@ccheney: Thank you for pointing at/marking as duplicate.

@mhatheoo: This issue won't be reopened because:
- OOo shows no wrong behavior in that matter (sum up of the discussion in the
other issue: Writer is a word processor, not a text editor ; GUI behavior has
nothing to do with how characters are stored...)
- Even if the present issue would show a wrong behavior, this is a duplicate.

old stuff - and the oo-team still treats this wrong

to my point of view ccheney should reopening this issue.
I draw your attention to this old issue:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=25795

TAB - as it is a character below ASCII Code 32 - needs to be treated as a
control-code.
This is correctly handled within the ODT-XML-file, where it is a tag.
OO.o itself behaves tricky when overruling the expected behavior by treating
this tag as a character - an in the case of OVERWRITING is becomes nasty.
However, control-codes need to be protected from overwriting by accident.

So the QA-team might closes this issue as a WONT because they can not handle it
in an ISO-appropriate manner, but not as an INVALID, as in this case OO.o is
behaving wrong.

my 2cents

Martin

It's a correct behavior. A tab is a character. The overwrite mode must cause
character inputs to overwrite characters next to the input.

- works as designed.

From the Ubuntu bug report:

Pressing the tab key in overwrite mode, deletes the char after point, and
indents. While this is logical and correct, it may not be what the user expects.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Write some text (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz).
2. Move the cursor to the beginning.
3. Press insert to activate overwrite mode, if not already enabled. press tab.

Actual behaviour:
The first letter (in this case the letter 'a') is replaced with the tabulator.

Expected behavor:
Not sure, one of the following I guess:

1. Insert a tab, like insert mode.
2. Skip to next tab stop without changing anything.
3. Skip to next tab stop, deleting all text between cursor position and next tab
stop.

Gnome gedit does 1. Insert a tab, like insert mode
