There is another also. It's called the Classic Exchange...or CX for short.
One weekend for
AM/SSB/FM and the other for CW and held twice a year! Sure...AM and SSB. In
my experience, the
AM portion is very minimally successful. Not many stations on. If someone,
anyone, wants to
create anotherhave at it. My guess is it will be just as successful as all
the other existing
AM contests. It appears those who may be 'wanting' an AM only contest did not
look around the ham
radio web sites enough in their quest to find one such contest. Just my

The 610s were manufactured by Heathkit between 1968 and 1972. They are older
than some of our
recent Hams.. but many of us broke our teeth on Heathkit. Every 610 I get in
here I replace
all the resistors and all the caps. It takes me about 15 hours to undo
replace all the
components. When the Control Pots are stiff or frozen you've got to disassemble
them clean them
up relub. The Selenium Rectifiers I replace with 1N4007 Diodes. I have
really not found any
resistors or caps in the units to spec at what they originally were when first
manufactured.
After all they are 35 years vintage. We all change after those many years. The
lack of trace
wave width (TWW) can be contributed to the .05mfd cap going to pin 3 on
Horizonal Gain Pot which
is a 1 megohm. Also look at the Horizonal Position Pot circuit which has a
.1mfd cap on pin 3.
Like one of the other guys mentioned Look at the Intensity circuit. Also
look at the Focus Pot
next to it. I would replace the 2 Caps and the 3 resistors ( 330k 3.3m ).
If you need the
Mouser Part Numbers please e-mail me I will be glad to Fax you all the Mouser
part numbers. Good
luck. Carl.

Re: [AMRadio] Best Heathkit AM Transmitter

2007-11-13 Thread Larry Knapp
Best Heathkit AM Transmitter

The ‘original’ comment was regarding ‘Best Heathkit AM Transmitter’. ‘Best’ is
a very subjective
term, as we have all seen. References to Viking’s and/or Valiant’s or other
manufacturers digress
from the original comment.

I’ve owned many Heathkit AM transmitters. DX-100B, Apache, Marauder (HX-10),
and DX-40. If one
were to ask ‘what was the largest seller’, that would certainly fall to the
DX-60 series. If one
adds the DX-35 and DX-40 to that, these screen modulated transmitters were the
best selling
Heathkits. One could say these were primarily CW transmitters...a case can be
made for that. But
they did have AM capability.

It seems no ‘olde’ transmitter is immune from modifications…some require
extensive changes
(Johnsons, my experience) others relatively little….to sound good to a ‘purist’
in today’s world.
The HX-10 with no ‘factory’ modifications remains a great choice for those who
like CW, SSB and AM
all in one very stable unit; though it’s not plate modulated AM. The DX-100B I
have, required some
modifications though very little to sound teriffic. I like it’s variable
loading capacitor setup
much better over my Valiant’s or other similar unitsor the DX-100. This is
just ‘my’ personal
preference.

Returning to the exact comment, if one wants the ‘best’ Heathkit AM
transmitter, and if that
comment refers to plate modulated AM, then your choice would be the
DX-100/DX-100B or Apache.
Neither of which require as much modification to make them sound excellent as
needs to be done to
other manufacturers transmitters (my individual experence).

Re: [AMRadio] RG8X and the Bazookie

2006-12-08 Thread Larry Knapp
To all - Everyone to their own taste and experience. Can see reviews of the
same antenna good
and bad (such as on eHam.net); depends upon the environment and many other
factors. As to my
specific situation and my resultsI live in SW Michigan where we get a good
amount of wind,
rain, snow and ice. I do not have my 40 and my 75/80 coaxial bazooka(s) up
very high...apex of
each is about 22 feet...ends much lessneed to get it all higher (yes, I
know)...but...Anyway,
I took down simple wire dipoles for 40 and 75 and put these bazookas up and
have not regretted it.
They are lower noise...super duper significantly lower noise?...nobut
lowermakes 75 and
40 meters more tolerable. Bandwidth on 40 is the whole band (simple wire
dipole was the
same)...for either (on 40) the results have been the same except for a little
less noisesame
height for each. On 75/80 my usable low swr bandwidth is from about 3.510 -
3.925. Above and
below it starts to increase past 2.5:1. So I'm happy with it...works well...in
fact using 50
watts on 80 meters CW I worked ZA7Athat to me is fantastic. So yes, I'm a
happy camper. Your
mileage may vary. Have a great weekend everyone. 73, Larry KC8JX

BTW, hope to see some additional activity on 15 AM this weekend. Conditions
were not too shabby
last Saturday and Sunday. Fireup my DX-100B and NC-303.

Use one on 160 and one on 75 years ago. Claims of less noise and greatly
improved bandwidth were bogus over the same type of single wire
configuration. On the plus side, great wind catcher so you need strong
supports especially if used in a dipole configuration. Also, if your area
is prone to ice storms, larger surface area of antenna is a great
collector. You'll need strong rope. Bandwidth improvement was minuscule
over a dipole. It think Wallt Maxwell had some articles about this
antenna years ago, fact and fiction. Lots of info on the web. If you
get water inside the coax and it then migrates, it will drive your SWR
readings all over the place. After several ice storms, I finally gathered
the antennas up and threw them in the trash can. Wire works just as well.

Re: [AMRadio] Re: Dayton flea market

2006-04-18 Thread Larry Knapp
Though I do not have a flea market (outside vendor) space nor an inside exhibit
space, I did order
three (3) tickets on March 15...received one on April 10. I have written three
emails to the
Dayton Hamvention folks sending two of them to the ticket email address and the
third to the
chairman, vice chair, mailing chair and ticket email address. I received an
email from Frank Good
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), mailing chair saying that he had forwarded my email to the
advanced
registration chairman (Dave Bohlander, KA8RIO). As of today (April 18) I have
yet to receive my
other two ordered tickets. So, methinks there are some problems this year.
Hope it gets fixed
prior to the Hamvention.

[AMRadio] ARRL Bashing

2006-01-29 Thread Larry Knapp
It seems to me with all the skewering of the ARRL, one item that appears to be
very relevant is
the communication to the members of a division and the reverse and thus to the
board of the ARRL.
I believe I've heard something like they don't listen to me or there is no
avenue for comments.
As a member you have the option, that is, make your views known or remain
silent. As a non-member
you also have made a choice. Forums such as this reflector and other avenues
are just that...a
grip and complain session; for the whiners. Real progress is made when people
care, when people
converse, when people have factual data and mostly when there are those who
really wish to be part
of the solution and not part of the problem. Whether one agrees with the two
RM proposals, I
really don't care. But I do care about the relevance of communications to and
from ARRL members.
Those who choose not to be an ARRL member have by default lost that option.
Much as been said
here about the ARRL not caring. I for one don't believe that. Perhaps we,
those in the Great
Lakes division, are just blessed with great leadership. Somehow, though, I
don't believe we are
the only ones. I just have not heard from other divisions, nor do I want to.

If those wish to flame me, fine. I've got a delete key. If you wish to be
part of the solution,
then contribute your views to your own division director.

Note especially the following: ...you will have considerable opportunity to be
heard and once
heard, your input will be considered very seriously. There are those who will
not believe
this...words mean little, action does. We will see. Today is a new
daymake the future count.
 History is just that, history.

Below is the most recent communications to the 'members' of the ARRL Great
Lakes division from:
ARRL Great Lakes Division Director: James Weaver, K8JE

NOW FOR THE BANDPLAN

All references to frequencies contained in ARRL's Regulation Primarily by
Bandwidth petition have
been limited to the where the several bandwidth segments will lie within our
bands. None of these
references said anything about the fine details of band planning -- e.g., where
will Techs be
allowed to operate, where can fully-automatic control be used, etc? There are
still more aspects
to band planning than this, but I think you have the idea. In other words, the
tough work has not
yet been discussed.

More accurately, the tough work just began at the January ARRL Board of
Directors meeting. The
beginning was a discussion of the process to be used in developing the
bandplan. The most
critical conclusion the Board appropriately reached is that we will need a lot
of input from
members and nonmembers alike as we proceed with the band planning.

It is too early to call for input on the bandplan, but I want to let you know
you will have
considerable opportunity to be heard and once heard, your input will be
considered very seriously.
The objective of all this is to develop a bandplan that is logical and has
sufficient buy-in from
the amateur community that it is respected and observed voluntarily by the
Amateur Radio
community.

Just a clarification.the B model and they used 6146s as modulators in
place of the 1625sNo, the DX-100B also uses 1625's as modulators. The
Johnson Valiant uses 6146's as modulators...do not believe any Heathkit used
6146's as modulators.

The biggest difference in DX 100s is the use of a step cap in the output
circuit like the Johnson Valiant used. If you have it there will be a step
 switch to increase the values.

There was a mod kit sold to replace those caps with a variable one and later
versions may have the variable cap furnished with it.

That is about the only differences in DX 100s until you get into the B model
and they used 6146s as modulators in place of the 1625s.

 Which version do you have?

I need a DX-100 manual copy. But weren't there different versions of this
TX? Are the differences such that I need to make sure the manual I get
matches the version I have? How do I tell which version I have?

This one also has an unoriginal knob in the center below the dial. If anyone
has an original knob, I could use that too.

 Thanks.

RE: [AMRadio] DRIVER XFMR UPDATE

2003-02-21 Thread Larry Knapp
Mike - The HV caps should be available though Mouser, www.mouser.comThey
are usually very reliable and inexpensiveand no minimum orders. I can find
the 125mfd/450v ones locally here so I'm sure you can find them around you, or
through Mouser. If it's impossible to find 125 mfd's (which I doubt...they can
be found), then you can put two, say 65's or 75 mfd, in series to replace each
125mfd's.

The cathode bypass caps are easy to find so I always start with them. I am
at some what of a loss as to where a person can find replacements for caps
in the 300 working voltages and on up? Is there a big supply out there?
Particularly like the 150mfd 450wv high voltage caps, I don't know where to
find them so I may pick some stuff up at a swap meet but they are probably
as bad as what is in the rig. Where is the best source?

[AMRadio] Which older rig would be easiest to renovate/repair/and get running again properly

2002-11-27 Thread Larry Knapp
Overall, a very interesting thread. I hope it stays friendly. Not everyone
has all the radios so only those who have actually done something to one
specific radio will have a expert opinion. Thus said, I find transmitters
much easier to work on than receivers...and of the transmitters, I find the
DX-100B better than all my other ones. My Johnson Valiant definitely has more
room underneath the chassis, but since it does not work.my vote goes to the
DX-100B.

Re: [AMRadio] 10 Meter CW

2002-11-24 Thread Larry Knapp
The CW activity is from the CQ WorldWide DX CW contest this weekend. Why they
are up to 29.0 is pretty unreal...if so. Normally during the other DX SSB
contests I do hear the contesters up into or near the AM portion. Yesterday
the CW contesters were pretty much down around 28.0 to not quite 28.2.

The ARRL is the only organized and funded voice that we have. All the
arguments below sound just like this one: I don't vote because all
politicians are bad. Well if you don't vote--or in this case, if you choose
not to support the ARRL, then you are assuredly getting what you deserve.

The management of spectrum and the technologies that use that spectrum are
continuously changing. For better or worse is a judgment call--change is the
 only certainly.

If we want to protect what we have--if ham radio is to survive--then we MUST
have the ARRL or something like it. Example: All TV broadcast stations have
to go digital by 2007. Why not all ham stations? Are we next? If so, you can
 forget AM--and sideband too!

If you believe in and love democracy, then by heaven please vote. If you
believe in and love ham radio, then for heaven's sake please support the
ARRL. To paraphrase Mr. Churchill, the ARRL is the worst form of a ham
organization--except that we have no other.
