[AMRadio] Re: Vintage recordings and preservation
Within the next week, I will create a an upload system on the web that will allow those who already have MP3's or WAV recordings of vintage QSOs to send the file directly to an archive so that we can start getting all these in one place for playback. I've developed a MySQL database system that was for use in scientific analysis and observations that I can modify to work more along the lines of this project, allowing users to categorize and/or filter the recordings they want to see listed, such as date range, mode, call-sign, region, etc., all dynamically. It would be a start at least, and I wouldn't have to code a a new system from scratch. So, the bottom line is this; soon after we start collecting enough MP3 files in the archive to make it worthwhile, they will be available for anyone to listen to. Some of you have mentioned that you already have some audio files, so hang on to them and I will inform the group as soon as the upload section is complete and how you can access it. With John's (KB6SCO) contribution in the media transfer/conversion and needed clean-up, I truly think this project could develop into a wonderful resource in amateur radio history. I want to openly thank all of those who have expressed interest in this project so far. The amount of email I've received already has been an eye opener for me to see this through. My time is limited, however I will do as much as I can to keep things interesting. John's gracious offer to convert the media for anyone has added to the reality of this concept. Remember, regardless of the media you have, John can most likely convert it, and return your original. John and I will work together on centralizing the archives so that the audio can be accessed in one place by means of browsing or search-able database queries. All you will need is a player for your operating system, Windows, Linux, etc. that will support MP3 media files. Thanks Again! Re: [AMRadio] Re: Vintage recordings and preservation
A friend of mine had some tapes of WA5FHP in DeQuincy, LA who was on 3950 kHz AM as late as the early 1980's. I wish a thousand times I had made tapes of the AM diehards here in the southeast, like K4AGY,W4AGX,WA4PQH,W4ZWE and others such as Don K4KYV in the late 1960's and early 1970's when I was getting into ham radio. Otis and Ozona Bob were regulars then, too. Re: [AMRadio] You can't always trust those free online translators
Oh, yeah. I was trying to tell the people in my condos not to flush their toilets while the men were working on the sewer pipe. But the translator program told them not to put on makeup at their dressing table! And of course, that was the one sentence I forgot to check. In retrospect, it's funny. [AMRadio] You can't always trust those free online translators
Sometimes those translators don't work out exactly as you would think. Let's try a little experiment. 1. Open the following page: http://translation2.paralink.com/ 2. Choose "English-Russian translation" and paste the following text into the appropriate field: I think we should use CW and the time for best propagation would be 1145 GMT. Press the "Translate" button to get the result. 3. Now copy the Russian translation of the text. 4. Select "Russian-English translation". Paste the Russian text into the appropriate field. Press the "Translate" button to get the result when your translation is converted back into English. :-) Don k4kyv ___ This message was typed using the DVORAK keyboard layout. http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/ http://gigliwood.com/abcd/ __ AMRadio mailing list List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Partner Website: http://www.amfone.net Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net

RE: [AMRadio] Residual Magnatism
I have had that problem with DC relays, but never with ac ones. The magnetic field produced by the a.c. voltage should de-gauss the core, just like a tape de-gausser demagnetises recording tape. A tape de-gausser is nothing but a large coil with 60~ a.c. applied. The worst relays I have encountered with the sticking problem were dc ones, salvaged from ARC-5's and other command sets. I have had limited success with a tape shim stuck across the pole piece. I often operate 110 volt a.c. relays with about 32 volts DC. I have heard of residual magnetism being a problem when running ac relays on DC, but I have never had any problem with mine. If that ever does get to be a problem, perhaps an easy solution would be to periodically reverse the polarity of the dc voltage to the coil whenever the relay starts to stick. I haven't used a Dow-key relay for antenna changeover since my Gates transmitter turned one into a solid block of charcoal. I do use a bunch of smaller ones, built very similar to miniature Dow-keys but with BNC connectors and 28 vdc coils, for switching the VFO between transmitters, and for switching amongst receiving antennas. They were made for military/industrial use and I suspect they originally cost a mint. They have been extremely reliable for me ever since I picked them up in the mid 70's; don't recall if they were in some of the stuff I once pulled out of a dumpster on the Harvard University campus, or if I found them in some odd junk I bought at a hamfest. RE: [AMRadio] Vintage recordings and preservation
Along with the other Volunteers - I'd like to offer my services in regard to restoring and preserving old audio recordings. I have over 20 years professional experience, and a lifetime of messing around with, audio and music electronics. I'm recently retired from 20 years in the film business, all in post-production, the last 10 years as Chief Engineer, MGM Studios. I have always maintained a 'personal' studio (or two), and I continue to do media restoration and recovery for lots of clients worldwide. I can play anything from Edison cylinders on up, and I've made a specialty of restoring damaged media - broken records, partially erased tapes, water/smoke damge, etc etc. I'd be very pleased to offer whatever help I can be toward the preservation efforts of our history and legacy. So if you've got any old cassettes, tapes, wires, or discs, etc., etc., I would like to join the folks here who have generously offered to help with this. I have pile of machinery and devices, and an extensive suite of restoration products, generally as ProTools plugins, and can deliver the Results as downloadable files, or of course CDs or DVDs. [AMRadio] Re: Vintage recordings and preservation
John / KB6SCO has offered to assist in transfer of ANY media that we can muster, from Edison cylinders, wire, any and all tape media and film. John has the knowledge to get this part of it done, as he is an Audio Professional, and spent 20 years at MGM and 10 of which he was Chief Engineer there. John will make a more detailed post later on what he has to offer in getting the media transferred, etc. I for one will really appreciate his assistance and knowledge he has to offer. Now we are not limited to just old tape, which means audio could be made available going back much further in time! Now the issue at hand is to find the vintage recordings. As I mentioned to John, I suspect there are a lot of "old timers" out there who are not on the internet that may have old recordings sitting in a closet or something. Hopefully not the attic. One idea I've had is to run an ad in QST seeking out these recordings. Maybe offer some sort of certificate or gift in exchange for them to loan the media to us long enough to make the transfer to digital. Some may be willing to just give us the media so long as something useful is done with it. Lets keep the ideas flowing for this project. I think it would truly be interesting to most any ham.
