I wrote a document in OOo 3.0, and saved in .doc format. After upgrading to OOo
3.1, the document opens, but the tables don't display. I've tried selecting
where the tables should be, and adjusting colours, fonts, etc. They still don't
appear. Word can read the table. So can Abiword. So can OOo 2.4.

We have a word document, which prints *perfectly* to an HP Laserjet 4500 ( on a
cups server ). However, printing this document to a Ricoh AP3200 ( on the same
cups server ) results in some very strange formatting corruption inside a table
in the document. Immediately after pressing the 'print' button in the print
dialog, you can see the document change to reflect this corruption, and then the
document prints with this corruption.

I am attaching the document, a PDF export *before* it was printer, and a PDF
export *after* it was printed. I'm also attaching the PPD file for the
RicohAP3200 printer.

The corruption occurs in the table under the 'SUMMARY' heading on the 1st page.
In the 1st column, each character in the 1st 2 words gets line break ( or
something ) characters inserted after it, so the 1st 2 words basically go
vertically down the page. It's very strange. See attached PDFs.

I have tested 2 client PCs running Gentoo Linux and OOo-2.2. I have also tested
OOo-2.2 under Windows 2000, and this bug DOES NOT HAPPEN ... ie it only affects
Linux.

We're using cups-1.2.10 on both the client and server, and using IPP browsing to
'connect' the printers ( ie zero configuration on the client ).

[installation-issues] [Issue 45477] Uninstall does not remove files and Registry keys

I strongly disagree with the above comment re: not removing keys that weren't
installed by OOo. The reason we're asking for these keys to be removed is for
usability. The bottom line is that if these keys are not removed, then OOo will
not be properly integrated on Windows. Users will go to open a document, and
they'll get a file browser dialog asking them where soffice.exe went. I urge
people to read again the so-called 'proper' method of migrating from one version
of OO to another ( which I posted above, and had to repeat on 30 or so
computers, multiplied by however many beta versions of OOo I ran ... to many
anyway ), which involves manually removing registry keys.

People who take the we didn't do it ... it's not our problem attitude are
missing the point completely. Removing these keys is the only way OOo will work
properly on Windows. Users should not have to manually edit the registry to get
OOo to work.

I'm also seeing this bug with OOo-2.1 under Linux. I originally thought it was a
bug in CUPS, so I forwarded off a cups debug log to the CUPS newsgroup, and got
the followowing reply:

---

The log indicates that OpenOffice requested only 1 copy ... Keep in mind that
OOo creates PostScript job that violate some of
the DSC in a way that CUPS' pstops filter might severely manglue up
the job, especially things like watermarks (e.g. set upb via defaults
in the PPD) are completely lost. And the numbr of copies is defined
within the PostScript job (as /#copies n def), but no number of
copies is set as a job attribute. Thus the pstops filter assumes only one copy.

I'd suggest to do only raw printing from OOo until they produce
DSC compliant PostScript.

---

Can someone please make the following changes to the bug:

- Affects OSX, Linux, and Windows
- Version 2.1

The document attached crashes OOo 2.0.3 under both Windows 2000 and Gentoo
Linux. There is no automated crash reporting for this one - OOo doesn't seem to
detect the crash like it does with other crashes.

The import progress indicator seems to get all the way to 100%, and then I get
100% CPU usage until I kill OOo.

Fine then. I'll resist the strong temptation to submit a duplicate in the hope
that it will get some attention ... I'll even vote for this bug ( which means
pulling votes from other bugs ) ... but how about a status update, please? As
far as I can tell, PDF export is completely useless in it's current state.

2.0 has been out for a while now.

Perhaps it is time to consider a way of sanitising the registry when upgrading
OOo to avoid all the issues people will be having now with opening Office
documents since upgrading from 1.x to 2.0?

For those not convinced of the need to address this bug, try the following
simple demonstration.

1) Install OOo-1.1.4 on a clean system, using the default options for everything
2) 'Train' Windows Explorer ( right-click and 'open with...', select OOo ) and
other apps ( eg Thunderbird ) how to open common Office documents.
3) Uninstall OOo-1.1.4.
4) Install OOo-2.0.1, using the default options for everything.
5) Try to open Office documents from Windows Explorer and Thunderbird.

Explorer / Thunderbird try to use the old 1.1.4. They're looking in the
registry. We should make sure that the registry contains valid data while
installing.

I have to manually do the following on 20 or so systems every time I upgrade:

1) Uninstall OOo.
2) Open regedit.exe
3) Search for 'soffice'.
4) Delete all entries found.
5) Search for 'oowriter'.
6) Delete all entries found.
7) Search for 'oocalc'.
8) Delete all entries found.
9) Search for 'ooimpress'.
10) Delete all entries found.
11) Install OOo.

I don't have permission to change the priority of bugs :(

As a workaround, you can write a macro to change the language of a document to
English ( USA ) on opening each document. It's pretty dodgy, but at least you
can spell check documents.

One of the comments in the bug mentioned above says:

---

It appears that there are two problems:
1 On certain Linux machines, file locking is known to fail due to the NFS lock
demon not running.
2 On certain other Linux machines, it appears that file locking fails due to
some other, not yet analyzed reason.
I would like to keep this issue concentrated on problem 1.
To analyze problem 2, please file a new issue (you can assign it to me) where
you include the output of running strace on soffice.bin (if you run soffice.bin
directly rather than through the soffice script, remember to export
SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING!).

---

So Issue 54586 will most likely not apply to most people here. Should I report a
*new* bug, and attach an strace log as per the above instructions, or should
this bug be resurrected?

As for StarOffice, I was invited to try out a beta version, but found the

I was under the impression that the installer only needed to install stuff in
the user's home folder, but maybe this is different with the Gentoo install that

Calc currently shows where page breaks will occur by drawing a grey line at the
point of page break. This feature can be enabled / disabled by selecting Tools
== Options == OpenOffice.org Calc == View ... and then selecting 'Page
Breaks' in the 'Visual Aids' section.

The problem is that these grey lines to indicate where page breaks will occur is
quite hard to see when the spreadsheet already has grey lines ( ie in cell
borders ) in it.

It would be great to have the option of displaying these page break indicators
as dotted lines ( maybe even coloured ) instead of the current unbroken grey
line.

Thanks :)

I have just installed OOo-1.9.122 for Linux ( Gentoo Linux ), and now the
dictionary installer is completely broken.

It used to be only partially broken:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=40240

Now I see no indication that the installer worked at all. When I complete the
dictionary installer wizard, and close all OOo windows, and open a new writer
window, I go into:

Tools == Options == Language Settings == Languages. In the 'Western' combo
for 'Default language for documents', the dictionary I selected to download is
not installed.

Issue seems to be caused by fonts copied from a windows partition ( and running
mkfontfdir on the directory ). Removing the font directory from my
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file has 'fixed' this bug.

If I was wrong to copy fonts from a windows partition like this, then this bug
can be marked as invalid. I *thought* it should work, but I suppose this bug is
evidence that it doesn't...

Sorry.

[installation-issues] [Issue 45477] Uninstall does not remove files and Registry keys

I'd like to weight in on this one as well.
There are a number of ways that paths to OOo binaries can get into the registry.
The installer is just one of them. Users can right-click on a file, and say
Open With ... and choose the path to an OOo binary. There are most likely
others.

The problem is that with the path changing with each version, a lot of stale
references to uninstalled versions of OOo are left around the place. Clicking on
a file will then result in a dialog saying something along the lines that the
destination file doesn't exist. When I do an OOo upgrade, after I uninstall OOo,
I open regedit, and manually search for all soffice, swriter, and scalc
references and delete them. This is the only way to get a fully functioning
system.

So ... not only should the installer have the option of removing registry
entries that a previous installer may have set, but also of removing *ALL*
registry settings that have anything to do with OOo - whether the installer put
them there or not. Without this, users must be adept at registry hacking to make
OOo work properly, especially when clicking on documents from Windows Explorer.

I've unfortunately found a Gentoo box on our network that *doesn't* have this
problem, so it looks like it might be an obscure one.

How to I recover crash data from a crash if the automatic reporting thing
doesn't realise there's been a crash?

I've just tested under OOo-1.9.95 on a number of Linux systems, and the problem
has actually gotten *worse*.

Prior to 1.9.95, in the dialog:

Options == Language Settings == Languages

I could at least see the results of a successful English ( Australian )
dictionary installation, even if I couldn't actually select the language in
'writing tools'. Now installation isn't even accomplished. It works under
Windows 2000 with OOo-1.9.95.

I don't want to sound like a spoilt brat jumping up and down and threatening to
'go back to Microsoft Office'. It would be an absolute tragedy, however, if
OOo-2 went final with spell checking so horribly broken ... and this ( moving
back to Microsoft Office ) is exactly what will happen if, as with the 1.0
release, spell checking is not functional. When combined with
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3310 OOo is complely unusable on
anything other than Windows in the default language ... and let me point out
once more that the default language has been wandering from English (US) to
English (UK) to Danish! ( see above comments )

Seriously, a word processor *needs* a functional spell checker.

re: the question can you tell, how to detect which language ? ...

The very reason why this is an issue is that OOo *does* know what language the
document is in, and if a matching language pack is not installed, spell checking
fails.

For example, we are in Australia. All our documents are created thus. When
someone with OOo goes to edit the document / template / whatever, they can't do
a spell check because the Australian language pack is not installed.

Why don't we install a language pack, I hear you ask? Impossible:

Is there any way I can *force* the crash reporter to produce a report?
As I said in the original report, this has affected a lot of our documents, and
I'm getting nervous about OOo 2 getting released but us not being able to
upgrade to it because of this one.

Since just after OOo 1.9.87, OOo has crashed upon importing this ( and many
other ) DOC files. In OOo 1.9.91 it recognised the crash and started the crash
reporter, but now it simply dies silently.

The above 2 posts are not related to this bug - they relate to the handling of
styles inside a document. This bug relates to OOo's handling of languages
*globally*.

Back on-topic ... is there any word on whether this will be fixed for the final
release? I've checked in OOo-1.9.91 and spell-checking is still broken in a
fairly major way on all but Windows systems, ie I still can't make OOo switch to
using ANY language other than the UK dictionary that it defaults to.

Anyway, the bug seems to be fixed in OOo-1.9.87. I just tested printing to most

Yeah it still happens in OOo-1.9.87 under Linux.

simpress opens fine by itself ( starts with the 'create new presentation' wizard
). And simpress is also fine opening other presentations - both native OOo files
and Powerpoint files.

It refuses to open this one ( The Institute of Chartered Accountants ) however -
dies almost immediately, and doesn't produce a crash log when I restart.

The dialog editor has no apparent method of aligning controls.

If I put a row of controls on a dialog, select them, and copy and paste them,
the newly pasted items are not aligned to the originals.

Even worse, there is no method via the GUI to make them align. Controls seem to
'snap to grid' when dragged around on the dialog ... HOWEVER ... the grid is not
a common grid, but a grid which is specific to the controls you have selected. I
suspect this is because the dialog editor only allows you to move controls by a
fixed amount each time ( for example, by 10 pixels ), so the position(s) you can
drag a control to are defined by their original position on the dialog.

I suggest:

- a menu command which aligns selected items, for example 'align to left-most
item', 'align to right-most item', etc.

- the ability to move controls by ONE unit at a time

I realise that I can double-click on a control and set it's 'PositionX',
'PositionY', 'width', etc. This is completely non-intuitive and a very clumsy
way of doing things.

OOo documents appear in nautilus as zip files. I assume this is because of their
mime type ( application/zip ). It would be great if nautilus were 'told' about
OOo document types by the installer, so they looked like documents ( maybe some
nice OOo icons ) instead of zip files.

Note sure about the component for this bug. This is the closest I could find.
Sorry.

OOo comes bundled with a dictionary installer, DicOOo, that automates
downloading and installing dictionaries. The bundled version is 1.3.something.
Whenever you run the dictionary installer ( File == Wizards == Install New
Dictionaries ), DicOOo will first check to see if a new version is available,
and if so, will ask the user if they first want to download the latest version
of DicOOo.

I have been using DicOOo-1.4.1 with at least as much success as the bundled 1.3.

Can we bump the included version to the latest version out there?

I'm attaching a document ( DOC ) that has an embedded Excel chart in it. The
chart displays correctly apart from dropping most of the labels. The only label
I get is 'Local 18%'. When opened in MS Word, all slices of the pie chart are
labeled.

Tested in OOo 2.0 Beta Candidate under Linux.

I also just tested in OOo 2.0 Beta under Windows 2000, and it behaves *slightly*
differently. The end result is the same: only one label is displayed. However
under Windows I can double-click on the chart, and it opens in Microsoft Graph (
which partly explains why I can't double-click on it under Linux ). When
Microsoft Graph opens it, it displays correctly, with all labels. When I close
Microsoft Graph, however, the display in OpenOffice remains as it was before:
only one label.

I have all the corefonts installed, but I just re-installed them in case they
were corrupted. Problem still exists.

I've submitted a bug report with the email address:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've mentioned this issue number in the subject and details.

I have also just tested on another Gentoo Linux PC, and I *can't* reproduce the
error there. This system is a NPTL one - mine is not. Other than that, they
should be basically identical - same versions of software installed, but
compiled against a different glibc.

Because I can't reproduce the issue on another Gentoo system, I'm leaving the
issue set to 'resolved worksforme' - even though it's still crashing my system.
Obviously this isn't exactly ideal for me, but I'm willing to accept that it's
an obscure bug you will likely not be able to reproduce on your systems without
a great deal of trouble. If someone wants to have a look at the crashlog I
submitted ( and possibly reopen the issue if appropriate ), that would still be
great :)

I've just tested in OOo 1.9.79 under Windows 2000, and the document does
actually open properly.

However in OOo 1.9.79 under Linux, OOo still crashes. I can open the document (
with my zoom set to 'optimal' or bigger ), and scroll down to the bottom of the
table item 'PERSONNELL PRESENT'. If I try to scroll any further down ( ie to the
'ACTION BY NUS' part ), OOo crashes.

I discovered something else interesting too. If I open OOo with the above
document, with the zoom set to 'optimal', and then change the view to '100%',
the page renders everything in the table down to the 'PERSONNELL PRESENT' row.
It then renders the 'ACTION BY NUS' cell, but there is *nothing* else next to
this or below it.

Perhaps it is something about the bulleting in the table next to 'ACTION BY NUS'
that is causing the crash.

At any rate, it's only happening under Linux now.

I've just hit this issue in OOo 1.9.79 under Linux ( Gentoo, 2.6 kernel ).

I an unable to open any documents on an nfs share - all attempts result in the
General input / output error. I have of course made sure I have full ( chmod
777 ) access to the files / folders.

I can also confirm that attempting to save a file results in a 0-byte file and
an input / output error.

I can create files from everything else, eg:

echo Hi there /mnt/nfs_share/test.txt

I have a number ( a large number ) of files that were saved under previous (
early 1.9.58 ) versions of OOo that no longer open in OOo 1.9.77. Instead of
opening the document, I get a dialog asking me which import filter to use ( doc,
csv, etc ).

Tested under OOo 1.9.77 under Windows and Linux.

I have opened the oot file in WinRar and inspected. The zip is not corrupted,
and the files also *look* OK.

I was getting this error last night when I click the FileOpen button to browse
my PC for a file to open.

I unfortunately can't reproduce it this morning - instead OOo simply dies with
no error at all. This isn't just from scalc - mine was doing it from swriter,
and I assume it has something to do with the gnome open / save dialog box that
appears when you press load / save.

Confirmed in OOo 1.1.4 under Windows 2000: the image appears too low, obscures
part of the text.

Issue *doesn't* exist in OOo 1.9.74 under Linux.

Many formatting issues such as this one have been fixed in the upcoming
OpenOffice 2.0 ( of which 1.9.74 is a developer build ). If you *need* to have
the document render correctly, you could try the latest developer build of
OpenOffice ... but we warned that it's not completely stable yet.

As a side note, I tried to open the document in Word XP ( 2002 ) under Windows
2000, and it locked Word, each time I tried to open it :)

Here is a document which crashes OOo 1.9.74 under Linux when opening. OOo dies
silently. The splash screen appears for a couple of seconds, and then
disappears, returning a prompt back to my terminal ( Eterm ). No error report is
generated - when OOo opens the next time it doesn't seem to realise it had
crashed previously.

In OOo 1.9.74 under Windows, the document open and displays correctly, but won't
print. As this issue seem significantly different, I'm entering a 2nd bug
report. I'll post the link to this ( in case they're related ) when I add the
Windows bug.

The document opens, displays, and prints properly under OOo 1.1.4.

Here is a document that will not print under OOo 1.9.74 ( or 1.9.71s1 ) under
Windows 2000.

The document opens and displays correctly under *Windows* ( under Linux OOo
crashes while importing, see:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=41854 ).

When I press 'print', nothing happens. If I open the print queue in Windows
2000, nothing is there. If I try to close the document, I get an error saying
that the current document can't be closed because a print job is in action. If I
open the task manager, OOo is not using any CPU time apart from when it does a
screen redraw. If I kill OOo from the task manager, a print job immediately
appears in the Windows 2000 print queue, and then the 1st 4 pages print.

When I have a multi-sheet spreadsheet and I save as csv, there is no warning
that only the current sheet will be exported.

I don't have a problem with the behaviour - it is correct to only export the
current sheet. There should be a warning though, as others may not expect this
behaviour.

Here is a document which crashes both OOo-1.9.71s1 and OOo-1.9.74 under Windows
2000 sp4. If OOo is already open, and I use the File == Open dialog, the
progress bar for the MS Word import process extends all the way to the right (
ie progress complete ), and then a little before the document is displayed, OOo
crashes. I have tested opening the document from the network drive and also from
my C: drive. I have also tested on multiple computers, and even a Windows 2000
session under vmware. Crashes every single install.

I have tested the document in OOo-1.9.71s1 under Linux and have *not* been able
to reproduce it ( ie only crashes win32 version ). I haven't yet been able to
make OOo-1.9.74 install under Linux ( I'm working on it ), but will do this ASAP
and post results below.

I just noticed that the document I was going to attach is bigger than the
maximum allowable size. Therefore I'm linking to a gzipped copy ( 2.5 MB ) of
the doc:

Update: After further testing in OOo-1.9.71s1 under Linux, it appears that the
document *does* in fact cause a crash, however not immediately upon opening. The
document is fine until you scroll *just* past the 3rd page. As the 1st bit of
the 4th page is rendered, OOo crashes.

I am now attempting to upgrade to OOo-1.9.75 under Linux so I can verify there
too.

Still crashes for me in OOo-1.9.74 under Gentoo Linux.

I think I stumbled across another example of the same bug, and I've submitted
another bug report, thinking this was a different issue ( as I believed this one
to be fixed ... I had tested in OOo-1.9.71s1 under Windows and it worked ). New
bug report:

http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=41497

And yes I realise that the above is a duplicate of this bug. Sorry. Like I said,
I had assumed that this bug was fixed, and that the above was a separate bug,
but after further testing, it looks like they might be one and the same.

I've just verified that this bug exists in OOo-1.9.74 under Linux, but in the
process I've also realised that this bug is probably a duplicate of a previous
bug of mine ... which I believed was resolved ( hence entering a new issue ).
Original bug:

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=40533

Appologies for entering a duplicate.

[framework-issues] [Issue 37488] OOo does not recognise CUPS printers with CUPS 1.1.22 (Gentoo)

Same here.

- Current Gentoo install.
- cups-1.1.23
- OpenOffice-1.9.71.1 ( or 1.9.71s1 ), installed from RPMs.
- No printers defined on client ... using cups 'browsing' to share printers on
server

Printer list is available from all other apps I use, but no longer in
OpenOffice.

I'm almost certain that OOo-1.9.65 ( and possibly later ) was working fine. I
will test older versions if someone wants me to pinpoint exactly when it stopped
working.

I just noticed: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=38660 ... which
claims it's just been fixed.

Is this the same as our bug?

vandan-ja: Appologies for the delay. I have reproduced this crash on the latest
OOo I could find ( OOo-1.9.71s1 ) and submitted a crash report from

I also mentioned this bug number a couple of times throughout the report
