This also applies to the font color button, not only the charater and background color buttons. I'm looking to the same behaviour as in MS Office 97/2000. The character color drop down menu, always says that the automatic option is select. The background color drop down menu always says that there is no background color selected. So there is no way of knowing what color of the menu is selected without opening the character/paragraph properties dialog.
