The description is wrong: it's the Romanian dictionary that this bug is about,
and I think this should be addressed at the upstream Romanian dictionary
project.

This is the extension link:
  http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/dictionaries-ro-contemporary

It's built from these sources (I think it's built from the hunspell, I'm not
involved with the development project):

Aspell:
  downloads.sourceforge.net/rospell/aspell5-ro-3.3.tar.bz2

Hunspell:
  downloads.sourceforge.net/rospell/ro_RO.3.3.zip

There was a recent update of the Romanian dictioary.

Will you accept an updated dictionary, or just use the files that were previosly
commited?

mba/sba: if you can provide some information about building this (what to
checkout, what to build) I can test it myself.

I tried:
  export CVSROOT=:pserver:anon...@anoncvs.services.openoffice.org:/cvs
  cvs login
  cvs co dictionaries

but saw no ro_RO or ro directory. Am I looking in the wrong place?
mba: could you point me to the changes made so I can contact downstream and have
this shipped in Karmic?

Sorry for the late reply.

As I said in the first message, the dictionary is developped at
http://rospell.sourceforge.net/.

You can get the sources with:
  $ svn checkout
https://rospell.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rospell/dictionar/trunk/
romanian-dict

There is a build script (build.sh) which accepts an argument, what to build:
thesaurus, hunspell, etc.

Running
  $ ./build.sh thesaurus
will build in the thesaurus/ subdirectory two thesauri:
th_ro_RO-classic.{dat|idx} and th_ro_RO.{dat|idx}. th_ro_RO.{dat|idx} uses the
current orthography rules mandated by the Romanian Academy (these rules are used
in all official documents). th_ro_RO-classic.{dat|idx} uses old style rules and
are preferred by some scholars/journalists/etc. but are not main-stream or used
in any official documents).

Running
  $ ./build.sh hunspell
will build a multitude of dictionaries:
- ro_RO - UTF8 encoded, uses correct Romanian diacritics and the modern
orthography rules,
- ro_RO-cedilla - UTF8 encoded, uses *incorrect* Romanian diacritics and the
modern orthography rules,
- ro_RO-classic - UTF8 encoded, uses correct Romanian diacritics and the *old*
orthography rules,
- ro_RO-iso8859-2 iso8859-2 encoded version of ro_RO.

As you can see there are a few quirks regarding the Romanian language. The
extension I gave in the first link is one that follows the current orthography
rules imposed by the Romanian Academy, but not all Romanians follow these rules.

I'd like to know whether you can include two language-packs for the Romanian
language:
- one called simply „Romanian” with dict+hyph that follow the Academy rules,
- one called „Romanian (classic)” (or smth. like that) with old-style rules.

If you can't bundle both kinds of dicts then the way to go is to use the one
that follows the Academy rules.

To spare you the trouble, I built these myself:
  http://swarm.cs.pub.ro/~lucian/store/oodicts/

Please tell me if there's something else I can help with.

There is no default Romanian dictionary in OpenOffice, but there is an
extension.

The dictionary is tri-licensed under under GPL 2.0/LGPL 2.1/MPL 1.1 similar to
other dictionaries included by default - so there aren't any licensing issues.

The sources for the current Romanian extension can be found at
 http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/dictionaries-ro

For references, the dictionary, hyphenator and thesaurus are developed at
http://rospell.sourceforge.net/. The latest version of these files can be found
on http://rospell.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/rospell/dictionar/trunk/latest/.

There is a misunderstanding regarding the form of the correct Romanian
diacritics:
ș, Ș, ț, Ț are often replaced with the incorrect: ş, Ş, ţ, Ţ (notice that the
correct diacritics have a comma underneath, not a cedilla as in the case of the
incorrect ones).
For more details on this issue see http://secarica.ro/html/s-uri_si_t-uri.html
or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/108057

I use Ubuntu 7.04's Open Office 2.2.0-1ubuntu4, I'm not sure how to map this to
standard Open Office versions, but the issue (IMHO) is from the dictionary.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document and from
Right click - Edit paragraph style - Font Tab - Language
select Romanian (make sure to have the dictionary installed - visual cue:
an icon with the text ABC and a check mark on it on the left of the word
  Romanian.
2. Inset the word fața (notice the comma underneath the letter t)
3. Notice that the spell checker has marked the word as being incorrect and
offers as correct alternatives the words: fata and faţa (the last one
  has an incorrect cedilla underneath).

Expected behavior:
The spell checker should accept the word fața (with a comma underneath) as the
correct form, and correct cedilla based words to their comma versions.
