[Alsa-user] PCM volume doesn't change output level in a usefull range
Hello, I recently switched to ALSA 1.0.9 (mandriva 2006). Previously I used OSS with mandrake 9.0 I get this problem : PCM volume control doesn't change audio output level in its full range. I mean : - with my ancient setup, PCM volume control was able to change output level from no sound (PCM volume = 0) to a maximum defined by master volume control - with new alsa, PCM volume control only change output level in a reduced range. (ie, with PCM volume = 0, there is still sound to the speakers) This is quite annoying because most of the applications modify only PCM volume (xmms, xine, mplayer, ...). So each time the output is too noisy, I must launch alsamixer in order to change MASTER volume, because PCM volume control can't change output level in a usefull range. I use ALSA 1.0.9 with a sound blaser live 5.1. I only use the 2 front speaker. I have no special config file for alsa. What can I do ? Thanks for your help, Xavier - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Re: [Alsa-user] volume keeps resetting at play
hello again, i still havent been able to fix the problem of the self-setting pcm_front channel. i have no idea where or how this happens. wasnt able to find anything logged about it, nor was i able to google a resolution or even find a hint in the soundcardlist. this is my soundcard: cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SI7018 ]: SI7018 - SiS SI7018 SiS SI7018 PCI Audio at 0xd800, irq 11 1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART MPU-401 UART at 0x300, irq 10 this didnt happen with a previous install of xubuntu, but i dont quite see the difference or what could be the problem as i now use ubuntu. if i open up a alsamixer i can see the volume go up everytime i play something, resetting just works for the playing song/movie, next title and it goes up again. may this be a gnome problem? i fiddled every option related to sound in gnome i could find but to no avail. someone help me out please, the sound is just terrible this way (distorts when pcm_front sets itself to 100%), and i dont have any other music source then this machine. id gladly try out whatever tip you can give me. thanks, jonas On Sat, 2006-10-14 at 19:56 +0100, sonicx wrote: hy, im a little bit confused - i use alsa for quite some time now, but one of my systems (a diskless ubuntu) keeps resetting the volume of the front_pcm chan to 100% everytime i play something through it. if i play a song, set it to 80% it stays like that till the next song plays and then resets. strangely the mastervolume doesnt act like that and is correctly saved at reboot. it doesnt matter what program i use - as soon as it tries to access the spu anew it set front to 100% again. none of my other systems has that problem. this happends regardless of the nfsroot being writable or not. the homedirs are always rw. also - the gnomemixer crashes when this happens. everytime, if i set the volume down before.this cant be the usual behavior. could somebody point me in the right direction? jonas - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Re: [Alsa-user] volume keeps resetting at play
i just noticed that if there is nothing playing and i start alsamixer first, the channel in question doesnt even appear. it appears everytime i hit play and seems to vanish as soon as i stop. jonas On Thu, 2006-10-19 at 13:48 -0400, Lee Revell wrote: On Thu, 2006-10-19 at 19:47 +0100, sonicx wrote: hello again, i still havent been able to fix the problem of the self-setting pcm_front channel. i have no idea where or how this happens. wasnt able to find anything logged about it, nor was i able to google a resolution or even find a hint in the soundcardlist. this is my soundcard: cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SI7018 ]: SI7018 - SiS SI7018 SiS SI7018 PCI Audio at 0xd800, irq 11 1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART MPU-401 UART at 0x300, irq 10 this didnt happen with a previous install of xubuntu, but i dont quite see the difference or what could be the problem as i now use ubuntu. if i open up a alsamixer i can see the volume go up everytime i play something, resetting just works for the playing song/movie, next title and it goes up again. may this be a gnome problem? i fiddled every option related to sound in gnome i could find but to no avail. someone help me out please, the sound is just terrible this way (distorts when pcm_front sets itself to 100%), and i dont have any other music source then this machine. id gladly try out whatever tip you can give me. thanks, Which application are you testing with? Re: [Alsa-user] volume keeps resetting at play
thanks for your reply. i tried xmms,rhytmbox,mplayer,xine... all the same. even aplay! i just give it a aplay without anything else, let it just play nothing , and it still happens. also, same thing with ossemulation and the meantioned apps. every system sound, every icq-beep, everything sets the volume up. to 99% not 100% as i wrote before. i set it to zero, icq makes a noise, it back to 99... dont think its an application problem, as everyapplication that spits out noise seems to do this. even my beloved quake2. jonas On Thu, 2006-10-19 at 13:48 -0400, Lee Revell wrote: On Thu, 2006-10-19 at 19:47 +0100, sonicx wrote: hello again, i still havent been able to fix the problem of the self-setting pcm_front channel. i have no idea where or how this happens. wasnt able to find anything logged about it, nor was i able to google a resolution or even find a hint in the soundcardlist. this is my soundcard: cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SI7018 ]: SI7018 - SiS SI7018 SiS SI7018 PCI Audio at 0xd800, irq 11 1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART MPU-401 UART at 0x300, irq 10 this didnt happen with a previous install of xubuntu, but i dont quite see the difference or what could be the problem as i now use ubuntu. if i open up a alsamixer i can see the volume go up everytime i play something, resetting just works for the playing song/movie, next title and it goes up again. may this be a gnome problem? i fiddled every option related to sound in gnome i could find but to no avail. someone help me out please, the sound is just terrible this way (distorts when pcm_front sets itself to 100%), and i dont have any other music source then this machine. id gladly try out whatever tip you can give me. thanks, Which application are you testing with? [Alsa-user] Poorly supported HDA intel
Hi all; I'm having some trouble with the sound card on an Asus W5F laptop. When loading, dmesg says... hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC861, trying auto-probe from BIOS... This happens with 2.6.17, 2.6.18, and current hg tip. Now... The problem isn't that I don't have any sound; I do have sound... I just don't have proper controls. There's no master nor PCM, for instance, and the Front or Headphones controls only have the mute toggle. Interestingly, the available controls change from version to version, and sometimes they even change between module reloads (OK, that's understandable, the board may get confused). I already tried the available model= options. They result in different controls being available, and some of them give out scratchier sound. Also, FWIW, I use softvol to get a PCM control. I'm not sure it this card is supposed to have hardware controls, but the fact that the controls change between versions or reloads is strange... Any hints?
