Probably not in the way you'd like (if I'm reading between the lines well enough). As Jean-Francois said, you could use amtape (in conjunction with some changer) to make the robot move. But to transfer the data, it would have to look like an Amanda image. If you want to store and retrieve arbitrary images (data streams) with Amanda, you'll have to let it manage storing the images as well as retrieve them. The DUMPER-API (which is not ready) would make that pretty easy. An alternative is: ftp://gandalf.cc.purdue.edu/pub/amanda/gtar-wrapper.* which overloads Amanda use of GNU tar to generate whatever kind of image you need. For moving the robot, another possibility is the mtx program, which you can find at SourceForge (www.sourceforge.net). I'm pretty sure it has been ported to Irix. And Amanda provides a changer that uses it. So you could use mtx yourself and/or let Amanda run it. >Mark A. Palmer John R. Jackson, Technical Software Specialist, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Works fine, though I can't use the barcode reader at the moment. I haven't played with it extensively though, but I'm sure that with the proper doc Thomas Herper can help you. He did it for me... tape moving commands.
I am an amanda super-newbie. I just got amanda [and on this mailing list] yesterday. Can amanda be used simply to move tapes around and access their various informations remotely? In other words, not to back stuff up. If so, or even if not, is there a better freeware app that can move tapes around in a DLT tape library. the drive is plugged into an sgi supercomputer running IRIX 6.5.10 = Mark A.
