The JRE guys know better how to detect old or new versions. For OOo it is to much effort to detect each and every JRE and know if it is older or newer than the delivered one. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90715 User is changed the following: What|Old value |New value Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Jun 16 15:02:29 + 2008 --- JREs can be installed next to each other. With OOo we check in the Windows Registry, if the same JRE version is already installed. If this is not the case, no further check is done. It cannot be part of OpenOffice.org installer to check installation of several JRE versions, if JREs can be installed next to each other. This should be done by the JRE installer itself, which has much better possibilities to detect installed products (via ProductCode, UpgradeCode, ...). But JRE installer does not check this at the moment. ( One more point: It could be possible that OOo requires version 7.1 and does not work with 7.2. In this case, OOo should install version 7.1 next to an already installed version 7.2. ) - will not be fixed. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. However, please note the following from Sun. http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/ReleaseNotes.html#160_05 Update 5 corrected the following security vulnerabilities. The following are the Sun Alerts relevant to the security issues it corrected: 233321 233322 233323 233324 233325 233326 and 233327. This approach of waiting for another party to fix something should be reconsidered. These updates are not just simple upgrades. They often patch security holes. This approach of reinstalling restores those security problems. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I'm not suggesting to change how Java itself installs at all. I was suggesting you check before the installation to see if it's needed at all. If a newer version is already installed then don't run the Java installer. The decision you have taken actually INSTALLS security threats and leaves them open when they were previously closed. If you, however, decide to close the issue again that is fine. However, you should not consider it closed/resolved as the current situation is one that needs to be prevented in the future. In this case while the previous issue related to 2.4.0 and it was elected to leave it since update 5 came out only days before, that was 3 months ago. Now, 3 months later the decision of 3 months ago still leaves it out of date and installs old code under 2.4.1. A check of whether the item needs to be installed would remove that portion of the problem. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=90715 Issue #|90715 Summary|Older version of Java is being installed when newer on |e exists Component|Installation Version|OOo 2.4.1 Platform|PC URL| OS/Version|Windows Vista Status|UNCONFIRMED Status whiteboard| Keywords| Resolution| Issue type|DEFECT Priority|P3 Subcomponent|code Assigned to|of Reported by|dskene --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Jun 13 20:09:36 + 2008 --- If the user already has Java installed and OO is installed fresh (ver 2.4.0) or re-installed after downloading an updated version of OO, Java is installed even if a newer version of Java is already installed. For example, Java 6 update 5 exists tday. Jave 6 update 4 is installed when OO v 2.4.1 is installed. This opens potential security issues which had been closed. Old versions of Java should not be installed if a newer one is already installed. (Ideally, installation of newer versions should automatically remove the older ones but it is understood that is a defect in Java's updates and not OO related.) - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
