The dialogue 'JRE is Defective' simply steers the user
(on Mac OS X, wrongly; that's issue 115439).

By keying
command-,
for Preferences…, the Options dialogue appears.

= Suggestion for improvement =

Instead of an 'OK' button in the 'JRE is Defective' dialogue
(being defective is *not* OK ;)
there could be a button that opens the Preferences… (Options) dialogue. Ideally
with the Java pane
selected.

Issue reproduced in:

OOo-dev 3.3.0
OOO330m3 (Build:9519) on the same computer

OOo 3.2.1 On a different computer

— in both cases, OOo finds no Java (emptiness in the Options dialogue) but

See the first two attachment to issue 76385.

'Tools - Options' does not exist.

The true steering should be:

1. OpenOffice.org menu
2. Preferences…
3. OpenOffice.org
4. Java

Correction, not quite impossible; a single click on the Help menu causes the
'JRE is Defective' dialogue to
appear nine times. Following the ninth click, the Help menu presents.

> The Tools menu does **not** offer 'Options'

On Mac OS X, the Help menu should show the true location of 'Options'.

However: the combination of this issue 76385 and issue 115438 make it
impossible to use the Help menu;
any click on the word 'Help' causes the 'JRE is Defective' dialogue to
reappear, requiring the user to move
the mouse **away** from the Help menu.

Issue 95975 opened 2008-11-07 is:

> Check for update failure

@ developers

Should 95975 be treated as a duplicate of this issue 94174 and if so, should we
change the platform and
OS of this issue?

sometimes bugging Mac OS X,
confirmed by votes 2009-10-28,
then in that issue, users of Windows XP reported the same problem.

FWIW I sometimes sense that an error is more likely if the manual check is made
soon after launching OOo.

I wonder: what happens if a manual check (with a GUI) coincides with an
automated check (which probably
presents no GUI unless an update is available)?

I'm reminded of another bug relating to update errors …

Sorry for the late reply on this.

I'm not using OOo often, but it's a long time since I've seen any crash.

Command clicking from the submission gateway to

OK, I just noticed

> Sort by: Oldest first | Newest first

However: I would never knowingly click on that (I hate newest first), so
either:

a) I clicked it without realising

or

b) my preference was somehow lost or changed.

I'm tempted to resolve this again, worksforme, but I'll leave it open just in
case it's a sign of something
unexpected happening to user preferences on the server side.

Possibly a duplicate of issue 102024 but in 102024, I don't recall a document
recovery dialogue.

This crash occurred on a different computer.

I wonder, is the crash more likely if a manual check for updates to extensions
coincides with an automated
check?

In the third screen shot (to follow) I note that OOo finds updates to
extensions automatically.

Screen shot
<http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/61606/101133.png>
(borrowed from issue 101133) shows that the OOo expression is

> Select to Word Right

I wonder whether OOo tradition differs from the Apple guidelines. Users of Mac
OS X expect the selection
to reach the end of a word (to *not* extend into trailing white space).

Example:
Shift–Option–Right Arrow
(shift-alt-right)
is properly accelerating

> To the end of the current word, then to the end of the next word

but the Customize dialogue suggests that the modifier keys are shift + Apple.

Re issue 4756, maybe the dialogue will show the true modifiers when I work with
a version of OOo that
includes mba32issues01.

Screen shot to follow.

Previously using OOO310m7 with various extensions.

Today I put in its place OOO310m8.

When the application launches, the familiar icon appears in the menu bar,
prompting me to update
extensions, but clicking on the icon has no effect.

Similarly, if I take the Tools menu route to Extension Manager, nothing happens.

Amongst the references from
http://n2.nabble.com/-tp2228335p2275867.html —

> Mac OS X Developer Release Notes:
> Cocoa Application Framework (10.4 and Earlier)

It's a long document, so if you wish
http://www.diigo.com/04rfg to view selected highlights (click the Comments
button to reveal the
dialogue that jumps to highlights).

Those Apple notes may not be most up-to-date but they do introduce the notions
of two bindings:

F5
option-escape (also known as alt-escape)

http://n2.nabble.com/-tp2228335p2283247.html observes:

> in Numbers, alt-escape
>
> • does not present the menu
> • does clear all text from the cell

— so we should not rush to bind
alt-escape

(I wonder why Apple have chosen an alternative meaning of alt-escape in
Numbers.)

I assume that text completion of the type illustrated at
http://n2.nabble.com/file/n2283247/alt-escape.png will not be possible in the
near future but I'm
noting this enhancement — for a to-be-associated shortcut — sooner rather than
later.

> In tables, the alt-arrow combination should change the table row

> implementation.

To clarify, on Mac OS X:

* neither alt-up nor alt-down should change the row height

* alt-up and alt-down should move the cursor

* when a blank line exists between multiple paragraphs, the point to which the
cursor *should* move is
(comparing Apple applications with Apple Guidelines) not 100% clear.

Summary line of this issue is edited accordingly:

> alt-up and alt-down movement of insertion point within table:
> review (subject to Apple guidelines)

Separate issue 98956 concerns the row height issue.

[framework-issues] [Issue 98988] OpenOffice.org safe mode — for a more reliable Extension Manager

> a complex problem

My primary motive (motives of others may vary) is to be able to disable and/or
uninstall any extension.

In the example given I found myself unable to use the Manager for a particular
extension.

> checking the health of extensions costs perfomance.

Taking responsibility for the consequences of installing any exension, assuming
imperfection of an
extension, my main wish would be to disable or uninstall.

I would treat health checking by OOo as a separate enhancement. Checks would be
nice to have, but
less important than the ability to uninstall.

> It might also a solution to disable the extension that causes
> trouble.

Might that be less or more complex than a safe mode that (temporarily) disables
all extensions, to
allow uninstallation of any one extension?

Thanks for comments/consideration.

Original.

Note: three mounts for a single AFP volume, presumably a result of the
interruptions to
Internet/network/Internet access before and during restart of my wireless
router.

-n numbered mounts indicate that the preceding mounts were not cleanly
unmounted.

1. launch OOo-dev

2. observe good positioning of the non-document window

3. command-N

4. observe less than ideal positioning of the document window.

= Comparison =

Apple Pages sets a fairly good example.

I'll attach screen shots.

http://www.diigo.com/04s2p includes highlights from Apple HIG. Note that the
Guidelines are not
entirely clear, and that some current applications (including but not limited
to Apple TextEdit 1.5 (244))
contradict the Guidelines, or vice versa. I have provided early feedback to
Apple (using the option at the
foot of their page); additional feedback to Apple should be welcomed.

1. As an administrator of Mac OS X 10.5.x:
System Preferences… | Accounts | Guest Account |
[√] Allow guests to log into this computer

— comparable to kiosk mode

Thereafter, each guest who logs in to Mac OS X should be able to use
OpenOffice.org quickly, and
without interruption.

OOo-dev requires four steps, at least one of which is inappropriate for
unprivileged users.

= Suggestions for improvement =

Start centre should appear without interruption.

Personal information _should not_ be required for read only actions (e.g.
reading a document that is
attached to an e-mail).

Personal information may be invited if/when the user edits something.

OOo _should not_ encourage the guest to check for updates (should not encourage
running of any
application that was not pre-installed by the administrator of the computer).

An invitation to register may be appropriate at quit, but not at launch.
(First: please the guest, without
interruption; invite registration only from users who are pleased.)

Arrange in Front. Brings forward all of the application’s windows in their
current layering order and
changes their location and size so they are neatly tiled.
