It's simply that Excel isn't capable to store language informations for cells. So this is a missing feature from Excel. Calc can not save what can't be saved to XLS format. I start Calc and type some text in a cell - the font language becomes Russian by default (I have Russian version of OOo). 2. I change font language in the Font tab of cell properties to English. 3. I save document in XLS format. 4. I open document - the font language resets to Russian. This issue works for the documents I receive by mail too (so the text was created with English language for the font). Looks like Calc resets the language for any opened XLS document.
