What happend? Issue 114933 explains that a deadlock can potentially occur when some code uses the XCommandEnvironment to notify the user. The extension manager receives an XCommandEnvironment which it passes in calls to underlying code. That code does not know if the extension manager has locked the mutex. Therefore the extension manager only passes the XCommandEnvironment (here in addExtension) when its mutex is not locked. The additional messages displayed when using the --verbose switch are produced by code that received an XCommandEnvironment an which calls functions on that interfaces. Now it does not receive this object anymore, because this could produce a deadlock. It can therefore not produce the notifications, seen in the verbose mode. How to detect an error? If an error occurs, then the code will produce exceptions which are independent of the message displayed in verbose mode. There will still be an error notification on the console. The additional “success messages” in the verbose mode are actually not necessary. Ideas for a fix If the extension manager calls within a guarded section code that takes an XCommandEnvironment then it should provide an own implementation which records the calls. When the guarded section was left, then the recorded calls are forwarded to the original. This does not work with the XInteractionHandler which one gets from the XCommandEnvironment, because it is designed for synchronous interactions. The notifications on the console will also appear delayed and all at once. Another idea is to invent a XAsyncProgressHandler which is passed to functions of XExtensionManager. The function implementations of that interface must return immediately. That is they must dispatch the notifications to a different thread. It is used to obtain a XInteractionHandler of which the function handle is called if necessary. XInteractionHandler::handle is provided by the caller of the extension manager function. handle may not only be called from the extension manager itself but also from other APIs to which the XCommandEnvironment is passed. This is done, for example, when calling ucb functions. XInteractionHandler::handle can show dialogs, which require the solar mutex to be locked. In many cases the thread that calls the handle function has already acquired the extension manager mutex, so that this thread owns both mutexes. If at this point another thread calls an extension manager function then it will block when trying to acquire the extension manager mutex. It will only continue if the first thread has completed the interaction and has eventually released the extension manager mutex. The problem arises if the second thread already owns the solar mutex before it acquires the extension manager mutex. It will then be blocked by the extension manager mutex which is held by the first thread. The first thread cannot acquire the solar mutex in XExtensionManager::handle which is held by the second thread. One can get in this situation when both threads already own the mutex which will be later acquired by the other thread. For example, thread one acquires the extension manager mutex while thread two acquires the solar mutex. At this point, everything is fine until thread one (holding the extension manger mutex) tries to acquire the solar mutex. It will then block and will therefore not release the extension manager mutex. So whenever thread two (holding the solar mutex) calls an extension manager function which acquires the extension manager mutex then it will also block, because it it is held by thread one. The usual solution would be to make sure that both threads acquire the the mutexes in the same order. That is the extension manager could acquire the solar mutex before acquiring its own mutex. However, the solar mutex is not a usual mutex, because it may be released at different points in code. This may be OK for VCL but makes it unusable for all other parts of the code. In the current case this caused the deadlock: A worker thread is adding an extension and acquires the extension manager mutex. The extension manager calls XInteractionHanlder::handle, which acquires the solar mutex and then shows a dialog by calling Execute. Execute releases the solar mutex and allows the main thread to dispatch events. This triggered a vcl timer running in the main thread. This thread owns the solar mutex and calls a function of the extension manager. This function blocks because the extension manager mutex is held by the worker thread. The Dialog.Execute function will then acquire again the solar mutex, which is not possible because it is being held by the blocked main thread. As a result, the worker thread blocks as well and cannot release the extension manager mutex which is needed by the main thread. In this case the reason for the exception is that the extension manager database contains an entry for a shared extension which was removed. The data base was not synchronized with the actually installed extensions. This is done at start up and depends on the modification time of the folders containing the shared and bundled extensions and the lastsynchronized file (user/extensions/shared, user/extensions/bundled). In this case the user data from a different office was used where the data base contained an entry for an extension which does not exist in the current installation. It also contained a lastsynchronized file with a mtime older than that of shared extension folder. Therefore OOo did not recognize at startup that it must synchronize the shared extension repository. The problem may also occur when the user data are on a nfs volume and the nfs server and client are out of sync regarding there system time (this is actually a network maintainance issue). Then the modification time of the extension folder may appear older than that of the lastsynchronized file, although it is not actually . Then the synchronization would also not take place. The exception occurs in the function PackageManagerImpl::getDeployedPackage_ when m_xRegistry-bindPackage is called. Otherwise one could never make use of file attributes such as ctime and mtime. The application should however behave gracefully if the time values are far off the expectation. The worst which can happen to the users office is that new bundled and share extensions are not recognized or there are remnants (for example menu entries, help) of removed extensions. This can be checked by calling date on the machine where setup is to be run, then touch a file on the NFS volume and and call ls --full-time on that file (from the same machine). If the time of the file is more advanced then this is the scenario where the installation hangs. During the installation of OOo unopkg is run as part of the package installation which needs to determine a java. The infos about that java are stored in basis/share/config/javasettingsunopkginstall.xml. If the next rpm containing an extensions is installed, then this file is used instead of searchin for a Java again. This file has an expire - time. When this time is reached and a rpm is installed, then the settings are disregarded and a Java is searched again.
