Hi all
I originally posted this in the OO.org Community Forum and was asked to re-post
here, as this is for all OS's.
I am running Ubuntu Linux 8.04, and have adobe flash player installed. I'm
trying out Ubuntu and OO in order to try and ditch Windows altogether.
However I am new to OO and so am wanting to find out about support for embedded
flash animations.
The problem I had related to receiving an email at work with an attached Word
doc. When opened in the Microsoft Word program (2003 version) on the work
Windows PC it shows a 'Play' button to click on. Then the flash animation
starts up.
I have emailed it home, but cant see any sign of the animation, no 'Play' button
etc, when it is opened in OOWriter ver. 2.4.1.

I eventually found the link to the animation on the internet. It plays when
viewed via the web page (using Firefox on Ubuntu).
This is the link:
http://alanbecker.deviantart.com/art/Animator-vs-Animation-34244097?offset=430commentsorder=2commentslimit=25commentsorder=2

Is this embedded flash feature likely to become part of OO?
Is there a Linux based workaround in the meantime?

Pieter

Please give a detailed step by step description of your action. Does this happen
with all swf files, does it happen without them? Thanks in advance.

Here are the details:
I can save an impress file. If I embed an .swf file then save, I get a write
error. On one occasion I hit save and the program disappears (crashes). It
recovered the file once but it always happens after I embed an swf file. Hope
this helps.

Actually it is possible to have flash files in impress. You just need the plugin
for flash support in your office plugin directory (\program\plugin\). then
insert it using Insert/Object/plugin.
It is another story that swf files in Powerpoint files are not played after
import..

There are a few issues with that. I cannot find a patch for flash support. I
can only find a patch called shapeimporter. Also, even with the patch, the
only types of files I am allowed to see when going to Insert/Object/plugin are
adobe acrobat files (I do have both shockwave and flash players
installed). .swf files are not even available to be viewed. MS PPT swf files
work if they are in the same folder and under properties you embed - yes and
type the filename under movie. In impress I do have them in the same folder.
Could you please attach the patch and how do you get .swf files to appear in
the plugin selection window (Insert/Object/plugin-browse)?

Thanks

Under windows I have copied my firefox plugin (NPSWF32.dll) into /program/plugin
directory of OO. After this I can select the filetype Shockwave Flash in my
insert-Dialog. This works fine.

Thank you very much. Please leave issue up so I can refer others to it. In
summation the solution for embedding a .swf file is as follows:

1) Download (or copy) the file npswf32.dll (http://www.dll-
files.com/dllindex/pop.php?npswf32)

2) Put npswf32.dll in the directory: C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.4
\program\plugin

3) In impress (or other OOo program), go to Insert/object/plugin (then
select .swf files under the dialog box).

I am glad to finally get rid of MS$$$!

One additional (very important problem). Now that I can embed .swf files, it
will not allow me to save the new presentation file. I get the following error
when I go to save:

Error saving the document filename
Write error.
The file could not me written.

What is the problem?

In MS Powerpoint, I can embed shockwave flash objects (.swf) under the control
toolbar (more controls). I did not see any feature like that in your impress
program. SWF files are nice because they allow you to show topics at your own
pace. I am a teacher and this is something that is great for the classroom.
Because I have so many swf files embedded in my powerpoints, I can't view them
in impress. I won't be able to use impress until you have this feature or a
workaround that doesn't involve converting swf files.

I have noticed many open issues regarding this. Is there a way to consolidate
them to this issue? Also, it seems patches are in code. How do you install
patches (text attachments) if you have no programming experience? Are there any
self executable patches?
