Hi rainman01,

thanks for your comment - I also consider it quite annoying.
However, the issue is still alive, so I think no action needs to be taken by the
developers.
The version field only means that this is the version this problem _first_
occurred. The version number is not updated if new versions come out, because it
is interesting to know, since which versions the issue exists.

The issue is targeted to OOo 3.x, that's at least better than OOo later.
:-)
The only thing you can do is to vote for the issue, so that it gets higher
priority. A vote sum of 24 is already quite good, so there may be a good chance
that this will be solved rather soon - maybe in OOo 3.2?

Best regards, phil

Dear cornouws,

thanks ever so much for this hint!

I didn't know of this extension yet, and in fact it does exactly what I need!
Not only tables are perfectly compared now, but also changes in images are
shown.
Also, the comparison algorithm for normal text is better than the one of the
built-in comparison feature, which often shows whole text blocks as changed
instead of the individual word that was changed.

So thanks a lot also to the DeltaXML people!

I think this issue is resolved by this extension. :-)

Thanks again,
phil

Dear Jana,

I can fully understand your frustration, I have also lost much time due to OOo.

However, I believe that an unobjective rant about the problems will not help
much.

Also, keep in mind that this software is free. Nobody has forced you to use it.
If you do not like it, just use a different product.

Kind regards,
phil

@coila:
The old behaviour also created a lot of problems for people who do not
understand what file associations mean, so there definitely was a motivation.
Therefore just reinstating the old behaviour might not be the right solution
either.
For further information, the following user discussion might be helpful:

@thegadfly:

I completely agree that the bug discussed here should be fixed.

However, the choice of the drive where to install is a completely different
thing, and I cannot reproduce the problems that you encounter.
If you choose a custom install, you can choose a different drive to install to.
See the screenshot that I'll attach.

To be 100% sure, you may use an administrative install, that even allows you to
keep the old 2.x installation and run both versions in parallel.
You'll find information on that in the following OOo Wiki article:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Run_OOo_versions_parallel

Regards, phil

@abqbill: Sure, I completely agree. It is exactly what this issue is about, and
I wonder that still no target is defined despite the fact that there are 39
votes.

However, I assume aziem proposed the solution not to resolve this issue, but
rather as a workaround to solve the problem of mfurr in a short time frame.

I absolutely agree to steveorg.

Furthermore, the features in OOo do fullfill the same as an autosave function,
however it is defect in version 3.0.0.
Use version 2.4.2 and you are fine.
This function saves to a separate file, and can be recovered without problems
with the autorecovery function.

A simple autosave may be fine for some users.
However for other users it might be a problem. Imagine someone doing deletions
to his document that he wants to revoke. What if the document was autosaved?
Then he couldn't revoke the changes (unless he has a backup copy).
If an autosave to a separate file is made (like it is implemented now), then the
user just has to close the document without saving it, allowing him to get back
the original document version.

There will not be a hot fix for this.

You need to wait for release 3.0.1 which is planned for January:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease301

You could also use the developer snapshot, which includes the fix:
http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/new_ooo_dev_3_025
However, this entails the risk of other problems, as this is not a release
version.

As a workaround, you can manually save regularly.
Or you go back to version 2.4.2

@noop: I am not developer either. :-)
As to my understanding, the software structure does not allow hotfixes.
Even if it is a very small change in code, a recompilation is needed which
cannot be replaced by a hotfix.

Maybe someone with a better knowledge can explain the situation more accurately.

When using OOo 3.0 to open .ppt files exported from OOo2.x, text styles are
changed.
It does not occur with all presentations and may be related to the source of the
presentations (master slides created with PowerPoint?).

Opening in OOo 2.4.2 still works and gives the same result as when using MS
PowerPoint Viewer.
- Regression.

Seems to be cross-platform, see the discussion in
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11638
I will attach the two testcases reported there.

Certain text boxes in .odp presentation files saved with 2.x versions of OOo are
distorted when opening the .odp file in OOo 3.0 (final version = RC4):
The contours are changed and thus wrapped text appears completely changed.
Additionally, the affected text boxes cannot be dragged.

It does not occur with all text boxes, and especially it does not occur when
creating new text boxes with the standard layouts or with the text box tool in
2.4.1.
I could only reproduce it by copying one of the text boxes from an old
presentation (where the problem occurred) to a new one under version 2.4.1.

If I export to a .ppt file in 2.4.1 and open that in 3.0, it works fine.

It is not clear to me which properties of the text box leads to the behavior.
Maybe the text box was imported from a .ppt file initially - I cannot track that
anymore.

Thanks, jes, for the accurate description.
This is exactly the same behavior I see under Win XP as well.
That further supports my assumption that it is a cross-platform issue.
In 2.4.1 it works fine. == regression

Really quite a considerable bug, I'm astonished it hasn't even been confirmed
yet!

I tested it and found the following behavior:
Instead of the file saved for recovery (default: in folder C:\Documents and
settings\username\Application data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\backup), the last saved
file is recovered. Additionally, at the point of time of recovery, the file in
the backup folder is deleted!
That means that if OOo crashes, the workaround is to go to the backup folder and
copy the file to your user folder _prior the restarting OOo_.

I really hope this is going to be fixed in 3.0.1.
For most users, especially those not being technical, this is a serious
drawback!

I cannot reproduce this on my system (OOo 2.4.0 on Win XP Pro SP 2).
However, there seem to be more people encountering it as shows a
href=http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5672;this
thread/a on OUCV.

Also, I think a href=show_bug.cgi?id=75488issue 75488/a could be related
to this one (or even be a duplicate).

I tested it, embedding of fonts with restricted license works.

But I do not agree to change the behavior in the sort to make it impossible to
embed these type of fonts.
I think it may not be the decision of the software, but of the user whether he
does embed the font.
License restrictions may not apply in some countries, so it would be a drawback
if the software could not do it.

OOo could issue a warning when restricted fonts are to be embedded and could
leave the choice to the user.

Also, other PDF creator utilities do allow embedding restricted fonts as well,
which I see as a hint that the sole function of a software doing this is not
illegal as such.

However, I need to point out that I am not a jurist. So it may be a good advice
to discuss this matter with an industrial lawyer.

It's me again. ;-)

I just ran across a forum posting that seems to be linked to this problem:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5t=671

I tested my two test cases (EMF WMF import) as an export to SWF, again getting
distortions (i.e. moved elements) in the SWF file.

So I think these problems are linked to each other.

Let me know if I should open a separate issue on the SWF export.

I just ran across a similar problem when importing a chart from Excel as GDI
metafile.

The testcase I just attached shows the incorrect behavior:
If the chart image is cropped, the description text remains visible in the
exported PDF file.
If the same spreadsheet is opened with OOo Calc and pasted _as GDI metafile_,
then the problem does _not_ occur when cropping the image.

Also this behavior is identical in OOo writer.

Similar behavior occurs when importing figures from MATLAB in .emf format.
In the files that I just attached an import of an .emf file compared to an
import of a .bmp file is made.
Parts of the image are not cropped anymore when exported to PDF.
Also, the fonts are different after exporting to PDF (smaller) and the lines are
distorted. An effect which is also visible in the other testcase.
Is there a need to open a separate issue concerning the distortion of fonts and
lines?
BTW: The effects identically occur in writer when exporting to PDF.
