Not invalid, just that there is something different between mechtilde's system
and mine. I have Debian testing installed without packages from any other
sources on several computers, they all display this problem.

By the way, I find that I cannot now load backup files either unless I change
the extension from .bak.

How can I go about diagnosing this further? How is OpenOffice supposed to
determine the type of file?

This first came to my attention because I use OpenOffice examine and compare
.config files. I would use the OpenOffice open dialogue, navigate to
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.30, type in the File name: .config (because hidden
files are not shown in the dialogue) and it would open (with the usual dialogue
about ASCII Filter Options). Now this does not work unless I make a copy of the
file and rename it with a .txt extension.

To reproduce:
Paste some text into a new page using Gedit and save it as a plain text file
called Open bug test.
In OpenOffice, navigate to the file using the Fileopen dialogue, click on the
file name, click on open and all that happens is that the dialogue disappears.
Or, find the file using Nautilus, right click on the file name, left click on
Open with OpenOffice.org Writer and all that happens is that the open dialogue
disappears.
Save a copy of the file as Open bug test.txt, either of the above actions
opens the file with a difference that opening the file from Nautilus brings up
the ASCII Filter Options dialogue, which does not happen using the OpenOffice
Fileopen dialogue.
Having now opened the file in OpenOffice.org writer, save it in ODF format as
Open bug test2.odt. It can be opened normally using either method.
Using Natilus, save a copy of this file and rename it Open bug test2.
OpenOffice will not now open it, in exactly the same way as with Open bug
test.

I use Debian testing. I would not want to use anything from another source.
However, it would appear that OOo 3.1.1 should be arriving in testing in the not
too distant future, so I will see what happens then.
Not that it is clear from the release notes that this should have been fixed
between 3.1 and 3.1.1.

This problem seems to have become worse in OO.o 3. Previously I was able to to
do a search and delete on blank paragraphs to get rid of the page breaks. Now
this is not working.

Please can we have a fix? Preferably with an option such as merge to a list
alongside merging to a single document.

Currently the behaviour seems to be correct for me (Oo.o 2.4.1 on Debian
Squeeze) with one exception. If I try to open a password protected document
from the open dialogue of the quickstarter the password dialogue appears on the
current screen but the focus is not on it. Hence, if I start typing the
password without remembering to click on the dialogue or its tab nothing
happens.

I have had the same problem. I had two .odt files which I saved as .rtf. I
could open one of the .rtf files successfully with OOo, the other would be blank
so I did some investigating of how they were different.

It seems to be something to do with the paragraph styles that OOo generates when
it saves as .rtf. I get a blank when I open the above attachment 57515 with OOo
so I opened it in a text editor. I deleted the unused styles (the document only
appears to use S1 so I deleted S2 - S12, lines 5 - 15 in the text editor) and lo
and behold I can open the file with OOo.

Just re-reading your comment, ES, this is nothing to do with the HTML component.
This is to do with saving a document as a text file. While the W3C warning is
only an annoyance, would it take much to make adding the BOM optional when
saving as a .txt file?

Done that.

When I download the database from this site, the copy (or at least, the paste)
facility does not work at all.

However, when I use the copy of this database that I have on my own computer it
seems now to copy OK, so maybe the problem is solved.

Do you know what the problem may have been?

This issue seems to have been resolved. If a range is selected, pressing an
arrow key moves the focus to the cell in the direction of the arrow key relative
to the top left hand cell in the range.

This is confirmed in OOo 2.4.0-5 on Linux, Debian testing distribution.

Thanks to whoever did this.

The version is this one: http://packages.debian.org/lenny/openoffice.org .

Steps:
I open a query in design view
I make an alteration, say change the position of a column
I try to close the query saving the changes
I get a Syntax error in SQL expression message:
SQL Status: HY000
Error code: 1000

This seems to have started happening since I upgraded to OOo 2.4.0 (in Debian
Lenny)

Is anything happening about this? It seems as if this covers the problem that I
have, which is that the fields in the mail merge document relate
to a particular data source such as a query. If a different query is selected
the fields are no longer valid even if they are present in the new query. In
order to use a different data source every field has to be altered. This should
not be necessary.

I am now on 2.3.1 and the problem does not seem to have occurred recently.
Common.xcu is 54.7KB, so it is not growing. There appears now to be a numbered
list of 10 picklist items and 100 history items, so presumably these lists are
now correctly limited.

In database tables it does not seem to be possible to select several fields in a
record and copy them to another record or select a whole record and copy it as a
new record. It is only possible to copy one field at a time. This I find
highly inconvenient as I frequently need to insert records which are similar to
existing records or copy several fields to other records.

I assemble this web page: http://www.co-counselling.org.uk/lists/fundates.html
using mail merge and an .odb database to give me clean strict xhtml code. I then
use save as text and save it as a .html file. When I do, a BOM gets added at
the beginning of the file, which is discouraged by http://validator.w3.org/.

There does not seem to be any way to prevent the BOM being added.

Currently I have some 115 items in the recent documents list and common.xcu is
at 57.9KB, so I am expecting it to disappear at any time. Whether or not this
increase causes common.xcu to be deleted, this accumulation of recent documents
in the file is surely a bug in itself.
I am now on OOo 2.0.4.
By the way, I opened issue 69802 because this issue is still showing as a bug in
OOo 1.1. How does it get to be recorded as affecting later versions?

This is still an issue. Can it be brought up to date, i.e. change OS to 'any',
change Version to OOo 2.0.4 ?

Or does a new issue need raising to do this?

Presumably issue 42464 was raised because it was not clear that this RFE covered
the same or a similar issue. Also, 42464 seems to make it clear that it is an
issue on all OSs and version 2 of OOo. It would seem to me that either this RFE
should be marked as a duplicate or it's title, platform and OS altered to
reflect its precise nature and that it is an issue with current versions of OOo.

And, yes, it needs resolving.

It seems unclear what this RFE covers. It is already possible to run queries on
linked database tables if they are in the same Base file, certainly using
HSQLDB. Linking to tables in other sources is covered in issue 42464. Editing
the data in queries is covered in issue 72424.

The open dialogue now defaults to the file type of the application being used,
e.g. Text documents, presumably in response to issue 67163. However, the All
Files *.* option is now not available at all.

In addition I would like the option of defalting to the All Files *.* option to
be available as before.

I am currently on OOo 2.0.4rc3. I reset common.xcu to its default a few days
ago and it still seems to be filling up with recent documents - currently it has
24 entries. I have not put the picklist value in since OOo now lists 10 items
by default. I have yet to see whether common.xcu will reset.

I have raise this as a new issue 69802 .

with 2.0.4 there is a new xcu-file: paths.xcu. Here you can change the paths
which are not shown on the UI.

OK, I have worked out how to do this. It needs a corresponding entry in
Common.xcu

At the moment it is not planned to restore more paths.

So then a new issue does need raising if we want other paths restoring?

And for me, at least, I preferred the original behaviour.

It seems as if this has been implemented in 2.0.4rc3 even though this issue is
not marked as resolved. However, there is now no longer even an option of All
Files *.*.

Is there a way of reverting to the previous behaviour for those who prefer it?

At least, can we have the All Files option.

This phenomenon was reported as a cause for issue 26539, on which no action
appears to be being taken. Issue 26539 was reported as affecting version 1.1
but I am still experiencing it in version 2.0.3.
The syptom is that
/home/john/.openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Common.xcu
keeps increasing in size by adding entries for recent documents until it gets to
a certain point when it is deleted and a default version is substituting,
thereby losing all the settings held in that file.

Yes, that is the problem. I have got a workaround, but like yours, it is
clumsy. I am using the inbuilt HSQL database. Previously I have used access in
which using column aliases as variables is straightforward and very convenient.

It does not seem to - currently I have 20 items listed in it.

Also, does this issue need altering to indicate that it also affects Ooo 2? Or
does a new issue need raising?

It has happened again. I restored my most recently backed up copy of
/home/john/.openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Common.xcu
which restored my settings.

It had 1915 lines in it. This seems to be related to issue 37201. I took the
recent suggestion from from jipajapa Sun Apr 16 03:40:49 -0700 2006 on that
issue and deleted the history files.

Since the list in this file seems to grow without limit. I have taken the
suggestion from http://oooauthors.org/en/FAQs/faqsetup/faqgeneralsetupgui/017
and inserted:
prop oor:name=PickListSize oor:type=xs:int
value10/value
/prop

after:
node oor:name=History

in the hope that this may limit the number of entries.

I do not seem to be able to reproduce the problem now, on 2.0.1-5 (Debian).
Having Use printer metrics set changes the appearence a bit but does not screw
it up.

Why is this issue marked Status: RESOLVED, resolution: FIXED. There does not
seem to be anything here about it being fixed.

It crashed for me yesterday, using OOo_2.0.0rc1 on Windows ME.

OK, the only clue I have is that I have seen somewhere that Acrobat 6.0 has a
bug working with Windows ME, though I don't know the details, and I gather that
Adobe are doing nothing about it as they have abandoned ME.
As I am moving to Linux I will not be having this problem in future.

Set the sort parameters for the column using Data - Sort and save the document.
Close and reload. Have a look at Data - Sort again. All settings are there.

I am only using a simple sort, I do not need to save any sort parameters.

You can make this sticky by naming this area as database area by using Data -
Define Range.

When I do this the data is only sorted in the selected column.

After a range has been selected from left to right, using shift + right arrow, I
would like to exit the range by the focus moving to the cell at the left end of
the range, as happens in Excel when pressing the left arrow key.

I would like the selection of the column used to sort data in a spreadsheet to
be persistant so that whenever the spreadsheet is opened the sort column
defaults to the last one used for that sheet.

I would like something similar, essentially the settings become persistant and
default to the last values used. This is rather the opposite of issue 28895 in
that the settings should persist even when OpenOffice is shut down, however a
default button might cover issue 28895. This also relates to issue 9052.

The documents print correctly from 680_m100. After printing to my Epson Stylus
printer the Test 1 document displays correctly, but reverts to scrunched after
prinitn to my Samsung laser printer. After printing the letter to my Epson
Stylus printer the Courier text can be accessed, although the cursor is one
character out, but the text is displayed distorted.
