[Alsa-user] No sound when logged in, despite sound at login screen
I (just today) installed a new kernel for Linux to rememdy a few sound problems requiring higher resolution timers than the default Ubuntu 6.10 kernel offerred. Everything, to the best of my knowledge, went smoothly, and I installed the 1.0.14rc4 version of the necessary ALSA modules, considering that I compiled nothing more than the basic sound options (no ALSA, no OSS) into the kernel. (The modules were the driver, libs, utilities, and oss.) The reason I installed the most recent ones instead of, say, 1.0.13 or lower was that all of the previous ones that I tried failed on the make procedure, at roughly the same spots. 1.0.14rc4, however, configured and installed fine. I loaded the snd_emu10k1, snd_intel8x0, snd_pcm_oss, snd_mixer_oss, and snd_seq_oss, after which both my internal Intel soundcard and PCMCIA Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS were recognized by the system. (I've also included those modules in /etc/modules, and they load on each startup.) My issue is that I get sound in the login screen, and the speakers make their usual pop during both startup and shutdown at the Ubuntu splash, but as soon as I log in, in either kernel (2.6.21.1, patched with the real-time preemption patch, and 2.6.17.11-generic, which I was using with sound just fine before), sound disappears. I can use alsamixer fine and adjust the sound, as well as the gui utilities provided by Ubuntu, but no sound is produced in any application or situation (it disappears even before one reaches the jingle for logging in). All I know is that in the terminal, whenever I perform most operations (regardless of if it's audio or just a gedit here>) I get the following messages : ALSA lib confmisc.c:1286:(snd_func_refer) Unable to find definition 'defaults.pcm.dmix.device' ALSA lib conf.c:3510:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such file or directory ALSA lib conf.c:3982:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file or directory ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default Those don't change regardless of the operation, and I haven't encountered any different ones either. As for further information, well, all I know is what's given by running aadebug, as was suggested in the alsa troubleshooting section of the wiki. I've attached the file with the output from the utility for convenience ; just a simple text file. Preferably, I'd like to get sound working soon-ish, and I appreciate any help that can be given. I'll also probably post a similar message to the Ubuntu forums to see if anybody from there can help. ~B. L. All volume levels were back to their defaults, just as expected. But skype still worked basically with the same configuration that I had when it was _not_ working. It is almost like there is an additional place that holds the state that I am not aware of. - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. Thanks! When trying to get a Chaintech AV710 working I noticed that alsa seems to be stateful in just the way you did. My changes would seem to have no effect. I think the way I worked around it was to get things set up the way I wanted and then do /sbin/alsactl store and /sbin/alsactl restore . I would be able to complete the test call as only one side would speak at a time, but a real conversation was a nightmare. First I suspected a duplex issue, but after your answer I tried arecord/aplay combo and it worked. So I looked deeper and found some references to asym. I decided to give it a try and created the following .asoundrc: pcm.card0 { type hw card 0 } pcm.dmixer { type hw card 0 } pcm.skype { type asym playback.pcm "dmixer" capture.pcm "card0" } pcm.!default { type plug slave.pcm "skype" } Skype started working. However I needed !default to be a different card, so I just started testing different configurations of stuff and all of a sudden realized that skype _still_ works, no matter what I do. I removed the .asoundrc, emptied /var/lib/alsa, reordered modules so the skype card becomes card1, shut down the machine completely - skype still worked after everything I did. On one hand I got what I wanted, on another I am really irritated since I have no idea what happened, and how did the change become permanent. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks! I'm mainly interested in the high quality analog stereo playback. Everything else is gravy. Based on the website in my other response, I might look at the driver to see if there is a quick hack to get anything else working. Just from dipping my toes in I can see that this requires some domain knowledge to code; the acronyms and abbreviations are plentiful. I'll have to take that as it goes. [Alsa-user] No sounds with SIS AC97 on Notebook ASUS 6000KM
Hello, i am using a Notebook ASUS 6000KM with Gentoo (Linux version 2.6.20-gentoo-r7)(gcc-Version 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r2, ssp-3.4.6-1.0, pie-8.7.10)). All in all it works fine, but without sounds! 'alsamixer' brings the following: >> localhost henrynick # alsamixer >> No mixer elems found alsaconf starts without errors, but brings only one information, that there is 'no supported PnP or PCI card found'. alsa-moduls are in the kernel and the driver for SIS AC 97 also, but it doesent makes a noise. Re: [Alsa-user] Revolution5.1: can't mute sound
Hello, Sorry for a delayed reply, I was far away from my computer these days. I've tried to test microphone recording, but it seems that I'm using too old ALSA: my alsamixer does not have "Capture Channel" selector. I'll try to upgrade ALSA and test it again. My overall impression from the card is quite positive: sound quality is really great. Playback works out of the box on any distro with alsa>=1.0.13, but there are some problems, some of them seems to be solved in later versions which I'm going to try. > When I was reading them yesterday, the developers said that they have > difficulty with that card because M-Audio is not providing specs.
