm sorry to hear about your working conditions - especially when you could be
watching the world cup in person and having a pint, LOL. Take care and take it
easy. The comments weren't directed at you but more the company's closed
philosophy and direction of the package. When I had the original packages, I
thought "wow, this is great - imagine if some money were put behind it" then Sun
bought it and I thought "OMG, this is going to kill MS Office" but alas there
haven't been many feature additions over 6 yrs and the program runs MUCH slower
than original so I feel like a deflated airbag and I don't have much, if any,
enthusiasm for a project that I strongly supported in the past. I realize that
this is out of your control. Keep up the good work and here's to hoping that OO
catches MS Office in the next 5 yrs. MS knows how to copy and many of the
features that used to be exclusive to OO are showing up in MS Off 2007.

Right, and that argument holds for Staroffice (not free) how.

It's amazing how coders have absolutely no business sense. It's about VALUE
which is why BMWs and Mercedes sell so well even though they are pricey vehicles
- people perceive them to be a value for their dollar.

Even free things have a value to them - just because it costs NOTHING doesn't
mean that it has infinite value.

At the price pt of $200 MS isn't a value compared to OO but at $55 it becomes a
much greater value. Now with MS Off. 2007 coming out it'll be a great value at
$75 and OO will be left in the dust with productivity, ease of use, and speed.

Free my eye - how much time do I spend finding your niggling bugs and reporting
problems. How is this FREE? I can attribute a value to a great many things and
back in 2000 Stardivision had a VALUABLE product and it only took Sun six years
to reduce that value (actually, they did it in 2).

Note:
1) Cheap or free does not mean infinite value
2) People ARE willing to pay for things so long as it has value
3) Sun has been steadily improving the "value" of OO after drastically reducing
the value of it after the purchase of Stardivision and it currently stands,
IMHO, as a net negative from when they purchased it - slower, buggier, less GUI
consistency.

I've probably been using this package for a LOT longer than you have been
working on it as I go back to the original StarDivision days and I KNOW what
they had for a product and I KNOW what you have. I also worked with them on
issues and NEVER had to deal with responses like yours even though I got it for
free.

I can get MS Office for close to nothing but I'm choosing to help OOo but thanks
to your replies - I'll reconsider.

Seriously, how can you call this a "feature" - it's a defect

from your site:
Defect is a problem with an existing feature that is either not developed to
spec or does not work as designed. These are often referred to as "bugs."

If it used to work quickly and no longer does then guess what? It's a defect.
I guess they made it work fast before by accident and your slowing it down now
makes it a valuable "feature".

And I love "OOo Later" which should be properly named "Whenever we feel like
getting to it" or "nicety but not really important" or "we really don't care"

I wouldn't be so pissed if I wasn't such an OO promoter but I'm starting to lean
heavily toward MS Office as you can get it for about $55 OEM and it works FAST
and has TONS more features.

I've attached an Impress document with various font sizes. Just click from one
font box to another and see how long it takes the font bar to update the font
size. It's a good 1/2 second - at least. This becomes a significant problem
for me when I'm creating presentations with different font sizes. Needless to
say, with a 2ghz Pentium M this should NOT be the case.
How is it that this couldn't be replicated on your own such that you needed an
example document? Sometimes I wonder if you guys even USE the product that you
are promoting. MS Office 95 was faster on a pentium. Please please please stop
with the bloatware. The original 5.2 version (when you bought Stardivision)
worked 10x faster than what you currently have - what have you been doing?
Makes me wonder if the Sun/MS agreements are working against us, LOL.

there is a significant lag of around .75-1 second of lag time when clicking on
one text box with one font size/type and another one. This makes editing fonts
very cumbersome as you have to wait for the text info to appear before you can
edit it. This slows down my productivity and makes me want to use another
program. I'm sitting behind a 2ghz centrino so I KNOW it isn't my PC (1gb of
RAM).
Can you improve the user experience by improving these tiems - it's ridiculous
that a presentation program 8 yrs ago on a machine of the same vintage had a
better user experience, with respect to responsiveness, than what is currently
offered by Impress. Please stop with the bloatware and streamline your code.

keeping an eye on your "progress".

You guys are making a mockery of open-source software. I understand finding and
fixing "bugs" that are hard to find but you guys are relying on the community to
find ANY and ALL bugs including things that extremely obvious like the showing
of icons. Way to go.
Based on the previous development cycle only 5 yrs to wait for something that
used to work to work again. You guys RoXoR!

The vertical text button does not appear, when selected, in the drawing toolbar.
I have the toolbar docked at the bottom of my page and when I try to enable all
the icons to be viewable the vertical text one flashes for a split second and
then disappears.

Good luck getting a reply from these yahoos of developers. They work on what
they want, when they want and they wouldn't know an essential piece of code if
it came and stomped on their head. I've given up and gone back to MSO. Maybe
in another 10 yrs we'll have the functionality that was common among
spreadsheets 15 yrs ago. Heck, I'd like the functions to work that worked 6 yrs
ago before Sun bought StarDivision. Those guys probably laughed all the way to
the bank when they were purchased but they have got to be shaking their heads at
what these rookies are doing with the package now.

After creating a chart and then highlighting the chart, the "edit data" option
is greyed out. You can't go back and modify the cells used to create the chart
using either the icon or the title bar menu system.

Seriously though, when are you guys going to focus on Calc. It is THE WEAKEST
part of the whole suite. What's the problem? Is it:
a) not enough people interested in fixing Calc
b) not enough people to even work on it
c) it is a low priority

Every single review I've seen shows that this is a sore spot for the OO Suite
and things that used to work 6 yrs ago in 5.2 don't work anymore. The charting
was supposed to be fixed in 2.0 and it is nowhere to be seen. I'm just
wondering what the deal is.

Good God, based on your replies I would guess your age to be less than 25 yrs
old. I can only hope someone of more responsibility looks at these things and
holds you accountable.

I'll give you the chance to have the final word, name 1 instance where MS
released such a product as complete.

For myself, I am NOT an MS hater or lover. I think their business tactics are
immoral but their products are pretty good.

Don't even BEGIN to compare Excel with OOCalc. Your other products ARE/WERE
pretty good. I'm not a coder but I HAVE offered my assistance to fix what I
consider to be BIG GAPING HOLES in your OOCalc and nobody took me up on it.
Just do a search for my bug reports.

So go ahead, have the last word and show me where MS released such a product as
a completed package

otherwise I'm done with you and can only hope someone else holds you responsible
for your juvenile comments.

Yeah, you are right MS would never fix it that fast but let's just ignore that
they wouldn't have released this as a beta either.

Look we can argue the points but this has been broken, fixed, broken, fixed,

Betas are to get a first impression, but I highly doubt things that are THIS
broken are called Betas. Heck, you guys are shunning the scientific community
with your regression analysis on Calc so that you can improve it for the SOHO
market and I understand that (sort of) but the SOHO market is going to use your
templates and THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN caught VERY early - even before the alpha
stage.

I've never seen a beta where one of the MAJOR features was broken. USUALLY, in
my experience, BETAS have minor bugs that get fixed and YES, I've used A LOT of
beta packages and have been part of many bug-fixing/BETA testing/quality control
teams.

In my honest opinion, if something this GLARINGLY OBVIOUS was missed then I
don't have much faith in the rest of the package.

I like to contribute to OOS software and I have YET to donate to OO and I guess
I should thank you guys for continuing to give me reasons for not doing so. Your
response is yet another reason along with your developers working on the WRONG
things and ignoring IMPORTANT issues. Keep prettying up the GUI and forget the
features, useability, and stability and see how many turn back to better
alternatives even if it means paying for it. You heard it hear first.

By the way, I've donated WAY more for OOS than I've spent on closed-source
software and THAT is saying a lot.

Follow the following steps to see if it is repeatable as it is repeatable for me
running in PCLinuxOS .81a

File->New->Presentation
>From Template
Next
Next
Click on ANY of the effects and OO should crash.

IF this is repeatable by anyone other then myself then I am SHOCKED and
TERRIFIED that this is considered a BETA. Good God, I think I'll take my
chances with MS.

These guys JUST DON'T GET IT!

No matter how many bugs/issues get filled about error/statistical
analysis/trending they continue to view these as "enhancements".

Get your heads out of your * and recognize that the scientific/financial
community is a sizeable portion of spreadsheet users and neither of them even
look at OOCalc because these features are missing.

I get it, you are programmers and don't need these things but you are providing
a product for your community and we are SCREAMING ABOUT THE LACK OF THIS
FEATURE. I have generously given funding to other OSS projects but REFUSE to
give anything to OO because of their ability to turn a deaf ear to this part of
the community. Look at issues 23909, 22740, 25277, 28458, 40578 and 366.

I for one would rather have these features than any performance boost or
prettying up of the interface.

OK, enough is ENOUGH! This issue needs another evaluation. It shouldn't be
under "graphics" and is DEFINITELY not an "enhancement". This

There are a whole slew of people that refuse to use this product because of the
lack of this functionality.

This is addressed to bm, cloph, joergwartenberg, and mmp. Whos IS it that you
report to? Surely everyone reports to someone else and there HAS to be someone
that can reevaluate whether this is an "enhancement" or a SERIOUSLY LACKING
FEATURE. I would like have you guys/girls reevaluate as to whether this is an
enhancement or not.

Maybe we need to educate you guys/girls on what is lacking as maybe you are
unaware as to how important these features are to ANYONE that has to ANY
statistical analysis. Children in High School are exposed to this using Excel
and almost every college student in ANY scientific field uses these features
REGULARLY.

For some, maybe spreadsheets are a way to tabulate data and run simple equations
but for the scientific community it is used for this and MUCH more when we need
to evaluate the data statistically. If these features cannot or WILL NOT be
added then you are FORCING us to continue to use Excel.

Who's attention do we have to get to have them take this more seriously?

To everyone else that finds this a problem then use your VOTES to escalate this
issue.

I for one agree that the "pretty" features and the database issues are moot
compared to this feature. I ask myself the following question all the time,
"who doesn't use the statistical features of a spreadsheet?" For this reason
alone I find it completely incomprehensible that these features are STILL not
there. This product will remain second-rate until these features are included.

So either you are not getting it or we aren't doing a better job explaining what
the problem is.
