-Original Message- From: Joe Crawford I knew a guy who used a 30 amp variac to feed a 5 volt, 30 amp filament transformer on his quad driven element.Worked real good to melt the ice. Joe W4AAB Joe, This is a great idea but the variac can be much smaller. The current needed is reduced by the turns ratio of that filament transformer. If the primary is 120 vac, then the turns ratio is 120/5 or 24. Therefore, if we take the 30 amps and divide that by 24 we get 1.25 amperes. The variac only needs to be rated for a little over one ampere. I might be tempted to use a light bulb in series with that transformer primary where the current to the load will vary by the bulb wattage rating, and the load resistance. Remember that the resistance of the bulb is very non linear where the cold filament has a much lower resistance than a hot filament. So I'd start with a 100 watt bulb and see if that works. I would not go over 150 watts with the bulb rating though. Having a clamp on AC current probe would be handy in a case like this. I picked another solution to the ice storms. Re: [AMRadio] Re: ICE STORM
I realize that one could use one smaller, but if you got a 30 amp on hand, crank it up. I have been doing this electronics thing for 35+ years, so familiar with turns ratio, etc.It is good to have things like variacs, like the one I got from WA2RQY recently. Nice to put in 0-140 and get out 0-260 VAC!! Re: [AMRadio] Re: ICE STORM
The quad, folded dipole and loop are the only types of antennas that I can think of where this would work. You have a complete circuit with them. A dipole or beam doesn't have that unless you have a balun on them. In that case, the current would go up the feedline to the balun and come right back, doing nothing for the antenna itself. Many broadcast antennas use this scheme, but they are folded dipoles. [AMRadio] Recapping a DX-100
Hi everybody, I recently had a DX-100 fall into my lap. Cosmetically it is immaculate inside. Outside needs a little soap water but there are no scratches or wear marks. AND... No hack jobs or extra holes drilled into it. It came to me with the enclosure too. My questions: 1 - Has anyone created a recap/mod kit for this? The radio needs a recap plus the mods that are posted on the Intraweb. :-) 2- Any good sourced for tubes? 3 - Are there any suggestions as to what the caps or other key components should be replaced with? Re: [AMRadio] Recapping a DX-100
GM Bob, Congrats on scoring a nice DX-100. I don't know of any kits for recapping but there may be some. I've restored two over the past few months including the one I have on the air right now. I bought the HV caps from MOUSER electronics in Texas. Don't expect to replace the electrolytic cans with new ones. I used a couple of radial lead ones for the HV side. Just glued them to the existing wafers (after removing the old caps) and they look very nice and professional. The 20mfd and 40mfd can was left in place and new axial lead caps were used below the chassis. Same for the pair of 20mfd ones in the bias supply. There are those who will say that NOS (new old stock) caps, if re-formed, will work just fine. IMHO, do yourself a big favor and go with new, fresh electrolytics. Chokes and transformers for the old gal aren't cheap if one of the old ones decides to give up some smoke and ash. Tubes? Try ANTIQUE ELECTRONIC SUPPLY in Tempe, Arizona. As for modifications? I'd try the rig in stock condition first. Use a good, non-amplified D-104 or other crystal microphone and give it a try. Then, if select modifications are needed..your choice. While many of the mods will improve the overall performance of the rig, you suddenly won't have a DX-100 any more. And not all published mods work anyway. I've left mine stock, but did use one of the Harbach step-starts and did away with the two-fuse plug and line cord. Replaced with a 3-wire line cord and a single fuse in the hot side of the cord. I get good reports with it and it easily puts out 115 watts of carrier. Hope some of this helps.. [AMRadio] beating ice off antenna
Back in my college days at WUVT FM, we had a 430 watt FM transmitter feeding a 2 bay horizonal polarized antenna. It was on the roof of the 7th floor of a dorm, and the transmitter would blow a screen supply fuse if the VSWR rose too high. So it was routine for the engineer on call (usually me at first, until I trained a few other hams and budding EE's) to go up there and beat on the mast with a 2 x 4 to clear the icing. The TX didn't make enough RF power to burn it off. Later, when I went to work for Broadcast Electronics and helped design the FM transmitter line in the 1980s, we developed VSWR-driven foldback of the screen power supply, a feature which, at that time, was unique in a broadcast rig. I remember a bunch of network OO's in Dallas had gotten hammered with icing, and their FM30s were tripping offline. Our foldback system was applied to the entire product line, you could just watch it reduce power, then it would ramp back up as the ice melted (either for RF or from the weather). I remember getting satisfied reports back from engineers in Texas and Lousiana after they got iced, but stayed on the air through it all. This feature became a standard for all big FM rigs after that, if they had a way to easily reduce power (like a variable screen power supply for a tetrode). Here I just grab the center coax up to my dipole, and pull it a couple of times, and the ice seems to drop off, if it isn't too thick. We don't get the kind of thick rind ice around wires and trees that hit more humid areas. 73 John K5PRO __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

If I were to replace one thing, it would be that wimpy driver transformer. AES (www.tubesandmore.com) has the Hammond equivalent for the Viking II and works just as nice on the DX-100. Also, they are a very good source for tubes but I would suspect you can find what you need at hamfests for a pittance of on-line prices. 1625's were made by the gross and are still found in pretty good supplies. Re: [AMRadio] Recapping a DX-100
Yep, That little driver xformer on the bottom of the chassis, is about 1 X 1. It is usually the bain of the audio section in the DX-100. I had one short to ground and I ended up scratching my head until I did a systematic removal of items from the LVPS. If you don't use negative feedback then you can just replace the transformer. But if you decide to do resistive coupling to the grids of the 1625's then you can eliminate the transformer altogether. Like I said, its the weak spot in the DX-100 audio chain. Mod-U-Lator, Mike(y) W3SLK - Original Message - Mike, Can you elaborate on your comment regarding the driver transformer being wimpy. This is the first I've heard any comments regarding that part of the DX-100. 73, Tom K3TVC __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
[AMRadio] DX 100 driver transformer
What is the Hammond/Antique Radio number/description for the audio driver transformer for the DX 100 transmitter, if you have access to it? Is the DX 100 audio driver transformer the same number and model as the one for the Viking II? I have read that the audio driver transformer is the weak link in the Viking II and doesn't supply sufficient drive for the modulators. Your comments and information will be appreciated. [AMRadio] RE: Why do some people capitalise ham?
I kind of feel the same, I've gotten CB comments before when I've told people I'm a ham, Amateur Radio Operator sounds a little more dignified and actually explains the hobby much more clearly to non-radio people, Bob KB1OKL Personal I prefer that the use of ham, be kept within our ranks. When telling some about our hobby I like to use Amateur Radio Operator. Dave W9WRL _ Climb to the top of the charts!
