The libxml2 dynamic library is part of the stable URE ABI (at least on Linux,
Solaris, and Windows; see ure/source/README). On Solaris, changing from no
symbol versioning to symbol versioning should be a compatible change; on
Windows, the changes should have no effect, anyway. And on Linux the addition
of the LIBXML2_GLOBAL_VARIABLES symbol versioning block appears to have no
negative consequences on ABI compatibility, either: copying a plain DEV300_m84
libraptor.so.1 (which references __xmlGenericErrorContext) into a CWS
solaris10u8 installation set and calling "ldd -r" on that library shows no
problems.

(Only a minor nit,

libxml2/libxml2-global-symbols.patch, LIBXML2_GLOBAL_VARIABLES: a smart thing to
do is to use dots in version names (e.g., "LIBXML2_2.7.3") to avoid clashes with
exported C/C++ symbols.)

status update:
it turns out that building against Solaris system libxml2 is not so easy.

Solaris 10 initially had libxml2 2.6.10.
In Solaris 10 Update 14 it was upgraded to libxml2 2.6.23.

building against libxml2 2.6.10 breaks in libxmlsec (actually in xmlsecurity,
because libxmlsec is statically linked).
libxmlsec calls the function xmlParseInNodeContext, which was added to libxml2
in 2.6.12.
this call was added in libxmlsec in this commit:
http://git.gnome.org/browse/xmlsec/commit/?id=ba1366641cb503fbcac19e04f9dc72eaded818e8
the corresponding bug:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142358
this change went into libxsmlsec 1.2.7.
(btw, there is no libxmlsec in the system on my Solaris box)

options:
1. patch libxmlsec: replace call to xmlParseInNodeContext with a dlsym lookup.
if the symbol does not exist, fall back to previous libxmlsec code.
this would re-introduce the libxmlsec bug when OOo runs on a Solaris system
   older than Update 4.
2. raise Solaris baseline to Solaris 10 Update 4.
3. continue shipping our own libxml2, but build it with versioned symbols.
that should hopefully not clash when both system and our libxml2 are loaded.

currently i'm trying option 3.

> So we are going to abandon libxml2 as well as libxslt for Solaris, right?

yes, i intend to create a cws to build against system libxml2 and libxslt on
solaris as soon as releng has put the missing config scripts into the baseline.

wrt. libcurl.so.4 the situation does not look so bleak:
on my Solaris 10 Update 8 system, i failed to find a library that depends on
libcurl.so.4 (as reported by ldd).

so currently it seems that libcurl.so.4 can not cause problems.
also it seems that SFWcurl package is somehow not part of Solaris proper but
from some kind of Solaris 10 Companion CD, whatever that means.

[of course it may be possible that some future Solaris update ships a library
that links against libcurl.so.4, but right now that is hypothetical]

so it seems to me that it's best to leave curl alone for now.

of course if one is naive enough to trust that dependencies in build.lst are
accurate, one overlooks the other users:
updchk.uno.so is also linked against libcurl.so.4

the libcurl in solaris seems to be highly volatile, increasing SONAME at the
slightest provocation:

 > cat /etc/release
   Solaris 10 10/09 s10x_u8wos_08a X86
 > pkginfo -l SFWcurl | grep -i version
   VERSION: 7.19.5,REV=2009.07.19.07.29
 > ls /opt/sfw/lib/libcurl*
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.a
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.la
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so.4
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so.4.1.1

 > cat /etc/release
Solaris 10 5/08 s10x_u5wos_10 X86
 > pkginfo -l SFWcurl | grep -i version
   VERSION: 7.10.3,REV=2007.04.26.08.02
 > ls /opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.*
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.a
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.la
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so.2
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so.2.0.2

so it seems not shipping libcurl.so.4 is not an option :(

sb found the reason: older solaris versions set LD_LIBRARY_PATH for login
shells.

i've made a little script that looks for conflicts with LD_LIBRARY_PATH
(i.e. where we ship a library that would be found in LD_LIBRARY_PATH):

> python ~/Documents/find_ld_library_path.py SO_m79_DEV300_si
Number of .so files: 453
/usr/lib/libxml2.so.2
/usr/lib/libxslt.so.1
/opt/sfw/lib/libcurl.so.4

ok, so it's not _that_ bad; we already know about libxml2/libxslt, and in
addition there seems to be libcurl.
i wonder what we use that for, and if it also breaks...

"on an older Solaris 10 version it looked like this [...] so the libxml2.so.2 in
the OOo installation is not loaded" At least on one such machine (Hamburg
v20z-so6) this is due to /etc/profile adding /usr/lib to LD_LIBRARY_PATH (and I
do not know whether that is a standard setting for the respective Solaris
version or has been added manually).

OOo crashes on Solaris 10 10/09 (Update 8) (x86) about a minute after starting,
or even earlier if one is adventurous enough to load or store a document.

the problem may manifest as a SIGSEGV in malloc:

(dbx) where
=>[1] t_splay(0x883a578), at 0xfeec521c
  [2] t_delete(0x883a578), at 0xfeec509c

or from another crash variant:
  [13] xmlXPathRegisterAllFunctions(0x8b7d918, 0x0), at 0xf5e55f30

  [14] xmlXPathNewContext(0x8b7c5c0, 0xeed92828, 0xfef9d000, 0xef5a8436), at
0xf5512ed3
is in openoffice.org/ure/lib/libxml2.so.2

it is caused by 2 different libxml2.so.2 libraries being loaded into 1 OOo
process:

(dbx) proc -map | grep xml2

0xf546
/export/home/ms216673/inst/SO_m77_DEV300_si/opt/openoffice.org/ure/lib/libxml2.so.2

on Solaris 10 Update 8, the libraries are loaded like this:
(dbx) c
Reading libsplsi.so
(dbx) c
Reading libsfxsi.so
Reading libsotsi.so
Reading libfwesi.so
Reading libsbsi.so
Reading libsaxsi.so

a bit later:

0xf4e1 /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2
(dbx) proc -map | grep gnomevfs
0xf50e /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so.0.600.0

now we've got two of them.

Reading libjvmaccessC52.so.3
(dbx) proc -map | grep xml2
0xf5a1 /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2

so the libxml2.so.2 in the OOo installation is not loaded.
only the /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2 is ever loaded, hence no crash.

apparently Solaris 10 (our baseline) already ships a /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2,
so the easiest solution for this problem would be to not ship libxml2.so.2 in
OOo installation sets.

i have not checked it, but i have no reason to believe that Solaris 10 Update 8
on SPARC would behave differently from x86 in this matter.

furthermore, i expect a similar problem with the libxslt.so.1: it is shipped
with OOo and with Solaris.
(sb just told me that it indeed also causes crashes)
so libxslt.so.1 should be removed from OOo installation set as well.
