Whenever I install a new version of OO, I am given three options: register now,
register later, do not register. I believe there should be another option: am
already registered, or something along that line.

If I have a file where the last item I typed in was a footnote number and then
Save that file for later use, I often find that when I return to that file and
start typing, the text comes in as subscript - evidently from the footnote
number. I have to manually switch to normal type before proceeding.

I prepared a very simple file in 3.2.1 and saved it as a DOC file (my default).
When I tried to open it in the Dev program, I was given a message that it is
Read Only, even though I had closed the 3.2.1 program first. This happened with
every file I tried.

When importing documents from Version 3.2.1, they appear with the boundaries
lines visible, and there is no way to get rid of these. Clicking on View does
not show a check mark next to Text Boundaries and clicking on it does nothing.

I often have to use a double quote mark followed by a single quote mark. When I
have OO set to smart quotes, the single quote mark is always a closing other
than an opening quote mark.

I find that when a footnote number comes at the end of a line the text is put at
the end of the line, and the footnote number appears all by itself on the next
line. That would seem to be totally wrong. I believe that the footnote number
should be treated as if it were part of the word preceding it, so that the word
(or part of it) is moved to the next line, along with the footnote number.

Three times today OO closed by itself, and when I tried to retrieve my file it
was locked by another user. I've deleted the temporary file in each case (the
lock file) but that hasn't helped. Nor can I delete all three files involved,
as they are locked.

My only solution has been to Copy the file involved and work with a copy - which
works normally. In each case I've lost a few minutes' worth of work, as I have
my backup set for every ten minutes.

It's really frustrating.

Can there be a shortcut key combination that I'm hitting without realizing it?
If that is the case, shouldn't I be asked if closing the file is what I want? On
the other hand, the fact that the lock document remains would seem to indicate
that the file was not closed.

I finally rebooted and restarted OO. It immediately told me that the problem
file needed to be recovered, which I allowed the program to do. What I got was
the file as it had been a few days ago (I'd had continued working using a
different filename). I was now able to delete (finally!) the problem file, and
to have access to the filename again - which I need for a file sequence of a
book.

This has happened to me a few times. As I am typing, the program closes, and I
need to retrieve it from the document directory.

Here is where the problem begins. When I try to retrieve the document in OO, it
is ignored and nothing happens - even though it's on the list of files in the
directory.It refuses to open up.

Furthermore, that same file can be opened in MSWord or WordPerfect.

To add to the confusion, if I rename the file, it still refuses to open in OO,
BUT if I use copy and save as it as copy of Filename, OO will open it. It is
totally a mystery to me.

I had to reinstall OO 3.1. While the general English US spelling checker works,
the user-defined one (standard.dic) is simply ignored by the program. I checked
that the words in it are indeed my hundreds of added words, but when I run a
spell check, it totally ignores the words stored in the list. I checked the
location of the list, and it's in the right place. Also, if I add a new word, it
indeed goes into the same standard.dic, and the next time I ran a spell check
the new words is recognized - although all the old ones are not.

If I'm editing a document and have moved down with my cursor to read further in
the document, if there is then an automatic save, after the save the cursor is
automatically moved back by OO to an earlier place in the document. This is very
frustrating, and is, I believe, a major defect.

If I find that if I number a paragraph a and then the next b and the next
c, the one after that is automatic, and is always ci - and indented, unlike
the first three. The one after that is cii. I have failed to see what causes
this or how to stop the automatic numbering from taking place.

I just downloaded 3.1 and installed it, I assume over the previous (3.0)
version. Indeed, the new version migrated items like my unique file locations.
It did not, however, migrate:
a) My name and organization (at the beginning of the setup)
b) My recent documents list.

I've used 2.4 for some time. In the Options, under Path there is a way to set
the path for my documents, as to where one's documents are to be saved. 3.0
beta does not seem to have that option - a vital one - unless it was placed
elsewhere, where I did not notice it.

If I am working on editing a document (as opposed to a new document), and I have
an automatic Save kick in every few minutes, after the Save I will most often
find that the cursor is now in an entirely place, and I need to scramble to see
where I was up to. This is very irritating, and that's why I refer to it as a
Defect rather then an Enhancement.

I am attaching 3 files:
a) Hagadah1.wpd
b) Hagadah1.doc
c) Hagadah1a.doc

Hagadah 1.wpd was created about 15 years ago, using WordPerfect 4.2. I imported
it into WordPerfect 11, and Saved it as a Word document (Hagadah1.doc). When
trying to open this into OO 2.3.0, it bombed totally.
I then opened Hagadah1.doc into MS Word (2003?), where it opened with no
problems. When I then Saved it from MS Word as a Word document (Hagadah1a.doc),
OO had no problem opening it.

Note that all the slash-letter combinations were used for formatting in those
prehistoric times.

I also tried this with other files, with the same problem.

Sometimes (as in attached file) I cannot put italics in a footnote. Trying CTRL
I doesn't work, and nor does clicking on the Italics icon in the toolbar. I CAN
get it to work if I first type the word, SELECT it, and then press CTRL I or the
icon. This is sometimes a problem, but other times not.

In order to create a letterhead that can be used at all times, I set one up and
then used a utility to make the file Read Only. Now, when I call up the file,
I am unable to write to it. I have to remove the Read Only attribute to be
able to use the file, but then it is valueless as a standard template.

All it is is a simple letterhead, which I set to Read Only. When I opened it, no
cursor showed, and it was impossible to modify it. My understanding of Read
Only is that you cannot save it under the same name, but can modify it.

I'm sending the file along.

I wrote about this once before, but it could not be reproduced. Now I know why.
My problem was that even though OO Write was set to open up with the cursor
where one left off, it always opened with the cursor on the top. The team could
not reproduce this problem. Now I know why. The feature does indeed work, but
only if one works in ODT format. I am forced to work in DOC format, and there
that feature is not implemented. (It is implemented, though, within MS WORD.) It
would be nice if the coding could be extended to have that feature work in DOC
format as well, so that people could work painlessly without having to lose this
feature.

When one clicks on File|Open, a box opens up to type in the filename. A nice
feature is that as one types the first letters, OO shows the files which begin
with those letters.
I do have one suggestion. Let's say I have a few files named as follows:
TESTING100
TESTING200
TESTING300
and no other files with that format.

If I type TESTING3 and I press Enter, nothing happens, because no file matches
TESTING3. I would like to suggest that if the person presses Enter at that
point, AND NO OTHER FILE MATCHES THAT TEMPLATE, OO should open that file, even
without the added two digits (00 in this case).

When I go to File | Printer Settings | Properties, the menu that comes up for my

itself are in English.

I tested equivalent menus in MS Word and WordPerfect 11, and in both cases the

Right now, if I want to restart footnote numbering, I have three choices: per
page, per chapter, or per document. Sometimes, I would like to restart the
footnote numbering in the middle of a document, for whatever reason, but there
is no such possibility. I would like to have an option that restarts the
numbering at wherever the cursor is at the time.

I just downloaded the latest 2.1 beta, and found that the same document which I
set at 130% for viewing in 2.0.4 needs to be set at 165% in the beta to
approximate the same viewing size.

When trying to modify the keyboard, if one chooses the Category Navigate, two
of the choices are go right and character left. Each moves the cursor one
space in the required direction. For consistency, they should both be Go
Right/Left or both Character Right/Left respectively. That would eliminate
confusion.

If I save a document, where the last character in the document was a footnote,
and I then close that document, if I later open the document and go to its end
and start typing, the typing starts in superscript mode (a holdover from the
footnote). I then have to manually change to normal. It would seem to me that
this should not be necessary, and that the font should automatically be in
normal mode in such case.

Right now, whenever I spell-check and want to add a word, I then have to click
on where I want to add the word (i.e., which dictionary). It would be great if
there could be a setting in Options as to which dictionary should be the
automatic default. This way, all I would need to do would be to click on add,
without having to specify which dictionary.

If one makes a correction of a text and then keeps on reading downward -
possibly even a few screens later - if one then uses CTRL-S to Save the
document, Writer moves the screen to wherever the last change was made, rather
than leaving it where the person was editing it. This is very disconcerting when
one is busy editing.

It would be great if there was some way (a hot-key?) to move between footnotes -
up and down by number, rather than having to leave the last footnote on the
page, go down the text to the next page, and then enter the next page's footnote
section. This would greatly facilitate editing footnotes. Along the same lines,
it would be great if one could specify by number which footnote he/she wishes to
enter, and be taken there immediately. (Is this feature present, and I
overlooked it?)

Because my LCD screen works best in 1280 x 1024 mode, I run Writer with the Zoom
set at 150%.

Whenever I open any document, it opens with the document very much to the right,
with part of the text on the right cut off. I realize all I have to do then is
to shift the document to the left.

It would seem to me to be more logical for all documents to open with the text
part in the middle of the screen.

Even though I had Selected only a part of my text and wanted to use Replace
only on that part of it, when I clicked on Replace all the replacement
replaced everything in the entire text. It would seem to me to be intuitive that
if a part of the text is Selected, Replace All should only work within that
Selected text and not the whole text. Otherwise, one has a problem in replacing
within a sub-set of the whole document, and must do so manually for each item.

I just noticed something. My computer crashed and rebooted as I was writing a
file with Writer. When I went to OO, it asked if I wanted to recover the file I
was working on. I said yes and it recovered the file, and THIS TIME the cursor
was at the bottom, where I had been up to. Why can't I get the files to open up
with the cursor where I left it when I just ask to open a file? It's really
frustrating. I'm wondering if my new information will help.

I would probably feel less frustrated if this was something that had never
worked. Th fact is that it had worked and something broke it, and now I can't
see how to fix it.

In OO 2.0, it's under Tools | Options | OpenOfficeOrg | View.
Toward the top left there is a Restore lavel, and unser it there is a checkbox
for Editing View.

This is what the OO Help file says about this setting:
Restore
Editing view
Specifies whether to restore the last used document view in OpenOffice.org.
Writer documents always open on page 1.
Many view properties valid when the document was last saved will be restored.

Yes, I know that Shift-F5 works.

And yes, I know that when I used to open files they would open at the cursor.
The point is that that has simply stopped working (in my case), even though the
Restore Editing View is checked.

This happened to me some time ago and remained not working for a long time, and
then it rectified itself (I don't remember what changed - maybe an install of a
later version).

The point is that at least for me, even though the Restore Editing View is
checked, it does stick.

Yes, I filled in User Data (name, last name, initials, country) when I installed
the program years ago (since upgraded from 1.x to 2.0.3). I just checked and saw
that my name indeed still appears under Tools | Options | Open Office Org |User
Data.

When I went to Insert | Fields |Other, and it asked for UserName, it inserted
my name into the document.

I'm not sure if this is a defect.

A number of times, as I've typed text, I found that the cursor did not move even
though I had pressed the Space bar, but then when I started the next word, the
space and the beginning of the new word appeared.
If I kept on typing, I would often then find that after just a few words on a
line - in the middle of my sentence - the words on the line would be stretched
across the entire line (e.g., if this happened after 3 words, there would be one
left, one center, one right), and the next line would continue on then.

The only way I've found to solve it is to copy a few lines, move them to another
word processor, and then cut-and-paste back.

It seems to me that MAYBE I'm hitting a key combination that makes the text of
the paragraph fully justified, to fill the entire line. I haven't found any such
key combination that would do this.

Sometimes as I look through the thesaurus I see a word which might be proper,
but I want to check more options and go on to other screens. I might eventually
want to move back to that original word, but doing so is very difficult to even
get back to it. It would be most useful if there could be a back button in the
thesaurus box which will allow a person to retrace his/her steps to earlier
screens. By the same token, another button would allow a person to move
forward so that the movement can be both ways.

I see it as something like the back and forward buttons on Internet browser
programs.

If I am writing in the default color (black) and switch to another color, I find
it almost impossible to switch back to black. I have tried using Esc to shut off
the color palette, the pull-down menu to switch to black (and even though the
color underneath the Color icon is black, the program still types in the new
color).

I have gotten to the point that the only way I can deal with it is to type
everything in black, then select the text I want, and then change the color for
that selected text to the new color. I would have expected the color change to
be like Bold, etc., that one can simply turn it on and off easily.

That is clearly not the way it should work. Or am I doing something wrong or is
it indeed a bug?

different line spacing),the selected passage shows those changes temporarily,
until (for example) you move to another font. This way, you can see immediately
what the change would look like and it makes it easier to decide if you indeed
want that change.

This seems to me to be a very worthwhile feature to add.

This has happened to me a number of times. In Writer, going from Tools | Options
| OpenOffice Org. | View, I have the box marked Editing View checked.
According to the OpenOffice.org 2.0 Writer Guide (p. 25), when Editing View is
checked, when opening a file, it should open at the place the cursor was
located when you previously closed the document.

I have the box checked, and yet - suddenly - OO now insists on opening each
document with the cursor at the top of the document.

I've tried unchecking, rebooting, and then checking the box, but nothing has
helped.

I can also note that sometimes this feature has reactivated itself without my
doing anything.

This is a long-standing problem that keeps reoccuring at intervals.

I have OO installed on my home computer, and I am the only one who uses it. Thus
when I open a file, I am (by definition) the last user. I nevertheless have
had the problem periodically.

Thanks for the tip, though!

When Windows unexpectedly reboots while one is in the midst of an OO file and
one then re-enters OO, the program asks if the person wants to recover the file
that was being worked on. It would seem to me that in almost all cases that is
exactly what the person wants.
I would accordingly suggest that in such a case OO should automatically activate
the recovery module, and start OO with that file open again.
If the person doesn't want the file at that point, all he/she needs to do is to
close it.

I think the problem might be that my dictionary file (or link to it) is missing,
because when I start a new document and type a common word, the Thesaurus shows
only that word and no synonyms. I don't know what files to look for, though.

The attached file has three lines. If I have the first two lines alone, I can go
to any word and activate the Thesaurus. Once the third line is added, the
Thesaurus becomes inactive for the rest of the document.

In other words, something in the third line is making the thesaurus gray out.

You can test by deleting the third line and then replacing it.

OK - I'm using Windows XP SP2. These are the steps I take:

I Select a word, making sure that it is only the word, with no spaces before or
after. I then press CTRL-C for Copy.

I move the cursor directly next to the end of another word and press CTRL-V. It
invariably puts a space between the last word and the present word.
If I place it next to a space after a word, I get two spaces between the two
words.

I just tried something else - I tried the same thing in WordPerfect and Notepad
- no extra space, BUT in MS Word I get an extra space!

footnote, something which both MS Word ^F and WordPerfect have.

If a word with a capital letter is misspelled and the spelling checker repairs
it, the capital letter is lost.

As an example, let's say I have the following:

Nowe is the time.

The spelling checker stops at Nowe and offers now as a choice. Selecting
this choice yields now is the time.

It should automatically check the case and preserve it.

After writing to the Macro Express people, I believe the problem is theirs. It
seems that in Macro Express one can select an EXE file to be activated by a
specific macro, but Open Office needs both SOFFICE.EXE and SOFFICE.BIN to be
activated. They promise that in a future version Macro Express will also allow
one to specify a BIN file. I believe we can thus close this issue.

My computer just rebooted as I worked. Even though I had Autorecovery set for

was identical to the BAK file. This is not the first time this has happened, and
each time is painful.

Another thought: I looked in my default directory for my file and then in my

Could there be another place where I could/should have looked for the auto

This was reported by me previously, and was closed after it was supposed to
have been remedied. Unfortunately, it's not so.

I find that when I try to use Macro Express (www.macros.com) to try to arrange a
macro which will work only with OO 2.0 (unlike 1.x, where there is no problem),
it simply does not take. Only if a define a macro in Macro Express as being
universal, (i.e., to work in all programs) does it take in OO - but then I
have a problem that it takes in every other program as well, which I don't
want.

I've been using Macro Express for years, and OO 2.0 is the first program that I
have found which will not work when I specify OO as the specific program for
which it is to be used.

I took the same identical file (about 230 pages of English text, with no
graphics, etc.), which totalled about 150 Meg in OO and over 500 Meg in MS Word
and even more in WordPerfect. To open the file directly in Word or WordPerfect
took 1-2 seconds. In OO it took about 8 seconds. The same is true for Saving the
file.

I'm not sure if this is a defect or is by design. When I Select a word, Copy the
selection, and then Paste it elsewhere, the Paste invariably adds a space before
the word I wanted to paste. Now, since in most cases I have already typed a
space after the previous word before pasting, I wind up with two consecutive
spaces. I don't remember this as a problem until now. In any event, I find it
most annoying.

Let me explain in case the above isn't clear:
Let's say I have the words: The big dog has aspace, and I then Cut the word
collar from another place and Paste it after the space, the result will be
The big dog has aspacespacecollar.

It would be nice if the user could have an option to allow him/her to
automatically have the th (6th) or rd (3rd) after a numeral
automatically changed to superscript.

I just updated from 2.0 to 2.0.1, and found a few problems:
a) My icons on my desktop to OO no longer worked, and I had to create new ones.
b) The program asked me if I wanted to update my data from 1.1.5, rather than
from 2.0.
c) When I go into HELP, I'm told its OO 2.0, with no indication that indeed it
is now 2.0.1.
d) In a move from 2.0 to 2.0.1, IMHO this should all be automatic, without any
questions being asked.

It's worse than I feared! The transfer to 2.0.1 took all my settings from 1.1.5
rather than from 2.0. Thus I found - under most recent files files that I had
dealt with months ago in 1.1.5.

I'm afraid to find out what other settings it took from 1.1.5 rather than from
2.0.

quick starter to load quick starter.

I believe this setting should be transferred automatically, to be whatever the

A basic question I have for this and other issues: If I'm told it's fixed, as
this issue was, would that mean that if I download the latest 2.0 build it will
have the fix in it, or does it mean that I have to wait? And if so, until what
point?

Thanks,

And further along the same lines: Let's say I have a certain word which is
italized and I decide that I want to capitalize the first letter (or the
reverse: switch the first letter to lower case), the logical way (IMHO) is to
Select the letter and then type the reverse - i.e., capital instead of lc or lc
instead of capital. While OO will make the change, it will also change the first
letter to unitalicized. The point is that if a selected letter is replaced in
such a way, its attributes should be retained.
I know that there are other ways of doing this, like switching the case, but my
way is IMHO the most intuitive way, and it just doesn't work.

It would be neat if the spelling checker would flag the same word if it is
repeated twice in a row, which sometimes happens when one forgets he has already
typed the word. In other words, if I wrote I am am going, it would flag am
am.

When running the spelling checker, if I hit a word whose spelling I want to
change - and I want to make this change for all other references in this
document (e.g., a proper name which was misspelled), I go into the box which
shows the questioned word in red and make the appropriate change. I have tried
to press Change All after that, but this doesn't take, and I keep getting
the same word highlighted. I think that if a person makes any change in the
spelling of a word within the spelling box, either the Change All should work
or (less preferable) the Change All button should be grayed out.

If I take a text with a standard font and want to add in a word which is
italicized between two standard font words which are already there, I turn on
italics, type the word, and then turn off italics. Doing so, though, removes the
italics from the word I've just typed. I find what I need to do is after typing
the word, to use an arrow key or the cursor to move away from the word, and thus
preserve the italics - or to first type the word and then italicize it.

To me, this is counter-intuitive, because if I am typing new text the normal way
to type is to turn on italics, type the word/s, and then turn off italics.

I assume the same applies to Bold and Underline.

What I mean is that let's say I have a text: The dog jumped, and I want to add
the word quick in italics after the word The, this problem arises.

As much as I can see it, the option to collate pages when printing needs to be
reset each time one wants this. I generally prefer to have all my printing jobs
collated. I suggest that there be a setting, in setting up the printer, to
decide whether the default should be to collate or not to collate pages when
printing documents.

While I assume that somewhere there must/should be a setting for footnote
formatting, it is not evident anywhere that I can find it.
As an example, I would like to have control as to whether there should be a line
dividing the text above and the footnote below.
I have noticed that all my documents in 2.0 have such a line, whereas those I've
imported from 1.5 do not have such a line, and I can't figure out where the
setting (if any) is to determine whether or not such a line should exist.

After writing a footnote, when one clicks on its number one is returned to the
footnote number in the text proper. However, the cursor is now situated directly
before the footnote number. Wouldn't it be more logical to have the cursor now
AFTER the footnote number, so that the person can pick up writing his or her
text? Right now, one has to manually move it across before starting to work
again.

It would be nice if there could be some easy way, after writing a footnote, to
be able to go back to the point one was in in the text before entering the
footnote. For example, a button on a taskbar that would bring one back in the
text to just beyond the footnote number.

When I try to use the English Thesaurus (for example, by using CTRL-F7 or
through the menu) the first time, the thesaurus menu comes up, shows the word,
but does not show any synonyms. I even used a simple word like nice, and the
list was blank. (In 1.1.5 there were many choices). The second time I try to use
the thesaurus without closing OO, the hyphenation line is simple grayed out.
When I close and reopen 2.0, the same 1-2 cycle starts over.

I checked that the .idx and .dat files are present in the 2.0 Share folder. I
did note that while the 1.1.5 .dat file is 3000K, the 2.0 is about 18,000 K.

Right now, when one goes to Format| Change Case, there are two choices:
Uppercase and Lowercase. I'd like to suggest a third choice: Change case,
which will change whatever case it is to the other one. This would make it easy
to program a simple macro which will automatically change the case of the
selected item. Maybe this is possible right now using macro programming, but for
someone with very limited macro programming experience - like me - this might be
an impossible task.
