Re: [AMRadio] Johnson Viking II Mods

2010-03-22 Thread Dave Aabye
The best I've ever heard are the Level I and Level II mods described in ER some
years ago.  Both can be done without drilling one new hole (completely
reversible).  I've done them is Viking I's and II's.

I am reworking a Viking II. I see a few audio mods listed that vary in degrees
of complexity. I'm wondering if one is favored over all others.

Thanks,

[AMRadio] Vintage (OLD) Power Meters FS

2008-06-25 Thread Dave Aabye
This is a long shot for sure. Do any of you collect (or sell) old meters from
power distribution systems or the like? By "old", I think the 30's, maybe even
the 20's. A set of nine such beasts was donated to my church's rummage sale,
which is this weekend. I'll send a photo on request from anyone with an
interest. These meters are heavy. I think the set will weigh in at 25 to 30
pounds.

[AMRadio] FS Audio Gear

2007-05-28 Thread Dave Aabye
Folks,

I'm offering the following pieces of audio processing
gear for sale. Please reply to me directly
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) if interested.

Prices do not include actual shipping cost from Oak
Ridge, TN (Zip 37830). I will use UPS or Priority

estimate of shipping cost by assuming a weight of 10
pounds. Each unit is approx. 20 inches wide. Depths
are: Volumax (18 inches), Behringer (12 inches),
others (approx. 6 inches). Heights are as stated
below.

Thompson Laboratories Volumax 4300. Originally
manufactured by CBS, the Volumax units were work
horses of the broadcast industry for many years. The
4300 dates from the mid-70s. This unit was
professionally refurbished in 2001. The 4300 features
both manual and automatic phase reversal and
asymmetric peak limiting with up to 125% modulation in
the positive direction. Panel space is one rack unit.
The original manual and service receipt are included.
 $250.

Marti CLA-40H compressor-limiter. Another classic
broadcast audio processor. Mode selection includes
AM-FM and symmetric-asymmetric limiting. Panel space
is two rack units. Very good condition but no manual.
 $150.

Rane GE-30 Single channel, 30 band graphic equalizer
with separate high cut and low cut filters. Operates
in both cut/boost and cut modes. Output is switchable
between transformer and active coupling. Panel space
is two rack units. Excellent condition with manual
and power supply (wall transformer). $150

Aphex 104 aural exciter. Adds bass and/or harmonics
for richer sound. Panel space is one rack unit.
Excellent condition with manual and power supply (wall
transformer). $100.

Behringer 9024 Ultra-Dyne Pro multi-band processor.
Provides 6 user-defined bands of EQ, compression.
Limiting, etc. This is a very versatile instrument
that can be experimented with endlessly. The latest
firmware is installed. Panel space is two rack units.
 Excellent condition with manual. $100.

[AMRadio] Gates BC-1 Info

2007-02-25 Thread Dave Aabye
Good Morning AM-ers:

I just read Bill's (KB3DKS) post concerning 250 watt
operation of the BC-1T. I'm probably entering in the
middle of a thread, but what the heck.

Two years ago I adopted a BC-1G. Instead of using
series resistors, I opted to use a Variac. Details of
that modification and other information of potential
interest to BC-1 users was recently posted at the
following link:

Who has made similar posts? I'm interested in finding

Fellow AM-ers,

My recent message (Vote on RM-11305), although

For the most part, these pieces are in very nice

I can deliver to upcoming hamfests at Ten-Tec,

Thanks for looking.

[AMRadio] Re: 500 Transformer

2003-02-10 Thread Dave Aabye
Hi Gary,

Yep, it's a bummer!

WZ1M wants $260 to rewind the existing transformer. Peter Dahl sells a
replacement
for $285. I think that Dahl offers a better deal because it is a hypersil unit
with a 500 ma CCS rating. I believe the original is rated 400 ma ICAS. Only
drawback is the need for 4 new mounting holes.

I replaced the tube recitifiers with solid state units shortly after purchasing
the
500 (about two years ago). I also inserted thyristers in the primary leads to
cut
down on inrush current. I wonder if you have any further protective measures to
suggest.

2003-02-09 Thread Dave Aabye
Hello Gary,

Thanks for the suggestion, which I believe has proven to be conclusive.

I hooked my Variac to the primary and slowly increased the secondary voltage.
The caps were disconnect from the rectifiers, so the transformer was "all by
itself". At about 700 volts, the voltage started to jump just a bit. At
maybe 750 v, the secondary emitted a puff of smoke with an accompanying hiss.

I think it is clear that the transformer is shot. Time to call Peter Dahl!

Again, thanks for your input.

[AMRadio] Requium for Tranny?

2003-02-09 Thread Dave Aabye
Good morning all,

I need some advice.

Earlier today my Viking 500 tripped off with the familiar odor that we
have all come to dread. I only lost HV.

After I got the cover off the PS-Mod unit, I was surprised to see
nothing unusual. Then I started sniffing, and that led me to the HV end
of the plate transformer. I removed the end cover and again saw nothing
unusualonly the odor, which by then was beginning to dissipate.

Resistance measurements lead me to think that some windings may be
shorted. One side to center tap reads 110 ohms. The other reads 95.
The manual says 100 on either side. The HV secondary shows infinite
resistance to ground, but that is with no juice applied.

What I'm wondering is whether the 15 ohm difference is conclusive. If
not, what other tests might I make without risking further damage?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Dave, W4QCU

Re: [AMRadio] Which older rig would be easiest to renovate/repair/and get running again properly

2002-11-28 Thread Dave Aabye
Choosing from among the 5100B, 32V3, Apache, Viking I, and Viking II, my vote
goes
to either the Viking I or II for ease of maintenance in the 100 watt class.
Operation is pretty good too. The RF section is fine. Audio can benefit
greatly
from the mods described in the June and July 1998 issues of Electric Radio.
With
those mods, nothing on the air sounds significantly better (my opinion, of
course).
