While you can use an RTL system locale (e.g. hebrew or arabic) it is much easier
to set environment variable SAL_RTL_ENABLED to true.

Looking at the code again I also see that VDevs are per default unmirrored while
windows inherit this setting from their parent. Application windows OTOH have
the setting usually set explicitly to off since they do their own layouting; I
think this is also true for draw/impress since e.g. gradients and patterns are
not mirrored. I don't know where the overlays come into play, do they perhaps
use a parent window of the actual window the application draws to ? That might
explain the difference. Or perhaps we're on the wrong track entirely :-(

AW: Hmmm. I get the office now forced to RTL, but the original version and the
changed version both work the same. I still cannot reproduce the error. Thus i
cannot verify if the RtL-Flag causes the bug.

AW-PL: The overlay uses a VDEV which gets created setting the same pixel sizes,
mapmodes, and SetSettings(GetSettings()) and other stuff as the Window it shall
buffer. I copy now the RtL flag, but i do not get the error if i do not copy it.
Any hints? Should i check in the flag copying? Could it do any harm? How could
nadavkav check it? Maybe it does not happen with windows at all?

finally, i had time to find a windows computer and install OO 2.2 localized
(www.openoffice.org.il) and later upgrade to OOo 2.3 and later to OOo 2.4
beta/rc.

in none of them i could reproduce this issue !
i guess it is a linux specific issue.

my test machines are fedora 8 and debian sid. do you have a version i can
download and test in one of those environments ?

OutputDevice::IsRTLEnabled should do the trick. The line below
OutputDevice::EnableRTL in outdev.hxx. Glad to help.

AW-PL: Thanks, this should be the reason for this problem.
AW-nadavkav: I have done the needed code changes, but i do not know how to
reproduce to check if this fixes the problem. I tried to reproduce on Wndows,
but no success yet. Could You reproduce on Windows?
AW-PL: I installed Hebrew and Ararbic, but i simply don't get the office to
start in RTL. Do You remember the trick?

pl-aw: Ah, I didn't understand that before, thanks for clearing up my
confusion.

However neither SetDrawMode nor SetSettings copies the RTL state. So that may
indeed be the problem.

AW-PL: Ah, i did not know that. Thats why i need Your expertise in cases like
these. If You tell me how to copy that flag, i can do the fix. I already added
the task to one of my CWSes anyways. So, how do i copy the
OutputDevice::EnableRTL() flag to a OutputDevice i use for copying?

AW-PL: I already accepted that it may not be linux-specific in my last reply,
sorry for not extra mentioning it.

What i am talking about is the OutputDevice::EnableRTL(false) call which needs
to be done by the application for each application paint window like the main
view window in Draw/Impress. I do not know exactly the mechanisms at VCL, but
try to call back their usage from memory.

That flag should be set to FALSE and is copied to a new device (maBufferDevice)
when using

maBufferDevice.SetDrawMode(getOutputDevice().GetDrawMode());
maBufferDevice.SetSettings(getOutputDevice().GetSettings());

AFAIK from SetSettings(). The flag influences (AFAIK) the
OutputDevice::DrawOutDev() command to not apply the mirroring to the given
areas.

If it is the case that the OutputDevice::EnableRTL(false) should be done and
SetDrawMode and/or SetSettings copies that setting and the DrawingLayer does
both, i want to claim that DrawingLayer is doing the right thing (what is also
assisted by the fact that it works on local systems).

If this is the case it seems to be an error on VCL-Level (or deeper), i do not
know how i could change or fix that in DrawingLayer.

The rest i wrote was speculation (hardware/driver/linux) to maybe trigger
remembrance of an already known/happened error/problem. I did not intend to make
that speculation fact, i only wanted to assist You.

Fact is that DrawingLayer does what i described above. When You agree that this
should be what DrawingLayer should do, please help with finding the real error.

Just checked Hebrew on Linux and works like a charm. More likely you run into a
problem that Windows are mirrored but VDevs are not.

Moreover I see nothing to indicate that this problem is limited to Linux.

Since this is reported on different hardware and there is not driver involved
anyway other than draing bitmaps, I quite doubt this is linux specific. Whether
drawing layer does everythink right I don't know, but th edit fields work
correctly.

You insist on stating, this were Linux specific, why do you think that would be
the case ?

AW: Upps, the last commit went too fast...

AW-PL: Thanks for Your investigation. Did You hear about that problem ever
before? Overlay buffering is added since 2.1. If not, it seems like it's a
problem with the driver/hardware constellation of nadavkav?

Can You imagine this to happen inside VCL with Your knowlegde of what VCL does
for RTL-mirroring? I have checked that RTL at the original OutputDevice from SD
is switched off (with OutputDevice::EnableRTL(false)) as needed for application
windows. It would not work on standarn unxlngi6 if not.

My knowledge of this field is not deep enough to imagine other possible causes.
DrawingLayer is doing the right thing, though. What other possibilities can lead
to this in VCL?

nadavkav--aw: i have reported this issue with Debain's BTS a while ago
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=439171
since i first noticed it using version 2.2.1
and i also reported it to the hebrew localized OO team. (i can not find the bug
report :-( ) since i thought it was hebrew specific. but it is not!

i get it with english text + LTR text flow + left alignment + slide LTR text
flow.

this issue was reproduced with nvidia, intel, ati (open source) drivers on more
then 8 different hardwares running updated fc6/fc8/debian sid/ubuntu 7.10 OSes.
and on fc6/fc8 LTSP (linux terminal server) systems too.
running OOo versions as follows: Debian OO 2.2 , FC6 OO 2.2 , FC8 2.4 , UBUNTU
OO 2.3

next week, i will find some windows machines and test it out on version 2.2 and
2.4. running ms windows xp.

AW: I agree. I need to check that.

AW-nadavkav: Could You please switch off buffering at Your system and test
without it? You need to change the file
(oficedir)\share\registry\schema\org\openoffice\Office\Common.xcs amd there the
entries OverlayBuffer and PaintBuffer. Both are on true for default. Please
try to switch them off (three possibilites and the default) and test if it
happens. You also need to delete the settings cache in

turning OverlayBuffer_DrawImpress to false solved it :-)

i've turned it on and off several time and cleared the user's cache
to make sure it was that.

i didn't even try the other options: the general OverlayBuffer and the
PainBuffer
should i try them too ? will it help to solve it in a deeper level ?

thanks :-)

AW-nadavkav: Thanks for checking that out. If it works with
OverlayBuffer_DrawImpress switched off this means there is a RTL-Problem with
the involved VDev which takes over the buffering. You can just let it switched
off, so You have a workaround. Only thing that may happen is that overlay stuff
(selection handles, drag frames) will flicker.
I will now check if the needed VCL OutputDevice flag handling/forwarding is done
correctly for the Overlay buffer VDev...

AW-PL: All the needed flags for RTL are copied for OverlayBuffering from the
target buffer window (where they are correct) using:

maBufferDevice.SetDrawMode(getOutputDevice().GetDrawMode());
maBufferDevice.SetSettings(getOutputDevice().GetSettings());

whereby maBufferDevice is a VDev used for buffering only (see
svx/source/sdr/overlay/overlaymanagerbuffered.cxx). When switching
OverlayBuffering off (as described above) the getOutputDevice() is used directly
and it works.

Could You please (or HDU) check if RTL with Hebrew works in general for unxlngi6
(it should, else someone would have complained, hopefully, already)? If yes, it
may be a system-specific (driver or WndowHandler or ...) problem at the user's
system. Do You have some extra ideas for this unxlngi6-specific task?

Thanks in advance!

cl-aw: by looking at the screenshot it looks like a rtl problem with the
drawing layer double buffered rendering

on Debian Sid (updated) with ATI radeon M7 (open source driver) desktop : KDE
i start a new Impress presentation, add a slide and a text box inside the
slide... start to write some RTL (hebrew) text...
NOW, when i move around between the text boxes i start to get artifacts on the
other text boxes and even on the one i am focused on.
the artifacts seems to appear on the text box lost focus event and some time
on got focus even.
when i move around the text box (with the mouse) they appear too.

here is an example :
http://picasaweb.google.com/nadavkav/Screen_capture/photo#5101637840539540098

it is always the same artifacts: a copy of the left side of the screen onto the
right side of the slide (no matter what text box is there)

i have this issue on gnu/linux fedora 8 and ubuntu 7.10 on different hardware.

it happens all the time with different levels of severity. some times i can
circumvent this issue by refreshing the entire Impress or just the text box BUT
on other times i can not continue to work on the presentation/slide :-(
