[graphics-issues] [Issue 110976] [performance] extremely s low drag operations when antialiasing is turne d on
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=110976 --- Additional comments from nekoh...@openoffice.org Mon Apr 19 20:12:44 + 2010 --- As I mentionned in the initial description, the graphic card is an integrated Intel i915 chipset, which are among the best supported in Linux. However, this bug is CPU-bound, not GPU-bound. The GPU seems to have nothing to do with it, and even if it did, you shouldn't need a top of the line GPU to drag a friggin' slide :) especially when the GPU is perfectly capable of running Compiz, GNOME Shell, or playing games like OpenArena. To reproduce, try dragging 4 or more slides at once with a presentation that has 50 slides or so. And do it *on a netbook*, not a powerful laptop/desktop machine. Dragging only one slide will be a bit slower (it's a bit more subtle), but as soon as you drag multiple slides, it's unusable. Also, make sure to actually compare the performance with the option toggle ON vs OFF. Unless you compare, you may not know what "fast" feels like ;) Here is a video demonstration of the problem, if it can help: http://jeff.ecchi.ca/public/ooo-110976.ogv - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Not just slightly, but very noticeably so. It is almost impossible to drag slides (either in the "slide sorter" or in the slide sidebar in normal view) because you have to wait for the CPU to start responding again. Users shouldn't be expected to require a core2quad to use the slide sorter with default options, especially since dragging slides doesn't actually drag a thumbnail of the slide, but just an outline. Turning off this option makes everything responsive again. Now, while #1 is kind-of expected because the items in the slide get antialiased, #2 is unacceptable. This is not a matter of "well just turn the option off": antialiasing should not ever affect the slide sorter or the sidebar (as I said, it doesn't even drag the thumbnail, just the outline). This is a usability issue as well as a performance issue, in the sense that unresponsive UIs make users frustrated, and it contributes to the perceived bloat in OOo. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. This is not the case with the GTK filechooser that shows up when you do a normal file "save as" operation - more importantly: this widget is completely useless when using the GTK filechooser dialog, because it replicates exactly the same thing as the combobox that allows you to set the mimetype, just above. This behavior would be correct if I was in absolute zoom mode (for example, if I set it to stay at 100% or 80% or some other value). However, when I am in "page width" or "optimal" zoom mode, I expect the zoom to be automatically recalculated when the very first note is created in a document, or when the last note is removed. The only "workaround" for this is to (un)maximize the window to force zoom recalculation. I tried searching the bug tracker for this issue but couldn't find duplicates (Issue #85841 doesn't seem to be the same problem, and it's very old). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [framework-issues] [Issue 97688] better default gradient se t
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=97688 --- Additional comments from nekoh...@openoffice.org Mon Jan 5 19:11:33 + 2009 --- I partly disagree: a default palette should (in my humble opinion) be intended to look good and provide a sensible default that can be applied to most situations, not a special effects showcase. Also, I "could" have provided variants for radial/axial/square/whatever types but: - they are generally (except radial, in some cases) ugly and unsuitable for diagrams or charts, really. They are also constraining/lack flexibility (no way to have more than 2 colors, or set precise points where those colors are positioned, for example) - I would just have duplicated all the linear gradients I have done here and flipped the switch from "linear" to "radial" or "axial" or whatever. What's the point? The user could have done so him/herself. - past a certain amount, too much choice is not a good thing, both cognitively (Iyengar and Lepper, 2008) [1] and artistically (because they will start showing lack of uniqueness) Finally, the defaults are intended to be starting points that the user can customize, but not a "look, we can do ALL gradient types!" gallery. In the line of thought that trying to provide more stuff would just be duplicates (see above) or that the more diversity you try to provide, the more it looks like what we currently had up to now, I think it would be better (and easier) to exercise voluntary restraint in the defaults that are provided. But yeah, maybe 2-3 radial gradients could be added, if they can look good ;) [1] http://www.columbia.edu/~ss957/articles/Choice_is_Demotivating.pdf - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. They have that '95 look, as if they were meant as a benchmark for colors (squared radial pink to green, anyone?). They generally lack subtlety and a more "professional" look, and, as such, discourage the user from using them at all. They are really not suitable for charts or flowchart boxes. I discovered recently that I can edit ~/.openoffice.org/3/user/config/standard.sog and thus create a nice array of slick gradients. Therefore, you can edit them there and they will be available in the Format -> Page dialog. Thus, the format -> page dialog is "only" missing a tab that already exists in the object color properties dialogs. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. The current behavior also has the following problems - it is completely hellish to try to select the stuff, you have to place the mouse cursor precisely on characters to activate the "text box" that contains the notes - it has margins all around, as if I was taking notes on paper. Huge waste of space or my already tiny screen. If I wanted to take notes by hand, I would be using blank paper or print out the slides, I don't want the drawbacks of paper on my screen when I take notes with a laptop. - it doesn't scroll. Ever tried taking huge amounts of notes on one slide? In this case, don't adjust the font size. - when resizing GROUPS of objects (>1 objects), resize the contained text This is incredibly frustrating. To make flowcharts, I need to go in OOo Draw (because Writer won't let me use Connectors!), and when I paste the thing back into Writer, the font sizes are too big and destroy all the flow chart balance (it affects connectors, etc). I have to manually select the flow chart items and reduce the font sizes. It's madness. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I actually thought, until very recently, that it was not possible -- and I've been using openoffice for 4 years! The thing is, when you create the sidebar initially, it is easy because the "target shadow" is very easily noticeable and hints you that a sidebar will be created. However, when you want to add another item in that same sidebar, the shadow really is impossible to notice. Take a look at this screencast, which will explain the problem much more efficiently: http://jeff.ecchi.ca/public/openoffice%20floating%20pane%20drag%20into%20sidebar.ogg If possible, attach that file to this bug report as I cannot guarantee the availability of my server. While this may rarely happen with the Vertical scrollbar, the Horizontal scrollbar, however, is rarely (never) used in "page width" or "optimal" zoom. The scrollbar (that cannot be scrolled anyway) adds uneccesary visual clutter. I know this is from the GNOME HIG, but I believe this could be applied to all platforms. Quote from the HIG (they refer to GTK I know): "Only display scrollbars when they are required for sliding the view. If an object fits inside the viewer control, don't draw scrollbars. If you are using a GtkScrolledWindow, call gtk_scrolled_window_set_policy setting the appropriate axis (or axes) to GTK_POLICY_AUTOMATIC." http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/controls-scrollbars.html - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [ui-issues] [Issue 73393] performance: toolbar icons are made insensitive and sensitive on save or load
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=73393 Issue #|73393 Summary|performance: toolbar icons are made insensitive and se |nsitive on save or load Component|ui Version|OOo 2.0.4 Platform|All URL| OS/Version|Linux Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|ui Assigned to|sba Reported by|nekohayo --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Jan 11 14:57:55 -0800 2007 --- One of the major issues making openoffice "look slow" is that every single time we load or save a document, the toolbars are frozen and unfrozen; the icons and widgets are made insensitive for the duration of the save and then made sensitive again afterwards. I am not sure if this is only on the Linux side (gnome desktop here), but this process is VERY slow. It may be 1-2 seconds, but those 1-2 seconds make the whole application "look" slow, visually speaking. I also noticed that on startup, the icons pile up on each other, flicker a couple of times, then reposition themselves along the toolbars with some more flickering. This is scary. What's up with that? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 70456] edit links should be easie r to discover / images should not be linked as default
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=70456 Issue #|70456 Summary|edit links should be easier to discover / images shoul |d not be linked as default Component|Word processor Version|OOo 2.0.4 Platform|All URL| OS/Version|All Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|ui Assigned to|mru Reported by|nekohayo --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Oct 15 16:36:10 -0700 2006 --- Copy-pasting contents from a webpage that contains images links the images by default (I object to this behavior, but I assume it is already like that for a reason?), and the user cannot easily figure out how to "save" the images with the document. The only way I have been told is to use the edit menu and use the "Links..." item. I would like that to be availabe in a popup menu when clicking on images and/or in the image toolbar. If the user does not know about that, he will just assume his images are "saved" and will have very bad surprises. Here are the consequences of the current "link images" default behavior: * Everytime you load that document, if the images were on the Internet, you will need an internet connection * Even if you have a fast 3mbits internet connection, it will make your computer hang for a LONG time loading those images. * Moving through the pages of a document makes you lag in a terrible way (images are loaded one at a time (or so it seems!) * Deleting those images is painful because, once again, you lag while doing that. * If you copy-paste contents from a local HTML page that has images, and delete the page/images OR move them, the images will be broken inside the ODT file and you will have no way of accessing them. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Why should the behavior be any different than using the insert menu? As far as I remember, drag and dropping into writer does not link, but instead embeds the image. And for the "linked bitmap inserted", well I could not notice this at all, status bars don't grab so much attention. Shouldn't it be possible to have instead a dialog asking if you want to link or embed the images (with the option of always remembering for this document, or always remembering for all documents). - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Does it reproduce on your side? I'm not really knowledgeable so the info I can provide is pretty much the culprit file and the way I can make it crash. And... how can the images be inserted as links? Is this a bug or a feature? I inserted them by drag and dropping them in the slides. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=65220 Issue #:|65220 Summary:|impress complains about missing images and crashes |when displaying certain slides Component:|Presentation Version:|OOo 2.0.2 Platform:|All URL:| OS/Version:|All Status:|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard:| Keywords:| Resolution:| Issue type:|DEFECT Priority:|P3 Subcomponent:|editing Assigned to:|wg Reported by:|nekohayo --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue May 9 08:31:16 -0700 2006 --- Hi, let me say that this is just a test case I want to send to you guys. I have been able to reproduce the behavior on every computer I tried. This ODP was made from a PPT file. It all worked fine, until after a few minutes it must have crashed or something. Then it started complaining about the image files being missing (they were right in the same folder and were not moved). Now, is ODP supposed to not "embed" any media into itself? That would not seem really normal. I think the PPT file did embed the files. Anyhow, when I saved the file back into a PPT format, all the image issues and the crashes were solved. Now, for the crash part. If you open up this file and try to go to slide 5-6, it should crash Impress. I hope this can be useful for you guys. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
