they were liquidating his gear after he died.

It is amazing how my perception of any given radio from my misguided youth
changed when I get one on the table today :-)

Over the years I've acquired -- and passed on -- almost every receiver I used
as a kid in the 50's/60's -- BC-455, BC-312N, RME 4350A (with SB adapter),
SX-100. The only thing I haven't replaced and tried for a while, and may at
some point, is an HQ-140X.

I have also picked up all the transmitters I used from that era: DX-20, DX-40,
Scout 680, Eico 720/730, Globe Champ 300, and then some. And those I've
restored to working condition and hung on to. Don't use them all, or any of
them frequently any more for that matter, but haven't been able to bring myself
to let someone else have them yet, either :-)

2009-11-20 Thread Bernie Doran
Hi all: James's HRO50 sounds like the oldest so far. I also acquired an HRO
50-1 in the spring and am still trying to get it going. got a 75A2 abt two
moths ago and it is now recapped and sounds great. it is a better rx than my
FT1000 Mark V, that thing hears stuff that is not there!!! always have
mixed feelings about modifying very much, but that is exactly what the
factories did, ex. HRO50 and then HRO50-1. glad I posted that query.

wish I had my heath AT-1 back, 1954, the first six mo, with that was more
excitment that the last 50 + years. I worked at Universal Service in Cols(
Gibby W8IJ) , lived at home, made $1.20 per hour when I bought the 75A4. 3

I still have my original Heathkit "Twoer" that was given (sold fer $15)
to me by my Elmer. I also was able to find the EFJ Ranger that I bought
from Henry Radio in Butler, Missouri, back in 1964 when I got my general
class ticket. The ham that had it GAVE it back to me and even paid for
shipping to my house in Nebraska from Minnesota!

Of course, over the years I have been able to purchase "copies" of most
of the gear I had when I started outplus a few items that I drooled
over but could not afford back then.

Re: [AMRadio] 75A4 and other old gear

2009-11-20 Thread David Hollander
I'm not old enough for gear 50 or more years old but can do over 40
years old.

I still have the Hallicrafters S-41W receiver my dad gave me in 1962. He
bought it new during WWII.

I also have my AN/GRR-5 and all accessories which my cousin got out of
MARS gave me back in 1964 although it was gone for almost 30 years. Sold
it to a local collector here in Phoenix in the 70's and I ended up
getting it back a few years ago. I did pay more than I originally sold
it to him for. He took very good care of it and it still had the Yellow
Submarine and Sargent Pepper decals I had put on it as a teenager!!

Re: [AMRadio] 75A4 and other old gear

2009-11-20 Thread Carl Yaffey
I have acquired several rigs that are like the ones I either had back in the
1950's or WISH I had:
Viking Ranger I
National NC303
Viking Valiant
Heat AT-1/VF-1
Hammarland HQ-140XA
Hallicrafters S-38A

All are working! I've enjoyed putting the Viking rigs on the air on the first
Wednesday AM night.

While it is MUCH older than I am, I picked up a DX-60 and HG-10 Brand
New in the Box at a yard sale for a SK last year. I use it a good bit on
75 Meter AM :-) I also got some new unbuilt kits of Eico Test Equipment
from the same person I put together.

2009-11-20 Thread Grant Youngman
I wish I still had some of the original ham gear. I do still have my first
Heathkit -- a V-7A -- which I assembled circa 1957. Still use it, too :-)

2009-11-20 Thread Bernie Doran
I have a 75A4 that I purchased new as a pup and I was just wondering how
many are out there still in the hands of their original owner, probably not
very many. Now I realize that there is probably someone who has the entire A
line in never opened boxes! anyway, I am curious as to how many pieces of
old gear, say 50 or more years old, are still with the original owner. That
might make an interesting tabulation. any ideas? Bernie W8RPW
