Problem with tar 1.16
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, another problem with my backup with debian testing as a client was tar 1.16. In this new version tar exits with error code 1 (TAR_FILECHANGED) if any file changed during backup. In tar 1.15 it only exited with error code 2 if a file was truncated during backup. With this new behavior backup of partitions containing log files is hardly doable. For now I downgraded to tar 1.15. Is there any possibility for amanda to honor this new tar behavior? - From the NEWS file of the tar source package: version 1.16 - Sergey Poznyakoff, 2006-10-21 * After creating an archive, tar exits with code 1 if some files were changed while being read. For thos who are curious how I did it I provide short step-by-step instructions: 1. get and extract source 2. create operator key 3. create root key 4. put operator passphrase to ~/.gnupg/.pass (beware: this is _not_ recommended, but needed for amrecover) 5. import root-public-key into operator-key-ring and vice versa 6. configure source with: GZIP=path/gpgzip [as attached] ./configure ... 7. install 8. setup amanda 9. make backup 10. check if your index files are encrypted by unzipping and lessing them... 11. check if amrecover works Happy gpg'ing Nicki - -- Linksystem Muenchen GmbH [EMAIL PROTECTED] Schloerstrasse 10 http://www.link-m.de 80634 Muenchen Tel. 089 / 890 518-0 We make the Net work. RE: Ongoing write errors with taper

That might be te point. But even if I use tar or tapetype the errors should make it into /var/log/messages, because the kernel receives a message from the st module, am I right? And the kernel itself writes an entry into /var/log/message wehter the application responds to this signal or not is negligible... But please prove me wrong with this! Maybe the drive needs to be cleaned? Are there other factors (temperature, time of day?) that could be causing the problem? The tape is cleaned every day and as soon as the excessive write errors occur it states that it needs to be cleaned. This is very strange! Re: Ext2, Amanda und dumps larger than 2 Gb
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Nicki Messerschmidt John R. Jackson, Technical Software Specialist, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now, when I try to restore from this tape Amanda fail, because the file it retrievs is bigger than 2Gb ... The first question is, why are you trying to bring the file back from tape to disk? Why not use the amrestore -p option to pipe the output directly from amrestore into your restore program (whatever that is)? I discovered the problem while using amrecover and this exited with something like: An error occured: A child exited with status: 2 I then tried to follow the procedure which I thought amrecover would run: 1. grep the index files for the correct tapes 2. load the correct tapes 3. extract the appropriate image 4. run tar to retrieve files And while trying point 3 the error occured and amrestore exited with status code 2, due to the known 2 Gb limit. ... If it were possible to recover the zipped package from the tape via amrestore or amrecover the problem would be partially solved. As Bernhard Erdmann said, the amrestore -c option will leave the file in compressed form. If it's a tar format image, you should then be able to use tar on it directly. This could really solve my problem until me packed images would not get past the 2 Gb limit, but I really think about upgrading to kernel 2.4.x and reiserfs... *smile* I don't know how to retrieve files from tape via dd or tar manually! As Joshua Baker-LePain said, using dd to read an Amanda tape is covered in docs/RESTORE. It's also covered in: http://www.backupcentral.com/amanda.html You can't use tar directly on an Amanda tape file, but that's all described in the above documentation. Thanks! I will read the manual... *grin* The question I have now is: Why does amanda unzip the file while restoring from tape and does this not while anpacking/taring? It uncompresses the file because many backup programs cannot deal with compressed images (tar is the exception). I don't understand the last part of your question. The last part of my question covers amanda. I wonder why amrecover calls amrestore without the -p option (which, as I read passes the output to stdin of the extraction program). Because if this would be done amrestore won't exit with status code 2! I hope you understand now, what I mean!
