[sc-issues] [Issue 32344] Simple wildcards * and ? a s opposed to regular expressions

I was working with an xls file and discovered this problem. From a users
perspective, wouldn't it be simpler to simply have a message stating that OOo
is trying to open a file that contains regular expressions/wild cards and asks
whether the user wants to enable the regular expression option?

i'm not sure about more complex formulas but it seems that there is no problem
with OOo understanding and translating into excel's way of handling things, so
long as the option is turned on. i would think therefore that simply letting
the user know that the option has to be turned on because there are regular
expressions in the formula would be good enough, so that the user doesn't get
shocked to see all zeros in the cells as I did. I mean if there isn't any
technical problem as regards OOo translating and understanding the way other
spreadsheet applications handle formulas (OOo can open and save either way),
then there's really no need to replace and auto translate formulas. if all the
user needs to do to work with the spreadsheet (whichever format) and to save it
(in whichever format as well) is to turn the option on or off, then so be it. a
simple prompt like:

The spreadsheet file you are trying to open may contain regular expression. Do
you want to turn these feature on?

or something...

just an update. i've tried a lot of combinations and the only persistent
problem as regards OOo being able to continue previous numbering is when
bullets are inserted. that's when the entry in the context menu disappears.

i've tried inserting un-numbered paragraphs, numbered lists of different
levels, sections, image from files.. and even so, the continue previous
numbering option in the context menu is available.

the solution it seems is to make the context menu entry available after
inserting a bulleted list.

can this be confirmed?

i've tried different combinations, but it seems that the only persistent
problem with OOo (2.4 and 3.0 on XP) as regards continuing previous numbered
list is when it's preceded by a bulleted entry.

i've tried inserting blank para's, different level numbered lists, sections,
image files, etc... after a numbered entry, but continuing works fine. it is
still present in the context menu.

it seems that the solution lies on making the context menu entry available
after entering a bulleted list.

can this be confirmed already?

I agree. That does make sense. However, as mod mentioned, i believe i brought
this up in discuss ux as well, it is possible to delete an existing note while
the notes pane in not in view. there is a risk of accidentally deleting notes
therefore.

With this scheme, users who deal with a lot of notes are also forced to do the
editing with the notes pane in view, which can become quite crowded when there
are a lot of notes on a single page. If they do otherwise, they run the risk of
accidentally deleting notes as mentioned above.

In that case, how notes are being handled in 2.4 is much more safer than in the
beta, as fas as visibility [?] is concerned.

is it possible to just include the yellow rectangle in the next version at
least until a better option comes up? i think simply changing the shape would
do a lot, in terms of UI.

sorry i lost the comments..

TL i understand now that the issue is not with the spell checker. should the
subcomponent be changed?

not sure if this is a genuine bug, but one might naturally expect to be able to
set a language as default for documents if that user can use it to check the
spelling of documents.

this still persists in beta. should a different issue be filed?

regarding the notes panel, it is possible to delete a note from the document
when the notes pane is not present. Therefore, this could cause users to
accidentally delete notes, if there isn't a marker present in the document when
the notes pane is out of view... i must be missing the little rectangular
yellow boxes... lol

in 3.0 beta, there is an option to hide/show the notes pane. when not in view,
there is no marker on the document to represent the location of inserted notes,
if there are any. While it was designed that documents with notes are to be
opened with the notes panel in view, users might want to edit the document
without the notes pane, and accidentally delete the notes. it seems better to
have a marker similar to the little yellow rectangles in previous versions to
indicate where exactly in the document notes are found - of course, we can the
little rectangular boxes into something else... lol

any development on this issue?

i've been using MS again in the office and noticed how they were able to capture
what i think is a good solution to this. i MS, when a numbered list is inserted,
a small icon appears allowing users to either restart numbering or continue the
previous numbered list.

i think this would be a good solution to this issue, such that:

1. user creates a numbered (1.) entry on level 1
2. user creates a bulleted entry and/or unnumbered entry
3. user continues numbered list (presses F12 on level 1), but OOo asks whether
the user wants to continue the previous numbered entry OR restart the numbering.

like i mentioned in the previous entry, this is possible by using a numbering
style. When a numbering style is used, the numbered list continues from where it
was left. As i said, i assigned the hotkey Shift+Ctrl+F12 to Numbered list 1. So
if the last numbered entry on level 1 is at 4. and the last numbered entry on
level 2 is at 7., pressing the hotkey at level 1 inserts a numbered entry
beginning at 5., and 8. when pressed on level 2, and so on. this is
effective even if bullets and unnumbered entries are inserted between numbered
lists.

the quickest solution that makes sense to me is to assign a numbering style by
default when pressing F12 (which is Numbering On/Off). By the way, when pressing
F12, what numbering style does it use? if it does anyway. one problem i
encountered though is that pressing the hotkey on level 2, takes you back to
level 1, but it still continue the previous numbered list. so you'd have to
press TAB to start a new numbered list on level 2... it does not however, fail
to continue a previous numbered list, once a style is used.

I also agree that this should be made availble (doesn't matter under which
classification... lol) as soon as possible.

I believe the point of end users here is the fact the if you for example, had
100 slides or more in a presentation, where each slide contains 10 bullet
points, you would have to select and modify each slide manually to apply a
custom animation. that would mean an average of 5 clicks per slide x 100 slides,
just to apply a simple animation (for bullet entries to apply per paragraph or
one-by-one for example). this would be very tedious and impractical especially
for an end user who frequently makes presentations with a lot of slides.

I also know that this feature is available in PPT, which OOo should seriously
adopt in the nearest future because it is indeed a problem for users. I am not
sure how to go about this, but the point here is to allow users to apply custom
animations to all slides, similar to the Apply to all slides of slide
transitions.

here are links to two of the thread I found from the forums regarding this
problem, from where I hope the developers can pick up:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=270568#270568

i have been discussing this issue in the forums, supposedly for OOo 2.2.1 in
both ubuntu 7.04 and xp, but it took sometime. however, the problem still
persists in OOo 2.3 XP. the thread is found here:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=61935highlight=

the problem is with bullets following a numbered list. whenever there are nested
bullets within a numbered list, the bullets encounter problems, specifically:

1. first bullet after a number will not change it's bullet type automatically
when pressing tab
2. the second bullet will attach itself to the first one, when it is moved one
level to the left of the previous bullet.

how to replicate:
1. insert number (F12)
2. type text, press enter
3. press tab to move one level to the right; type text and press enter
4. press shiftF12 to change number into bullet - notice here that when
moving the bullet into different levels (tab or shifttab), the bullet type
doesn't change it's appearance

5. type text and press enter to insert another bulleted line on the same level
- this time, the bullet type will change when moving the bullet to levels going
to the right
6. bring second bulleted line one level to the left of the first bullet
(shifttab) - it should change bullet type
7. now press tab - see that the above bullet (bullet 1) will also move along
with bullet 2... whichever way you go (to the right or to the left)

in our discussion, i am told that i am going against the nature of how OOo
handles lists. such that a numbered list should IDEALLY not be on the same level
as a bulleted list, supposedly causing the irregularities.

the problem with this type of handling is that it is assumed that users will
only have numbered lists on any given level. but what if say, the numbered list
has ended, and users want to add bulleted lists on level 1, indicating that it
is not a sublevel or part of the last numbered entry, but a bulleted entry in
its own right.

a workaround given is to format your bullets and numbered list in such a way
that they do not reside on the same level, which i think makes sense for better
formatting and layout, but sacrifices flexibility and user control over lists.
in addition to this, the problem of the bullets attaching themselves to each
other would still be present, regardless of level. the problem is with bullets
coming after numbered lists, not their level.

i'm not sure whether this would be considered a bug, or users not having the
right idea how bullets and numbers should be placed, formatted or handled in
documents - but who determines what? isn't it the users and not the application?

please check the link to the thread which also includes screenshots with
discussions, plus a sample document.

thanks!

[sw-issues] [Issue 81739] problem with bullets follo wing a numbered entry/list

i'm not sure i understand the technical aspects of this but i think it should be
that the style of the previous numbered list should be preserved.

1. pressing Shift-F12 changes second level into bullet type.
2. type text and insert other bulleted entries
3. pressing F12 on second level changes bulleted list into number AND continues
the previous numbered list on that level, so that it takes off from where the
numbered list was left - unless user restarts numbering.

i think it is also intuitive that this scheme be applied to all default
numbering styles on all levels. that is, to continue the numbered list until it
is restarted. right now, i do this by creating my own list style and assigning
it a hotkey (ctrl+shift+F12). that way, i can have a list, type anything in
between, and pressing the hotkey continues my numbered list given that i am
still on the same level.

the only problem it seems is that the dictionary, even when installed (.aff
and .dic in proper folder) and the dictionary.lst file edited, isn't listed
within OOo (not available in drop down lists).

1. i had the tl_PH.aff and tl_PH.dic unzipped/copied to windowsxppath/ooo/.
using dicooo results in error (bad zip file)
2. i edited dictionary.lst, choosing a language i don't use and editing it so
that it looks like this:

DICT en GB tl_PH

this assigns tl_PH.dic to english(UK). it will work well, except for the fact
that the dictionary is recognized by OOo as english(UK) and not Tagalog
(Philippines). no problems after this whatsoever, and it works in both ubuntu
7.04 OOo 2.2 and winxpsp2 OOo 2.3.

***this works with whatever language you choose, i just chose this because it's
***one step above english(US) which i still use for default - makes it easier
***to choose default language for documents.

see this post in the forums:

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?
t=61604postdays=0postorder=ascstart=0

we had, and are still having a lengthy discussion about it.

i should note that in 2.3, Tagalog is listed in the spell checker drop down
list (pressing F7 on a document Dictionary Language), but it is NOT present
in toolsoptionslanguage settingslanguagesdefault for documents (this is
also included in page 3 of the post in the forum) because of this, i have these
two entries in dictionary.lst:

DICT tl PH tl_PH (allows tl_PH to be present within spell checker)

...as well as...

DICT en GB tl_PH (allows me to set it as default for tagalog documents)

i haven't posted a bug report. not sure if the latter issue should be part of
this (i thought it to be part of 76233). will update with the issue number
after i do so.

i'm not sure whether this would be a duplicate of 76233 or 75782

after installing tl_PH and adding:

DICT tl PH tl_PH

to the dictionary.lst, the tagalog dictionary is still not present in:

toolsoptionslanguage settingslanguagesdefault language for documents

to workaround this problem, i still use the old trick of assigning a language i
don't use to the tl_PH.dic file, as in:

DICT en GB tl_PH

so that choosing english(UK) as the default language will allow me to spell
check tagalog written documents.

as of OOo 2.3 on winxp, tagalog is already present from within the spell
checker, which is i think, what issue 76233 was referring to... but it left out
the above problem (i think)

please refer to our discussion in the forum for more details (and screenshots!)

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=61604postdays=0postorder=ascstart=0

i have also posted in the above mentioned issues. please check them. thanks.

i'm currently using the tagalog dic. but you have to reference it with a
different language that is listed. so your dictionary.lst should look something
like:

DICT en GB tl_PH

this assigns the english UK to use the tl_PH.dic

as an end user, i think it's pretty good.
things i found to be impressive:
- color-coded scheme for different authors
- scroll bars
- formatting and spell checking
- (if i got this right) notes adjusting their position in case they overlap in
the pane. great work!

some additional pointers:
- maybe a fade effect on the color of the notes would add for good user
experience

-rounded edges of course

- fine broken lines to separate the author and date from the actual note content
maybe? just to give them a section-type effect. the scroll bar looks
incomplete because one looks at the author and date as part of the note
itself, and it looks/feels like the scroll bars didn't extent the entire note.

- NEW - an option to have them displayed on top of the document itself maybe?
like post it's sticked on paper, in it's exact position, such that they all
appear on top of the document? and then an option to view them on the side pane
of course (animated and all-at-once movement maybe?) when user wants to work
with the document already. just thought it would be a nice user experience also.
i have this widget (forget me not) from yahoo that has a little transparent
tape-like thing on top of the post it. i think it would look nice to have the
notes look like actual post it's placed on paper (the document), including the
tape (well post it's don't have tape, but i think it would look good though).
also it would be an original OOo feature.

- the flash for the connecting lines are nice also, but i'm not sure it would be
nice to have them constantly moving like neon night lights in vegas or bars
though. maybe it could be done in such a way that they become animated only when
the user is finished writing on/to the notes, or while the user is typing. it
might be considered a bit of an annoyance to have them flashing all the time. :)

- export to PDF i think shouldn't be missed

that's all i can think of as of now. i hope it adds to the brainstorming of how
to improve notes. to add, it's good that OOo is coming with it's own rendition
of notes (comment/annotations). i think it far exceeds the others also.

i checked in just to see whether this would be implemented along with the PDF
import capability targeted at v.3.0. but i saw that the target is with version
2.4. cool. i hope they get this working. if i knew how to program, i'd help
myself.

i didn't read through the entire discussion again, but i hope that they do fix
all the suggested enhancements and fixes regarding notes.

1. word wrap
2. change cursor into arrow pointer or something
3. a pop-up balloon when hovering over the cute little yellow boxes

[sw-issues] [Issue 54195] Compare Document does not compare only differences

I also found this problem, which I do think should be considered a bug, since
it defeats the whole purpose of being able to compare documents. What use
would it be if the changes are not being recognized precisely by the function?

I also want to comment on the way the compare document function interacts with
the user. When you use the filtering option and choose to see only deletions,
for example, the insertions still remain underlined and color-coded. If you
only want to see what is not in doc1 (original), that is in doc2 (edited), then
that would be quite confusing. What I think should be considered is allowing
the filters to determine which would be identified in the document. So when
only deletions are selected in the filtering, insertions should not be
emphasied.

Of course this is just something that I thought would make it better, and is
also something that people would be able to adjust to of course - in case it
was not taken as an improvement. The real issue is the former of course, which
needs to be addressed already. It's 2007 now!

I cannot really compare with how the MS function works, because I never did get
the chance to use it when I was still in MS.

inside to expand...) in the Navigator window for the Headings section in my
version of OOo (2.2.1) in XP. I saw it in my Ubuntu 7.04 just today.

I agree that this should already be implemented in the next version. I was
surprised to see the discussion dated way back 2003.

I was intended on reporting the word wrap function in Writer Notes, but also
came across issues about notes being printed on the side of the document. I
experienced this actually when I printed a document made in OOo in Word. I
thought all along that it was possible when printing directly from OOo. It does
make for a sound enhancement as notes should be visible in the print out (for it
to read, otherwise it would be rendered useless), but not part of the text in
the document itself.

It would also be a good feature to have them appear as callouts (to appear as
'speech ballons'[?]) when the pointer hovers above. While functionality can be
obtained by simply double-clicking on the yellow box to view the note, it's good
aesthetically - otherwise, OOo might be left behind in the aesthetics
department, which is undeniably one aspect that attracts the average user.
Although I do think aesthetics should be well balanced, as it could lead to the
suite being bloated (don't know really - i'm no programmer), it should always be
considered in an application - to appeal to the senses.

We seriously have to get this going in the next release!

I understand that using templateedit would work well. This would be fine if a
user intends on editing a custom template in the first place. But in real-life
situations, users sometimes realize that they want to, or have to, make changes
to a particular template while working on it.

In OOo 2.2.1 on XP SP2, when your custom template is set as default, and
modifications are done to that template, after saving, the user has to go back
to the template organizer and tell OOo to set that template as default again.
Not doing so will cause the error message: /pathfile_name.ott does not exist.
Afterwards, OOo Writer will load the factory default template which of course
does not have all the styles and formatting specified by user.

Although the problem is quickly fixed by going back to the organizer, shouldn't
it be that OOo would still recognize the template and not say that it does not
exist because it does exist, it's just been modified. Have not tried this on my
linux machine, nor on other OOo applications (Draw, Impress, etc...).

1. create a new text document, set your preferred styles and formatting
settings;
2. save as template: filetemplatessaveMy Template.ott;
3. set it as default template in organizer
4. close and discard untitled;
5. open new text document, template will appear;
6. make changes to styles formatting of template (i.e. change font-family of
heading, margins, etc...);
7. save changes to template (overwrite existing template): filetemplatessave;
8. close untitled text document, discard changes;
9. now try opening a new text document, it should say that the template

click ok, and the factory template will load, which should not have been the

[sw-issues] [Issue 10384] filter to import pdf files

--- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Apr 29 16:08:46 +
2007 ---
Hello,
I'm no programmer so pardon me.
I think that the issue with PDF's in OpenOffice has been made complicated by
the technical aspects... I think what end-users only want is to be able to
read/view PDF's with a program associated with OpenOffice - I guess that would
suffice.

From the previous comments, it seems to me that integrating a program to
view/edit PDF's is not congruent with how OO was written, coming from a
programmers perspective. I guess that means there is a problem with having an
interoperability between the proposed PDF viewer/editor and Writer, for
example, in a way similar to the interoperability of Writer and Impress.

I mentioned above that association is the only need... to put it simply,
imagine renaming Adobe Acrobat Reader into something like OpenOffice Portable
and include it in the download and installation of OpenOffice, to be used as an
application within the suite to view/annotate/highlight/whatever (as opposed
to editing) PDF's, but not necessarily written to interoperate with like
Writer, Impress, and Draw do.

If I understood it correctly, what is feasible is being able to import/convert
PDF's into Writer editable format (odt, doc, etc..). That's when the
interoperability would come in - when a user wants to edit/modify (different
from simply making highlights, comments, etc...) the PDF document.

But as far as Adobe Acrobat Reader functionality is concerned, I do not see
how it would be impossible for developers to create an application that is
associated with OpenOffice that would allow users to view/annotate PDF's like
how they do with Adobe, Foxit, etc...

Am I coming across?
