This Issue requires more information ('needmoreinfo'), but has not been
updated
within the last year. Please re-test [...]

I don't think more info is needed. It seems to me that the developers are
aware of this issue and even know where the problem comes from. Anyway, I've
just tested OOo 2.4.0 and this bug is still present.

It's actually even worse: OpenOffice doesn't respect the minimum characters
setting at all!
Please have a look at the test file that I will attach shortly.
(BTW, I'm still using OpenOffice 2.0.2 on Kubuntu Dapper, so it would be nice
if anyone could confirm this issue with a 2.2.)

Unfortunately, avoiding nonsensical hyphenation is only possible by disabling
it completely, which in turn renders OpenOffice unusable for any type of
quality document.

Actually, by doesn't respect [...] at all I meant in the context of a word
with apostrophe. I wanted to point out that increasing the minimum number of
characters setting has no effect at all when there's an apostrophe and hence
that the proposed workaround isn't helping.

In another bug report I found a workaround that actually works!

Changing the character formatting of a word to language: none prevents its
hyphenation. At least for short words (as in my test document) this is a
usable workaround.

Anyway, the user shouldn't have to disable hyphenation for words with an
apostrophe.

[sw-issues] [Issue 57408] Add character formats Cap itals Small Caps Initials to context menu

First of all, I doubt that the developers are keen on reading pages and pages
of You should implement this and that, else we won't use OpenOffice and
lengthy explanations of what are small capitals. (But then, I'm not a
developer and can't say for sure...)

Concerning small capitals I propose the following workflow (and it's not even
a workaround since I consider this to be the correct way to use Writer):
You create a new style called Small Capitals (or even better law code
citation reflecting the real intention). This can easily be done with the
stylist (F11). Then all you need to mark something in small caps is to select
the phrase and double click on your newly created style.

Initial Case is similar to OpenOffice's Title Case setting. Unfortunately both
can't be activated at the same time, hence it would be necessary to hard
recode the text in Title Case (as is done by the uppercase and lowercase
context menu entries). Maybe a Title Case entry in the context menu would be
useful after all.

But anyway, I don't think this will solve your problem, since Title Case seems
not to be what you want because it's language agnostic. In your examples you
specifically show that a, on, to should still be lowercase. In my
opinion, such a title should always be typed with the correct capitalization.
Especially, since it's not something you decide about later. Even before
typing it, you already know if it must be the or The.

Then, with the correctly typed title, formatting it in small caps is only a
(double-)click away.

I hope that helps.

[sw-issues] [Issue 17169] Add automatic non breaking space before certain punctuation marks (for F rench)

not really the problem is that a normal space is not treated
the same as the punctuation mark by OOo; it is only a separator
and it cannot be replaced using automatic correction
But to implement this feature, there is no need to replace space characters. I
still don't get the difference you're trying to explain. With quotes, a single
non-space character is replaced by either «[nbsp] or [nbsp]». Here, the
situation is similar: a single non-space character (:;?!) should be replaced
by [nbsp]: or [nbsp]; or [nbsp]? or [nbsp]!.

(Of course, using non-breaking *thin*spaces would be even better.)

but maybe changing the behavior of OOo in regards to breaking
words would allow to treat « as a single token... I'll look
 at that.
Quote handling is already implemented and in my experience it works perfectly.

I will attach a test document so that you understand what this is all about.
There is no space before the ! That's the problem. Why should I type it
manually? I'm not doing it for the quotes, so why should I do it for ; : ? !
That doesn't make sense. Especially since it would be wrong, because this
space must be non-breaking!

(Well, currently I must insert a manual non-breaking space, but that's only a
workaround until OpenOffice takes care of this issue.)

 (1) OpenOffice.org autocorrect doesn't work for punctuation marks
 that are not preceded by whitespace (tabs and spaces);

*Wrong*, it *does* work for quotation marks.
example: Bonjour - « Bonjour »
The second quote *is not* preceded by whitespace, yet it's transformed.

I think I've finally understood where the confusion comes from:
What I and probably others want is an implementation similar to the quote
handling (FOURTH tab of the AutoCorrect dialog) and not one based on Replace
(FIRST tab of AutoCorrect dialog).
It is about custom code to handle this peculiarity in French typography. Just
like there are custom algorithms to handle quotes in different languages.
AutoCorrect is more than just a simple word replacement table.

Anyway, thanks for your patience and caring about this issue.

I've just tried language tool. It doesn't handle apostrophe's correctly if
they are replaced by typographical ones. (Something about a missing opening or
closing quote.)
Since I'm using Antidote for my correction purposes I disabled everything
except space handling and it's a nice workaround for the time being. Thanks.

Yes, it would be great if OpenOffice could edit PDFs just like Word documents.
But that would be overly complex. Indeed, what many of the commenters seem to
ignore is the fundamental difference between a page description language (PDF)
which lacks all of the structural information and a word processing document.

What is however realistic is using PDFs as *graphics*. This is a common practice
in the (pdf)LaTeX world. Apparently (I'm basing this on a comment on the scribus
bug tracker), PDF starting at version 1.4 allows for such a placement of PDFs in
a PDF. This would be useful in at least the following two ways:

* use PDF as a very complete and universally compatible (but non-modifiable)
vector graphics format. (It can easily be generated by any program and then
cropped to the right dimensions)

* use full page PDFs as background and modify the contents by overpainting or
adding comments, drawings, etc.

(Of course, this would probably entail the inclusion of a pdf rendering library
for printing and displaying.)

Maybe the original reporter could give more precise information on what
exactly should be implemented. As far as I can tell, the document outline is
well recreated in the PDF. As for links in the table of contents of the
document, they need to be created manually. (In my opinion these hyperlinks
should be created by default, but I'm not sure that's what the reporter
meant.)

I thought linked TOCs in PDF export had not yet been implemented, until a
google search showed me how to do it. Since one also has to work around the
hyperlink formatting issue (point (2) here and also issue 55611), it's
somewhat complicated to create a nicely structured PDF document.

This issue contributes to the difficulty of creating hyperlinked PDFs. (See
also issue 44938.)

Depending on the reporter's intention, it might be a duplicate of issue 44938
which proposes automatic creation of hyperlinked tables of contents.

I assume that in most cases a space between the numbering and the title is
wanted. So couldn't this issue be trivially solved by modifying OpenOffice's
default behaviour when creating outline numbering and TOCs? (E.g. After
should be prefilled with a space character) At least it would be an excellent
intermediary solution without any compatibility issues.

Please consider this for 2.3 or even 2.2.x.

In fact, the bug exposed by my test document is issue 62907! As soon as I
change the character style from default to some other style (e.g. definition),
the links are correctly exported. (I'll attach the modified test document.)

What would be the advantages? If I recall correctly, PDFCreator is nothing
more than a virtual printer. PDF export by way of PDFCreator should actually
*lose* a lot of information (links, metainformation) or am I wrong? In my
opininon PDFCreator is a nice program, but in the context of OpenOffice it's
only useful as a last resort when you happen to stumble upon a PDF export bug
in OOo.

So please consider closing this issue.

Oops, I forgot to upload my modified document. But I don't think that it is
any longer necessary, since it doesn't seem to be the section level that
breaks PDF links but the character style used to display the entry (LS in
the Index/Table dialog) seems to be the culprit. And that's actually issue
62907. In other words, I no longer request this issue to be reopened. Thanks
anyway.

(If I change the character style of LS in your modified document
to default, the link still works in OpenOffice but is absent in the PDF.)

I can only concur that using straight quotes for measurements is incorrect! As
has been pointed out by jes, the correct replacement would be U+2032 and
U+2033.

What about extending the normal quote rules by the following rules?
In normal text:
1) number' - number[prime]
2) number - number[double prime]
3) number[prime]number - number[prime]number[double prime]
With quotes:
4) 'text number' - autoreplace ' by single quotes
4a) followed immediately by a second number?
  - go back and replace closing quote by prime, leave quotes open
4b) followed immediately by another single quote?
  - go back and replace first quote by prime, close quotes
5) text number' - replace ' by prime, leave quotes open
6) text number - replace by double quotes
6a) immediately followed by another number?
  - go back and replace closing quotes by double prime, leave quotes open
6b) immediately followed by ?
  - go back and change closing quotes to double prime and second quotes to
real closing quotes

Of course, this should be activated separately by a third AutoCorrect option
group Prime replacement. (Not all fonts have primes and double primes.)

As for the feasability of such a replacement, that's up to the developers ;-)
But it would be a nice typographic improvement.

Any progress on this issue? I sometimes forget about it, which leads to broken
files (because of the missing images).
IMO the default action should always be the safe one, e.g. including instead
of linking.

Thanks anyway, OOo is great.
