>From Mati Allouche:

a) I think that parentheses belong to the encompassing text and not to the text
included within. As proof, consider the following logical string (where upper
case represents Hebrew letters), displayed in a LTR paragraph:

   eng1 eng2 (HEB3 HEB4) eng5 eng6

If the whole string is displayed on one line, as shown below

   eng1 eng2 (4BEH 3BEH) eng5 eng6

it does not matter if the left parenthesis is an open parenthesis associated
with the English text or a closing parenthesis associated with the Hebrew text
and subject to symmetric swapping (and reversely for the right parenthesis).
But if the string is broken into 2 lines, associating the parentheses with the
encompassing text will display as

  eng1 eng2 (3BEH
  4BEH) eng5 eng6

while associating the parentheses with the inner text will display as

   eng1 eng2 3BEH)
   (4BEH eng5 eng6

I think that the first display is the preferred one.

b) The problem does not seem to be related to directionality, but to the
algorithm for determining line breaks (it might be that the algorithm considers
directional runs boundaries as allowed break points). Why this algorithm
behaves differently for LTR and RTL text, at least when parentheses are
concerned, is part of the issue.

c) If the problem is not related to directionality, changing the Bidi properties
of parentheses is not going to fix it.

d) Changing the Bidi properties of any character to values different from
specified by Unicode is a bad idea anyway. I hope that there is no need to
justify this statement.

[l10n-issues] [Issue 14069] Problems with placement of Hebrew vowels (nikud | diacritics) in Linux

yba->pueyo:
There is indeed a dearth of OpenType Hebrew fonts with diacritics at this time.
No one disagrees that at the present time this is a serious problem with Hebrew
in OOo. However, this is an economic problem, not a software problem. It does
not make sense to try to solve an economic problem by writing code, especially
since there is no possibility of writing satisfactory code to solve what is in
fact an esthetic problem. The appropriate technology to solve this problem is
available in OpenType GPOS and GSUB together. Since I think that writing code to
solve this problem is inappropriate, and that the resources to write and test
that code should be spent on font enhancement, I do not agree that this is a
feature enhancement, it's just adding cruft to OOo and delaying implementation
of the correct solution.

There have been many atttempts to write heuristics for Hebrew diacritic
placement. I don't know of any of them that purport to be anything more than
hacks or workarounds. As far as I know, only one of them was written since the
publication of the OpenType standard. The best of these heuristics work only
passibly well and only for diacritics below the line of the glyphs, not in or
above the glyphs (CHOLAM, DAGESH), and they require fonts with an inordinate
amount of space below the glyphs in order to trick the eye into thinking that
the diacritics are placed correctly when in fact they are just centered below
the glyph.

Hi Nadav, others,
We are not going to re-open this issue because there is no problem when you use
OpenType fonts with correct GPOS positioned diacritics. This is a font issue,
period.

The Hebrew OOo project is not going to spend any more resources on this topic.
This is not a bug.

There is no heuristic that places Hebrew diacritics correctly or even
satisfactorily for all fonts in all sizes. It is not possible to write such a
heuristic because of the irregularities in the glyphs between fonts and between
sizes within fonts. Only an artist can place the diacritics correctly.
OpenType GPOS tables provide the solution to this problem.

Try MasterFont's new Hebrew fonts with GPOS diacritics.

Hi Eike, Alan, Ronware
We discussed this issue thoroughly about three years ago on the
IVRIX-discussions and Linux-IL lists.

Use of consecutive Hebrew letters HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH through HEBREW_LETTER_TAV
and followed by HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH through
HEBREW_LETTER_ALEPH HEBREW_LETTER_TAV for outline numbering is mandated by at
least one repectable old Israeli textbook. In fact, examples of this usage are
rare, and in electronic format do not exist.

There are no examples of consecutive letter numbering in footnote, paragraph or
page numbering, either in traditionally printed religious texts or in modern but
pre-computer Israeli texts.

[sw-issues] [Issue 62413] Text in formula editor sho uld not be right-aligned in RTL

There seems to be some confusion here. Let us try to straighten it out.

Alignment

First of all, mathematical formulae that appear in Hebrew texts are right
aligned, just like any other LTR text that is embedded in a Hebrew or Arabic
text.

Directionality

Mathematical formulae in their entirety are considered to be embedded LTR texts
in Israel for the purposes of Hebrew and Arabic text *as printed in Israel*.
Israel is also an Arabic speaking country and with it's own Arabic locale. It
might be that mathematical formulae are displayed otherwise on other Arabic
locales though I rather doubt it. Please ask Waleed Husny or the Arabeyes list
or Magdy Abdel Kudous at Sun about this.

Therefore, in the absence of explicit directional overrides, the first character
of a Western numerical expression or mathematical formula embedded in a Hebrew
or Arabic text increments the Bidi algorithm embedding level of the paragraph,
and the first strong RTL (Hebrew or Arabic) character following the numerical
expression decrements the embedding level. In simple terms, "A = B" in a Hebrew
or Arabic text printed in Israel looks exactly like "A = B" in an English text
printed in Manchester - there is no switching sides around the "=" sign.

I will solicit Matti Allouche's comment on this, since he has a sharper grasp of
the Bidi algortihm and the higher level protocols than I.
