With PDF you loose a lot of information and with Flash well it becomes too much complicated and a lot of systems don't even have Flash player. For example 64-bit systems for which Macromedia still has not released any player or plugin. These documents become unreadable (or worse yet, misleading) when default fonts are substituted, so it's pretty much impossible to share such documents in the OpenOffice formats, or to take them with you on the road without carrying a preconfigured laptop. Just last week I sent an associate some presentation in .ODP format, and ended up doing a lot of explaining about some mangled formulas. Some PowerPoint add-ins, such as TexPoint, make copious use of such special fonts, and embed them into the PPT file.
