[AMRadio] Re: RCA TX on the west coast
Hi Bob, thanks for posting about the RCA. The pictures show a transmitter that has NOT been messed in, very much. I base that on what looks like an intact wiring harness and only a handful of modern spade lugs on visible terminal blocks. Years of undisturbed dust also tell me there was no catastrophic failure that may have caused this transmitter to be put out to pasture. No evidence of fires inside, either. For retuning to 160, 75 and maybe as high as 40, the tetrode 813 might make the move more easily compared to a triode like an 810 or an 833. But I'm not familiar with the drive and tank circuits in the RCA to know how much re-configuration might be needed. I hope it finds a good home. --Paul/VJB __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
[AMRadio] Re: AM on 160m
Perhaps if there are two or more AM'ers within close range of each other interested in operating 160, you could make it a point to meet regularly on some spot outside the usual frequencies of 1885, 1980 and 1985, during static season. That way you will have already established AM presence in that part of the band when conditions begin to improve, before a dead-air SSB group can squat on the frequency. Hopefully, regular activity would attract additional participants. The problem I have here is so little AM activity within a couple of hundred miles of my QTH, that in summer it is rare to hear a comfortably strong signal through the QRN. And even in winter I have found calling CQ outside the usual AM frequencies to be ineffective in attracting other AM stations. My quarter wave vertical with radial ground system puts out a signal that covers all of N America, but even with the beverage receiving antenna, readable AM signals are often hard to find. I don't QSO's in which I have to struggle to receive the other station through the background noise. I think one thing that has hurt 160m AM activity is the 75m phone band expansion. I used to take refuge on 160 because the 3870-90 kHz Ghetto was overcrowded and each QSO had a half dozen or more participants, but now with all the space down below it is easier to simply QSY on 75 than to change bands. I am sure this has not affected me alone. [AMRadio] Filter capacitor leakage
I remember a discussion a while back on maximum allowable leakage in filter capacitors, but don't think this aspect was touched on. What do you feel is the maximum allowable leakage at the capacitors normal working voltage? How does this apply as the test voltage is decreased? For instance, if the capacitor has a DCWV of 600 VDC and you decrease that to 300 VDC or even 50 VDC does the maximum allowable leakage remain the same or is there an adjustment needed? Even though this would not be as accurate an assessment of the capacitor would it suffice in a pinch? Sometimes it's not possible to test the capacitor at full working voltage. Any and all help appreciated. Why don't you get cable like any intelligent person? (LOL) I don't have cable I use the 55 foot tower to hold up ham antennas and a good TV antenna, keeps my wife happy. Over the years I have moved several times and when I installed the tower neighbors all wanted to know what that thing at the top was. I finally wised up and told them it was just a special TV antenna so I could watch stations in the next state. The only person that didn't like that was the lady in New Mexico who said it ruined her view, even though it was not in her line of sight. Re: [AMRadio] AM on 160m
No cable where I have lived in the past 10 years. I have been in rural areas and there may be only two or three houses near me. No only that but we don't watch enough TV to put an antenna on the tower. My poles are used in conjunction with the tower to support dipoles. I like dipoles better than inverted Vees. [AMRadio] TV-7 Testing a 5V4 Question
I was testing a 5V4 the other night. I was suspicious of it because it came out of a Collins 32V-3 with a blown LV transformer. The 5V4 was the LV B+ rectifier. The 5V4 yielded the proper meter reading when the RECTIFIER button was pressed. When I ran through the SHORTS selection on the switch, all short positions caused the NOISE lamp to stay lit. I thought AH HA, the tube is shorted. I put in a NOS 5V4 and got the same reading and short response. Now Im wondering if the TV-7 SHORT circuitry works with the 5V4 tube or do I simply have an old shorted tube and a NOS shorted tube Have you guys tested rectifiers for shorts on the TV-7?
