[AMaViS-user] SOLVED! Re: Amavis/SA configured but not processing mail

2007-06-28 Thread Joshua J. Kugler
SIGH, GRR, and other frustrated noises.

I had copied over the config file from an old Debian Sarge (3.1) install, and
hadn't really checked things thoroughly. It turns out that Amavis on Ubuntu
(Debian too?) doesn't even look at /etc/amavisd.conf, but only
the /etc/amavis/conf.d/* files. So, all the changes I had put in the
amavisdc.conf hadn't even taken effect. Once I moved those changes
to /etc/amavis/conf.d/50-user, it all worked find, and I'm getting nice
headers like:

X-Spam-Status: No, score=0 tagged_above=-999 required=6.31 tests=[AWL=-0.000]
X-Spam-Score: 0
X-Spam-Level:

I'm assuming the tests section means actual tests are being run?

Thanks to MrC, Vincent, Gary, and Mark for all your help debugging what turned
out to be a very frustrating problem, but ultimately, somewhat of a PEBKAC
since I didn't understand how the configs were laid out in this package. I'm
used to conf.d being for *extra* configs, not the primary place for configs.

Thanks again...I think (hope) that everything is up and running and working
now.

 Are you still using these old versions? The current

 We are losing details of 2.3.3 from our collective mind,

 hardly anyone remembers it.

Ubuntu Dapper LTS...would rather stick with vendor supported packages if I can

OK

 With $sa_tag_level_deflt  = -999; and

Those are set.

 and spam checks are not bypassed, it should work.

That's what I'd think...I have no idea what I'm missing. It seems like there
would be some config option to say Pass all message through SA. Or is that
he implicit default, unless disabled?

 Is there another
 server downstream removing X-Spam headers?

No, the messages are arriving on the server and delivered locally.

 At this point you probably
 are going to have to raise $log_level to 5 long enough for a message
 to go through. Alternately, you can send yourself a message with your
 sender address in @debug_sender_maps:

 # If sender matches ACL, turn debugging fully up, just for this one message
 @debug_sender_maps = ( ['[EMAIL PROTECTED]'] );

I put this line in the conf file:

@debug_sender_maps = ( ['[EMAIL PROTECTED]']);

restarted amavis, and sent my user on that system an e-mail.

 In your log look for something like:

 Jun 26 20:07:19 sfa amavis[4225]: (04225-01) headers CLUSTERING: NEW
 CLUSTER [EMAIL PROTECTED]: score=-0.155, tag=1, tag2=0, local=1, bl=, s=,
 mangle=

I got:

amavis[31807]: (31807-01) Passed CLEAN, [216.115.115.245] [216.115.115.226]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED], Message-ID:
[EMAIL PROTECTED], mail_id: 3gBKzLCipUuC, Hits: -,
212 ms

So the debug sender maps weren't taking effect.

 maybe something like this to narrow it down:
 grep header /var/log/maillog

Returns nothing.

There is a file in /etc/amavis/conf.d that has the following confusing
language:

# You can modify this file to re-enable SPAM checking through spamassassin
# and to re-enable antivirus checking.
.
.
.
#
# Default SPAM checking mode
# Uncomment the two lines below to enable it back
#

@bypass_spam_checks_maps = (
   \%bypass_spam_checks, [EMAIL PROTECTED], \$bypass_spam_checks_re);

Those two lines were commented out. So I uncommented them. Still no change
in behavior. My config file doesn't have %bypass_spam_checks,
@bypass_spam_checks_acl, or $bypass_spam_checks_re.  I guess that means
they're undefined, and thus not affecting anything?

I'm sorry for all this hassle...I really don't see what I have configured
incorrectly. Do you want me to post my entire Amavis config? I can't see
why this would be so difficult. :) Should I just connect Spamd directly with
Postfix and take out Amavis completely?

 Perhaps we should see the full log now (at log level 5, or: 'amavid debug'
 ) if the above does not help.

Attached is a debug output from one message (I think) using /etc/init.d/amavis
debug.

A couple troubling things catch my eye:

Jun 27 16:49:49 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
lookup (debug_sender) = undef, [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not match

But I have this line in my config file: @debug_sender_maps = (
['[EMAIL PROTECTED]']);

At line 193, there is this:
Jun 27 16:49:49 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
calling SA parse, SA version 3.1.0
Jun 27 16:49:49 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
CALLING SA check
Jun 27 16:49:51 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
RETURNED FROM SA check, time left: 30 s
Jun 27 16:49:51 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
prolong_timer after spam_scan_SA: remaining time = 480 s
Jun 27 16:49:51 mail.warbelows.com /usr/sbin/amavisd-new[32498]: (32498-01)
spam_scan: score=0 tests=[none]

So it called SA...but it gives no results from the call?

I don't think it has to do with message size...even my small test messages
aren't getting any headers.

Thank again for all your help!

 Have you verified that spamassassin is actually being called for the mail

That's what I'm trying to do. In reply to another e-mail, I have these lines
in my config file:

$X_HEADER_TAG = 'X-Virus-Scanned';
$X_HEADER_LINE = $myproduct_name $myversion_id ($myversion_date) at

I have looked through the config file, and I haven't found anything that
enables spamassassin, so I don't really know if it is being called. I guess
my question is not so much about headers as how do I tell Amavis to pass the
message through Spamassassin, because so far I haven't found the config
switch to do so.

 amavis does not use spamd; you do not need to run it. It loads the
 Mail::SpamAssassin modules upon startup.

Cool.

 If you want to use SA, make sure you do NOT bypass spam_checks. In

[AMaViS-user] Amavis/SA configured but not processing mail

2007-06-25 Thread Joshua J. Kugler
Setup:
Postfix 2.2.10
Amavisd-new 2.3.3
Spamassassin 3.1.0a

I have Postfix and Amavis configured and working correctly. Mail is received
by Postfix and sent through Amavis, and is sent back to Postfix, and arrives
in the user's mailbox. I have spamassassin installed and the rulesets
installed.

Using spamassassin from the command line generates output like:

X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.1.0 (2005-09-13) on mail.warbelows.com
X-Spam-Level:
X-Spam-Status: No, score=4.2 required=5.0 tests=MISSING_HB_SEP,
MISSING_HEADERS,MISSING_SUBJECT,NO_RECEIVED,NO_RELAYS,TO_CC_NONE
autolearn=no version=3.1.0

And in my Amavis config file, I have:

$sa_tag_level_deflt  = -999

But I don't see any headers added to the messages. I used
http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/IntegratedInPostfixWithAmavis to help me
with my setup. Can someone point me to something I might be missing?

The FAQ here: http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/ says a possible reason for
this would be @local_domains_acl not correctly set, but the config file I
have does not have that option, nor does the amavisd.conf-sample. I do have
this line: @local_domains_maps = (
[.warbelows.com, 'mail.warbelows.com'] );

BTW, something else that was not clear from documentation: if I am using
Amavis, do I need to run the spamd, or does amavis use the SA perl code
directly as a module?

[AMaViS-user] The ruleset that wouldn't die!

2007-02-08 Thread Joshua J. Kugler
[Possibly the wrong list?]

Several days ago, I started getting warnings about the update failing for
Matt Kettler's AntiDrug ruleset. Digging in, I read the warnings in the file
as well as the fact that the ruleset is no longer used, since being
integrated into SpamAssassin. I've commented out the rule set in every
config file I found, done greps for files referencing the rule set, and fixed
them. Restarted SA, but every day I'm still told the the update failed.
Where is SA getting the cue to download this thing? I can't find any more
non-commented references to it! It's driving me nuts!

Whimper.  Help?

don't want the current spam filter's headers to become part of the statistics

 Is there currently a feature (not a hack) in amavisd-new that allows

Look for $sa_kill_level_deflt in the config file.

  Hmm..thanks for the tip. Right now, we're running 2.2.1...and I not

 Perhaps you will be tempted by the automatic pen pals soft-whitelisting
 which 2.4.2 is bringing :) (favourizing replies to mail, based on previous
 correspondence)

Hmm...neat feature.

At any rate, now that I've upgraded to 2.4.1. [Rather painless, really. Just
had to upgrade Compress::Zlib.]

I notice the config file has lines such as:

$virus_quarantine_to  = 'virus-quarantine';# traditional local quarantine
#$virus_quarantine_to = 'infected@';   # forward to MTA for delivery

Since the config file appears to be a Perl script, more or less, I assume
there is no way to quarantine to file *and* forward it to an e-mail address?

Thanks.

[AMaViS-user] Forwarding innocent e-mail to an e-mail address

2006-06-21 Thread Joshua J. Kugler
I'm in the process of training a new anti-spam tool, and I've looked through
the config file and searched the mailing list archives and haven't found an
answer to this question. If it is there staring me in the face, please
provide a link to the place I should be looking. :)

I have found the places where I can put an e-mail address to which I want all
spam forwarded to, but is there a place I can configure an e-mail address to
which is sent all *innocent* mail? This would allow us to train our system
based on our existing definitions of what is (not) spam.

Thanks.

 Yes, with 2.4.1 you can do it:

 $mailfrom_to_quarantine = ''; # replace sender with null return path
 $clean_quarantine_method = 'local:clean/%m';
 $clean_quarantine_to = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'; # send to mbx instead of a
 file

Hmm..thanks for the tip. Right now, we're running 2.2.1...and I not forsee an
