This is a general problem with manually changed fields imported from MS Word. In the attached sample, in the field properties there's stored "Default value" which Writer evaluates on import. But Writer ignores the manually changed value, which is not part of the field properties - Writer ignores this. I have attached some screenshots to illustrate this. By the way: please ignore the first screenshot attachment, I used the wrong mimetype for that one. I downloaded my first attachment ("Fill-in OOo import issue.doc") to create the screen shots. They were taken without changing anything to this document. This document has got a Fill-in field with: - "Default Value" as default value - "Testvalue" as value actually filled in by me via the appropriate dialog box. In the screenshot of Ms Word you can see that Word displays the value I had entered the previous I edited this document: "Testvalue". In the two other screenshots you can see that Writer instead always displays de default value "Default Value" and never the value that was entered the previous time the document was edited. So my point is not that the dialog box isn't working. It's true, this works exactly like in Word. My point is if a value was entered into the dialog box, Word saves this value with the fill-in field. The NEXT time you open the document, this saved value is redisplayed in Word, but not in Writer. Writer seems to completely ignore such a saved value. To make things more complicated: - The test document has been generated by Word 2000. - When I open this in Writer, the saved value of the fill-in field is ignored - If I put a new value in the fill-in field via Writer, and save the document again as an MsWord document, both Word and Writer will display the saved value for the fill-in field the next time the document is opened. => So apparently, it's only with documents NEVER edited with Writer that this problem appears. Once Writer had a go at it (even if the document is still saved as Word) the problem disappears. This info could serve as a workaround for some people. For me though, that's not a solution, because I have literally hundreds of Word documents with fill-in fields. I don't know the values I should enter anymore, as they are hidden as by Writer. It would be very cumbersome to manually convert all these files. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. This is exactly the way the document is also displayed by MS Word. When you right click on the field in MS Word and select "Update field" from the pop-up menu, you will get a very similar dialog as in Writer. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. It seems the code for the offending field is roughly this: FILLIN "Please enter a value" \d "Default Value" \* MERGEFORMAT Testvalue It starts with FILLIN, then the prompt, then the default value. The actual value only appears after the MERGEFORMAT keyword. Apparently, this part is being ignored. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. All these documents include a number of Mailmerge Fill-in fields. However, when I open such a document with OpenOffice.org 2.3 (or 2.1) on linux, OOo only retains the prompt and the default value for those fields. The actual content is missing. Instead, it shows the default text for that field. I will attach a simple example document to illustrate the problem. Note: I have searched through the currently open issues, and found that this issue might be related to Issue #56948. I'm not completely sure though, hence this new issue. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
