[framework-issues] [Issue 20370] Q-PCD MSInteroperability-3 3: embedd fonts into the document
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=20370 --- Additional comments from sergey_...@openoffice.org Thu Oct 1 16:05:44 + 2009 --- (excume me for my bad English) MS Word XP suggests several symbol sets for embedding. AFAIK user can embed: - nothing - all - all without system fonts - all used symbols - all used symbols without system fonts. I suggest other variant as main for OpenOffice: - all used Unicode blocks. You can see what is Unicode block with "gucharmap" program under GNU/Linux for example (you will need select "View"->"By Unicode Block" in menu). If we will embed all symbols then document size can be too big. If we will embed just used symbols then we will have problems with editing document in future. For example, some rare symbol from national alphabet or mathematical symbols that needed for editing can be lost. Embedding Unicode blocks is compromise between document size and symbols that will be available in the future. Please imagine that we write some mathematical document on Russian language. It will contain all symbols from Russian alphabet, some latin symbols, some greek symbols, some punctuation symbols and some math symbols. Unicode blocks for embedding can be follows: - Basic Latin - Latin-1 Supplement - Greek and Coptic - Cyrillic - General Punctuation - Arrows - Mathematical Operators - Supplemental Mathematical Operators Document size will not be very big. If we will edit this document in the future then it is high possibility that all symbols that we will need are already embedded in document. For example, we will able to change "≠" to "≢" even if "≢" was not used in original document. And we will able use "γ" even if original document used only "α" and "β". - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Writer (version 3.1) deletes text instead of picture. I can't create new document and repeat this bug in it. But I have good document where I can repeat this bug. I attach this document. Please open it and follow this steps: 1. Make panel "Рисование" ("Drawing"?) visible. 2. Set zoom to 360%. 2. Click to the arrow icon on this panel (picture selection mode). Arrow background should became violet. 3. You can see some graphics between to text lists. Select this graphics: - move mouse cursor to the top left corner of graphics; - press and hold left mouse button; - move mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of graphics; - unpress left mouse button. Now graphics should be selected. Writer draws 8 green squares around it. 4. Press "del" key to delete graphics. Graphics will not be deleted. I did not found direct phrases like "fonts embedding" in it. Please have a look. If Open Document specification really does not support fonts embedding - then OpenXML can be an example: http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-376.htm. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=20370 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sun Oct 26 16:03:19 + 2008 --- In some posts above we talk that font files that directly include license text is a good thing. I discover :-) that TTF font files can carry full license text (by non-standart way) and this is no necessarily to ask TTF format developers to add license fields into TTF specification. This is about Bitstream Vera Fonts (http://www.gnome.org/fonts/): "Note that the Vera copyright is incorporated in the fonts themselves. The License field in the fonts contains the copyright license as it appears below. The TrueType copyright field is not large enough to contain the full license, so the license is incorporated (as you might think if you thought about it) into the license field, which unfortunately can be obscure to find. (In pfaedit, see: Element->Font Info->TTFNames->License)." The technical details can be found here: http://developer.apple.com/textfonts/TTRefMan/RM06/Chap6name.html (table 42 "Name Identifiers", NameID codes 0, 13 and 14). We can see that fonts developers use "License" field for license text but this field "should be written in plain language, not legalese" according to specification because of "Copiright notice" field is too small. Future OpenOffice should know this trick. I surmise that TTF can have other formats. The situation with Type 1 fonts is not so good and far more compex. I found 3 file types related to Type 1 on my system: .afm, .pfa and .pfb. This was found in X11 font directory. It is possible that some other formats exists in CUPS, ghostscript and xpdf directories. The specification for .afm is here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/font/pdfs/5004.AFM_Spec.pdf It discribes only optional "Notice" field (on page 26) that can contain "Font name trademark or copyright notice". I view real .afm files on my machine and see short copyright info in "Comment" and "Notice" fields. I am not sure that specification for .pfa is this: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/T1_SPEC.PDF This specification mentions "Notice" field but not describes it (at least I did not found description). In real .pfa files I see short copyright info in comment (starting from "%%") and in "Notice" field. I did not found specification for .pfb format at this time. The CCF format for Type 1 also exists, specification is: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/5176.CFF.pdf It contains "Notice" and "Copyright" fields. Earlier versions of this document contained section 18 "Copyright and Trademark Notices" but it was removed according changelog. I did not found description of this fields in modern version of document. The .pfm files also exists in nature. The document (not specification AFAIK) describing this format is here: http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/font/5178.PFM.pdf It describes "dfCopyright" field in table 1 "Header". This field is "60 byte string, null padded" so it can not contain full license text but can contain license name (for example, "GPL + font exception"). I surmise that Type 1 fonts can have yet more formats. All this values works fine in most programs but cause message like "I18N: X Window System doesn't support locale "ru_RU.utf8" when starting from terminal emulator. Locale must be "ru_RU.UTF-8"! When I start OpenOffice 3.0 with this commands: export LC_ALL=ru_RU.UTF-8 soffice - there were no message about I18N and all filenames with cyrillic letters was OK! Now we talking about OO 3.0rc3. To rainerbielefeld (post at issue 94643) > Related to Issue 82628? Perhaps yes, perhaps no. I work with documents containigs cyrillic letters in OpenOffice 3.0 beta1 under Windows XP SP2 and OO opens documents without such problems. > DUP of Issue 89937? Yes, I forget about my own issue. Sorry :-) > Really only a WRITER problem? No, main OO open dialog looks problematic too. Please see at screenshot below. > Please attach a writer document containing a filename as string that can be > used to reproduce the problem. Sorry, I do not understand this request. Does this file needed because of problems with cyrillic letters in bugzilla? So, I did the next. I pack 3 files into tar.bz2 archive. 2 of this files have cyrillic letters in names. The system encoding during packing was utf8. 1 file has name "test.odt". This file contains names of all 3 files - "writer document containing a filename as string that can be used to reproduce the problem". You can unpack this archive and try to open this files. Please do this under GNU/Linux because Windows version of OO 3.0rc3 possible has not this bug or has it in different form as I note above. If licensing problems is so big at this stage - we can prolong this line and then next question will be: is flag "Print to file" in print dialog legal or illegal?.. > Then, about font files that directly include license text: that is the right approach. How do you think: what is better: private e-mailing to font formats developers with this request first or organizing community petitions without more ado? :-) I can try this if I will have a time. > Finally, it would be interesting to know *how* a font could be embedded by respecting OpenDocument 1.2 specification. I'm not a developer and I'm just curious. I do not know it for now also and just have hope that specification developers foresaw this. But even if fonts embedding was not foreseen by OpenDocument specification - its developers always can see how this feature realized in M$ OpenXML. For example, user of "liberation" fonts v1.0-1 must be located out of Cuba. Hyperbolic variant: is the font that can be used legally only at Moon free or not free? Other interesting thing is from "dejavu" fonts v2.24: "The above copyright and trademark notices and this permission notice shall be included in all copies of one or more of the Font Software typefaces." Does it mean that text of license of this fonts must be included in document that has this fonts in embedded form? The next thing. Many of people here say about "legal nightmare" that we will have if embedding fonts in OpenOffice documents will be implemented. But now OpenOffice can export documents to PDF. I do not know technical details, but it looks like resulting PDFs have embedded fonts. And AFAIK editing of PDFs feature will be implemented in future. Please note that OpenOffice does not show any warnings about legal problems when create PDFs. By the way. This is question to all people here who want OpenOffice without fonts embedding but want to use free software and free fonts. How do you send you documents to Windows users? I have a problem with this now. When I give an odt document to my colleagues - Windows users for editing, I give them also a distributive of OpenOffice + archive with fonts on USB flash drive + instructions how to install this fonts into Windows. The solution of this problem is using only "liberation" fonts family. This fonts has same metric that main Windows fonts and documents can be opened properly on Windows even if "liberation" fonts is not installed. But "liberation" family have no font with "times"-like view ("Liberation Serif" have same metric that "Times New Roman"), so limitation to use only this font family is very restrictive. The other problem I have is broken font that have different metric in different formats. Document that using this font in Type-1 format on GNU/Linux can not be transfered to Windows where this font is in TrueType format because an interval between text lines is different :-( To luctur: > However, even if fonts have the "Editable" or "Installable" bit set we still don't know nothing about its license. What about a new font format with embedded license? Or about petitions to current font formats authors with ask to add obligatory license text to font files in this formats? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [sw-issues] [Issue 90323] Incorrect table boundaries setting from "Table" popup window

Here are steps to reproduce the problem. I am using Russian version of OpenOffice, and will try to translate items names to English, but in English version they can be different. 1. Create new text document. 2. Select Table -> Insert -> Table from main menu of Writer. It should open "Table insertion" window. 3. In this window, uncheck "boundaries" checkbox and click "OK". It should create 2x2 table without borders ( or with invisible borders - terminology :-) ). 4. Select all this "invisible" table with mouse. "Table" popup window should be on screen. 5. Click to icon "boundaries" on this window (white rectangle with black borders and black trinagle at right of it). Window "..." with borders variants (matrix of 3x4 variants) should appear. Let talk about this matrix with coordinates y and x, x = 1 to 4 from left to right, y = 1 to 3 from top to bottom. Icons will have coordinats (y,x). Click on last variant (3, 4) - all boundaries visible (rectangle in which all boundaries are bold and with full bold "+" in it, this icon is at bottom right corner of "..." window). 6. Only external borders of table become visible. Internal borders ("+" inside table) will remain invisible. You can also select in invisible 2x2 table only left column, then click to "boundaries" on popup window "table", select icon with coordinates (3, 2). The middle horizontal line in left column of table will remain invisible. Regards, Sergey - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. How should it printed from OpenOffice without this feature? Yes, other way is exists: it is the option for disable background pictures as in MS Office. I think this option mean also auto-changing all font colors to appropriate values. I can't find such option in OpenOffice 3.0 beta. P.S. Negatives may be different. We may do "classic" inversion. And Sun n attached slide will be blue. Or we may do brightness inversion. Sun will be yellow, only shadows will be strange. I will attach example screenshot of brightness inversion. It can be important if we use colour printer. By the way: standart "brightness inversion" command in the GIMP works bad for example picture. I use the next method: break picture to 3 layers with YCbCrITU 709, model, inverse "luma-y 709" layer, make some correction by brightness curve and finally put this 3 layers back in one by YCbCrITU 709 model. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To pjanik: > 3.0 will have the functionality to provide dictionaries > as extensions. > I think we plan already to *remove* dictionaries from the instsets and move them > to extensions... (sorry for my bad English) So, the most users will download instset, try spellchecking, surprizing that it does not work, go back to openoffice site, download and install dictionaries, think and say to other people that MS Office is better. Or go back to MS products without trying to solve the problem, as previos commentators sayed. This situation is not hypothesis. I had try to give OO to windows users and it was what they really did/sayed. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. [framework-issues] [Issue 20370] Q-PCD MSInteroperability-3 3: embedd fonts into the document
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=20370 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Apr 19 15:24:26 + 2007 --- 1. Sorry for my bad English :) 2. IMHO fonts embedding should be a main task for next major release of OpenOffice. Or one of main tasks :) 3. Because of problem is very complex and difficult but also is very important - i think a "half-solution" can be implemented for the first time. We can have an option "attach font files to the document". It will copy all used font files into document archive subdirectory, but will not use this files. This option can prevent a big part of "archives restoring nightmare". Also, users in future always will know: if they do not have some font for document - they can open the document as usual ZIP archive and get needed fonts. Not all fonts can be installed in all OSes, but IMHO this be better that nothing. Also, this can soften licensions problems: we can say distribute fonts in document, but not fully compile fonts with document. Or we can't - i am not an jurist :-) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. In new versions of OpenOffice on toolbars we can see "half- transparent" magenta buttons, not relief, as in previos versions. Exactly same as in M$ Word XP. Who made plagiarism in this case - M$ or community? :-) If community - IMHO it is not very good from moral point of view to copy so non- fundamental ideas, one by one... Now, my classification of M$ styles :-) Let's see on Win 95 GUI. New, full-relief GUI was copyed by all - from MacOS to me on BASIC :) . In Win 95 was one program with other interface - IE. It had toolbars with buttons, which has relief only under mouse pointer. IMHO this was M$ GUI experiment N1. In Win 98 this experiment became a mainstream. All toolbars was like as in old Win 95 IE. And other (N2) M$ experiment IMHO was M$ Office 97 gradient window titles. In Win 98 its became a law. In Win 98 we can see experiment N3 - "web integration". No relief, but background colors; no buttons, but hyperlinks. This practics was in Win Me and 2000, but in XP it was morphing to meet a new style - style of Win XP. No strong metal, nearly to games. This was made without any experiments (N4). And like in Office 97, in Office XP we can see a new GUI experiment - N5. This is an new idea based on N3 - non-relief, non-metall, more "paper", more "real documents - like" interface. The part of it is wonderfull violet non-relief buttons, the most viewable part of new theme. And OpenOffice copyed this part of experimental interface - without any other parts!.. And in OpenOffice 1.9.77 we have a summa of non-summable: Win 98 pull- down "metall" menus, GTK2-style toolbar handlers, KDE2-style toolbar backgroung gradient, "non-strong" icons, and "paper" buttons! I think OOffice should think more about "integrity" of GUI theme. If "metal" Win 98 - so all GUI parts looks like Win 98, if "paper" M$ Office XP - so all GUI parts in "paper" style. If not copying M$ at all - create a new theme, and apply it to all GUI No, I want not say that OOffice 2 has bad look, no - it has good look; Office XP buttons has good view on gradient panels near new icons, really. !!! ALL THIS IS MY imho, of course !!! WBR, Sergey - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42687 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Feb 19 16:18:31 -0800 2005 --- I create an example file. In this file I wrote text with ISOCPEUR font (in Writer under Windows). I made a screenshot. After this, I reboot to Linux and open file. The font symbols where lost and text was shown with other font. I made a screenshot. In this example I use cyrillic and Latin letters, and OpenOffice found appropriate symbols under Linux in other font. But if font in Windows will have unicum symbols, which has no has OpenOffice under Linux, information will be loss. So, now Writer documents is not good portable... And sorry for my confusion... I wrote what bug is in Impress, but not in Writer. Bug is in Impress and Writer, there are no differences. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
