I think it could be another problem with this system, so I don't know if
I should continue to bother you about it. Out of the 318 OOO DLLs and 18
OOO EXEs checked, Dependency Walker only found two missing dependencies
(MSCOREE.DLL and JAWT.DLL), but restoring those didn't fix StarBasic.

It would be nice to know what StarBasic needs for calling DLLs, so I could
investigate it further. I don't understand C++ well enough to learn from the
OOO source code. I don't know what problem this system could have that would
cause it to give the Not implemented error.

(The crash, by the way was due to improper installation, and was fixed)

Having to adjust to different shortcuts when going from one program
to another, is certain to annoy many users and slow them down. Presently,
everyone has to hope the designers will happen to choose their favorites.
This could be the solution:

The idea, is to have a few popular sets of shortcuts which can be selected
based on popular programs. So, they might select between imitations of:
OOO, MSWord, vi, and so on.
The sets should apply to the buttons on all the standard dialogs too (Find
Replace for example). Some caption renaming might also be involved,
shortcuts rely on ampersands preceding letters in them.

I haven't tried it with any builds more recent than 1.9.79 (1.9.m88 crashes on
start up). What made me think it was a problem with OOO, is that StarBasic said
not implemented, rather than a message that would suggest an external problem.

I think there might still be a file missing on this system that StarBasic needs
for that feature. I don't know what it could be though.

This duplicates it almost every time.
1) Open any OOO application
2) Start a new Writer document, so there are two OOO windows open
3) Go to the first OOO window and click on it to be sure it has the focus
4) Go to the taskbar and right-click the new document's icon.
5) Move the mouse along the menu items (not dragging)

There apparently must be two OOO windows open for this bug to show.

I was referring to the system menu for the application that's accessible
from the taskbar.
The menu freezing happens so often, I make a point to avoid it. I thought
that since it's so easy for me to duplicate this that you would also. I just
now did it again, but all I can guess that makes it happen is causing the
highlight to move up and down the menu, especially when the application has
just started.

Adjusting the widths of controls often causes a large increase
in their vertical spacing. The vertical spacing should have no
dependency on width. The layout becomes unusable. It seems to be
restored to normal after saving it in HTML view. To duplicate:

1) Start with a new HTML page
2) Draw three textboxes and put them on individual, adjacent
   lines by pressing Shift+Enter
3) Adjust the widths of one or more of them several times if
needed and watch the vertical spacing

See the attached partial screenshots (VertSpacing.zip).

Scrolling in Print Layout view should stop and align to each
page it passes. This gives a much neater feel to scrolling than
just scrolling a preset fraction of a window's worth of text
each time and almost never aligning to a page.

MSWord97 does this, and it's definitely a nice feature. I tested
MSWord with a few page and window heights and it does this con-
sistently, so it certainly shouldn't go against any official or
unofficial standards.

After further testing, I see MSWord97 only does this if the scrolling starts
out aligned to a page. Scrolling up has less tendency to align to pages.
It would be nice if Writer always tried to snap to to page boundaries even
when scrolling starts out unaligned. This would be an improvement on the
scrolling behaviour in Writer (and MSWord97).

There are three editing modes in which it appears, and it doesn't
restore the pane's state based on any of them.

In OOO Writer/Web 1.9.79, I inserted the following simple (and
useless) JavaScript function in a web page, using the Insert
Script dialog, with the Text option selected:

function jhsdfjk() {
var n = 0;
n++
}

...I then saved it and went to HTML view. Instead of The script,
there was a URL to the webpage itself:

SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript
file:///E:/Programs/OpenOffice2.0/Page.html
/SCRIPT

It seems that text format JavaScript isn't supported in the Insert
Script dialog. It always puts a URL. Once, it at least put a URL
to what might have been a temporary file containing a script. I've
tried several different means to do it, but I can't get it to retain
a script in an HTML page.

Checkbox and option control labels are rendered as text when HTNL
code is saved. Here's how I duplicated it:

1) Start a new webpage
2) Draw three checkboxes. For the screenshots, I put them on
separate lines.
3) Save the file
4) Go to HTML view
5) Make any harmless change to enable saving, like typing a space
then deleting it
6) Save the file
7) Go back to normal view
8) The checkbox labels will become plain text appearing past the
ends of the checkboxes they were assigned to.

In the (soon to be attached) ZIP file:
ChkBefore.GIF is the original layout
ChkAfter.GIF is the layout after saving the HTML code

In the Custom Animation dialog, when one selects a different
effect, the speed setting is changed. This is probably intended.
But there's no way, from this dialog, to preview an effect at any
other speed. I thought that this aspect might be unintentional.

The speed selections are retained when OK is pressed though.

This hasn't happened with any other document so far. It might show a
limitation of the code that you might want to eventually fix though.
It looks like OOO Writer is potentially confused by certain document
contents from files created with a previous OOO version.

So far all of them are, in both previews and slideshows. It
is most obvious when it goes to slide one from a blank screen.
A sample would show you nothing that you can't see already. I
doubt it could be a problem with this machine. It has very
good graphics performance with every program ever run on it.

It looks like the effects are done by copying small portions
of the next slide to the screen. This often makes edges appear
ragged during transitions. I suppose that approach might have
been taken to accommodate machines with little RAM and older
video cards. It doesn't do so well here though.

I did check on the web and found a post from someone else
having this problem with version 1.1.4.

pressed Enter, then tried to put double quotes around a word.
The quotes appeared as the black block characters you can see

That was easy to duplicate in OOO 1.9.79. I found the asme or a similar
bug in OOO 1.9.79. This happens less than 10% of the time for me. That's
why you need a fairly large document. Try using Times New Roman size 8.
It seems to help show the bug. I duplicate it this way:

1) Get a document with about 100 lines or more of text
2) Press End to go to the end of a line
3) Move the caret to the start of the next line using the Right Arrow key
5) Press Shift+End to select the entire line
5) Press End again to deselect the line
6) The line is stil selected

It's somewhat annoying how documents shift and scroll when going between
text and form-design modes. You can duplicate this by clicking text when
a control is selected, or selecting a control while in text editing mode.
This was very noticable in OOO Writer and OOO Base so far.
I stablized it by putting the form-design toolbar beside the formatting
toolbar, so at least one of them would always be there to keep it's height
constant.
Perhaps it could be changed so its height is always left the same except
when the user removes it. ...Or have both toolbars side-by-side by default.

The (slight) problem, is that when one starts OOO, there is too long
of a delay between the time the splash screen disappears and the time
the main window becomes visible. This leaves one wondering for a while
if maybe OOO has frozen. I suggest The startup screen should remain
visible until:

1) The main window is actually visible
...or...
2) It is clicked
...or...
3) ESC is pressed

In Calc, the caret doesn't show in a cell after just double-clicking
it. It requires a third click or a key press to make it appear. This
doesn't interfere with editing the contents though. This can make it
difficult for one to know where editing will occur when there's already
text there.

I found some more missing or incorrect help tips, so I'm combining
them into one issue. I guess some of the missing ones might have
been left out intentionally. Some of these apply to more than one
application, but are still only included once. This isn't quite all
of what I found either.

-
In Calc:
Edit/Repeat Input (missing)

Format/Alignment/Default says: Opens the Callouts toolbar...

Format/Alignment/Left (missing)
Format/Alignment/Centered (missing)
Format/Alignment/Right(missing)

Format/Alignment/Justify says: Open basic shapes...

Format/Alignment/Top says: Open...
Format/Alignment/Center says: Open...
Format/Alignment/Bottom says: Open...

Format/Arrange/Forward One, says the same thing as Format/Arrange/Back One

Format/Graphic/Line might be clearer if it said:
Sets the line formatting options for the selected object(s)

Tools/Macros/Organize Dialogs/(missing)

File/Wizards/Document Converter (missing)
File/Wizards/Euro Converter (missing)
File/Wizards/Install New Dictionaries (missing)
File/Wizards/Install Fonts from the Web (missing)

-
In Writer:
Table/Sort says Open the formula bar

-
In Draw:
The line-style dropdown icon has the tip broken up into extra lines.

Most of the tips for drawing shapes either all share a few common tips,
or have copies of their category's tip.

-
In Impress:
Slide Show/Custom Animation (missing)
Insert/Page Number... (missing)
Insert/Date and Time... (missing)

-
In Base:
Tools/SQL..., the tip says Opens the Execute SQL Statement. I think this
should be either: Opens the Execute SQL statement dialog, or Execute an SQL
statement

View/Database objects/Queries
View/Database objects/Forms
View/Database objects/Reports

Tips are missing For View/Preview/ and all its submenus.

The StarBasic IDE crashes when even opening the attached code
(IDE_Crasher.txt). If there's a limit to how much a line of code can be split
up using _, it should
be mentioned. There are likely to be many occassions where a line needs to be
broken up into numerous parts.
The attached file is the start of one module that originally had a line split
into 69 parts. It still crashes the IDE when it's opened even after the line
splitting was reduced.

An important note: It seems much less likely to crash if I first open another
module and then go to the IDE crashing module.

I had clicked a flowchart icon and tried to draw it. The cursor changed to
crosshairs style, then Draw wouldn't respond to anything. Usually, in this
version, there is a delay of about a second after clicking a drawing icon
before drawing can be done. This last time, when it froze, I had clicked and
started to draw very quickly and apparently rushed it.

I had a problem which is probably related to this bug. I created a form
with the wizard. It saved the form, but the form was nowhere to be found
afterward. This was when running OOO2.0 beta on WinMe.

I had a similar occurrence. CrashReport crashed with an exception
generated in KERNEL32.DLL, in function: EnterCriticalSection.
EnterCriticalSection was apparently passed a value of 0x20 instead
of a pointer to a CRITICAL_SECTION that it expected. This happened
running OOO 1.9.79 on WinMe.

This should help out a lot:

I wrote a test program which loads (and unloads) DLLs. It had no trouble
loading five of the six DLLs when testing it, but it couldn't load UNICOWS.DLL.
It returned 0 instead of a handle. GetLastError returned 0 also. This means
the problem has nothing to do with openoffice. Perhaps it has something to do
with its properties. Here are some from Dependency Walker:

File Ver: 1.0.4018.0
Subsystem: Win32 Console
Debug: Yes
Image Ver: 6.0
OS Ver: 6.0
Subsystem Ver 4.0

Most DLLs show Win32 GUI for Subsystem, and no for debug.

In case you wondered, the problem was that there were two DLLs missing that
UNICOWS.DLL indirectly depended on.

What fails is a call to LoadLibrary in UWINAPI.DLL. Is there a chance of
compiling a test version of it with a call to GetLastError immediately after
LoadLibrary? That should get an answer much faster.

I just now tried installing version 1.1.3 and the installation itself failed
with the same error message. This version has been installed and run before on
this system, so I'm guessing it's a firewall or registry issue. Perhaps due to
a misused registry cleaner program.

I uninstalled the firewall and antivirus programs, then rebooted. I still got
the
same error. I don't know what effects the registry could have on this. There was
nothing important there except at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Components\946474500BCBEE4409BDCB0052CAAE65
which probably means nothing.

I have successfully installed and am now running version 1.0 (product version
6.00.7663). This is with the firewall and antivirus programs re-installed.
Either it doesn't use UNICOWS.DLL, or I can't find the copy it's using (I can
tell if one's being used when Windows won't let me rename it).

I didn't find anything misconfigured, but perhaps there are some things that
could affect it that I don't know about.

My download site was (USA Indiana U):
ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/openoffice/stable/2.0beta/OOo_2.0beta_Win32Intel_install.zip
I downloaded a copy from the link you posted, and ran a diff on the
installation
files and it said they were all binary equals.
...then...
I uninstalled openoffice and removed most references to all versions of it from
the registry, then re-installed and got the same error.
...then...
I renamed both of the copies of UNICOWS.DLL on drive C: to UNICOWS-x.DLL to
be
sure the one in the openoffice folder was the only one to be found (as I said it
did actually load it before).
...then...
I rebooted with my firewall disabled to see if it could be the problem. I'm
using eTrust EZ Firewall by Computer Associates. Still the same error message.
I've actually had to uninstall my firewall before to keep it fully deactivated.
I hope to avoid doing that again.
...then...
I ran soffice.exe in OllyDbg to verify UNICOWS.DLL was still being loaded, and
it was there, but still said it couldn't find it.

Could installing to a secondary drive be the problem? I don't have enough room
left on drive C to try installing it there.
