[AMRadio] The zeal to eliminate AM mode on the amateur bands.

2005-09-18 Thread Mark Cobbeldick [KB4CVN]
Having only been active on AM mode for just two short years, I consider
myself to still be a newbie, still not understanding the zeal and
fervor by some in the amateur community to eliminate or totally outlaw
the use of AM mode transmissions in the MF/HF amateur bands in the USA.

...As quoted by one person like using spark-gap.

I look at AM communications as just one of the earlier modes, something
to be preserved, not cast aside.

Could someone more familiar with the issue please give me a better
understanding of why these people are so intent to get rid of this
mode?

To: Discussion of AM Radio amradio@mailman.qth.net

The 10 meter E season has begun.

On Thursday and Friday of this week, I made an AM contact each day
 near 6 PM
on 29.0 with my HTX10. Yesterday, I heard 3 other AM stations, but
 had a
dinner engagement, and was unable to stay near the rig.

Remember to check 29.0 often during the summer E season. Don't just
 listen;
occasionally identify or call cq. If we all only listen, we'll all
 hear
 nothing.

Also remember that if 10 is open even marginly, 15 will also be open.

 See you on the bands.

Re: [AMRadio] 10 meter AM

2004-11-04 Thread Mark Cobbeldick
Thank you to everyone who replied. I have a good place to start.
Going to order crystals for 29.0 and 29.1 next week, then start the
retuning after they are received.

An old ham friend of mine in Georgia just gave me a RS HTX-10 mobile,
which also has AM. I will try playing with that until the CB to 10m
conversion is done. But tube rigs still sound better to me!

BTW: Been seeing a lot of good DX on the FM end of the 10m band lately.
I run converted commercial gear on 29 MHz FM, and run the 10m fm list
on Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AR29MHz-FM/ but have been
wanting to play on 10m AM too. This will be a good start.

I work professionally in the two-way radio business as a Master
Technician at the factory in Lynchburg, VA, and know all too well how
easy it is to get burned-out and not want to tinker with amateur radio
as a hobby. (I was that way for years...) But I grew-up listing to
stories recounted by my Elmer (Santiago, WA4KSD) of the 50's heyday of
10m 6m AM Phone. By mostly staying off the 2 440 repeater bands
and doing something a tad different, the hobby is still fun.

[AMRadio] 10 meter AM

2004-11-03 Thread Mark Cobbeldick
I am active on 10 meters (FM SSB) for some time, but have never
played with AM on this band. Recently a ex-CB (no-code) Tech neighbor
gave me several functional older tube-type crystal controlled CB
radios, which I am considering converting some over to 10 Meters for
AM. Being crystal controlled, what frequency(s) should I have rocks
for? IE: Calling frequency

Thank you in advance...

I am intrigued by the ones you said ran a kw. Those would make
 someone a
nice QRO rig for 160. If you find any more info on those

 please post on the Reflector.

RE: [AMRadio] Converting old 1.8-4.0 MHz AM Marine Radios

2004-09-10 Thread Mark Cobbeldick
WOW !!!

Thank you to everyone who responded via postings and private e-mails.

In answer to Jim's [WB2FCN], I don't have any data on the radios...yet.
 Let me explain:

I work in the land mobile two-way radio field as a Product Support
Engineer Master Technician at the factory in Lynchburg, Virginia.
One of my customers (...and an old ham friend) is the senior tech at
large marine dealer/service shop in Southern California. The other day
while discussing a technical issue with a radio we got chatting about 2
MHz marine radios, and the old AM Radiotelephone rigs. He mentioned
that he had a 20-foot shipping container's worth of the equipment
sitting in his warehouse, the business owner would love to get rid of!
He had pulled a couple of them out recently and they still worked OK!
...Would I be interested in 1, 2 or more of them?

He is planning to move to Eastern Tennessee in the not too distant
future, and would not mind putting a few of them onto the moving truck
for me. This is what prompted my question to the list.

I have a somewhat special place in my heart for AM Phone, and 160
Meter/2 MHz marine radio. When I was about six or seven, I converted
an old (tube) AM Band table radio up to 160m band and the lower portion
of the 2 MHz marine band. The Loop Antenna was glued inside of the
pressed paperboard rear cover. I wrapped several turns of insulated
hook-up wire around this loop antenna and ran it outside to a 100-foot
longwire and a ground. Growing-up down in Miami(Fla) and over in the
Bahamas, I had tons of radio traffic to listen to from all over the SE
USA and the Caribbean! Later in the 1970's when folks started
converting over to SSB, I even built a BFO for the darn thing.

Hearing about all the goodies he had stashed, made me remember the old
days, wondering if I could recycle one of these fine old marine
radios over to amateur service.

...Also, a Big Hello to Joe [W4AAB]: 'Crawfish' it has been far too
long. I hope all is well.

[AMRadio] Converting old 1.8-4.0 MHz AM Marine Radios

2004-09-09 Thread Mark Cobbeldick
Hello to all,
I have a source of old AM marine radios originally used on the 2 MHz
marine band.

These radios still function correctly, most of the 150 watt output
level, with a few 1 KW models.

Has anyone attempted to convert any of this type radio for use on the
160 meter or 75 meter bands?

...Is it worth the effort?
