It is not specific to Hebrew at all, but appears to happen with every spell-checking dictionary. It appears that when spell-checking first needs to run (after you type one word, after you load a file, etc.) it freezes OpenOffice while it loads the dictionary into memory. On my machine, this takes about 10 seconds. Once I used a Linux distribution which came with OpenOffice myspell dictionaries for about 20 languages, all enabled by default. When spell-checking started, it froze openoffice for 10 minutes and took up 1 GB of memory (!); To make OpenOffice usable I had no recourse but to disable most of the dictionaries, leaving only the Hebrew and English (which interested me). I think there are two questions here: 1. Why does loading the Hebrew dictionary (and other dictionaries) take so many seconds and use up so much memory? The Hebrew dictionary is indeed relatively large (about 4 MB), but 10-30 seconds still sounds a bit much. 2. Perhaps more importantly, why can't dictionary be loaded in a separate thread? Why does it need to completely freeze the UI while it's loading the dictionary? The person opening this bug wouldn't have been bothered if the first spelling correction appeared 30 seconds after opening a file, but he is bothered if he can't do anything for 30 seconds. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. After adding hspell Hebrew dictionary using File-Wizards-Install New Dictionaries, I get the following: When I open an empty document, everything is fine. If I open an existing document, or start typing a few letters in a new document, openoffice suddenly freezes and becomes unresponsive for 15-30 seconds. After that, mispellings (if exist) are marked on the text. After this happens once, I can open more documents with no problem until I quit ooo2 completely. There are no writing aids in use except hspell dictionary (Hunspell). If I choose not to check spelling while typing, I simply postpone the temporary freeze to the first time I spellcheck manually. This issue is present in my system for many weeks now, on clean installations of OpenOffice from ubuntu breezy and dapper packages (2.02 and below) and on package downloaded directly from openoffice.org (2.03).
