This still seems to be a problem in 2.2.1. When I edit the file in OOo (see
issue2.png) the formula displays fine, but when I save it as a .doc and open it
in Word, some of the characters don't display (see issue1.png). I have had this
problem a long time ago sometimes when exporting to .pdf as well, but have never
dealt with it, but it would really help me because I share files with others who
use Word, and I don't want to be stuck using equation editor.

Thanks.

First off, is there any progress on this enhancement?

Second, I was using the workaround proposed, but I am not sure what to do after
I remove the sections to Save As... a .odt file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I had a big file and wanted to turn it into a master document. I selected File
Send Create Master Document and it seemed to work as far as breaking up the
chapters, but it created several .sxw files instead of .odt files. Is this
correct?

Thanks.

I cannot reproduce this in Windows XP. The main folder is called My Documents
which has a space in it, and all of my files open just fine.

Some questions to proceed:

Do other programs open files on your system?
Did a previous version of OOo work?
Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing?

Closing as works for me until more information is received.

Yes, I would imagine it would be because computers don't really know what you
type. I guess you could fix it be searching for Paul_ and replacing it with
Paul.

Closing as invalid.

You should probably also download the latest version of OOo either 1.1.5 or
2.0.3.

In Calc, I should be allowed to define which axis my data goes on.

As it stands, the data in the left column always go on the x-axis, which is the
standard I suppose, but if I have multiple columns and want to make a
non-standard graph, (like put my dependent variable on the y-axis) I would like
to be able to.

I can accomplish this by making a whole extra column, but that shouldn't be
necessary.

Thanks.

This issue is similar to 47493 but deals with Writer. It would be nice if what
OOo calls a note would appear like comments do in MSO. This would help faciliate
editing so that you don't have to double click on a note to see its full text.

I would be even more helpful, IMO. while tracking changes.

I have attached a picture of how it looks in MS Word.

When making a best fit (aka trend or regression) line I would like to extend all
of the way to y-axis. The biggest reason for this is that I would like to use it
to teach students and it would be very helpful if the line went all the way to
the y-axis so I could talk about the y-intercept. As it stand, I have 3 options:

1) Extend the line by hand
2) Add extra data points that I know make happen what I want to happen.
3) Use Excel.

To be honest in a pinch I use Excel and I don't want to have to.

I didn't try 1.9.119, but in 1.9.120, this still happens. Make sure you are
following the instructions exactly as I typed and that the 'i' in in is
lowercase or else you get different results.

It is a won't fix or can't fix then fine, but I do think it is still an issue.

I am marking this as a dup of 33392.

I did this, because 33392 has essentially the same request, but it asks for it
to be added to the options menu whereas this big seems to be solved.

Does that make sense?

I've done some test and here is what I have discovered:

In the DOC file Robert attached, the phrase on top has been assigned the
paragraph style header, although it is not a header in the sense of the page
styles thinking it is a header. I think it is in a table, but I don't know if
that is relavant. This is what I tested:

In 1.1.4 -- If I change the formatting of the text manually, that is I don't
adjust the style, and save as a .doc file and reopen, the manual formatting
changes remain.

In 1.9.110 1.9.108 (I don't have 1.9.109 installed) -- Repeated the same test
as in 1.1.4 and it did not work. However, if I manually changed the formatting
and saved as a .ODT file and reopened the manual changes stayed.

Further, in 1.9.110, I edited the style Header, and the text formatting changed,
I saved as a .DOC file and reopened, and the changes to the text that occured
because I changed the style remained.

So, ultimately, this is an issue with exporting to .DOC format with manual
formatting changes, the style always overides when reopening.

One futher test this round. I opened the document in Word, changed the
formatting manually, saved as .DOC and reopened in 1.9.110 1.9.108 and the
manual formatting changes stayed.

So, this seems to be an issue with 1.9.110 exporting a DOC file with the style
formatting overiding the manual changes.

Updated summary, version, OS, and marked as regression because it works as I
think it should in 1.1.4.

More madness.

I some more tests.

I did three different things in 1.9.110, saved as .DOC, and reopened:

1) I highlighted the entire top line and changed the font manually to Verdana 14

2) I change the font of the words Introduction FAQ for to Verdana 14 and
didn't touch Open Office.

3) I made the word FAQ Bold, for italicized, and Open Office underlined.

Results:

1r) Same as previous entry, entire line reverts to original look.

2r) Formatting on Introduction FAQ for stayed as Verdana 14 and Open Office
stayed untouched.

3r) FAQ stayed Bold, for stayed italicized, but Open Office returned to TNR
12.

It seems that there is something special about the phrase Open Office in this
document.

Two more tests, same saving opening parameters:

4) Select entire first line. Right Click and select default. Repeat test 3 from
above.

5) Select entire first line. Right Click and select default. Make the words FAQ
for Open Office bold.

Results:

4r) Same as before, FAQ stayed Bold, for stayed italicized, but Open Office
returned to TNR 12.

5r) Entire phrase reverts to TNR 12.

Just to check two more things:

Tests:

6) Opened the file from test 4 in MS Word.

7) Switch the configuration of test 4, making FAQ undelined, for, bold, and Open
italicized and Office bold.

Results:

6r) Same result as 4r, Open Office is back to TNR 12.

7r) New result. FAQ stayed underline (expected), for stayed bold (expected) Open
stayed italicized, but bold returned to TNR 12!

What in the world?

There is something magical about the world Office here.

Final test, and then I think I quit.

I opened a new text document in 1.9.110 and typed the following line:
Thank you for using Open Office

I made the paragraph style Header, I alternated font attributes: B, I, U, B, I,
U for each word. Saved as .doc, reopened, all formatting remains.

So, it seems it is an issue of Writer exporting the word Office in Robert's
file. I am not sure what is up.

Sorry if this was long an organized in a manner that is illogical to you, it is
the best way I could think of to track all of my tests.

I have now even retype the line in Robert's same document and tried again, and
the it still not save manual formatting. Weird.

I do note that you have applied the style to the text of the document. It says
the entire body of the document is in the header style, but it is not really.
Probably doesn't matter for this issue, but you may want to look at it.

Sounds like a StarDock issue. Is this still persistant in the new betas?

I don't think this is OOo's problem unless someone else can confirm it is
happening not with Stardock.

Sorry.

I tried to dock the Styles and Formatting window as I could dock the Stylist in
1.1.4 by holding down Ctrl and moving it to the side of the screen, it didn't
work.

I read help and it said I should double click on it and it would dock.

No luck.

Am I doing the right thing, or is this a defect?

I have Win XP and OOo 1.1.100 and I am running dual monitors. I don't know if
that could be a problem, but the docking works fine in 1.1.4.

Thanks.

of the opposite controls of 1.1.4.

I am just so very happy.

I go around singing the praises of OOo to my friends, and they don't understand
why they should switch when they already have MS Office, but this is a reason.
The people have a voice. It is a beautiful thing.

Try this for me:

1) Open the document you need the split windows for
2) Select *Window New Window* (Note that a second window opens.
3) (This step works in Windows, I don't know how other desktops handle it.) Hold
down Control and select both windows in question on the task bar.
4) Right click and select /Tile Horizontally/.

Did that work? Now you have two editable windows with the same document. See
attached screen shot. (I have dual monitors, so the screen shot looks big, but
Writer is only on one of my screens.

Let me know if this works.

@sba -- Did you even read what I wrote?

I don't care if this issue is closed, I didn't think it could be fixed in the
first place. To quote:

That's fine. I didn't know if anyone had any brillinat ideas about a way to fix
this.

What I didn't like, as I stated was this comment from cloph:

OOo doesn't include a language parser and doesn't have mind-reading
capabilities.

This whole sentence could have been omitted from cloph's reply. It would have
saved time and not insulted me. Even the part about the language parse was okay,
but the comment about mind-reading capabilities is just demeaning.

I have filed dozens of issue and QAed and commented on dozens of other issues.
Certainly not as many as you and cloph, but I do think, regardless who the
reported is, QA people should have a certain level of respect for the people
that take time to report issues.

The attitude of cloph, and a little of yours although I think you were tryingt
to make peace, makes me want to stop filing issues. It was just something I
noticed. If it is the expected or the only possible behavior, fine, whatever, I
am not trying to say it is a P1 issue. But, how am I supposed to know if it is a
bug or expected unless I report it. I searched for duplicates first, saw none
and filed the issue.

If you want people to stop filing issues if they aren't sure if it is a bug or
not I will stop encouraging people to file issues in the users and discuss list
and I will stop also.

I apologize for any invonvience I have caused.

Fair enough, I truly do appreciate you clarifying that (no sarcasm).

Generally when I think of the phrase mind reading abilities, it usually said
emphatically in a sarcastic sense when people are fighting.

No worries though.

I think that is a fair compromise.

I would still like to see the option implemented in the future to go back to the
world of 1.1.x. Should we open a new issue for 3.0 once this one is resolved?

Cloph --

That's fine. I didn't know if anyone had any brillinat ideas about a way to fix
this.

I would appreciate a lot less attitude. I realize that OOo can't read minds, but
if this is the attitude that I am going to encounter, I will stop filing bugs.

While testing your comments, I noticed that OOo doesn't handle this sentence
well either. I work for the F.B.I. in Virginia. If you 3x click on Viginia
B. gets selected, and if your 3x click on for, I to B. gets selected.

I am going to file a separate issue. Please con't comment on it if you can't be
civil.

When working with this sentence, I work for the F.B.I. in Virginia. I noticed
some problems with the 3x method to select sentences.

If I 3x click on Virginia, B. gets selected.

If I 3x click on for, I through B. gets selected. I don't know if anything
can be done to make it smarter, I realize it has to work on if...then type
statements, but I just thought I would report it.

@mj -- mj, if you would, please give me step by step instruction of how to do
this so that the background of a square I draw in *Writer or Calc* comes back
with a area fill different than Blue.

What you refer to are the styles for Draw. Even if you change the default style
in Draw, it doesn't carry over to Writer.

This is not an error. This is expected and still the case in 2.0. OOo does not
create the HTML code until the file is saved. This would be like trying to the
the contents.xml of an unsaved document, you can't do it, because it hasn't been
created.

Closing as wontfix.

This is still true in 1.9.108, and I think it is a RFE that should be
considered. I found it odd that I saved my file as .HTML document and I couldn't
view the source. Why is this?

#1 - 3 are still present in 1.9.108. I understand why all of the behaviors are
as is, but #2 is really bizarre. Cut then Paste doesn't return the document to
how it was, but then again you can just press ctrl+z.

I think I like #1 3the way it is, because when I cut a word I want that space
to be removed too.

#4 is fixed in 2.0.

I am going to mark as confirmed for an RFE, but I would suggest if you want this
to be seriously considered that you morph this into three issues instead of one
as you are making 3 requests.

Triple click selects more than the sentence if the first letter of the sentence
isn't capitilzed. It will select from a period to the right of the cursor to the
start of a capitilized sentenced to the left of the cursor.

This is briefly mentioned in issue #20126, but I felt it could use its own
issue.

Trying to duplicate.

I don't know what you mean when you say set up a list of heading styles and
apply outline numbering the whole list.

How did you apply outline numbering? I did *Tool Outline Numbering* But that
just seems to be a dialog box, how did you apply outline numbering?

Changes the OS to All, and the version m104, because that is what the user
mentioned on the user list.

I think a more descriptive summary could be added, but I don't understand the
problem fully yet, so I didn't change it.

I found it odd that words like Firefox and Thunderbird were not in the
Thunderbird dictionary. This started a discussion and it was suggested that OOo
should include these words in its diction along with other open sourse related
words.

I have opened this issue so that that process might begin. Either they can be
added to the standard dictionary, or it was suggested that there should be
started an OSS dictionary that all programs could use.

The reason for filing an issue about this is that people can add to the list by
commenting on the issue. I don't really know what to do with the list, but if we
start making one then something can be done eventually, with no list, we can't
do anything.

Here is the beggining list:
OpenOffice.org
Calc
Mozilla
Thunderbird
Firefox
Sunbird
Gimp (Isn't this an acronyn?)
KDE
Linux
GNU
GNU/Linux
FSF
Konqueror
Koffice
AbiWord

Please add more words as you see fit.

I would like to be able to change the default area fill color of a shape that I
draw in Writer or Calc or Impress. Right now all shapes come up with Blue 7 (or
Blue 8, I don't recall) as the area fill color. I would like to be able to
change this.

Thanks.

There are two issues for a reason. This issue is to have the shortcut key added,
and it should be a defect, you are correct, because the spec file in the URL box
says that there should be one.

The other issue, 43146, is asking for an enhancement to return to the behavior
that was present in 1.1.4.

Do you see the difference. I filed two issues so that maybe at least this one
would be done soon. For me, for a lot of what I do, 2.0 is unusable because of
this issue.

I filed this issue a while ago, and it is so clear to me that I don't understand
some people opposition to it.

Question to mmp: Who is disadvantaged by the 1.1.x behavior?

The scenario provided (in the spec) is laughable. I have already elaborated on
this, so I won't repeat myself.

I am big fan of the arguments along the lines of OOo is not a format intended
for reading documents. Writer is text editor. There a readers for documents out
there. PDF is a good format, ebooks I guess work, but Writer is not really
intended for reading, it is for editing.

I think Daniel's point is also very good. Going to the top of a document sans
shortcut is SUBSTANTIALLY easier than finding where you left off.

I am not a big fan of the idea of making the feature document dependent. I think
it is interesting, but I don't want to have to remember everytime I make a
document to check the box. I suppose if I could edit my default template to have
that box checked, I would survive. :)

Mostly, I would like to have someone give me a real circumstance where the 1.1.x
behavior is harmful to productivity. I can give (and others have given you)
several examples of where the 2.0 behavior, even with a shortcut, hurts
productivity.

The only way I would say we could improve upon 1.1.x is to clarify the checkbox?

I mean, why is this feature okay for Calc and not Writer?

Sorry, I am rambling, but it is just so clear to me that this is a good feature,
something that propels OOo over MSO and a feature that will require me to keep a
copy of 1.1.4 on my computer for my editing work until 2.0 has an acceptable
feature.

At what point does it crash for anyone. I watched it and didn't crash.

So, what is the issue here? Is it that the crash recovery is broken, or is there
something wrong with the file or the save button? This seems very unclear.

Or, looking at the error, could there be a problem with the Visual C++ library
on the computer.

Did we get the file yet or any more info?

Marking as invalid until we can get more clarity on the problem or a copy of the
file.

With the template, I can not reproduce this with OOo 1.9.94 on Win XP.

Perhaps a win2k issue.

Works for me with 1.9.94 on Win XP.

Sound like it might be Win 98 Issue, or printer specific. Odd that it worked
before though.

Setting to P3 because there is a workaround.

Marking as worksforme.

Please update your printer driver as suggested and get the latest version which
is at least 1.9.95 and try again. If problem still persists, please re-open.

Confirmed in OOo 1.9.94 on Win XP.

I opened a random .sxw file in 1.9.94 and then did a Save As.. and names it
something else. The file saved (that is to say it made r.sxw) and like while it
was saving, OOo crashed. The document was not recovered and r.sxw was an empty
file that would open in OOo 1.1.4 but was, as I said, empty.

Changing OS to All.

This works for me with 1.9.94 with the default configuration.

Please give me step by step what you do.

I opened up 1.9.94 Typed in This is a testr. testr got underlined, I right
click set the AutoCorrect to test.

I then types testr on three more lines and it worked every time. I closed OOo
and reopened and it still worked.

I don't know what you mean shortcuts to paragraphs, but you should open a
separate issue if you want it evaluated.

If it stops working again, please detail exactly what you did to see that it
wasn't working. I don't know why there are two files. :(

Hopefully it is fixed for good!

Agreed, I didn't test it before, just wanted to mark the dup and have it
reevaluated.

Tested in 1.9.94 on Win XP and can't reproduce.

Okay, before I said I couldn't reproduce. Well, after some more experimentation,
it seems that OOo 1.9.94 is not importing custom animation from a PPT master
slide. If, in PPT, I open the custom animation in the task pane and the click
the copy effects to slide, and then save the file and reopen in OOo 1.9.94, the
animations are there.

That is why when I did a quick test before, not with the attached file, it
worked, because I didn't have my animations on a master, I had them on the
slide.

Changing the summary and the priority to P3, because it only affects animations
on a master and it is easily worked around.

1.9.79 is in NO way the latest beta. The latest beta is at least 1.9.93 and
maybe even higher now.

Now, my desktop worked fine. Maybe a little slow, but I don't think so. OOo is a
bit slower than PPT XP, but I don't know if that is an error.

Changing to P3 since this only affects laptops.

I'm trying to remember/decipher. The behavior of 1.9.95 is not the same as the
behavior in 1.1.4.

1.1.4 behaves as alvarezp2000 would expect, doesn't it? So, is this a
regression, or a planned change?

Okay, so (and stop me if I am wrong) you want Calc to issue an error report if
you try to add text to a number.

So, instead of '2.5 + 3 = 3, it should return #VALUE?

This is a feature request. I say this, b/c 1.1.4 has the same behavior as
1.9.94, so this is as expected. You want OOo to change its behavior, so this is
a feature request.

I changed the summary to reflect this as well.

If this is wrong, please repost and we can change it again.

The answer to your problem is never to open a new issue.

I am going to go back to 45196, confirm it, and up the priority.

Please restrict all comments to that.

Also, please make sure you indicate which version of OOo you use, not just Beta,
because every new snapshot is now the beta.
