Hi,

this is not a bug !

The original document is a HTML file created (maybe) by Excel. The extension for
Excel binary files is used and the filter detection does not find binary Excel
content in it. So it passes the file to the HTML filter. So it opens in writer
and this is absolutly the correct way to handle such files.

to get it solved, rename the file to HTML and use the Webquery filter to open it
via the File Open Dialog.

Sure enough it worked. Renaming the file as .html allowed me to open the table
in Calc by two different methods. I could either Right-click the file -
OpenWith - OpenOffice Calc, or start up OpenOffice then do File - Open -
File Name - Select the Web Page Query (OpenOffice.org Calc) option, then
Ok. In both cases I was able to properly open the file using Calc and resave
it as .xls to be opened by either Excel or Calc. Thank you very much

You cannot open the file in calc, because it is a quasi html-file.

Why this?: I opened this file in Excel 2000 and save it. The save-dialog shows
as filetyp Webside (*.htm; *.html).
When I choosed *.xls as filetyp and saved the file. I could it open in OOo calc.

What do you mean by Quasi html file?

Is there any way to get Calc to open this file without having to use Microsoft
Excel to resave it first.

That's a expression of my own.
I tried to explain this under why this. Excel recognize the document as
HTM/HTML-file and not as XLS.
I see no way to open the file in calc, without saving it with Excel as XLS-
file, but i'm not a specialist in such things.

I've attached the original document that exibited the problem (not the stripped
down one that seemed to lose the problem). Please confirm whether or not you
can open it with Calc. Thank you,

Seeing as you got different results I tried opening the stripped down file that
I attached and your right it worked fine, somehow in the process of deleting
the values in the file I managed to remove the problem. I will confirm the
sensitivity of the document on Monday with the individual who gave it to me, if
its not sensitive information, I will attach the original so that you may test
it on your end and see the problem that I have been having. In the meantime I
will try to reproduce what I did to ascertain how the file can suddenly be
opened without a problem. Thank you for your help and I will follow up on
Monday.

With WinXP OOo opens the file with calc. You should check the assignment of the
filetype in the explorer or try to open the file with 'open with ...' in the
contexmenu of the file an select always open with OOo.

Hi,

used OOo2.0rc3 to check and the file opens up in Calc as expected. So this is a
worksforme Issue and I close it as such.
