[AMRadio] Want to Borrow Original Elmac Manuals

2010-06-15 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi All,

Bob W9RAN has agreed to send me his original manuals for the Elmac AF-67 and
AF-68.

I am looking for someone or someones that have original manuals for the PMR
xx and any other Elmac manuals
that I may borrow to scan. I will be happy to pay postage each way and will
also send the contributor or contributors
a cd with all the manuals on it.

My intention is to get decent scans unlike the DJvue ones currently on BAMA.
No offense meant to the person that scanned them or to the DJvue format.

I am mainly interested in the matching receivers for the AF-67 and AF-68 and
power supplies. However if there are other Elmac manuals please let me know.

I will also print a dozen of each and send to Mike N8ECR who runs the
Mighty Elmac Net so he will have some on hand to give out.

I will also be happy to email copies of the manuals to anyone who wishes to
add them to their website.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [AMRadio] Request for Most Common Capacitor Values to be Reproduced

2010-05-03 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Todd and All,

Instead of re-inventing the wheel why don't we use one of our own who is
already in the business?

I refer to Tom N0JMY at Hayseed Hamfest. The name does NOT reflect the
quality of his products. He is building custom electrolytics but certainly
could come up with a list of common caps.

Tom's a good guy with many satisified customers. I believe we should try to
keep this kind of products from within if possible.

Sorry for the multiple list posting, but time is short and max input is
 desired.

Got a call from a friend this afternoon who is talking with a
capacitor manufacturer about producing some caps for the radio, guitar
amp, and audio crowd. We've talked about this in the past but never
got to it. Now it looks like it will happen.

The question is, what values would be the most handy to have supplied
into the future for restoring old gear? Obviously we can't do a lot of
oddball values as we're mainly looking for values that will sell well
and be attractive from a production prospective. The few that popped
 to mind for me were:

.1, .01, and .47 mfd at both 400 and 600 vdc. I also specified axial
lead instead of the radial leads found on Orange drops since axial
leads are better suited to our needs. I'm looking for other values
that are likely to be encountered often enough to warrant production.
Maybe 6-12 different values to choose from. These would be caps used
for bypassing and such, not filtering. I suspect we could get them
'banded' for the foil side as well if folks feel that is important
 enough.

The meeting is set for tomorrow, so timely input is critical. We're
*not* looking for a list of manufacturers who already make caps as we
believe more is better in this case. Some values are already getting
 difficult to find.

No worries there, Charlie. Rockwell Collins took a different approach
to supporting it's vintage equipment - the following is from
 www.collinsradio.org:

The Collins Collectors Association is licensed by Rockwell Collins to
reproduce and disseminate in electronic and written format, any such
Collins copyrighted documents related to Collins amateur radio products.
Such documents include, but are not limited to, product manuals,
schematics, test methods, service bulletins, advertising materials,
product catalogs, maintenance information and other technical and
product information related to Collins amateur radio products.
Rockwell extended the license agreement in 2001 to include all Collins
Commercial and Military equipment that can be used for amateur radio
purposes. The quality of the scanned manuals is excellent, and if you
need a Collins document that's not already posted, my buddy and Archives
Manager Larry, WA9VRH, will do everything possible to make it available.

That seems to me how it should be, but obviously each company has
control of it's own intellectual property rights. The challenge for
those who purchase such rights is the cost of legal action needed to
 enforce them.

Re: [AMRadio] Low PWR FM Broadcaster

2010-03-16 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Lee and all,

I have a 900MHZ set of cordless headphones that I put the transmitter in the
attic. Feed audio from the CCA Sunday net, DX-60 Net, CCA First Wednesday
net, Mighty Elmac net, NASCAR races and other things to it. We live on 6
acres and it does a pretty good job covering most of it. May need to move
the transmitter up higher on the tower from the attic but may look into a
killowatt amp for the 900 MHZ. Just kidding on the KW but moving the
transmitter higher would really help.

It's a great way to be outdooors working and still be listening to whatever
net etc.!

I use one around here. 100mw??? It has around 10 inches of antenna. I
use
it to broadcast throughout the house internet radio and also a MARS net or
 a
ham band QSO. That way I am not limited to hearing things at only one
 spot
in the home. Mine happens to have come from CC Crane with their logo on
 it.
It covers the house very nicely and sounds great, just like the audio was
put through wires. I use it all the time and love it.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the tip! I had to go look and make sure but my player is an
Edison.. I bought it in Iowa in 1976 but it is not in pristine shape. The
lid needs work and the rest could just use refinishing. Someone later in
this thread mention the volume you could get from one of these and I agree.
I love the volumne control! For those of you that haven't seen one it's a
round puffy ball that slides up into the horn blocking the audio.

Really cool!

 Hi Bob,

Go ckeck out the local antique malls. We visit one in
 Princeton Il about 50
miles North of Peoria that have tons of 78's.

I am always looking for the 80 rpm's that are at least
 twice as thick for
 the windup phonographs.

If you can't find any there is an antique place here in

some. I can stop by there on my way home one day.

I haven't purchased any of the thick records for quite awhile, but used to

have been ruined by playing on the wrong type of machine and scratching them
up.

That may be the Difference.. its a CLUB Station with a License and a
TRUSTEE.. It is the responsibility for the Trustee to be the Control
operator and should be on location( notice I did not say in the Room with
the gear But Must be ONSITE)
an example would Be a club operating Field day. The Trustee of the Club call
is responsible. But usually if there is a Club member who is an extra and
they are operating in the Extra band.
would then be the Control operator On site. Usually the Club trustee is
operating at the site.

To answer your question YES in
 Mesquite. We have
the Police and Fire Corp were hams work alongside
the Police and Fire and have drills on the Police
and Fire Radios and Amateur. This is a very
progressive community. The city does own their own
gear for sure.Brian LOOK at VA.. Va has a Radio,
Amp and antenna in every hospital They have a VA
net weekly. Some VA centers do not have hams but
do have call signs and operate the net. The
Trustee of the station is responsible . They
operate just like the Red Cross and Salvation
 Army.

 Bob,

Don't forget these agencies you mentioned have
their OWN communication equipment, bought and paid
for by the public via taxes. That is why
volunteer hams have been used for decades to
provide communication via ham radio at or near
these agencies. Amateur radio has served the
public VERY well for decades in emergency
communications, and has always been on a volunteer
basis. Why does this need changing now?? Are
hams allowed to conduct drills on the police or
fire bands? Not that I'm aware of.

Why do the public service agencies need our ham
 frequencies now?

If we allow people to be paid money for operating
ham radio, we are losing the very threads the
founding fathers of amateur radio and the ARRL
stood for. What will be next? Dollars for
 working contests?

During an actual emergency of life or death,
anyone, including the Fire Chief can operate ANY
 radio, ham or otherwise...

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Welcome to the First of the FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT 2010!!!

Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday January 6th on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time marks the
start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

The East Coast and Central sections run for 90 minutes in response to the
tremendous participation in those time zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins and
other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving
vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM
Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You
don't have to be running Collins
or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA Please note Bob
will be unavailable but Roger, K5VRX will fill in for Bob (Thanks Roger!)

Looking for an AM Tranvciever. When I moved from
Maine many things had to go. Miss the AM. A
receiver would be great to start with and move
 from there.

[AMRadio] First Wednesday CCA AM Night! Dec.2nd LAST 1 in 2009!

2009-11-29 Thread Larry WA9VRH
FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday December 2nd, 2009 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Local East Coast Time Anchor: Bob W0YVA

7:30 PM-9:00 PM Local Central Time Anchor: Jim W0NKL and Brian K0EFJ

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local Mountain Time Anchor: K0OJ Jim and Chuck KD0ZS

8:00 PM-9:00 PM Local West Coast Time Anchor: WA6FIZ Mickey

We are still looking for additional anchors in the West Coast time zone.
Please contact me if you are interested!

Boy my ears are pinned back on this one. I need a 10 inch speaker for
my old HQ 129 speaker. The cone in the present one is just about gone.

So I thought about shellac and toilet paper or something similar, but am
not that good with my hands. So I looked a couple of places on the web.
I haven't looked for a speaker since about 1959, and needless to say,
one like I would like to have is nearly $100. Now am I crazy or is this
 high?

All I would like to have is a round, mid-range speaker that is 10 inches
in diameter which won't require I sell my home to buy. Can any one
steer me to a place other than what I find on the search engines. The
first 10 pages or so is all full of speaker sellers who pay to be listed
and list only stuff the audio nut would buy.

 Jeeze!

That thought crossed my mind Larry, but I always thought the price of
reconing would be more than replacement cost. Now I wonder and if I
don't find anything, I will look around for someone that recones.

 Thanks for the suggestion

Subject: Re: [AMRadio] FTP Program

 Hi Jim Tonne and gang,

I used Smart FTP for years and when I bought a new computer
recently, I noticed that they wanted to charge for the program. I
can't afford on my budget to pay for a program that I will not use
much and I don't maintain a web page so there is no need to
purchase one for my limited purposes.

So I downloaded FileZilla which I found to be easy to use and quite
a nice program. I tried to upload the manual to BAMA but could
never connect to the upload folder. Ken explained the FileZilla
along with several other FTP programs have a tendency to worm around
in an FTP server by establishing two connections and because many
people try to download the entire BAMA site, SBC has prohibited it
along with several other FTP programs.

Clay mentioned the resident FTP part of DOS and I must confess there
are so many commands in DOS that I have forgotten that I probably
would die before relearning how to use it. So now I have confessed.
As for Netscape-Firefox and other browsers, I have used them before
but never have liked them The last time I used Firefox it locked my
computer and it took a while to get it going again. So I am stuck
with IE which I do fine using, and, thankfully, there are people
like Jim//WB2FCN who will help a poor boy.

So if you guys want to upload or download using the SBC site, be
sure to read the directions. Ken mentions several things about FTP
programs and the use of Windows Explorer that you should know. Ken
and the host (SBC) is very kind to provide this service to us and I
want to publically thank him and them. Believe me having a public
and popular site like BAMA is a headache for which, they aren't
paid. I scanned and sent my manual because some guys said the
quality of the current one wasn't good. So if you have manuals that
fit Ken's requirements, his is most accommodating and great to work
with on this project. He is also a great AM person too.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and help.

I use FileZilla 3.2.6.1 ( i.e., current version) and am very
pleased with it. Quite capable, free, easy to use.

I agree that getting all the Is dotted and the Ts crossed in
the initial setup of an FTP program is the most difficult
 part.

Re: [AMRadio] Info needed: KWT-6 (AN/URC-32)

2009-06-18 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Hal,

I would suggest posting a messgae on the Collins Collectors Association
website www.collinsradio.org to see if you can find a manual.

There is one manual in the CCA Archives but I believe if I remember
correctly it deals only with the individual modules and nothing specific.

If you find something please let me know.

Help! I am hoping to restore a 1960s Collins HF linear amplifier for
use with a TMC AM exciter. Does anyone on this list have the manual for
the Collins KWT-6 (AN/URC-32) transmitter, either the entire manual
or just the section that covers the linear amplifier unit
(AM-2061/URT) and the section that covers the antenna
coupler/wattmeter unit (180U-2), their schematics, how the PA cooling
is adjusted, and how they are connected. I am interested in either
the original or photocopies of the above sections. Will buy or rent
to do my own photocopying of relevant pages and then return the
original!! The entire manual probably has too many pages to copy.

Also a basic Google search on 20V-3 provided a wealth of places to look.

2009-04-19 Thread Larry WA9VRH
HI Guys,

You know what??

Here is a person asking an honest question (and I may be wrong)

But all you give him back is bullshit! What the hell are you thinking??

Dayton will probably be down a lot this year. Me no I will not be there as
I just went back to work after a 3 month lay off.

Why are you trying to discourage someone from going?? Do you want it to
fail for GOOD

Well if so go to H... I want to be back there next year! NO I don't go
to make a fourtune I go to see friends. Probably something you narrow
minded people do not understand.

If you don't like Dayton STAY HOME! We who enjoy it will NOT care!

I would give my left NUT to be there to see all the friends that I will not
be able to see this year... I wonder how many will not be there next year
for me to see.Any of you jerks ever thought of that???

Bill N4BKT I am sorry for our fellow hams that are a sorry sort. Please
wait for the reply from that Hamvention as I believe they will give you a
negative answer. But at least it won't be full of answers comming out of
assholes instead of brains.

73 Larry WA9VRH

Sorry but I have to post this to other list to keep ths crap in line. We
don't need to trash Dayton we need to help keep it going because it probably
will never be able to be replaced!

Re: [AMRadio] The Great Rochester Hamfest

2009-01-24 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi All,

Well you better kiss and make up or the Great Rochester Hamfest will
probably be gone in a couple of years. Before you shoot me let me explain.
For more years than I will put in print (in case my wife sees this) I was
the chairman for the Peoria Il Superfest. For years we were on our own date.

Then something happened and Radio Expo in Chicago ended up on the same
weekend. We were locked into our weekend as a few years eariler the
fairgrounds moved us without telling us. Well we threw a fit and they agreed
NEVER to change our date again. (which they have lived up to)

So for a number of years we butted heads with R.E. However even though
Peoria is much smaller in population we still maintained most of our
attendance. R.E. did ok also but we both had issues with dealers that wanted
to be at both but did not have enough staff to do both.

Well finally last year or the year before R.E. changed facilities and we are
on different dates. We in Peoria have seen a growth in attendance even
though hamfests in general are shrinking.

We believe that both RE and Peoria will continue to prosper without the
conflict of the same dates.

So GUYS and GALS knock off the BS and kiss and make up before the Great
Rochester hamfest becomes nothing more than memories!

Neither of you will win in this pissing contest (technical term) You will
tear friendships apart, you will make dealers make choices that they don't
want to make (and they may not show up at either show) NO one is going to
win. ESPECIALLY when you are in the same town!

I hope for ALL you can straighten this out as we do not need another hamfest
to go SK!

 Hello,

I looked at both sites, and here is what I noticed:

The New Rochester Hamfest is being put on by the Rochester Amateur
 Radio Association.

The New Rochester Hamfest is recognized by the ARRL, listed by the
ARRL as the only Rochester Hamfest on that date, and is the site of
 the ARRL Atlantic Division Convention.

The Original Rochester Hamfest site is displaying 2008 information,
with the notation that 2009 information will be given when it is
 Available.

The Original Hamfest is on Friday and Saturday.
The New Hamfest is on Saturday only.
So, you could go to the Original Hamfest on Friday,
and the New Hamfest on Saturday.

A little history: The Rochester Hamfest was the largest hamfest in
the eastern US. Before last year's Hamfest, a large part of the
original fairground location was sold, and the formerly giant flea
market was relocated into a much smaller space. Attendance was poor,
and many hams thought that the Rochester Hamfest was finished.

The move to a new location with space for a another giant flea market
is a wonderful thing. Now we can once again look forward to more
 great Rochester Hamfests.

 Check it out - group 1 www.rochesterham.org http://www.rochesterham.org

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The

zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins

vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial
designs. Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by
the time it concludes at 10:00 PM

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You

Hi all,

After talking to a number of people it appears that the Dayton folks are
not sending out via mail the information

for the flea market.

So if you go here:

http://www.hamvention.org/hv2008/flea/index.html

You can print out the application for the flea market and mail it in. I
have also been told that the some of the links don't work

and so it appears that the mail is the best choice.
Not bad mouthing the Dayton crew but just want to see you all there.

[AMRadio] CCA First Wednesday AM Night Feb 6th!

2008-02-03 Thread Larry WA9VRH

FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday February 6th,2008 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time
marks the start of the latest
chapter of First Wednesday AM Night, drawing hundreds of vintage stations
from across the country.

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The
East Coast and Central sections run
for 90 minutes in response to the tremendous participation in those time
zones. The remaining time zones
will be an hour. We encourage stations to check-in on AM using Collins and
other AM transmitters, new and
old. It's an opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving
vintage equipment a run, and sharing
some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a
hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM

Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you? You
don't have to be running Collins

or vintage gear to be welcomed into the group.

Re: [AMRadio] HRO-50

2007-11-27 Thread Larry WA9VRH

Hi Todd and all,

Bob W9RAN asked me to download the HRO-50-1 manual from BAMA and try to
print it for him along with the schematic.

Well I did but the BAMA manual was scanned as JPG's and they are pretty
unforgiving.

I would like to see if someone has an HRO -50-1 manual that I could borrow
to scan and provide to Bob and to BAMA that is in a more friendly format.

I will be happy to provide postage both ways and also a deposit on the
manual if needed. I can also provide references to the work I have done on
other equipment archives.

Thanks!

We got plenty of all era HRO's in for service and a jig was not used.
 Once

you got the knack it was easy. The holes in the chassis are there for a
 reason.

Hi Carl!

Are you referring to the holes in the TOP of the chassis for the high-end
adjustments, or holes in tha back of the coil rack, under chassis, for
the

low-end adjustments? Neither of my HROs (a 2.5V heater 1935 model, and
HR0-7R) have the latter, so the coil racks need to be removed for the
bottom-end-of-range adjustments. I do understand certain models had them,
but mine don't :(

I'd like to learn more about this process at some point. I know you
have some experience with the older HROs Larry, and Carl worked for
National for a number of years, so he probably spits pinwheel dials. I
figure between the two of you, I should be able to figure it out.

The rig in question is a '47 HRO C utilizing the HRO 5RA1 receiver.
I'm trying to put together a set of the 'bright faced' coils, or maybe
just find the aluminum plates for the coils that came with the set
(currently a mishmash of types).

The thing was pretty numb initially. Tweaking a few of the coils
ever-so-slightly helped, but there's a specific order to follow and I
know I didn't do this (having no clue what the order is).

All things being equal (good tubes, proper IF alignment), what is the
best way to align the coils?

Hi Ellen,

I think I saw a mention you were on the third floor of your apartment
complex. Is that the top floor? Reason I ask is maybe you should think of
using a screwdriver antenna mounted on the roof. I have had excellent
performance using a screwdriver form my Jeep. Just a thought.

Hi Jim,

So far no troubles. Besides, other than my landlady, nobody else knows
I'm
operating a ham station (I don't want to deal with the nonsense I dealt
with
at the University of Wisconsin in the 80s, when the Cryogenics lab blamed
us

[W9YT- the ham club station] for every little glitch in their electronics
sensors [even when we weren't on the air they just knew it was us
causing

the problems]). So, I operate stealth.

An SB-200 for some oomph - hmmm that's a good idea. I wish I'd thought
about that. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for one as a just in case I
need

to use it, in the ususal places (swapfests, ePay, etc.). As of now it'll
be a work in progress (I hit a major cycle of bills, and money is tight at
the moment).

Well Ellen, I have had that award for many years, back in the early 70s
it was. Most were nice about it and we cleared the problems. Others
were not so nice and I ignored them as much as possible.

If you are having troubles with a Scout then a 200 watt amp won't do
much more than widen the circle a bit. I say go for it and deal with
the troubles as they occur.

As for an amp, look for a Heath SB 200. Runs real well at the 150 watt
level and is Class B. They can be had for reasonable bucks and there is
no issue of having to find a chassis, case and all the parts.

Jim/W5JO

 Hi Jim,

It's kind of hard to do, with me living in an apartment.

But, I have concerns about amp usage, earning me the Worked All
Neighbors award for my apartment building.

Re: [AMRadio] Frequency Question

2007-09-12 Thread Larry WA9VRH

Hi Ellen,

Guess I would think a screwdriver on the roof would be un-noticeable to most
but then your landlord has to deal with all the people. Tough spot you are
in. I remember when I bought my first house in Peoria. I put up my 40 foot
self supporting tower and didn't put antenna's on it. Had two people
complain that I was messing up their TV reception. I asked them to come to
the back yard and see this was only a tower.

Then three weeks later I put the TA-33, 5 element 6m beam and a 2 meter
vertical on top. The feed lines were tucked up under the deck and never got
close to the inside of the house. Again a couple of people complained about
my station interfering with their TV. Once again I invited them to the back
yard to see the cables were not inside the house and there we no connectors
on them.

A few weeks later I ran the cables in the house and put connectors on and
operated for probably 16 years before we moved with no complaints. We moved
to the country and when I put up my new 55 foot crank up tower I did the
exact same process. 15 years later I still have not had a complaint except
from my wife when I wipe out the satellite TV. :) Good luck on your
antenna project.

Hi Larry,

Actually I live on the 2nd floor, but my antenna is basically on the the
3rd

floor level (the building only has 2 floors). Yeah, a screwdriver antenna
would be cool, but my landlady told me to keep things low inpact visually.
If she'd let me (which she won't), I'd run a nice long 150-200 foot endfed
out to the locust trees in front of my balcony. I do use a 60 foot
counterpoise along the baseboards, with an MFJ counterpoise tuner.

 I'm
operating a ham station (I don't want to deal with the nonsense I dealt
 with
at the University of Wisconsin in the 80s, when the Cryogenics lab

blamed

 us
[W9YT- the ham club station] for every little glitch in their

electronics

sensors [even when we weren't on the air they just knew it was us
 causing
the problems]). So, I operate stealth.

An SB-200 for some oomph - hmmm that's a good idea. I wish I'd thought
about that. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for one as a just in case I
 need
to use it, in the ususal places (swapfests, ePay, etc.). As of now

it'll

be a work in progress (I hit a major cycle of bills, and money is tight

at

 the moment).

Well Ellen, I have had that award for many years, back in the early
 70s

Runs real well at the 150
 watt

level and is Class B. They can be had for reasonable bucks and there

is

no issue of having to find a chassis, case and all the parts.

 Jim/W5JO

  Hi Jim,

It's kind of hard to do, with me living in an apartment.

But, I have concerns about amp usage, earning me the Worked All
Neighbors award for my apartment building.

FIRST WEDNESDAY AM NIGHT!!! Sponsored by the Collins Collectors Association.

Wednesday June 6th 2007 on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time marks

from across the country.

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The

vintage equipment a run, and sharing

some storytelling about classic vacuum tube homebrew and commercial designs.
Typically more than a

hundred stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM

  Larry -

The 850A and 852 have the same voltage rating but the plate impedance
for

In other words the inductance of the 850A is 13.6,6.5,1.75, 1 and 0.8

I have a chart that shows capacity to resonate on each band, etc. from

Hi all,

I am rebuilding a B W L-1000-A amplifier deck. The Pi-Network assembly
looks like it has been fried all though the rest of the RF deck looks fine.

Does anyone know if the 852 Pi-Network would be a suitable replacement?

Thanks

Re: [AMRadio] News from Dayton

2007-04-12 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi John and all,

I have been going to Dayton for a long time and I know probably a lot fewer
years than a lot of you.
However Dayton is Dayton and I would hate to be in charge. I and one of the
guys that has gone with me for years
used to be in charge of the Peoria Hamfest. Maybe 5000 folks plus or minus
however many for years.

I try to not get my shorts in a bunch when the group is slow on getting
things out. I can't imaging the mess that it must be having
experienced the conflicts we had at Peoria.

The four of us don't go to Dayton to make money we go for fun. We have two
flea market spaces and we bring stuff to sell but we go for fun.
Two of the people with us are not hams but have been long time friends. They
are into pc stuff. We go and enjoy the company of the flea people
that are around us. We also enjoy seeing people that we only see in person
once a year. Sadly some years we are not able to see some of the people
that we have seen for years because they are no longer with us.

For me Dayton is for seeing friends and acquaintances that I only get to see
once or so a year. We have endured the outhouses in the flea market and them
outside of the flea market. We have endured the temp trailer outhouse that
sprung a leak and barfed nasty liquid through the flea market. We have
endured the snow and torrential rains and everthing in between.

I if gas goes to $4.00 a gallon I understand why many will not show up. We
will do our best because we go to Dayton for fun and we get to see friends.
Please stop by at 1943 and 1944 but be prepared for anything.

Yes, me too Mark. I need to clarify that I DID appreciate the post
about the the Pearl Harbour disaster, and I have humble appreciation
for those who died in their line of duty on that horrible day.

I know at times there is a fine line between wars and politics, but
anytime a solder is wounded or killed fighting for we the people of
this country, and by orders from his commander it saddens me deeply,
but at the same time makes me proud we have such brave men and women
in this country that would give their life for our freedom.

Freedom is not a political thing, it is the only way we should all
exist ...black, white, yellow, purple, red, and others. That's what
my parents taught me, and that's what I believe.

I also know that a lot of useless wars have been fought all over this
planet for thousands of years, but I will never blame those who
actually fought, as a lot of them did what they were told to do.
Pure and simple. That's all I'm going to say, otherwise I will start
getting political, and I would have to kick myself off this list.

With all this, lets get back to AM Radio on the reflector! Any takers??

Wednesday December 6th on 3880 kcs at 7:00 PM local East Coast time marks

The event is anchored by a tall ship AM station in each time zone. The

Everybody seems to get up at the crack of dawn and yack for a few hours
and then disappear as though a propagation broom swept them away.

There is absolutely no one in the 75 meter AM window for most of the
rest of the day. It may not be a great time for DX but surely there is
propagation of sorts and it is being lost.

So, I am taking it upon myself to do what I can to rectify the problem.

Today was the first session of the Midwest AM Noon Net and we had a
 whopping 2 checkins.

This is a call for anyone within reasonable distance of Chicago to tune
in at Noon Chicago time and say hello and use up some of that either
 going to waste.

Hope to hear from some of you tomorrow.

Re: [AMRadio] Phone band expansion

2006-10-13 Thread Larry WA9VRH
Hi Dave,

I think you need to check your antenna ??? I hear lot's of AM activity on
75m (I have to admit I am not on 40m much)

Saturday morning The Midwest Classic Radio Net on 3885 run by Rob WA9ZTY is
on for 2-3 three hours at least.
Sunday morning The DX-60 net goes on for a number of hours on 3880 run by
Mike N8ECR
Wednesday evenings on the First Wednesday of every month on 3880 The Collins
Collectors Association runs their AM Night for 5-6 hours.
On all the other Wednesdays Mike N8ECR runs the Mighty Elmac net that runs
for three plus hours
On every Tuesday evening the SAMRC run by Andy WA4KCY and Sam KF4TXQ run a
swap net that I can even checkin to from Central Illinois goes on for a
number of hours.
Plus in the mornings 3885, 3880 and others are busy with AM QSO's until mid
morning.

Plunk dow a couple of bucks an but an issue of Electric Radio and not only
see some great articles but also get a listing of all the AM nets, swaps and
rag chews that go on across this great nation ON AM!
There are a lot listed! And probably many more happening.

I must haul it away soon. Also, it's 500 miles away and,

I don't even know how much it weighs!

I did a Google (several variations) and don't come up with much info.

Can anyone tell me size, weight, tube line-up, etc?

There will be an RCA 1 KW available soon from the same source. Again,
free.

I have a scanned manual of the 300J however it is missing two pages of
the schematic. I also have a scanned manual of the 21E-21M which is
the 5KW and 10KW version that uses the 300J as an exciter.

I believe the schematic in the 21E-21M manual will give you enough
information to work on your 300J. Please send me your address and I
will burn a CD with the manuals on it. Please let me know if you find a
complete schematic for the 300J. I would like to make mine complete.

Hi Guys,

I have been following this thread and I also agree with Charlie.
My G76 gets great audio reports as it is. I am using a D-104 and have
very good audio reports. I am currently listening to a group on the
East Coast using a a 5 Motorola Micor speaker and it sounds great.
Power out is around 70 - 75 watts into a sloper. I use it to check into
the Midwest Classic Radio net on Saturday morning on 3885, the DX-60
net on Sunday morning on 3880, on Tuesday the Southeast AM Radio net on
3885, and the First Wednesday CCA AM net on 3880. Believe me if it
sounded BAD I would get chastized on the CCA net since I am the
coordinator of the event. (defense if needed) My 32V-3 is under going
major surgery and some day when I am retired it will get finished. We
encourage the use of anything on the CCA net that runs AM and I am
living proof that we abide by that.

Anyone out there using a G-76 mobile? I have the mobile supply and
would like to give it a try.

on AM using Collins and other AM transmitters, new and old. It's an
opportunity to revel in this nostalgic mode, enjoy giving vintage
equipment a run, and sharing some storytelling about classic vacuum
tube homebrew and commercial designs. Typically more than a hundred
stations take part in the evening's coast-to-coast AM event; by the
time it concludes at 10:00 PM Local PST.

LISTEN for the following anchors and stop by to say hello, won't you?
You don't have to be running Collins or vintage gear to be welcomed
into the group.

Bob, do you have a copy of Jay's Pocket Guide? I have a friend in England
that would dearly love to get a copy.

What does the PE stand for phonetically?
