"Note that it is possible to open the template, save it as a document, and then
save that document over the first template, as a template."

Yep, I noticed that a while after filing this bug (and it works for me). On
win32, the way I know to do it is to right-click on a template file in explorer
and select 'open'. I realise this next bit falls into the "file it as an
enhancement!" logic, but I think that 'open' bit should read differently,
something like 'edit template' instead.

I can confirm that this occurs in all of the applications, not only Writer.

It occurs when using the following steps, as well:

New Document from Template X
(edit Template X)
File>Templates>Save (or [Shift+11])
Select Template X
Window appears:
 "Name already in use.
"Do you want to overwrite document template?"
Click "Yes"
Window appears:
"Error writing document Untitled1 as template:
 "General Error
 "General input/output Error"

Note that it is possible to open the template, save it as a document, and then
save that document over the first template, as a template.
