Switching off the snap to grid option for each file worked. Is this the
default?

This problem occurs after the file is fixed and saved on a local PC. The
uploading has nothing to do with it. See for yourself by downloading one of the
files (http://www.nostabo.net/spreadsheets/v2/Calc_lesson5_v2.odp) and notice
how the images move after you relocate them. As I mentioned in the beginning
post this file has these problems on slides 3, 48, 65, 66, 76, 94.

The odd thing is they always seem to want to return to the same place after
being rearranged. It is like they are snapping to an invisible grid.

Although these files were originally taken from Excel tutorials I wrote using
PowerPoint (and saved as PPS files) they have been saved several times as ODP
files. Their PowerPoint ancestry should have no effect?

I have several slideshows that use small images such as images of toolbar
buttons and exclamation and note markers. In every one of the slideshows
these images do not stay where they were placed in the saved ODP file. These
images are supposed to be placed within (or rather on top of) a text box, which
seems like a simple task...

Each time I put them back where they belong and upload the file(s) for others to
retrieve the images move to other locations on the slide making them look sloppy
and Impress look buggy!

You can download one of the ODPs here:
http://www.nostabo.net/spreadsheets/v2/Calc_lesson5_v2.odp

In the above file look at slides 3, 48, 65, 66, 76, 94.

And you can look at a PDF of the same slideshow that does not have this same
problem here:
http://www.nostabo.net/spreadsheets/v2/Calc_lesson5_v2.pdf

I would attach the files, but they are over 6 and 7 megabytes respectively.

The Format Change case... menu item only offers to change the selected text
from Upper to Lower case (and vise versa). MSO has those and several more under
a similar menu item. These added formats include Sentence, Title and Toogle
case. OOO does have similar functions, but they are buried under Format
Character Font Effects Effects.

Since most of this functionality is available in OOo 2.0.3 it seems that it
would be easy to adjust the menu?

Issues 18112, 31555, 54867, 62234, and even as far back as 1601 all request the
same basic idea...a centralized, easily accesible Format case menu with support
for all common cases.

To make it easier for average (or rather casual) word processing users to create
a paragraph that uses a Hanging indent, the Paragraph formatting dialog's
Indents and Spacing tab should have a *clear* method of implementing this
common type of indetion style. This feature would be in line with the MSO method
of formatting a paragraph with a hanging indent.

Currently it seems that the preferred method is by applying the Hanging
indent style...which is a bit to complex for the average casual user (I think).

The suggested message Only numbers and characters are allowed for named ranges.
Every combination which could be a cell reference (e.g. A1 - IV65536) is not
allowed.
Is not completely true, you can use underscores (_), periods (.) colons (:),
dollar signs ($), and question marks (?); at least in my version (English USA)
2.0.2

But I agree that the message is vague, however it is consistent with other
spreadsheet applications.

The hyperlinks created in Calc have an ugly gray background that can not be
changed or removed. They do not look like a hyperlink at first glance, and I
would suppose that new users might be confused since the standard among
spreadsheets is to create a traditional looking link. I suggest that Calc simply
create hyperlinks that look like hyperlinks (like in Gnumeric and Excel). The
hyperlinks should also be able to be fully formatted to change their appearance
(again like Gnumeric and Excel).

The ability to modify the tip (as in Gnumeric) or screen tip (Excel) that is
displayed when you hover over the link would also be a nice addition to Calc

The AutoInclude topic in the online help also has problems:

Automatically adds abbreviations or words that start with two capital letters
to the corresponding list of exceptions. This feature only works if the Correct
TWo INitial CApitals option or the Capitalize first letter of every sentence
option are selected in the [T] column onOptions tab of this dialog.

Notice the same use of [T] column and the lack of a space between on and
options in the last line.

It would be nice to have a merge menu item on the context menu that is
dispplayed when you right click on a mergable selection of cells. That is
cells adjacent vertically or horizontally.

Since the toolbar detects mergable selections it should be fairly easy to
implement a context menu item...

It appears that the Extended tips for the AutoCorrect's AutoInclude option
(found on the Exceptions tab) is either not completed or formatted badly. There
seems to be 2 unnecessary linebreaks at the end and the reference to the [T]
column makes no sense.

I will upload aa example screenshot

If you create a text hyperlink in a cell, and then open the Hyperlink dialog to
edit it, you can change the text link without problems. However, if you try to
change the link to a button it places a new button link over the existing text
link. I would think that the text link would be overwritten by the button?

The spellcheck feature does not Undo under Calc. After accepting a suggested
change and moving to another alleged spelling error, the Undo becomes active as
it should. When you click the Undo button the highlighted (red) text in the Not
in dictionary text box loses its highlight, but the previous change by the
Spellcheck is not undone.

I have tried several methods of importing my spreadsheet data into a Base table
without any good results. The Base to Calc insertion via the Data Source
Explorer is great, but shouldn't this work both ways?

I understand the constraints of importing data into a database, but compatible
data sources should be simple to move data between. If there is a way to do this
I haven't found any help in the online help.

The help could also be clarified. Maybe instead of simply saying Press Enter
when finished. try When finished press the Enter key to display the list of
available ranges or tables.?

There are some of us that need more help ;-)

which is to the right.

When entering a URL into Calc's External Data dialog nothing happens (the tables
are not listed in the Available Tables/Ranges listbox) until you press the
Enter key. The only buttons that are active are the Help and Cancel
buttons...the OK button is greyed out, so pressing the Enter key is not
intuitive, nor is it a suggested action by the Help docs.

I just guessed at pressing the Enter key after waiting for the list to appear. I
have read (on the OOoForums)that this is due to a slow connection...I've waited
10 minutes on a fast cable connection (1.5Mbps) for anything to happen!

The Macro Recorder of Calc, version 1.9.100, fails to format columns. This
appears to be a general failure of the recorder to following a lengthy string of
keystrokes. To verify this problem download the csv file from this Yahoo link
and open it under Calc:

http://www.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=^dji ^ixk ^ixic ^gspc ^n225
^hsi ^ftse msft ibm aapl sunw hpq sgi csco dell goog amznf=snl1d1t1c1ove=.csv

Then start the Macro Recorder and record the following actions:
1) Insert a row a the top of the spreadsheet and enter names for each column;
Symbol, Company, Last, Date, Time, Change, Open, and Volume (now all the columns
should have headers).
2) Format the Name column (#2) to all Lowercase letters
3) Format the Last column (#3) to US currency
4) Format the Open column (#7) to US currency
5) Format the Volume column (#8) to use a thousands separator
6) Save the macro and close the file without saving it, now reopen the CSV file
(the undedited version) and run the macro.

Everything up to #2 above is completed, but the columns are not formatted (#3-5)

Hmmm...OOo 1.1.4 performs well with this task.

I completely removed all traces of any 1.9.x build and installed 1.9.95. I seem
to have the same situation as kb without the refernces to any other 1.9.x
builds. /etc/openoffice.org-1.9/openoffice.org1.9.95 is linked to
/opt/openoffice.org1.9.95

Only root has menu items. However, when I go to /usr/share/applications and
click on one of the OpenOffice.org 1.9 icons (such as OpenOffice.org 1.9 Calc
which is linked to /etc/openoffice.org-1.9/share/xdg/calc.desktop) OOo starts
up. So the /etc/openoffice.org-1.9/share/xdg/___.desktop files open OOo, in my
case there are no menus for anyone but root (root being the user that ran the
rpm install)

I did notice that there were a lot of errors noted during the install? Should we
try to capture these?

BTW, what it the best way to clean out the OOo rpm install?...completely, I did
it by hand last time :-(

The following procedure (as copied from the online Help) DOES NOT work:

You can set a global configuration so that it applies to all documents of this
type, or you can connect the configuration to a specific document, which must
exist as a file.
1.Load the document that you want to connect to the configuration, or open any
document of the same type.
2.Set the configuration. For example, select the toolbars you want to have
visible or define what is on the toolbars, menus or Status Bar, and so on. All
such configuration options are found under Tools - Configure.
3.Click Save in the dialog Tools - Configure. Another dialog appears in which
you can save the configuration.
4.In the File Type combo box, select All files.
5.In the large list box of the Save dialog, select the file you want to connect
to the configuration.
6.Click Save. A prompt appears, asking whether you want to replace the file or
not. This query concerns only the configuration connected to the document, not
the contents of the document.
7.Confirm overwrite.
The current configuration is now connected to the document that you selected in
the Save dialog.
As soon as you load or open this document, the saved configuration becomes
active. The global default configuration is restored when you load or open
another document that does not contain custom configuration information.

I have tried this with a Calc file and the configuration was not saved. The
change I tried to apply to the file was to assign a shortcut key (shift+F3)to
open the Select Macro (Run Macro) dialog.

Regarding build 1.9.84

When a cell that displays an error code such as #NAME? or #REF is selected (or
the cell contains the cursor) the status bar does not update the error message
unless you right click on the status bar and click on an item from the context
menu.

The status bar error message display should update when the cell selection

Running update-desktop-database /usr/share/applications as root didn't add the
menus.

As an additional note to this situation I noticed that the installion did
associate OOo files *.sxw, *.sxc with the beta version for my user account. When
I double click on an OOo file the beta version starts up instead of the older
version (1.1.4)...but there are no menu items for the beta components.

Installing the beta via rpms, using the command rpm -i --nodeps *.rpm while
root creates GNOME menus only for root. This was also the case with previous
dev builds. My Linux system is a Gentoo PC based 2.6.11 kernel with GNOME 2.8.3

Due to permissions ordinary users can not run the rpm install program ;-)

The formatting shortcut keys do not work in Calc 1.9.79 under Linux. The keys
in question Crtl+Shift+1 (or 2,3,4,5,6) produce only underlined text that
disappears when the cell becomes inactive. When the cell becomes inactive the
font sometimes changes to Bitsream Vera Sans. My machine is running Gentoo Linux
2.6.10 with GNOME 2.8.3
