Hmm, the case seems to be even more complicated.

Attached some examples:

V12_N8-T_v.eps: eps with preview, used in the following examples.
epstest_ooo203.odt: eps in text document: OK with ooo-dev-2.0.3-173
epstest_so832.odt: same, NOT OK with SO8, update 3 rev. 2 (preview lost)

epstest_article_empty_7.sxw: Sample document (the one I discovered the bug
with, however empty except for the graphics): OK with SO7 update 6
epstest_article_empty_203.odt: same, NOT OK with ooo-dev-2.0.3-173. (That is:
preview is not embedded in document. SO8 and SO7 fail to show a preview, OOo-
dev seems to regenerate a preview but the result is not satisfying: the crop
margin seems to be ignored) I get the same result with SO8, update 3 rev. 2 or
with sxw as document format.

- SO8 fails always
- OOo 203 fails sometimes

HTH

Does not work for me with build 176...

Might be
- you are not using the same build (me: OOo_2.0.176_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz,
rpm: ooo-dev-writer-2.0.4-176)
- you are using different helper tools (me: ESP Ghostscript 7.05.6, ImageMagick
5.5.4, pstoedit: version 3.32. Don't know, which one is actually used...)
- different OS (me: SuSE 8.2, Kernel 2.4.20, glibc 2.3.2...)

However, the main problem IMHO is that an existing (lovingly hand-made) preview
gets deleted and apparently regenerated with this build. Keeping the preview if
it's already there would solve most of the problem.

Feel free to ask if you need additional information to track this down.

Insert an eps figure that has an embedded bitmap preview in a text document and
save - eps preview is not saved but lost.

This bug seems to have been introduced by a recent update:

- SO7 Product Update 6, Staroffice8 (no product patches, rpm 8.0.0.-124) and
Openoffice 2.0.2.7.1 (SuSE build for 10.0) work fine.
- SO8 PU3 (rpm 8.0.3-5), SO8 PU3 rev 2 and the ooo-dev versions 2.0.3-169 and
2.0.3-173 fail.

Looking into the files (saved as .sxw, renamed to .zip, unzipped) reveals that
previously the images were included as .svm whereas in the defective versions
they are included as plain .eps (w/o preview).

One more observation: 2.0.3-173 tries to regenerate the preview (I suppose
thats connected with issue 9290) but fails to respect a cropped left margin.
The new preview is shifted.

The attached document contains a sheet that is only visible in the navigator
but
not as a tab in the calc window. Because of that it cannot be deleted or changed
 :(
I guess it's a leftover from a linked document.

Open the attached SO7 file (stripped template for letters) and place the cursor
in the text box in the upper left by clicking the mouse in it.
OOo will start using 100% cpu time and continue to do so until killed.

I've tested OOo2.0, OOo2.0.1 ('Novell edition') and SO8 (Product Update 1), all
Linux. Saving the document in a different format (eg. odt) does not help.
SO7 (Product Update 4, Linux) works well with this file, as do the versions
mentioned above until you try to enter the address the letter is going to ;)

Issue 9290 is about converting eps - emf or eps - png to provide a preview.

This issue goes beyond: it's about eps - pdf. Aim: provide proper vector
graphics in exported pdf instead of potentially ugly and big (in terms of file
size) bitmap.

So why not use the emf preview from issue 9290, it's a vector format as well?
In
my experience, the conversion eps - emf will produce poor results in most
cases
(speaking of line style and thickness, font type, circles ending up as
something
quite like but not entirely a circle...).

I think an additional conversion step upon exporting as pdf is necessary to
produce high quality and low footprint results (possibly using the preview
obtained from 9290 as a fallback).

I'm referring to issue 53503
cite
When I load an .eps image file into my document, and print to a postscript
printer, the eps file is embedded and prints correctly.
When I choose PDF export, the embedded eps preview is shown in the PDF instead
and when the PDf is printed, the embedded eps preview is printed instead of the
actual eps.
/cite

This was turned down because OOo does not have a builtin postscript
interpreter.
However, if there is a ps interpreter available on the platform (as is the case
on most Linux boxes and on a lot of Win installations I know), it should be
used.

Using eps images is still the number one choice if you want to include high-
quality (vector) graphics, say: diagrams for scientific publications and the
like, which are produced by some plot program or other.

Up to now, you have to 'print' the document with a postscript converter to a
file (again, standard on Linux or available for free from Adobe for Win) and
then call the ps-pdf converter manually to get said high-quality output. This
renders the nice pdf-export feature included in OOo quite useless, sorry to say
that.
