[AMRadio] Capacitor tester

2008-06-05 Thread Rick Brashear
Has anyone on this list had experience with the Sprague TO-6 capacitor
tester/analyzer? I started to cobble together a little supply and metering
circuit for this purpose, but have a possible opportunity to get the TO-6.
I'd appreciate any insight on the unit.

Thanks,

[AMRadio] Filter capacitor leakage

2008-06-03 Thread Rick Brashear
I remember a discussion a while back on maximum allowable leakage in filter
capacitors, but don't think this aspect was touched on.

What do you feel is the maximum allowable leakage at the capacitors normal
working voltage?

How does this apply as the test voltage is decreased?

For instance, if the capacitor has a DCWV of 600 VDC and you decrease that
to 300 VDC or even 50 VDC does the maximum allowable leakage remain the same
or is there an adjustment needed? Even though this would not be as accurate
an assessment of the capacitor would it suffice in a pinch? Sometimes it's
not possible to test the capacitor at full working voltage.

Any and all help appreciated.

RE: [AMRadio] High Voltage Fuse Idea

2008-05-29 Thread Rick Brashear
Thanks, Todd. I have a couple of searches working on eBay now just in case
they become available. I'd love to find a bulk deal on these fuses. I
found the glass screw in type for the BC-610 at Home Depot a while back and
bought several boxes, but they were anything but a deal!

Thanks,

Just a thought on the fuse, Rick: watch ebay and other online sites
for surplus deals. Several transmitters here use the old 15A
screw-type glass panel fuses which are getting difficult to find as
well as being pricey when located. Found a dealer auctioning them by
the dozens on ebay ~

[AMRadio] Fuse advice

2008-05-28 Thread Rick Brashear
Help, please. I have discovered that Littelfuse no longer has anything
close to the fuse I need for this old Bauer 707. The technician I spoke
with at Littelfuse said it has been out of production for years, no surprise
there. I doubt anyone has such a thing around the shack so maybe you guys
can help me figure out the best work around. The fuse is a Littelfuse
#70201.5, 1.5 amp, 5kv tubular. It is 5 X 3/4 in size. It protects the
rectifier diode bridge in the high voltage supply. As much as I'd love to
keep this original I see I will have to use something else here. Any ideas?

Good idea, Jim. I'll have to check that out. The problem seems to be when

Rick/K5IAR

Hey Rick,

Something just occurred to me, wonder what kind of wire is in
fuseable links used on automobiles?

If that is fuse wire, one could buy one and remove a strand or
whatever you need. Auto parts stores have several different sizes
of the fuseable links.

Does anyone on the board know what kind of wire they use?

That's interesting. I honestly don't think it would matter either way. The

JB Weld does not contain any form of metal. ..

The MSDS shows that the resin portion of the original J-B Weld contains
10-20% iron filings.

Thanks, Gary. There is nothing better than an actual test to make sure of
the properties of a substance. Since it showed a short at 500 volts I don't
think it would like the 2500 volts that will be applied to the capacitor.
Maybe I better go with the silicon just to be safe.

73,
Rick/K5IAR

Well, I could not resist. I have a tube of JB Weld in the shop and for
giggles put some on a piece of Nomex paper. I then dug out the hipot tester
and started to apply a dc voltage to each side of the glob of JB Weld. At
300 volts it started to show a high resistance leakage and at 500 volts went

to a solid short. I would not use it for the application intended on this
thread.

[AMRadio] Oil filled capacitors

2008-05-17 Thread Rick Brashear
Has anyone had any experience with leaky oil filled capacitors? I have
several I have been going through and a couple have slight leakage around
the terminal. I know the oil could possibly have some kind of no-no
properties, but I am more concerned with the mess they make. Has anyone
ever used JB Weld or epoxy to seal the terminals? The capacitors check out
just fine under heavy load, but I don't want that gook all over the
transmitter and I fear if it were to short out it might make a real mess!

Any suggestions? I'm too cheap to just throw them away.

[AMRadio] Dummy Load

2008-05-15 Thread Rick Brashear
I know this has been beaten to death many times, but for the sake of an old
man with a bad memory could we discuss the most economical (very important)
way to provide a dummy load for testing a broadcast transmitter. I have a
few Cantennas, but they get hot real quick at 1000 watts and I'd like
something I could be a little more confident in. If I were to use the
proper number of series/parallel non-inductive resistors at say 100 watts
each, what kind of support system would be best to insure at least a one
minute key down time? Would immersing them in oil or attaching them to heat
dissipating metal with a blower be the better choice?

Thanks for any and all advice you may offer..

RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load

Thanks guys for all the ideas. Well.. except Jim and his idea... :-) It
looks like a surplus unit will be the easiest way. Do most or all of the
higher power commercial dummy loads use blowers and heat sinks instead of
oil? I wonder if there is a formula (that I would be able to understand) to
calculate the needed air flow over a certain wattage load to maintain a
reasonable heat? Probably way too technical for me.

That is what I want to do, but I can't decide if it's more cost effective to

Some time ago I located 12 - 600 ohm 100 watt or more non inductive

them in an air vented box...

RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load

Thanks Jim for the heads up. Actually, I think the wattage would be a
little more than 1500 watts at 100% modulation, so it pays to be mindful of
it.

73,
Rick/K5IAR

Regarding the dummy load power rating, I just want
to be sure y'all know that when the transmitter is
modulated the total power output will go up. Be
careful! A rig delivering 1 kW at carrier delivers
1500 watts with 100% sinusoidal modulation. And,
should you be so inclined, it goes up to 2 kW with
squarewave modulation.

RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load

Thanks Bob.. that's good info. It gives me a ballpark as to how much air I
need to move.
Rick

Well, I dug out the book for the smaller (5 KW) reject load here at work.

Unfortunately, they don't give the dissipation rating of the four 200 ohm
resistors.
And I can't see them without taking the bloody cabinet apart.

But, they're moving 450 CFM across them.
And state a maximum exhaust temp or 237 degrees.
Hmmm did you know that 5 KW is equal to 17,050 BTU/hr ?

I remember the load at the AM where I used to work had six ceramic resistors
about the size of a paper towel roll.
Forced air cooled.
But I don't remember the rating on those either

Dang, guess I ain't much help.

RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load

2008-05-15 Thread Rick Brashear
Hi Joe,

I made that same mistake some time ago thinking I was getting something that
would be useful, but wasn't. No doubt the 1KW carrier is way out of range
for our use, but I like to tune the old boxes up to full capacity to be sure
nothing is going to break or come untied. Sometimes it's almost imperative
to tune them up on the high side then cut the power back to 375 watts or so.

Thanks,
Rick/K5IAR

I made a mistake about 35 years ago buying some non-inductive resistors for

a dummy load. The only place they were non-inductive was at 60 Hz. The
carborundums are not in the category. IIRC, the PEP output would be 4 times
the carrier with 100% modulation, hence, a kW out of carrier(which is too
much for amateur purposes) would be 4 kW out. This is why the 375 watt level

gives 1500 watts PEP(thanks to the 1990 power reduction[sarcasm inserted].

RE: [AMRadio] [AM Radio] BTA1-R Schematic Diagram Wanted

2008-05-07 Thread Rick Brashear
Hi Chuck,

You might check with the David Sarnoff Library as they has a extensive
collection of RCA manuals. I got one there for my BTA1-R2 and it is an
excellent repo that could easily have the schematic enlarged. The link to
the home page is:
 http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/S/htmlS/sarnoffdavi/sarnoffdavi.htm

73,
Rick/K5IAR

I recently aquired 2 RCA BTA1-R broadcast transmitters which I would
like
to put on the air on 160 / 75 Meters. They are both pretty complete and I
have a manual. I am looking for a good quality schematic, hopefully large
and easier to follow than what I have.
I have started to go through the circuits to see what I have and
need and a
better diagram would be most helpful. I'm happy to reimburse for any
reasonable costs for copying / shipping, etc.
Thanks,
Chuck WB3LGG,
Cochranville, Pa.

RE: [AMRadio] ART-13

Thanks Todd.. I have a couple that are doing me no good and it looks like I
have more than I can ever do, so I may as well pass them on to someone who
has time to work with them. Not trying to make a killing just recoup what I
can and move on.

Rick/K5IAR

Picked up a really nice ATC (early Navy ART-13) in November, Rick.
$350 including dynamotor, 160m LF oscillator, calibration book, spare
tubes, modules, and so on.

Sold three that I had: $100 for a fairly complete project set, $400
for the other pair. One was complete and unmodified but had tired
paint, the other was clean with the 160 LF oscillator in it.

Saw a clean one on epay a year or so back with most of the accessories
sell for $500+. Most of the ones I've seen in recent years have been
in the $100-$350 price range. It's the trinkets that getcha.

RE: [AMRadio] RG-6 Coax

2008-01-06 Thread Rick Brashear
Thanks Jim. It doesn't have a number on it that I have found, so it may not
be usable for my intentions.

Thanks for the tip... By the way, I still can't see my original post to
this list since I switched to gmail. I could always see it before. I
checked all the settings at mailman and it should be good to go. I probably
have something wrong in my gmail account.

Thanks,
Rick

From the Belden site:

RG-6/U Type 1532A 6.20 Belden 1/.040? CCS GIFPE DBII/90% AL PE .024 75
16.2 -55 to +80 300

The last number in that list is the voltage rating of Belden RG 6 U for
burial type. So if you run a KW that means your voltage is near 265
volts. This is fine provided you have a good match.

What I am saying is that not all RG 6 is as good quality so one must be
careful. I have seen some RG 6 that I wouldn't put more than 25 watts
into because of the construction. This is particularly true of foam
filled. It melts at a lower temperature than PE. Usually the drop
cable used by CATV people is much better.

Rick...Do not use the screw on F connectors they are total crap...Either
use a good crimp on or a compression fitting... You need to use the
compression tool. I have plenty of the fittings and I can loan you a
tool for a few days.. I also have plenty of RG6 quad shield here... We
use lots of it...The compression fitting is water proof were the crimp
is not...I think I have a few F to VHF adapters as well...If you need to
splice RG6 you use an F81 adapter and I have those as well...

[AMRadio] Antenna Info

2007-12-28 Thread Rick Brashear
Hello to all..

I have a buddy who is searching for an antenna that might be usable on both
marine frequencies and some amateur frequencies with the help of a tuner.
He has a pretty big sailing vessel and wants to utilize the backstay for the
antenna without having to go with the conventional method of placing
insulators in it. Below is a site describing an antenna that seems to fit
the bill, however, we are in deep discussion as to whether it will work well
enough on any amateur frequencies. So, I am asking the brain trust here
for your opinions. If you have a minute, please, take a look and let us
know what you think.

Hi Rick,

Does Ray just want AM elmers? I can think of one who has been a great help
to me. Or, does he want elmers in the traditional sense (as in when you're
a newb and an OT helps you out). If it's the latter, I can't help with
that, since I'm one of those rare birds who didn't have much in the way of
an elmer (my neighbor, the ham, was a creep, so I didn't associate with him,
and the local radio club I took my Novice licensing classes through, had no
followup on the newbies at all), and as such am lucky to still be licensed
(most newbs get frustrated, and give up, if they don't have an OT to help
them).

File a complaint with the FCC, Jim. Since the tech for the manufacturer was

will be the one that gets the FCC rolling.

Well guys I put snap beads around the power cord (about 6 of them as I
recall) and still hear it on several frequencies in the 75 meter band.
It radiates as much as 50 ft. away and I don't think they should have
that much.

On top of that, the frequencies move when the state changes from off...

absolute worst time of year for damage, lost items, and so on due to
the increased load within the same time requirements.

well Im not dead. Not on the air either, but not dead. With the sale of my
precious Globe King 500 I have paid off the last of the doctors after my
health issues in 2005.

So its back to basics. I have a ranger and a R4C. Thats all thats left of
the AM gear.! But I plan on getting on the air with peanut power during the
upcoming Christmas Holidays when I have some time off from work.

recently built a little 6AG7/6L6 40M cw rig and have been having some fun

have a full day to work on it.

anywho, just wanted to say howdy to everyone and hope to work you again real

[AMRadio] To ship or not to ship

2007-11-25 Thread Rick Brashear
I am thinking seriously about selling my Valiant and NC-183 and wonder if I
should take a chance on shipping either or both? The Valiant is very heavy
as you all know and the NC-183 is no light weight. If I don't agree to ship
it will certainly limit the possibility of selling them. What do ya'll have
to say? I received both via FedEx or UPS, I don't remember now, and both
were undamaged.

Apparently not in Derby, KS (near Wichita).

http://hamradiocentral.biz is the website for the store, that is -also-
a Radio Shack affiliate.

I don't get anything from sending someone to their site, but you should
go, just to stop the 'stereotypical' bashing of Radio Shack.

Don't get me wrong - I -know- this is an 'isolated incident', where they
actually might know -something- and give you an answer (which is more
than a blank stare.)
When you go in asking THESE guys for a 10uF cap @ 450vdc, they might
actually know -something- about the part, and they -certainly- know
about HF!

2007-11-22 Thread Rick Brashear
Well put, Geoff. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Pig out! Calories don't count
on Turkey Day!

Rick/K5IAR

As much as I want to agree with you, Mike (simply because it's Dave
;-) he's talking about ending the bickering and fighting amongst hams
in general, whether they're on the air, or not. Also, I gotta disagree
that it's -not- healthy discussion. After 40+ years there's -no-
discussion left. It's just the perpetuation of an old argument that
doesn't seem to have a logical conclusion, for both sides.

Dave also makes a great point about AM'ers being just as guilty as
SSB'ers in knowingly cranking up an AM QSO on a frequency that's 2kc (or
less) away from an existing QSO (regardless of mode).

Just because (collectively) you say Well, I've been operating AM right
here here on this spot, this frequency for 40 years, and ain't no one
gonna run me off... how does that make us any better than those who
crank up a SSB QSO 2kc away from an existing AM QSO?

Bottom line is, we are -all- hams, and all hams, regardless of mode
-should- operate as gentleman (and ladies).

As AM'ers, if we want to operate without persecution then we shouldn't
be perpetuating the 40 year old 'kilocycle wars'. It's time to -move-.

3.720 has been a good spot for some of the NorthEasterners... below 3700
is a great expanse, void of signals and I don't know of an AM operating
ham that doesn't have the wherewithal to upgrade to Extra class. When
the band-warming party occurred (nearly a year ago), there were signals
of all kinds below 3700kc and there was a great QSO that happened on
3650kc. Don's complaint (as valid as it is) is why isn't anyone else
down there, taking advantage of the 'wide open spaces'?

Tired of the back-biting and petty bickering? MOVE! QSY somewhere!

[AMRadio] Slow start crystal

2007-10-18 Thread Rick Brashear
Well, after retracing some of my steps I discovered a high resistance screw
type connection on one of the capacitors in the buffer which seems was part
of my oscillator problem or part of the reason I was getting such low drive.
I also discovered a partially broken clip on the buffer (828) tube socket.
With those two items repaired I am now getting ample drive, not excessive,
but ample to the pa grids. Now I have encountered yet another oscillator
woe. I have three (3) crystals for the 160 meter band, 1885 mc, 1975.15 mc
and 1995 mc. I have the transmitter setup and neutralized for the 1885
rock, however, it seems close enough when I use the other two also. Now for
the problem. The oscillator starts instantly upon transmit when the 1975.15
rock is in use. When the 1895 crystal is in use there is a tiny delay, but
with the 1885 rock there is sometimes as much as a 2 second delay before the
oscillator kicks off. The 1885 crystal fires instantly in other rigs or in
my signal generator. Do you think the capacitance loading of the crystal
has something to do with this? It's a booger bear to change the capacitors
in the oscillator, so I would sure like an opinion or two before doing it.

Thanks and sorry for the long winded explanation.

It doesn't matter as far as the operation is concerned IF there is enough
drive. I'm not getting sufficient drive from either. However, I am getting
much more drive from the internal crystal oscillator than from the Viking
VFO and I found that strange. I would have thought the VFO would put out
more RF than the xtal oscillator.

Rick/K5IAR

as long as it drives the OSC stage and you can manage the required grid
drive for for the final, does it matter?

RE: [AMRadio] VFO vs XTAL

2007-10-17 Thread Rick Brashear
That what I think too, Geoff. I'm driving or was trying to drive the GE
BT-20-A. I think I must have VFO problems. I fed it directly into the grid
of the buffer and it barely produced enough drive to register. I am in the
midst of double checking the buffer stage to be sure I haven't overlooked
something.

Thanks,
Rick

What rig is this in, Rick? MAn, the Viking 122 VFO, at least on the
Viking II, has -plenty- of drive!

I keep my grid drive control down, on 80m, around 2.5 or 3 on the knob.
That gives me around 7.5mA of grid drive for the pair of 6146's (yeah,
Ellen - I've been meaning to send you that correction - Johnson says a
single 6146 needs no more than 2.5mA of grid drive, the pair in the
Viking II needs 7.5mA of grid drive, and I'm guessing (someone tell me
for sure) that the Valiant, with it's (3) 6146's needs around 10mA of
grid drive?) and if I crank the knob up to around 5 or 6, then I've in
excess of 10mA of grid drive on the pair of 6146's.

RE: [AMRadio] VFO vs XTAL

2007-10-17 Thread Rick Brashear
I ran it through a small capacitor before the grid of the 828 buffer. I
appreciate the info Jim and Geoff on the output of the 122. I thought it
should be plenty hot to do anything I wanted. I guess I'd better go back to
crystal control and not take on another project of repairing the vfo at this
time. It was just for a test anyway. I am supposed to get about 100 ma pa
grid current and I'm only able to muster up about 65 ma. However, I am
getting the full 250 - 275 watts of RF out. I just need to level it out a
bit.

Thanks guys...
Rick

I'd look at a schematic of a smaller rig (like a Viking II, or maybe a
Globe King rig.. see how much input is required.

Shouldn't the RF output of the VFO be capacitively coupled to the input
of the buffer stage, anyway?

Some solid state VFOs, and DDS VFOs will need an extra

There are some articles about this on the web I think

RE: [AMRadio] Panasonic microwave oven parts for radio

2007-10-10 Thread Rick Brashear
Thanks John. Great info.
Rick/K5IAR

The light Panasonic ovens that say something like Inverter on the logo are
switchers. No heavy transformer anymore. They provide negative polarity hot
and operate in a current limit mode, not voltage regulation. There is a
website on them, if you search for it, that talks about dissection of one,
and the test results. They are pretty neat power supplies, providing like
1/2 amp of DC at 2kV. But very dangerous to play around with, unless you
isolate, isolate, isolate.

If you do decide to pass on the power supply, I would love to have one to
play around with sometime. Might eventually be reconfigured to make a nice
tube power supply.

[AMRadio] Microwave

2007-10-09 Thread Rick Brashear
This is a tad off topic, but still has roots in radio. My microwave bit the
dust and before I haul it out front for the scavengers is there any part of
it that might be usable in our radio field? How about the diodes? I am
assuming it has some kind of transformer, but it couldn't be much since the
thing is not heavy at all. It's a big Panasonic oven, but the insides don't
look promising. Any suggestions?

Thanks Mike, good ideas!

Others have told me keep the diode. The filter cap is a worthless low
value. The transformer can be used with some mods that are supposed to
be real easy. Nothing wahoo huge but HV for smaller purposes. Nice
blowers in there. Move lots of air. Round glass plates have worked for
sanding crystals by others. Relays galore. You'll see when you get into
it. Nothing real crazy but usable stuff for your collection.

FYI - from Stuart Rohre in another group:

I just got this email from James Musgrove, K5BZH:

Jimmy Waters contacted me today to let me know that
Lewis Cearley died this morning. He has been in
failing health. To make matters worse, he fell the
other day and was placed in the hospital as a result.

I don't know if you might have known Lewis or not, but
I bet you did, he was the owner of Nortex Electronics,
that giant electronics surplus house on the south side
of Fort Worth, I think it was actually in Benbrook.
Lewis was great for information.

James went on to say he is not sure, but thinks the services will be
Tues. Maybe some of the DFW area folks can watch their papers
and let us know.

Several of us were thinking just recently of wanting to visit Nortex.
You can visit it on the web with great photos of how it always has
been. Don't know if there is family who might continue the store.
Lewis was a WW2 vet, James said.

May he rest in peace. He kept the faith, and kept one of the last
large surplus electronics stores like those many of us knew in the
50's when we entered ham radio, (or earlier). I hope someone will
pick up the torch, and keep the store going in its present location
on South side of Ft. Worth, TX.

[AMRadio] RF Choke

2007-10-06 Thread Rick Brashear
I have a RF choke that is supposed to be a 2.5 mh @ 125 ma and 50 ohm DC
resistance. It measures 40 ohms DC resistance. Do you think it may be
giving in to the years of heat it's been exposed to? More importantly, do
you think the 10 ohm deficit would make any difference in its operation? It
appears to be okay, but appearances can be deceiving. It's in an oscillator
circuit so tolerances are kind of tight.

Anyway.. Does anyone have one of the above they would like to sell? This is
the old style four pi wound on a porcelain rod with a screw mount in one
end, but I would take anything I can get that has the same specs.

Thanks,

RE: [AMRadio] Contest signal reports

2007-09-30 Thread Rick Brashear
Bravo, Don! When I ask for a signal report I want honesty. How else will
we know how we sound? If I have a hum, click, chirp or anything else I want
to know about it. Unfortunately, I have peeved more than one contact by
giving honest reports. If they don't want to know the truth, they shouldn't
ask me. I think it's a courtesy to our fellow operators to be honest.

73,
Rick/K5IAR

I am not a quarmtester, but sometimes I will work a few stations,
particularly in daylight hours during a 160m cw qrmtest. The challenge is
to see what kind of signal might make it across unusual distances during the

day, and I don't bother to keep score and usually not even a log.

But I always give honest signal reports. To me, this business of
automatically giving everyone a 599 report is ridiculous, and defeats the
whole purpose. IMO, an operator who has to ask for several repeats to get
the essential information, and then gives a 599 report is a LID!

And the same goes for the automatic five-nines on slopbucket. If they
want my contact, they will have to tolerate my carrier and a real signal
report.
