The original document is a HTML file created (maybe) by Excel. The extension for Excel binary files is used and the filter detection does not find binary Excel content in it. So it passes the file to the HTML filter. So it opens in writer and this is absolutly the correct way to handle such files. Renaming the file as .html allowed me to open the table in Calc by two different methods. I could either Right-click the file - OpenWith - OpenOffice Calc, or start up OpenOffice then do File - Open - File Name - Select the Web Page Query (OpenOffice.org Calc) option, then Ok. In both cases I was able to properly open the file using Calc and resave it as .xls to be opened by either Excel or Calc. I will confirm the sensitivity of the document on Monday with the individual who gave it to me, if its not sensitive information, I will attach the original so that you may test it on your end and see the problem that I have been having. In the meantime I will try to reproduce what I did to ascertain how the file can suddenly be opened without a problem.
