I'm the minder of the german users maillist and have got an inquiry with this problem by a business user. To me it doesn't seem as a problem of a font, but word stores zero-byte characters in those fields. This will be shown as squares and also is printed in this way. MS Word uses the so-called zero-width spaces in these fields - I can imagine, that the fonts used to display them on certain systems do not contain the character (or the wrong one). When I import them into Writer I have problems with these input fields: Using Win2000 there are some unreadable characters in the grey area. Using Debian the files and the input fields seem to be ok, but when you export them to pdf, you have some text, where the input fields have been. My guess is, that this text is some relict from Words form input field properties. We tested various OOo versions and found that it worked with OOo 2.0.4 and 2.4.1 using Debian.
