The description was correct, but just because a card has a feature, you can't assume that ALSA supports it, because most vendors don't give us the needed specs. It uses snd-ens1371, but as far I know, it doesn't have a onboard synth, too... My USB keyboard hasn't any noticeable latency, but I still have ~250 ms with qsynth. Maybe because I'm running a PIII 800... My dist is Gentoo, my kernel 2.6.14-ck6. I bought this Vivanco-card, because the hompage tells me about a onboard wavetable synth. So I don't trust descriptions any more. Would be very very nice, if somebody simply told me the name/a link of a card, wich plays midi without a software synth. Thanks so far, Lorenz P.S.: sorry for my bad english, i hope you can understand it... ;) --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Do you grep through log files for problems? Stop! Sorry for misleading you into thinking you could load soundfonts onto the Vivanco card. My Audigy2 soundblaster was quite expensive, about £80 UK, but uses the emu10k1 driver, so there is no problem loading soundfonts. There are some quite cheap Audigy cards, but you need to make sure that the one you buy uses, or is able to use, the emu10k1 driver so as to be able to load soundfonts. Perhaps someone on the list would suggest one of the cheaper cards that uses EMU. Nigel. > > > --- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Do you grep through log > files for problems? Stop! The only other place I can find emu10k1 is in. /lib/modules/2.6.10-0.4.rdt.rhfc2.ccrma/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1. there are three object code files here. snd-emu10k1.ko, snd-emu10k1-synth.ko, and snd-emu10k1x.ko which I believe is the card used on Dell computers. I think perhaps I am in the correct directory here, as apart from subdirectories for emu10k1, ice1712, trident, etc, I have some files, and one of these is snd-cmipci.ko. I presume that this is the directory that the module snd-cmipci is being loaded from, if I had a soundcard requiring that driver. This is all a bit academic, but I'd like to understand a bit more about Alsa, where the the souncard drivers are, etc. Nigel. --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. It sounds like your card is like my Audigy2 soundblaster then. You will need to load a soundfont onto the card. If you have the cdrom for the card, the soundfont (.sf2) should be somewhere on it, and you'll need to copy it to your home directory. If you havn't got the cdrom, you can get GM (General Midi) soundfonts from, http://www.hammersound.net . To load the soundfont you will need the package "awesfx" which may or may not already be installed. Then on the CLI, run, "sfxload " without the double quotes. If you cannot load soundfonts onto the card, you could always use Qsynth, which is the front end to fluidsynth, and load a soundfont into that. Incidentally. Which distro, and desktop are you using? If you're using KDE, I have a small script you can use to autoload the soundfont onto the card. Let us know how you get on. Nigel. > > > --- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
