[AMRadio] Filter capacitor leakage
I remember a discussion a while back on maximum allowable leakage in filter capacitors, but don't think this aspect was touched on. What do you feel is the maximum allowable leakage at the capacitors normal working voltage? How does this apply as the test voltage is decreased? For instance, if the capacitor has a DCWV of 600 VDC and you decrease that to 300 VDC or even 50 VDC does the maximum allowable leakage remain the same or is there an adjustment needed? Even though this would not be as accurate an assessment of the capacitor would it suffice in a pinch? Sometimes it's not possible to test the capacitor at full working voltage. RE: [AMRadio] Oil filled capacitors
Thanks, Gary. There is nothing better than an actual test to make sure of the properties of a substance. That's interesting. I honestly don't think it would matter either way. RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load
Hi Joe, I made that same mistake some time ago thinking I was getting something that would be useful, but wasn't. No doubt the 1KW carrier is way out of range for our use, but I like to tune the old boxes up to full capacity to be sure nothing is going to break or come untied. Sometimes it's almost imperative to tune them up on the high side then cut the power back to 375 watts or so. Thanks, Rick/K5IAR I made a mistake about 35 years ago buying some "non-inductive resistors for a dummy load. The only place they were non-inductive was at 60 Hz. The carborundums are not in the category. IIRC, the PEP output would be 4 times the carrier with 100% modulation, hence, a kW out of carrier(which is too much for amateur purposes) would be 4 kW out. This is why the 375 watt level gives 1500 watts PEP(thanks to the 1990 power reduction[sarcasm inserted]. RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load
Thanks Bob.. that's good info. It gives me a ballpark as to how much air I need to move. Rick Well, I dug out the book for the smaller (5 KW) reject load here at work. Unfortunately, they don't give the dissipation rating of the four 200 ohm resistors. And I can't see them without taking the bloody cabinet apart. But, they're moving 450 CFM across them. And state a maximum exhaust temp or 237 degrees. Hmmm did you know that 5 KW is equal to 17,050 BTU/hr ? RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load
Thanks Jim for the heads up. Actually, I think the wattage would be a little more than 1500 watts at 100% modulation, so it pays to be mindful of it. 73, Rick/K5IAR Regarding the dummy load power rating, I just want to be sure y'all know that when the transmitter is modulated the total power output will go up. Be careful! A rig delivering 1 kW at carrier delivers 1500 watts with 100% sinusoidal modulation. And, should you be so inclined, it goes up to 2 kW with squarewave modulation. - Jim WB6BLD __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load
Hi John.. That is what I want to do, but I can't decide if it's more cost effective to build or buy surplus. I guess it will depend on what I can find. I would like to use the large snap in type resistors like you described if possible. Thanks for the tip.. Rick/K5IAR Hi Rick: Some time ago I located 12 - 600 ohm 100 watt or more non inductive resistors. I purchased them from http://www.goldmine-elec.com/. They are a surplus dealer. RE: [AMRadio] Dummy Load
Thanks guys for all the ideas. Well.. except Jim and his idea... :-) It looks like a surplus unit will be the easiest way. Do most or all of the higher power commercial dummy loads use blowers and heat sinks instead of oil? I wonder if there is a formula (that I would be able to understand) to calculate the needed air flow over a certain wattage load to maintain a reasonable heat? Probably way too technical for me. [AMRadio] Dummy Load
I know this has been beaten to death many times, but for the sake of an old man with a bad memory could we discuss the most economical (very important) way to provide a dummy load for testing a broadcast transmitter. I have a few Cantennas, but they get hot real quick at 1000 watts and I'd like something I could be a little more confident in. If I were to use the proper number of series/parallel non-inductive resistors at say 100 watts each, what kind of support system would be best to insure at least a one minute key down time? Would immersing them in oil or attaching them to heat dissipating metal with a blower be the better choice? Thanks for any and all advice you may offer.. RE: [AMRadio] [AM Radio] BTA1-R Schematic Diagram Wanted
Hi Chuck, You might check with the David Sarnoff Library as they has a extensive collection of RCA manuals. I got one there for my BTA1-R2 and it is an excellent repo that could easily have the schematic enlarged. The link to the home page is: http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/S/htmlS/sarnoffdavi/sarnoffdavi.htm 73, Rick/K5IAR I recently aquired 2 RCA BTA1-R broadcast transmitters which I would like to put on the air on 160 / 75 Meters. They are both pretty complete and I have a manual. I am looking for a good quality schematic, hopefully large and easier to follow than what I have. Sold three that I had: $100 for a fairly complete project set, $400 for the other pair. One was complete and unmodified but had tired paint, the other was clean with the 160 LF oscillator in it. Saw a clean one on epay a year or so back with most of the accessories sell for $500+. Most of the ones I've seen in recent years have been in the $100-$350 price range. By the way, I still can't see my original post to this list since I switched to gmail. I could always see it before. I checked all the settings at mailman and it should be good to go. I probably have something wrong in my gmail account. Thanks, Rick >From the Belden site: RG-6/U Type 1532A 6.20 Belden 1/.040? CCS GIFPE DBII/90% AL PE .024 75 16.2 -55 to +80 300 The last number in that list is the voltage rating of Belden RG 6 U for burial type. So if you run a KW that means your voltage is near 265 volts. This is fine provided you have a good match. What I am saying is that not all RG 6 is as good quality so one must be careful. I have seen some RG 6 that I wouldn't put more than 25 watts into because of the construction. This is particularly true of foam filled. It melts at a lower temperature than PE. RE: [AMRadio] Anti-AM Opinionated Hams
Well put, Geoff. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Pig out! Calories don't count on Turkey Day! Rick/K5IAR As much as I want to agree with you, Mike (simply because it's Dave ;->) he's talking about ending the bickering and fighting amongst hams in general, whether they're on the air, or not. Also, I gotta disagree that it's -not- healthy discussion. After 40+ years there's -no- discussion left. It's just the perpetuation of an old argument that doesn't seem to have a logical conclusion, for both sides. Dave also makes a great point about AM'ers being just as guilty as SSB'ers in knowingly cranking up an AM QSO on a frequency that's 2kc (or less) away from an existing QSO (regardless of mode). Just because (collectively) you say "Well, I've been operating AM right here here on this spot, this frequency for 40 years, and ain't no one gonna run me off..." how does that make us any better than those who crank up a SSB QSO 2kc away from an existing AM QSO? Bottom line is, we are -all- hams, and all hams, regardless of mode -should- operate as gentleman (and ladies). As AM'ers, if we want to operate without persecution then we shouldn't be perpetuating the 40 year old 'kilocycle wars'. It's time to -move-. 3.720 has been a good spot for some of the NorthEasterners... below 3700 is a great expanse, void of signals and I don't know of an AM operating ham that doesn't have the wherewithal to upgrade to Extra class. When the band-warming party occurred (nearly a year ago), there were signals of all kinds below 3700kc and there was a great QSO that happened on 3650kc. Don's complaint (as valid as it is) is why isn't anyone else down there, taking advantage of the 'wide open spaces'? Tired of the back-biting and petty bickering? MOVE! [AMRadio] Slow start crystal
Well, after retracing some of my steps I discovered a high resistance screw type connection on one of the capacitors in the buffer which seems was part of my oscillator problem or part of the reason I was getting such low drive. I also discovered a partially broken clip on the buffer (828) tube socket. With those two items repaired I am now getting ample drive, not excessive, but ample to the pa grids. Now I have encountered yet another oscillator woe. I have three (3) crystals for the 160 meter band, 1885 mc, 1975.15 mc and 1995 mc. I have the transmitter setup and neutralized for the 1885 rock, however, it seems close enough when I use the other two also. Now for the problem. The oscillator starts instantly upon transmit when the 1975.15 rock is in use. When the 1895 crystal is in use there is a tiny delay, but with the 1885 rock there is sometimes as much as a 2 second delay before the oscillator kicks off. The 1885 crystal fires instantly in other rigs or in my signal generator. Do you think the capacitance loading of the crystal has something to do with this? It's a booger bear to change the capacitors in the oscillator, so I would sure like an opinion or two before doing it. Thanks and sorry for the long winded explanation. Thanks Don, Jim, Geoff and all the others for your great input and advice on the vfo vs crystal dilemma. This is one great reflector with some extremely knowledgeable and gracious members. Thanks to all! 73, Rick/K5IAR ...VFO's like the 122 and VF-1 are high-z output, directly from the plate of the oscillator tube. You would need to add an additional stage to boost the power to 250mw at low-Z. An untuned cathode follower stage might do the trick. RE: [AMRadio] VFO vs XTAL
I ran it through a small capacitor before the grid of the 828 buffer. I appreciate the info Jim and Geoff on the output of the 122. I thought it should be plenty hot to do anything I wanted. I guess I'd better go back to crystal control and not take on another project of repairing the vfo at this time. It was just for a test anyway. I am supposed to get about 100 ma pa grid current and I'm only able to muster up about 65 ma. However, I am getting the full 250 - 275 watts of RF out. I just need to level it out a bit. Thanks guys... Rick I'd look at a schematic of a smaller rig (like a Viking II, or maybe a Globe King rig.. see how much input is required. Shouldn't the RF output of the VFO be capacitively coupled to the input of the buffer stage, anyway? -- Driving your AM Rig without a scope, is like driving your car at night, without headlights. RE: [AMRadio] VFO vs XTAL
That what I think too, Geoff. I'm driving or was trying to drive the GE BT-20-A. I think I must have VFO problems. I fed it directly into the grid of the buffer and it barely produced enough drive to register. I am in the midst of double checking the buffer stage to be sure I haven't overlooked something. Thanks, Rick What rig is this in, Rick? MAn, the Viking 122 VFO, at least on the Viking II, has -plenty- of drive! I keep my grid drive control down, on 80m, around 2.5 or 3 on the knob. That gives me around 7.5mA of grid drive for the pair of 6146's (yeah, Ellen - I've been meaning to send you that correction - Johnson says a single 6146 needs no more than 2.5mA of grid drive, the pair in the Viking II needs 7.5mA of grid drive, and I'm guessing (someone tell me for sure) that the Valiant, with it's (3) 6146's needs around 10mA of grid drive?) and if I crank the knob up to around 5 or 6, then I've in excess of 10mA of grid drive on the pair of 6146's. -- Driving your AM Rig without a scope, is like driving your car at night, without headlights. RE: [AMRadio] VFO vs XTAL
It doesn't matter as far as the operation is concerned IF there is enough drive. I'm not getting sufficient drive from either. However, I am getting much more drive from the internal crystal oscillator than from the Viking VFO and I found that strange. I would have thought the VFO would put out more RF than the xtal oscillator. Rick/K5IAR as long as it drives the OSC stage and you can manage the required grid drive for for the final, does it matter? -- Driving your AM Rig without a scope, is like driving your car at night, without headlights.
