This should suffice for almost all use cases, except when the target font has an unusual advance width for U+0020. The simplest solution for the distributor would be to add the en-space to the most important fonts. The alternative workaround for OOo would be to implement "auto-glyph-fallback" where some missing glyphs can be implemented by similarly looking ones from the same font.
