I've found a workaround for this issue. Maybe it'll help to implement this
enhancement!

1) open an empty text document
2) open the styles window
3) copy some graphics from the WWW, for example
http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/logo.gif
4) paste it into the empty doc (the styles window is still open). It'll anchor
to paragraph.
4) right-click, properties, type tab, choose anchor as character
5) see that vertical position is no longer relative to page or to margin, but
relative to base line or character or something of that kind
6) click OK in the properties window
7) look in the styles window and see that graphics style is selected
8) click the new style button at the right top of styles window
9) a menu will pop up; choose update style
10) Now if you try to modify the graphics style, you'll see that in the type
tab, the position is no longer relative to page or to margin, but relative to
base line or character or something of that kind.
11) repeat steps 3 and 4 - the image now inserts with anchor as character!!!
That's all. Enjoy.

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/Dmaths#comment-2209

I tried CmathOO
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/project/CmathOOo
It's buggy
1) police et taille des formules | set fonts for formulas in this document
2) OK
3) Redimensionement en cours ... | changing the formulas' fonts ...
4) BASIC runtime error. Object variable not set. Line 166, Col 103
(I already wrote to the developer with the problematic file, no reaction.)

I think Open Office Org should have this done as easily as for any other text.

If a document contains bookmarks and I open the insert bookmark window in Open
Office Writer, I see their list. No wonder that I want to know where they are.
Could there be a Go to button in the Insert bookmark window?

I was writing everything in my mathematical report in Times New Roman font...
Suddenly I discovered that university requirement is Arial font. I changed the
default style font easily, but I had several hundreds of formulas (equations)
in my document which were in Times New Roman. I see that I can't correct ALL
formulas in my document to another font yet.

1) I think this is a DEFECT, not an ENCHANCEMENT.

2) I think we should set higher priority to this issue... For example,
implement before next major release, or what?

I am sorry for my short obscure description. I'll try to be more precise:

Formulas can be inserted into documents by the Insert - Object - Formula
command. This command is available in all Open Office applications - Writer,
Impress, Draw, etc.

When a formula is inserted in a document, it can later be edited by double
click. However, single click would be faster. It could be a very useful option
for some students who write mathematical reports with lots of math equations in
them.

It would be great if the user could select entire document or its part and run
some command to change formulas' style in the selection, including:
- font size
- percentages of sizes for indexed, limits, functions, operators, text, etc.
- fonts (separate settings for variables / functions / numbers / text / serif /
sans-serif / fixed)
- color

Also, it would be great to extend this feature to an option of that the formulas
could automatically change
- their default font for numbers and variables and
- their default size
- their color
to match the style of their surrounding text every time it changes.

One specific requirement, for example.
The user can click at a place in formula and arrive to appropriate place in
code. The next thing a user wants to do is to select a part of formula by mouse
to copy it and to paste it into another place. Unfortunately, this can be done
only by selecting a part of CODE now - pretty uncomfortable.

1) create formula z = sqrt{x^2 + y^2} in O O writer - this can be easily done
by a newbie, just using the selection toolbar
2) get a wish to create another formula 2 sqrt{x^2 + y^2}
3) see that you can't do it otherwise than copying the sqrt{x^2 + y^2} thing
in the code or by doing the input through the selection toolbar a second time
4) see that you'll have either to learn TeX (awful thought for a new user) or to
do a lot of monotonous mechanical work
5) feel sad that copy and paste aren't practically available in Open Office
formula editor

Created an attachment (id=67492)
I had been using Windows 2000 on another machine for several years. Now, I
switched to Windows XP, because Windows 2000 is no longer supported. In my
opinion, Windows XP looks much less ugly in 256. The Microsoft designers have
gone mad, I think, and I am thankful for what they do in 256. Looks really very
much like Windows 2000!

I think this is a major importance feature. There are LOTS of users who use
formulas in their documents, and only a few of them CAN learn this TEX language.
It's pretty uncomfortable.

The UI shoult be intuitive! Assume that user is user, not developer. Working
with code should be a think a user CAN avoid.

Working with formulas in raw mode is one of the things why I feel not very in my
right mind when using Open Office Writer formula editor.

This means: when you type something with big height, these symbols should also
grow in height. For example, try inserting a formula like this:

{int{1 over 2 over 2}dx}

It will be somewhat uneasy to read.

I am not about HTML component, I am about borders. To be more precise, the
subcomponent is formatting.

Do you mean that the HTML engine of Open Office Writer is weaker than that one
of Firefox? Did you write OOWriter engine yourself? Can't you continue to write
it and implement this suggestion?

In MS Word, dotted borders for paragraphs exist since 2000, or maybe even
earlier. This is a really must-have.

There should be an option of typing math equations without TeX knowledge. Just
/ keystroke means fraction, ^ key means superscript, and you should see the
fraction and small text at the top, not these symbols. Something like Alt + S
for sum, Alt + I for integral, and mouse should be able to make selections of
parts of formulas, cut them, etc.

1 open the attached file
2 set style of page 1 to First Page using the style and formatting window (it
has page styles button at its top)
3 check that the style of page 2 is default (by clicking on it and seeing that
default is selected then)
4 insert - footer - default
5 type default footer
6 save the document in .DOC format (MS Word 97/2000/XP)
7 open it
8 the footer is absent

I know that I am warned about the deficiency of .DOC while saving:

This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP file format. Do you want to save the document in this
format anyway?
Use the latest ODF file format and be sure all formatting and content is saved
correctly.

But the DOC format supports headers and footers principally, and I would like
you to support DOC completely.

I agree. There really should be an option of default anchor of pasted images. It
usually is anchor to paragraph, but I most often use anchor as character.
This is a high priority issue, as many users need to copy images-formulas from
the Web into their documents, and formulas go as characters.

following reproduce it always:

1 open OO Calc
2 type =transpose(A1:A2) (without quotes) in B2 cell
3 press Enter key on keyboard to exit from the cell
4 double-click the B2 cell to edit again
5 replace : with ;
6 add ; (without quotes) at the end of the line
7 press Home key on keyboard
8 type (
it will be before the = sign
9 OO Calc crashes
