@chcd:

Time machine is basically an external hard drive that Apple sells
Mac OS can work with that external drive, scheduling automatic backups.

Correction to avoid irritations/misunderstandings:

That statement of you is not quite correct so far. Don't mess Time Machine (the
convenient backup service of MacOSX) with Time Capsule (the optional and not
compelling needed hardware drive offered by Apple). Time Machine is an integral
convenient part of MacOSX but optional service to automatically let backup the
whole system on a regulary basis.

You can use Time Machine with basically ANY external hard drive. You MAY use
Apples own offered external hard drive named Time Capsule for that job, but
you don't NEED (or are urged) to use that hardware -- you can use instead ANY
external Non-Apple HD (minimum capacity should ideally be equal to or greater
than the system's HD capacity) for that automatic backup job via Time Machine
that you want. You even can use Time Machine over a network and use a foreign
(meaning: Non-Apple HD) remote network drive, that is suitable prepared for that
job.

@chcd:

Agreed, concerning the problems and can of worms with reverting to an older Java
installation.

and then OO.org, which didn't receive notifications
until the end users notice the problems.

Maybe because they have slept and have been uninformed? And didn't seem to read
and follow neither the Developer Release Notes Apple has regulary enclosed with
its Java Previews in its free (!) ADC Download area since over a year nor the
since month public available statements of Mike Swingler, Java Runtime Engineer,
Apple Inc.?

The OOo team/Sun/Oracle may have known since month all about this and all about
this potential risk and potential trouble -- at least since February 2010 -- and
could have changed its Java detection code early enough to what Apple recommends
since over a year. Please read my comments and links to this bug, especially my
two links from Oct 24 23:38:50 to Apples java-dev Mailinglist entries from
February 2010:

http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2010/Feb/msg00132.html
http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2010/Feb/msg00150.html

Curious, that NeoOffice is NOT in trouble caused by this recent Java update,
because the NeoOffice team has obviously changed and adapted its JRE detection
code early enough (many month or years ago). This is, what they say to this
whole mess:
http://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forumsfile=viewtopicp=60996#60996

I think, this issue, this mess, could have been totally avoidable. And it's not
Apple to blame on this in the first place but OpenOffice/Sun/Oracle. It's very
awkward and puts a bad light onto OpenOffice/Oracle (QA?), and it is grist to
the mills of forks like LibreOffice and NeoOffice and gives the user/Mac user
once more a reason to prefer or switch over to LibreOffice/NeoOffice. Or they
flee into the arms of Microsoft and use their MS Office.

Please, such kinds of issues like this should never happen again. Because this
particulary issue has been so foreseeable, avoidable and finally is so
dispensable. This issue should be a warning sign to improve QA and to better
hear and look what's going on on the platforms -- especially relating the Mac
platform (including better platform integration and adherence/impementation of
the platform-specific Human Interface Guidelines).

Where are the observable results of Oracle's promises to more foster Sun's
heritage with more developers and more money? Changing just icons ist not
enough.

Maybe these following two postings (and the thread around them) from February
2010 on Apples Mailinglist java-dev by Mike Swingler, Java Runtime Engineer
Apple Inc., could be also helpful to find a proper solution:

FYI: QA1170 updated for /usr/libexec/java_home
http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2010/Feb/msg00132.html

Re: FYI: QA1170 updated for /usr/libexec/java_home
http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2010/Feb/msg00150.html

And if does not suffice, then ask on Java-dev or email Mike Swingler personally
to help out.

Maybe helpful for a proper solution in OpenOffice:

Please read and pay attention to what Apple tells in its recent Release Notes to
this recent Java Update:

Apple Developer: Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 and 10.5 Update 8 Release Notes
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/Java/JavaSnowLeopardUpdate3LeopardUpdate8RN/Introduction/Introduction.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40010380-CH1-SW1

cite
The location of the Java SE 6 runtime home has changed to
/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk/Contents/Home. JDK bundles
provided via the Developer package, developer previews, and 3rd party JVMs
should be installed in /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines or
~/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines. Developer previews of Java can now be
installed and uninstalled without affecting the system JVM(s).

and

Subsubsection Java IDEs
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/releasenotes/Java/JavaSnowLeopardUpdate3LeopardUpdate8RN/NewandNoteworthy/NewandNoteworthy.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40010380-CH4-DontLinkElementID_5

cite
In testing, some Java IDEs have shown problems navigating into the new JDK
bundle structure, and persisting the location of the new JDK bundles. Some IDEs
may have to change how they prompt users to locate a JVM on Mac OS X, and should
ideally present a list of JVMs generated from /usr/libexec/java_home --xml,
which outputs each discovered JVM, and orders them according to the user's order
in Java Preferences.
/cite

Also pay attention to the following comment to this issue (and such proposed
workaround like simply symlinking the JVM location) by one core developer of
NeoOffice, where this issue is also discussed but an non-issue, because
NeoOffice seems to detect the Java JVM another way (maybe the
official-and-recommended-by-Apple way?) than OpenOffice:

Apple Developer: Technical QA QA1170: Important Java Directories on Mac OS X
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#qa/qa2001/qa1170.html

cite
Q: I am porting a Java product to Mac OS X. What are the equivalents for
directories and paths common to JDK installations on other platforms?

A: Since a JDK is preinstalled on every copy of Mac OS X, the location of the
Java VM may vary, but can be found using tools built into the OS. User input
should never be required to locate Java-related paths and directories.

Java Home

Many Java applications need to know the location of a $JAVA_HOME directory. The
$JAVA_HOME on Mac OS X should be found using the /usr/libexec/java_home command
line tool on Mac OS X 10.5 or later. On older Mac OS X versions where the tool
does not exist, use the fixed path /Library/Java/Home. The
/usr/libexec/java_home tool dynamically finds the top Java version specified in
Java Preferences for the current user. This path allows access to the bin
subdirectory where command line tools such as java, javac, etc. exist as on
other platforms. The tool /usr/libexec/java_home allows you to specify a
particular CPU architecture and Java platform version when locating a
$JAVA_HOME.

Another advantage of dynamically finding this path, as opposed to hardcoding the
fixed endpoint, is that it is updated when a new version of Java is downloaded
via Software Update or installed with a newer version of Mac OS X. For this
reason, it is important that developers do not install files in the JDKs inside
of /System, since the changes will be lost with subsequent updates by newer
versions of Java.

To obtain the path to the currently executing $JAVA_HOME, use the java.home
System property.
/cite

Apple Manpage to java_home:
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/java_home.1.html

How does OpenOffice determine $JAVA_HOME so far? This official and recommended
way? When not this recommended (because most flexible and future-safe) way, why
not? Maybe that is the way NeoOffice does it (and has no troubles)? Maybe a good
starting point for a fix of the issue in OpenOffice?

I want to bring to your mind ans attention, that this bug still is unfixed!

The dialogs still have a pinstripe background, the window-frame areas still are
white instead of default gray.

Please tend to the

http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGWindows/XHIGWindows.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/2961-TPXREF10

!

I quote again and stress:

All window-frame areas have a _gray_ gradient surface. In the window body,
content views (such as text or column views) display a white background by
default; the surrounding window-body background is a shade of _light gray_.

Not white or pinstripe as seen yet...

Please be geared to the look of the menus and windows of Leopard and Snow
Leopard and the default proposals (Textured window look instead of the
old-fashioned and *very* outdated Pinstripe window look) of their Interface
Builder for Cocoa applications.

See also:
Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Window Appearance
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGWindows/XHIGWindows.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/2961-TPXREF10

Quotes:
All window-frame areas have a gray gradient surface. In the window body,
content views (such as text or column views) display a white background by
default; the surrounding window-body background is a shade of light gray.

Important: In Mac OS X v10.5 and later, there are no brushed metal windows.
Windows that were designed as brushed metal windows to run in earlier versions
of Mac OS X should adopt the Leopard look in Mac OS X v10.5. For the most part
this is automatic. You may need to adjust your layout so that no window-frame
material is visible on the sides of the window and you should ensure that the
controls you used in the toolbar are still appropriate. See “Window-Frame
Controls” for more information on appropriate controls and “Legacy Toolbar
Controls” for some transition advice.

 The problem is...

Thanks for this explanation. A pity, that you have found out and solved so late,
so that the fix is too late for OOo3.0.1. But luck for OOo3.1. :-)
The question, that raises to me no is, why this issue only seemed to occur to
grahamperrin and me but not to anybody else? Why was it so difficult to
reproduce it on every testing Mac/MacBook/MacBoo Pro?

As to when CWS vcl98 will be integrated: somewhen in january.

OK.

If you're interested I can offer a build of the current state
 on our ftp server qa-upload.services.openoffice.org.

That would be very kind. Yes, please. If possible, compiled for Intel
architecture and multi-language (for me: in german language -- I don't know,
which language(s) grahamperrin prefers and wants to test).

Concerning your screenshots of langage and font installation, I can say, that my

and restrict it only to german and english. But I don't believe, that this has
anything to do with the discussed issue. My default font configuration as shown
by your TinkerTool preference pane looks exactly as yours.

@grahamperrin:

For this issue, which I reported, I have permission to target milestone 3.1.
I'm doing so now.

Why not targetting for the very next milestone/release, 3.0.1 (planned product
release: December 9th, 2008) instead of targetting for the next but one, 3.1
(planned product release: March 5th, 2009)?
Too close to the release date to fix the issue in time?

@of:

Do you have a developer to fix this?

What about the developer(s), who developed/programmed the new start center?
I would agree to your arguments, if this issue would be an issue somewhere
hidden in some submenue or functionality the user seldom uses.
But this issue confrontates the MacOSX user (or some of them) each time he
launches OpenOffice.
This issue is able to lower the first impresssion of OpenOffice more than ever
because it occurs in the new start center. More than ever. And since the very
first day of the official launch of OpenOffice 3.0.
In my opinion, it is a matter of priority, if a developer is available (or is
made available) to fix it or not.
In doubt, the developer/-team who initially programmed the new start center is
responsible and has to fix it. Because first impression matters. And the start
center, in my opinion, IS in fact a first impression and a business
card/visiting card for the whole entire (and following) office application.
From my point of view and from my expectation of product quality, the start
center of this Office application is the first thing, a user is seeing and
interacting with. You should not welcome the user with a start center, which
glances with such a glitch from the start on and might give the user a slight
impression of imperfection and un-professionalism of what might follow right
from the start on.
You know, what I mean and what I intend?

@gramphamperin:

If I can, I'll capture a movie of this behaviour.
It demonstrates well the symptom (if not the cause).

Yes, please!
I cannot believe, that we both, you and I, are the only users, who independently
are aware of this issue and interested in it to be solved and nobodyelse is able
to reproduce and confirm it.
I can't understand, why this issue still isn't worth to be examined deeper and
to be put into the front of a bigger audience. That's why tried to put it into
Issue #93339. But even there seems to be a barrier to put it on the depends on
list of Issue #93339.
I find this issue a very obvious glitch, which is able to lower the very first
feel of a good quality product, what OO.o 3 doubtless is.

@maveric:

Have you run it twice? Or three times? The first time, I launch OpenOffice
(after a clean install and a clean, virgin (meaning: removed) OpenOffice profile
in ~/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org), the issue does NOT occure: all
is perfect, the new start center of OpenOffice launches without this
issue/glitch.
All seems perfect. Close the application OpenOffice.org. Launch it again. Watch
the start center. And: voilà -- the issue occurs. And from that moment on, it
occurs every new launch on my installation, unless I clean the floor for a new
plain vanilla OpenOffice installation and delete ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org . I just tried it again, several minutes ago, while
writing these words here. The issue is reproducible: first launch of OpenOffice
all is OK -- no issue with the start center. Close the application, start it
again: star center has this issue. And from that moment on, every next launch
again. Unless you delete ~/Library/Application Support/OpenOffice.org and let it
build through OpenOffice again the next launch.
Because the issue does NOT occur, when you launch OpenOffice the first time with
a plain vanilla user profile (meaning ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org does not exist), I doubt, that this issue is in any way
related to the graphics card of my MacBook Pro (October 2006, ATI Mobility
Radeon X1600). The issue ONLY occurs, if you run OpenOffice more than one time
and with an existing user profile in ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org .
Please look deeper into it and continue to find out, what's wrong there.

I have waited some days/weeks, because I wanted to let settle down the troubles
and hectics around the shipping of OOO3.0 Release. BTW.: a great release, thank
you! :-)

But now I try to get your little attention/short focus on a small glitch on OOO3
on MacOSX.
Therefore, please make Issue 93631,
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=93631 a blocker of Issue 93339,
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=93339 .
This issue 93631, reported by the user grahamperrin is still there, I can still
confirm it in the latest Development Builds (OOO300 m11 as well as DEV300 m33).
This issue is a glitch, that should'nt be carried around too long, because it
makes OpenOffice look a kind of unfinished and unprofessional, especially for
users, which have their first touch with OpenOffice. From my point of view, this
little issue is an issue, that is able to cut off a little bit of the first
impression of OpenOffice beginning with the first launch of this application.
I don't know, if this issue is related only to MacOSX, but especially concerning
that particular platform: Apple users are HIGHLY sensitive to things and
glitches (careless, if it is a small glitch or a big one) concerning the visual
appearance and the OS integration of an application on MacOSX.
Please look into this issue and try to verify, confirm and/or fix it, or at
least put it on your agenda.
I know, it's a very small glitch. But a very small glitch that takes off a
little bright of OOO from the start on, (at least) on MacOSX.

The title says it all: please improve Cocoa integration of OOO into MacOSX and
make it seamless in look and feel.
The whole UI of OpenOffice 3.0 doesn't really fit into the UI environment of
MacOSX Leopard and MacOSX Tiger (what about upcoming Snow Leopard). Please try
to let look and feel it like a real, native Mac application, respecting the
standard colors, backgrounds (the legacy background stripes in the current
Preferences dialogue box of OOO on MacOSX look horrible and way out of date),
fonts of the dialogues etc.

Apple folks are very sensitive concerning this OS integration stuff. If an
application doesn't fit seamless ans smooth into their system UI, then they
don't use it, and they prefer using an application that fits better into their
system's UI.
Have a look at Firefox/Camino, these guys of Mozilla got it the right way how to
make it better seamless integrate. :-)

I can confirm this issue for RC1 as well as for RC 2 (build OOO300_m7).
I've tried it with a plain vanilla profile (I deleted ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org/ before launching OO.o). Reproducable.

Downloaded from: http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/
Language: de (german)
Platform: MacOSX (Intel)
OS: MacOSX 10.5.5

Strange remarkable thing: the very first time, I start OpenOffice.org with a
plain vanilla profile (letting OO.o create a new one below ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org/), all seems to be fine and OK. No issue.
After closing OO.o and relaunching it second time, the Start Center appears with
this issue concerning these four buttons at the bottom right of the Start Center
and described above and in the screenshot. Since then, the issue is sticky and
appears every time I start OO.o.
